We pledge to...
We will improve safety and security for those who live, work, visit and shop in the
town, increasing the take up of safety initiatives such as the radio scheme, pub
watch, shop watch and street pastors.
We will attract funding from other sources to enhance the levy provided by the businesses.
We will create a pleasant, welcoming and attractive environment for all those who visit the town centre with street trees, hanging baskets and containerised planting throughout.
We will realise cost savings directly to the businesses through collective purchasing and joint procurement of trade waste collections and recycling initiatives.
We will ensure that all the services provided by Successful Sutton are additional to those paid for through
business rates.
We will supply businesses and potential
investors with useful data on the town centre’s
performance including footfall figures and dwell time.
We will improve promotion of the town centre, raising the town’s profile through increased and robust marketing and a co-ordinated approach to all
town centre activities.
We will organise and co-ordinate a calendar of events and a range of
markets to drive footfall into the
town centre.
We will represent the business community,
ensuring we have a voice on the
future direction of the High Street and
development of the area.

The Successful Sutton Steering Group is made up of local town centre businesses, and our aim is to ensure that Sutton town centre unlocks its full potential as a successful, vibrant, safe and prosperous location. We believe that the best way to achieve this is through the establishment of a Business Improvement District (BID).
Successful Sutton BIDOur BID will encourage people to come to Sutton town centre both to shop and to invest in new businesses. BIDs are about improving town centres; your YES vote will help us to realise this in Sutton. Our neighbours, Croydon, Wimbledon and Kingston all have successful BIDs working hard to attract and increase their level of footfall as well as hosting a range of other initiatives. As Sutton businesses we should take advantage of this opportunity too.
Do you work in or run a business in Sutton? Make your mark on Sutton town centre this summer – vote YES!You will soon have the chance to vote for a BID for Sutton town centre. A successful YES vote at the ballot will ensure that Successful Sutton is able to honour the 10 pledges set out in this leaflet, which we believe will benefit all businesses in the town.
From talking and working with businesses over the past months we have identified a whole range of initiatives to create a more ‘Successful Sutton’ under the following themes:
Enhancing Sutton – we will create a strong brand for the town centre, supported by an imaginative and co-ordinated marketing strategy. This would include events, markets, art and entertainment in the High Street as well as increased signage and tangible footfall data for businesses within the BID through the installation of cameras.
Brighter Sutton – a successful BID would enable us to create a more pleasant shopping environment through initiatives such as additional street cleans for problem hotspots, tree planting and hanging baskets as well as cycle to work schemes and bike maintenance sessions for shoppers and employees.
Protecting Sutton – to ensure our customers and businesses feel safe we will put forward initiatives such as a subsidised radio scheme, pub and shopwatch schemes and support for the street pastors.
Delivering Value – increased buying power through joining forces will enable businesses to reduce costs through collective purchasing of goods and services such as trade waste, or the services of a handyman for all those small DIY jobs. Joining together will also provide increased clout to attract funding from other sources and enhance the levy businesses provide.
Successful Sutton Pilot projectsWe have a number of pilot projects in the pipeline...
Hanging basketsTo improve the appearance of the High Street and attractiveness of the town centre, up to twenty brightly coloured hanging baskets will be displayed down the length of the High Street. These will complement the green wall and street trees and improve the look of the town centre, enhancing the perception of a well maintained town.
Hotspot deep clean There are some areas along the High Street, such as alleyways, which attract litter and large amounts of commercial waste. Town centre businesses will be joining together to clean up litter on areas of private land which the local authority doesn’t have the contract for. These areas will be given a special deep clean to demonstrate the difference a clean town centre can make.
Dr Bike eventA Dr Bike event will encourage employees to get their bikes out of the shed and start cycling to work. Dr Bike provides a free on the spot maintenance and safety check to make sure clients’ bikes run smoothly. All clients get tips on road safety and bike security, advice on how to look after their bike and information on TfL cycle routes and cycle to work schemes. Employees can bring their children’s scooters along too for a quick safety check.
Footfall camerasA set of footfall cameras will be installed in the High Street so that you can see the positive impact of, for example, events in the town centre on your business.Their effectiveness in tracking footfall is also a vital tool for attracting inward investment into the town, and the data can be used as leverage to obtain other information in exchange from organisations such as TfL.

The BID will be funded by a small levy, for example, one per cent of the rateable value, on eligible businesses located within the BID area. This levy will be applied to businesses with a rateable value over £10,000. It means that Successful Sutton will be able to invest up to £2m in the town over the next five years.
All 500 or so eligible businesses in the BID area will receive a letter from us to ask who you want to vote on your behalf in the July ballot.
Pilot projects, such as a Dr Bike event, will take place in Sutton town centre to demonstrate the impact a BID can have in the area.
We will send you our BID Proposal, a manifesto document detailing exactly what a successful BID would mean for Sutton.
You will also receive a letter from Sutton Council giving you official notification of the July ballot.
Pilot projects will continue in Sutton town centre with the installation of hanging baskets and footfall cameras.
You will receive a ballot paper asking you if you want a BID for Sutton. You will have a month to cast your vote.
The final date for voting is 5 July. The result of the ballot will be announced shortly after this.
If the result is positive, Successful Sutton will continue its work as a fully-fledged Business Improvement District (BID).
