This w ork is w ritten for th ree trum pets, tw o French horns, th ree trom bones, baritone (bass clef), tuba and percussion. Percussion instrum ents included are: bass drum , crash cymbals, suspended cymbal, snare drum , teno r drum , chim es, xylophone, m arim ba, vibraphone, bongos, tam -tam , w ind chim es, woodblocks, claves, shaker and cabasa and are perform ed by up to four players.
Clearly, a Southw estern influence can be g leaned from th e w ork’s title. Suite Succulents. Each subsequen t m ovem ent depicts the com poser’s musical perception o f various types o f cactus. O rgan Pipe appears first and is a fanfare. Barrel hearkens to a blues form w ith a bit o f a tri-tone tw ist and requires improvisation. Pin Cushion, a percussion feature presen ts the listener w ith the arduous task o f replacing all the cactus’s need les once they have tragically fallen out. A lthough its open ing gestu res are m ajestic and religious in nature, Saguaro is quick to
acknow ledge previously introduced m em bers o f th e cactus family.
