All Beth Shalom members in good standing are invited to attend and participate in an informational congregational meeting Monday, September 27, 7-9 p.m., at Wornall in the sanctuary. During this meeting, members will be updated on our current financial situation and CBS task forces will present possible solutions. Members will have the opportunity to express their viewsand share suggestions with the CBS leadership. Please plan to attend!

What is most important? These past few years have been a time of great challenge for our country’s economy, for non-profits in general, for our synagogue community and for many of our individual families. With very little exception, these challenges - overwhelming as they may have seemed or felt - have not been challenges of the spirit. Rather, they are a Shofar call.

They have tried and tested us through growing privation - forcing long-range decisions in immediately trying circumstances. Companies and organizations have been forced to become smaller or face the end of their work. Synagogues have needed to do the same, as families have withdrawn from educational or personal commitments to preserve their futures. And through it all, relationships have been soured or strengthened based on our best or worst reactions to the challenges. Can you hear the Shofar’s call?

According to Pirkei Avot 5:3, With ten tests our father Abraham was tested and he withstood them all--in order to make known how great was our father Abraham’s love. Some Jews believe that every moment comes from God, and every moment is a deliberately crafted test of our spirit and character by the One who knows us best. Others believe that events are not crafted by God, but that we are nevertheless facing tests of Jewish character each day. From our vantage point it is impossible to rationally determine which is true, but that doesn’t change the nature of the moment. Are you listening to the voice of the Shofar?

How do we decide what is most important? For me, the answer is “imperfectly.” It is hard to keep the highest ideals of Torah and Mitzvot in front of me, especially when economic hardship hammers away at the synagogue and families I care for. We alternate between the fierce rigor of a balance sheet and the myopia caused by long range

Rabbi Robert L. [email protected] | 913-647-7294

f r o m t h e r a b b i ’s s t u d ydreams. So many families have faced the same challenge: how much to cut, and what to hold on to? We hesitate and tremble in the quivering blasts of the Shofar.

The answer lies in courage to face reality, no matter how unpalatable, and the faith to believe that our highest hopes are not based in finances. When we make decisions in the moment based on God, Torah, Mitzvot and love and respect for each other, we have reason to believe that what we create will last. We make our hopes align with God’s dreams, and know that our lives are part of something eternal. We can know that what we do is sustainable. In synagogue these High Holy Days, we will read the Akeidah, the culminating test of Abraham’s faith: the binding of Isaac, and God’s intercession at the last moment - placing a ram on the altar instead of Abraham’s beloved son. It was the hardest moment of his life, but he did not know it at the time. The lesson is clear: we do not know the outcome before we choose. We do not know if things will get easier or harder after this. But we are assured that our decisions matter and that our choices are to be viewed as a test. It is not a math test, proving we can balance a ledger. It is not a memory test, proving we can repeat the past or stick to our guns. It is a test of our spirit, faith and love. It is a hearing test. Can you hear the call of the Shofar?

Congregation Beth Shalom and each of us in our lives face serious tests. Let us return - to synagogue and to Jewish living. Let us create a sustainable future by coming to shul and sharing our lives in synagogue community in the present. Let the Shofar propel you forward in faith and courage. Let the next blasts of the ram’s horn be victorious over doubt, selfishness, apathy and passivity.

This fall, Sisterhood’s Sarah Peltzman Adult Education classes, taught by Rabbi Robert Tobin, will take place on Tuesdays, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Lamar campus. The classes will consist of 90 minutes with Rabbi Tobin, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by 30 minutes of “family traditions” and “current events” led by different class members. Registration and classes will begin on Tuesday, October 5. This year’s topics are as follows:

Part I. Life Without a King: The Book of Judges is a study of the remarkable period of time between Joshua and King Saul.

Part II. 50 Words that Unlock the Siddur will give you a practical shortcut to recognizing and understanding, in Hebrew, the key words and concepts that repeat most frequently in Jewish prayer. Part III. 7 Legends from the Talmud enters the intriguing world of Talmudic Lore.

Part IV. Passover Living concludes our year with a study of Pesach traditions from a traditional view.

For more information or to register in advance, contact Berenice Haberman at [email protected] or 913-894-6657.

Sarah Peltzman Classes Resume on Tuesdays!

Sisterhood is organizing a new project, Mitzvah Meals, to be jointly funded by Sisterhood and the Congregation. If you are a congregant who has recently returned home from the hospital, been bereaved, ill or injured, or has recently given birth to or adopted a baby, Sisterhood would like to provide you with a Shabbat (or weekday) meal. Contact Jill Goldstein, Ritual Coordinator at 913-647-7281 or [email protected] and let her know you would like a meal, then Sisterhood committee members will make arrangements. Normally the meal will be planned to serve a family of four, and will include everything from roast chicken to challah to dessert.

The Mitzvah Meal Committee Chair, Marlene Katz, is looking for volunteers to help with organizing, purchasing, preparing meals and delivery. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Marlene at [email protected].

I want to share with everyone a little secret I’ve learned about: the Thursday morning minyan before a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. I have been attending morning minyan for the last 5 years to support this very vital service that our synagogue provides for those reciting kaddish for a loved one. I’ve recently started attending Thursday mornings for B’nei Mitzvah that I know. The joy that I see on the faces of the families as they start their Simchah weekend is incredible. There is a sense that they have finally made it to this event they have been talking about for many years. There is also a big sense of relief as they attend the minyan, knowing the fun is about to start.

I know there are many folks who question why we would even need to attend this event. I believe it sends an important message to our children about the importance of the morning minyan to Conservative Jews, and the role of tefillin in the weekday services. It also shows that

morning minyan is nothing to be scared of and the group is very warm and welcoming.

I would like to encourage more folks to attend the morning minyan in general, and especially consider attending on a Thursday morning to celebrate the simchah of an upcoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah. I have gained a lot and developed many friendships. I know I may have to share this special event with more folks, but I’m willing to make that sacrifice.

The Polsky Religious School staff and teachers have had a very busy summer getting ready for the opening of Religious School on Sunday, September 12. Students will find some familiar programs as well as new additions. All of our teachers are returning and are busy preparing to welcome our students. We are pleased to welcome several students who will be joining our program from Congregation Ohev Sholom. Our fantastic Monday Journeys classes begin on Monday, September 13. We are also very excited about the new High School program which will now take place at Lamar on Tuesday nights beginning September 14. This program is open to any 8th-10th grader in the community and has a wonderful staff of teachers. We have missed your children over the summer and look forward to welcoming the sounds of learning and children’s voices in our halls.

Until school begins here are some things you can do at home to make the transition into the school year a smoother one.

• Take out those Hebrew books and spend some time reviewing. • Check out the school calendar, school policies and the school supply list on the Beth Shalom website, www.bethshalomkc.org. • When shopping for school supplies, pick up a few extra to donate by adding to the bins outside the school office. • Bring all completed forms to the office, including medical and media release forms, 3rd-5th grade family journeys form and high school course selection form. See you on September 12 for start of religious school.

An Exciting New School Year to Come!

a service for students in grades 3-6 on both days of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur at 10:30 a.m. in the Katz Chapel. This year we are holding a Kol Nidrei service for students in grades K-6 at 7 p.m. in the Library.

Chaim Singer-Frankes

Rabbinic Intern to Lead Youth and Young Family High Holy Day Services

Once again this year CBS needs you to help us by providing extra funds to help support our synagogue. Our combined dues cover about one-half of our synagogue’s expenses. This year our goal is to raise $75,000 to help support congregational programming and services for the coming year.

HighHolyDayAppeal pledge cards have been mailed, and board members will be calling to ask for your support. Levels of support begin at $1. We hope for 100% participation. Donations can be made by mailing in your pledge card, speaking to a board member on the phone, or indicating your pledge amount on your High Holy Day ticket and giving it to an usher during Yom Kippur services. New this year is the availability to make your donation online through the Beth Shalom website. There is a link on the top right side of the home page. Click and follow the directions.

Please make a difference. Contribute to the High Holy Day Appeal for 2010-2011. For more information, contact the High Holy Day Appeal Chairman, Richard Simon at 913-897-0196 or [email protected].

As we celebrate the High Holy days, we are reminded of the hardships caused by hunger, especially among children, in our community. To help with this crisis, Beth Shalom will volunteer at Harvesters on three occasions during the 2010-11 school year. Our first opportunity to volunteer at Harvesters will be on Sunday, October 17. In advance of our first visit we are collecting snacks for school-aged children in the Kansas City area. Bins with the Harvesters logo will be located outside the administrative offices at the Lamar campus from September2-October14 to collect the snacks. The donations will be distributed by Harvesters.
