1 Ideas for Science Courses for Pre-theology and College Programs Overview: Official Roman Catholic Church documents, especially those since the Second Vatican Council, have promulgated a positive spirit of cooperation between science and theology. The aggiornamento of VCII reinforced time and again that we live in a world dominated by science and technology and that “recent studies and findings of science, history, and philosophy raise new questions which influence life and demand new theological investigations” (Gaudium et Spes, 62). [We have many more documents for you to consult on our website, www.semscience.org, under “Documents”]. The rest is up to you. The following are ideas for possible courses for the pre-theology and college programs, but you need not feel confined to adopting or adapting any of them. In fact, the review committee welcomes your creativity in developing scientifically rigorous, pastorally applicable courses that engage the mind and spirit, that inform and inspire, that will generate enthusiasm for conversations about science that dominate current discourse, and that prepare seminarians for dialogue on the intersection between science and theology. Learning goals/objectives applicable to all courses: 1. To ensure the widest possible range of contact with science considering the subject of the course. 2. To enable those who successfully complete the course to have a sufficient knowledge of the science covered in the course to allow them to understand the general scientific concepts, principles and methods that underpin the matter of the course. 3. To respond to the pastoral challenges associated with the findings of modern science. 4. To improve students’ understanding of the dynamic character of science in conversation with theological education, and to provide teachers and students with resources to discuss science and Christian faith. 5. To enable the successful student to understand the legitimate truth claims of the science in the course and to understand the empirical limits of those same truth claims. 6. To enable the successful student to become a lifelong learner of scientific inquiry. NB: Please keep in mind that the John Templeton Foundation does not support courses in bioethics or those engaging issues such as sustainability, environmental ethics or creation care.
