SIAC Recommendations to the Board June 11, 2012

1. We recommend the Board consider options for teachers to have a greater degree of autonomy and flexibility in order to more effectively implement, analyze, and reflect on the professional learning continuous improvement cycle.

Clarifying examples or statements:

• Early outs • Balance between learning/implementation, analyzing and reflecting • Self directed learning (PLP Action research) based on district commitment • Common planning for all • Prioritize new learning to implement with fidelity

Voting results: 3: 32 votes 2: 1 vote 1: 0 votes Total score: 32 x 3 + 2 x 1 + 0 = 98

2. We recommend that the Board develop a process for schools to engage families as active

partners with students, teachers, and community resources to prepare students for the 21st Century.

Clarifying examples or statements:

• Investigate and identify successful models to enhance partnerships • Identify willing partners (community resources and local expertise) to involve them in

classroom learning • Educate and increase family knowledge of specific learning strategies to strengthen

connection between home and school • Identify and build upon student interest to bridge connections between school and

community • Link students’ needs and interest to opportunities for learning in the workplace

Voting results: 3: 21 2: 9 1: 1 Total Score: 21x3 + 9x2 + 1x1 = 82

3. We recommend a study of personnel resources of high-performing schools and an

examination of CCSD allocation for those resources to determine needs at all levels.

Clarifying examples or statements: • Research of effective schools show that new teacher mentors, instructional coaches,

interventionists, and admin support (such as SAMS) increase student achievement • We are understaffed at the district level in terms of support, curriculum development,

school improvement facilitations, assessment, human resources, etc. • People responsible for some of our most at-risk students have limited access to training

and support from knowledgeable colleagues • We need quality tools to analyze needs in personnel/resources so that they may be

allocated for highest-leverage results

• Administrators desire a transparent process and training to understand the interconnectedness of school budgeting

Voting Results: 3: 32 2: 1 1: 0 Total Score: 32x3 + 2x1 + 0 = 98

4. We are recommending the Board ensure frequent teacher and parent communication on

student progress towards ICC standards.

Clarifying examples or statements: • Students have a clear understanding of ICC standards • Parents have a clear understanding of ICC standards • Frequent feedback needs to occur more frequently that just Parent/Teacher conferences

(at least 4 times a year) • Timeliness responses to parental emails • Students need to own these in students friendly terms wording (ICC standards) • Specific feedback so students and parents know where student is and what they still

need to do in order to master standards Voting Results: 3: 14 2: 18 1: 0 Total Score: 14x3 +18x2 + 0 = 78
