A much awaited evening of musical col- ours on two pianos will go on boards on the Sep- tember 20, 7.30 pm, at the Lionel Wendt thea- tre, Colombo 7. Since year 2008, the two piano duo artistes, Ramya de Livera Perera and Soundarie David Rodrigo have established themselves covering a wide range on two piano repertoire. Guest artiste Mary- anne David, who has introduced the joy of singing and performing to hundreds of people from all walks of life, the young, not so young and the gracefully old alike, will be adding a whole new dimension to the concert. Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre The movie, Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâ- tre (2002) by Alain Chabat will be screened on Tuesday, September 18 at 3pm and Wednesday,September 19 at 6.30pm at Alliance Française de Colom- bo,11, Barnes Place,Colombo 7. Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, decides to chal- lenge the Roman Emper- or Julius Caesar, in three months to build a sump- tuous palace in the desert. If successful, it must concede publicly that the Egyptian people is the greatest of all peoples. To do this, Cleopatra uses Numerobis, an avant-garde archi- tect full of energy. If successful, it will cover the gold. If it fails, it will throw the crocodiles.Celui it, conscious of the challenge, seeks help from his old friend Getafix. Barefoot presents Cube and Colour - a collection of weavings and patchwork from the Bare- foot Design Team and a retrospective of Barbara Sansoni–Lewcock’s tex- tiles sculptures at the Bare- foot gallery Colombo from September 21 until Octo- ber 7. Barefoot began over 40 years ago, when a youthful Barbara Sansoni, was invit- ed to design cloth for young Sri Lankan women who had limited schooling and skills. Learning to weave was part of their rehabilitation programme. Today, Bar- bara Sansoni – Lewcock is an internationally recog- nised textile designer and the company she founded called Barefoot has three shops in Sri Lanka and exports textiles worldwide. The company has a small team of dedicated design- ers, headed by her son Dominic Sansoni, who work with dyers, weavers and skilled needle people. This exhibition gives an opportunity to view a col- lection of Barbara Sanso- ni–Lewcock’s textile sculp- tures. Barbara has always purported that textiles and architecture are closely connected. The Barefoot Design team has had great fun working together to create this collection. Preethi Hapuwatte, Marie Gnana- raj and Nelun Harasgama (who are well seasoned Barefoot designers and well known artists in their own rights) works of art shown in this exhibition confirm their individual and collective artistic coherence and collectable talent. Dominic Sansoni is internationally known for his colouful photography which “displays his love for what is past, what is obso- lete and what is nearly extinct” with “a little post- modern twist somewhere in the frame (look for it)” Richard Simon. Nilloufer Victoria creates her unique pieces when she needs to clear her head from the pressure of management. Shaunagh Aluwihare’s patchwork pieces exhibit her growth as a designer who can work outside the discipline of dress- making and her dedica- tion to detail. Gnei Raseen’s patchwork gar- ments are exquisitely con- structed showcasing her sewing expertise. Barefoot’s most recent designer -Dunyasha Victo- ria’s patchwork pieces show a flair for design that gives all the design team a nurturing pride to see. The gallery’s opening times are 10 am to 7pm weekdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays. Pictures by Nis- sanka Wijeratne 21 SEP Thine Roo Prabha, the annual photo- graphic exhibi- tion and com- petition organ- ized by Vishaka Balika Vid- yalaya, Sapugaskanda, will be held for the fifth time at the National Art Gallery (NAG), Colombo, on Sep- tember 20 and 21. The opening ceremony of the event will take place on September 20 at 10 am. Prof Patrick Ratnayake will be the Chief Guest. Around 200 photographs in colour as well as black and white will be displayed. School children from all ages from around 12 schools will take part. The event is organized by the Photographic Society of Vishaka Balika Vidyalaya, Sapugaskanda. The first, second and third place win- ners will be chosen at the competition. 20 SEP The best production, direction, actress, set design, stage managment and script (second place) at the National drama festi- val 2011, Janelen Panin- nada, two popular drama's of Dayananda Gunawarde- na, Naribana and Jasaya saha Lenchina and Balloth Ekka Ba, the most popular stage drama written and directed by Ravindra Ari- yarathne will be staged on this September at the Lionel Wendt theatre, Colombo 7. Janelen Paninnada will be staged on September 21 at 7 pm, Naribana and Jasaya saha Lenchina will stage its special shows on Saturday (September 22) at 3.30 pm and 7 pm while Balloth Ekka Ba, will be staged once again on Sun- day (September 23) at 3.30 and 7 pm. The book will be intro- duced to the market at the BMICH on September 20. Many prominent artistes will attend the event. Swarna Mallawarachchi, Deepthi Kumara Gunaratne and Minister Dinesh Guna- wardena will make speech- es. The event will be shown on mirrorarts.lk website live. This is the first time that a event of this nature will be shown on the web live in Sri Lanka. The book is titled Sumi- tra: Adasiyawasaka Advitheeya Cinema Jeevi- tha Kathawa (Sumitra: Half Century of a Great Cinematic Life Story) relates the journey of the Poetess of Sri Lankan Cin- ema. The official launch of the book, organized by San- geetha Weeraratne and Shereen Kumaratunga, took place at the Hilton residency recently. Sumitra entered the field as the assistant director for Sandeshaya. She has been in the field for 53 years and had directed and edited many prominent movies. Gahanu Lamai was her maiden movie and she is currenytly working on her latest cinematic venture Vaishnavee. She has direct- ed 10 films. The book comprises 175 rare images and are printed with care so that their details are not lost. It has 276 pages and is covered in box board. Prem Dissanay- ake had handled the print- ing process of the book. Renowned journalist and film critic Ajith Galappath-thi has penned the biogra-phy of Sumithra Peries. The book will be intro-duced to the market at the BMICH on September 20. Many prominent artistes will attend the event.
