Sudanese Nursing Students Federation SCORP Activity Report: Nursing & Midwifery students against FGM De-Medicalization Campaign July to November – 2018. 1. Background: Sudanese Nursing Students Federation is an independent, non-governmental and non-‐ political federation of nursing students’ and novice associations working through-out the Sudan. We have (42) National Member Association from 18 state and representing more than 10.000 nursing students and novice . The SNSF was founded in May 2015 and is run for and by nursing students on a non-profit basis. It exists to serve nursing students all over the Sudan. SNSF was established in the Sudan as a nursing community organization. Mission of SNSF states: “our mission is to offer future nurses a comprehensive introduction to global health issues. Through our programs and opportunities, we develop culturally sensitive students of nursing, intent on influencing the transitional inequalities that shape the health of our nursing”. One late 2017 the SNSF Team on FGM De-medicalization were collected and planned to propose a campaign to the expected partners and donors, on the first half of 2018 the replay were received by the acceptance of WHO to technically support the campaign and UKaid to sponsor it financially. 2. Objectives: 2.1 General Objectives: The general objective were to build nursing and midwifery students skills in FGM, social norm and soft skills to enable them to contribute activities as change agents to strengthen social movements within their peers and community to de-medicalize the practice. 2.2 Specific Objectives: 1- To achieve an overall knowledge increase and understanding of FGM/C eradication/ prevention and support at the nursing students by mobilizing and empowering them 2- To engage the formal and informal partner in the fight against FGM at the grassroots.

Activity Report: Nursing & Midwifery students against FGM De-Medicalization

Campaign July to November – 2018.

1. Background:

Sudanese Nursing Students Federation is an independent, non-governmental and non-‐

political federation of nursing students’ and novice associations working through-out the Sudan.

We have (42) National Member Association from 18 state and representing more than 10.000 nursing

students and novice . The SNSF was founded in May 2015 and is

2. Objectives:

3- DE medicalization of the FGM starting with Students.

4- To raise awareness on FGM Demedicalizition issues among the nursing and midwifery

societies nor as public community.

5- To raise awareness on FGM/C among Nursing and midwifery students

6- To motivateNursing and Midwifery students and the community to help

reduce/eliminate FGM/C.

7- To emphasize on the de-medicalization of FGM/C procedures

8- To collect Statement of Declaration signatures from the 5 Targeted States.

3. Proceedings of the Nursing and Midwifery students Against FGM Medicalization Campaign:

3.1 The National Workshop and the lunch of the campaign: on the 13-19 September 2018,

with 25 students from the 5 targeted states, the get oriented by the FGM context and the social

norms by WHO-Sudan employees, and leadership and managerial skills by MedSIN- Sudan

volunteers, and maternal health, SDGs and Facilitation skills by SNSF Trainers, we collect 25

pledges.

3.2 The state level campaign:

The campaign targeted 5 states , in each state we targeted the Nursing and midwifery schools ,

and the surrounded Nursing or midwifery youth communities.

States:

3.2.1 Khartoum state:

In Khartoum we targeted the flowing universities:

• Khartoum university : a workshop were hold with 40 students, the trained on FGM

De-Medicalization , Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms and facilitation

skills; 40 questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students pre and post

to the session; a public session were hold at the faculty and 350 pledge were singed

by the students and academic staff.

• Neeleein university: a workshop were hold with 50 students, the trained on FGM

De-Medicalization , Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms and facilitation

skills; 50 questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students pre and post

to the session; a public session were hold at the faculty and 280 pledge were singed

by the students and academic staff.

• Omdurman Islamic university: a workshop were hold with 40 students, the trained

on FGM De-Medicalization , Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms and

facilitation skills; 40 questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students

pre and post to the session; a public session were hold at the faculty and 200 pledge

were singed by the students and academic staff.

• The State academy for health sciences: a workshop were hold with 45 students, the

trained on FGM De-Medicalization, Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms

and facilitation skills; 45 questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the

students pre and post to the session; a public session were hold at the faculty and

289 pledge were singed by the students and academic staff.

• Technology university : a workshop were hold with 109 students, the trained on

FGM De-Medicalization, Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms and

facilitation skills; (0) questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students

pre and post to the session; a public session were hold at the faculty and 350 pledge

were singed by the students

• Over all achievements: the workshops were attended with 284 students, they

beamed well oriented with FGM and reproductive health issues; also 175

questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students pre and post to the

session; a public sessions attendees singed 1,469 pledge were singed by the

students and academic staff within the state.

3.2.2 North Kordofan state:

In NK state we targeted the flowing universities:

• University of kordofan: a workshop were hold with 45 students, the trained on FGM

De-Medicalization , Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms and facilitation

skills; 45 questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students pre and post

to the session; a public session were hold at the faculty and 280 pledge were singed

by the students and academic staff.

• The state academy for health sciences: a workshop were hold with 45 students, the

trained on FGM De-Medicalization , Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms

and facilitation skills; No questioners were collected; a public session were hold at

the faculty and 80 pledge were singed by the students and academic staff.

3.2.3 Gaduref state: : a workshop were hold with 40 students, the trained on FGM De-

Medicalization , Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms and facilitation

skills; 40 questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students pre and

post to the session; a public session were hold at the faculty and 250 pledge

were singed by the students and academic staff.

3.2.4 Wad madani state:

In Wad Madani state we targeted the flowing universities:

• Gazer a university in combination with WadMadni University for health sciences

and technology: a workshop were hold with 50 students, the trained on FGM De-

Medicalization , Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms and facilitation skills;

50 questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students pre and post to the

session; a public session were hold at the faculty and 250 pledge were singed by the

students and academic staff.

3.2.5 Northern state: a workshop were hold with 50 students, the trained on FGM De-

Medicalization , Maternal health issues in Sudan, Social Norms and facilitation

skills; 50 questioners were collected to assess the KAP of the students pre and

post to the session; a public session were hold at the faculty and 198 pledge

were singed by the studentsand academic staff.

“Note: the primary plan were to visit Khartoum, Kordofan, Qadarife , Kassala and the

northern state, but because of the “Chikungunya outbreak” we shift kassala to WadMadni

for the purpose of the team safety and security.”

4. Overall results:

Overall participant’s number: 539 trainees.

Overall questioners count: 430 questioners.

Overall pledges comets: 2,552 pledges.

Overall Public session attendees estimate to be 2,661 people.

5. Challenges:

1- Lack of experience on social norms was the major challenge.

2- The universities mangers not well co-operative as we expect, they almost put financial

hardships upon the hall rental and use of university access.

3- Transportation and accommodation difficulties took a place during the state period.

6. Recommendations:

1- The manpower should be increased for the sake of sufficient and efficient coverage for

the targeted populations.

2- The material should be increased in content and the quality of the content to archive

the audience satisfaction.

3- Community outreach lead by the trained local students will be great chance to take an

active role toward the de-medicalization and then the total abandonment.

4- The reaches well help a lot to define the best ways to change the social norms specially

the community beads researches.

7. Conclusion:

In conclusion, the Nursing and midwifery students against FGM Medicalization Campaign pan

Sudan were a great success, and the collaboration with the WHO was successful also. Cities

outside Khartoum are a good target for such movements, as most of the students are not

trained in social change, and most of the community is unaware of the consequences of FGM,

the researches on this topic in Sudan are slightly limited to the governors and health dissections

makers, youth nursing and midwifery student are very good manpower to achieve SDG3 with

the most innovative ways.

Annex 2: Declaration:

Pledge to support the Abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation in Sudan

Female Genital Mutilation is a harmful practice in Sudan. It is a violation of the basic human

rights of girls and women and violates a person's rights to health, security and physical

integrity, the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the

right to life when the procedure results in death*.

We are the nursing and midwefery Students in Sudan are standing against the Medicalization of

Female Genital Cutting and calling for regulatory and accountability mechanisms through

medical code of conduct and medical council to criminalize the practice of all types of Female

Genital Mutilation.
