SUMMARY

Bill Roedy is the former Chairman and CEO of MTV Networks International, where he and his team built from scratch a global operation of 200 channels, 20 brands (including MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central) in 200 countries, reaching a potential audience of 2 billion people, launching the most channels in the history of television.

Prior to joining MTVNI, Roedy was a Vice President for HBO for ten years, and was inducted as one of the “Pioneers” of the U.S. cable industry, as well as being inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame Class of 2015. Earlier he was a career officer in the United States Army where he qualified as Airborne and Army Ranger with decorated combat service in Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star, Air Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He then commanded nuclear missile bases in Italy as part of NATO, receiving the Meritorious Service Medal

In 1998 Mr. Roedy was named Ambassador for UNAIDS and he has addressed the UN General Assembly on several occasions regarding the pandemic. He was a founding member and chair of the Global Business Coalition (GBC) on HIV/AIDS from 1998 to 2002, and later as Chair of the Advisory Board. In 2005, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed him founding chair of the Global Media AIDS Initiative Leadership Committee. In November 2010, he was appointed as the first ever Envoy for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations (GAVI) by Mary Robinson, the GAVI Chair, joining the board in 2015 and chairing the subcommittee on independent governance.

Mr. Roedy is the founding Chairman of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, which provides young people with resources to fight the epidemic at the grass roots level, in combination with MTV’s award winning HIV/ AIDS programming.

In addition to the above, he is active in a wide range of other Global Health initiatives, including the boards of amfAR, Fitzmi, The Hawn Foundation (Goldie Hawn) and Global Health Corps. His business roles include Zumba (Healthy Lifestyle), Mind Candy, Lionsgate, Ping4 (Mobile Alerts), DJZ, Xite and the private equity advisory boards of TowerBrook (NY/London) and ClearVue (Shanghai). His geopolitical initiatives include Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the United States Middle East Project (USMEP) and Seeds of Peace. He is also a Churchill Fellow‎, appointed by the Churchill National Museum.

His education roles include board membership with Westminster College, and the American School in London (ASL) where he co-chairs the Diversity Initiative, and advisory/board roles with Baruch College and the Berlin School of Creative Leadership.

His awards include: Individual Business Leadership Award presented by US President Bill Clinton, the International Emmy Founder’s Award, amfAR’s Award of Courage, Doctors of the World Leadership Award and the UN Correspondents Association Global Citizen of the Year Award presented by UN Secretary General Ban–Ki-Moon. He has also given numerous commencement addresses with two honorary doctorate degrees.

Roedy holds degrees of Bachelor of Science from West Point and an MBA from Harvard. He is one the Exec Producers of the film documentary “Battle of amfAR”, which premiered on HBO on World AIDS Day, December 1st 2013. He is also the author of ‘What Makes Business Rock’, one of CNBC’s Best Books of Summer 2011. Bill is currently working on a second book on the art of intelligent perseverance.

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

Mr. Roedy has been active in a wide range of corporate social responsibility issues, most notably global health. He has also targeted issues and concerns that are foremost in young peoples’ minds and that directly impact their lives.

Through MTV International’s Staying Alive campaign, Mr. Roedy led the brand’s global efforts to promote HIV/AIDS education. By tackling the issue both locally and globally, the campaign aims to affect behaviour change and lessen the stigma attached to the disease. The Staying Alive campaign has produced award-winning HIV/AIDS related documentaries, concerts, town halls and public service announcements, all of which are made available to all broadcasters’ rights free and at no cost.

Mr. Roedy serves as the founding chairman of the Staying Alive Foundation (SAF), which combats the epidemic at the grassroots level, funding grantees in the hardest hit areas of the world. The Foundation has given 400 grants in 70 countries, which MTV aims to double over the next four years.

In 1998, Mr. Roedy was named the first ever Ambassador for UNAIDS (the joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS) reflecting his extensive travels and advocacy battling the disease. He has addressed the United Nations General Assembly on several occasions regarding the pandemic, and was the General Assembly keynote speaker, along with Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, at the 2010 Model UN.

Mr. Roedy served as founding Member and Chair of the Global Business Coalition (GBC) on HIV/AIDS from 1999-2002, significantly increasing the commitment of the business community around the world to fight the pandemic. In December 2010, Mr. Roedy became the Chairman of their Corporate Advisory Board, and currently serves on the board.

In April 2005, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed Mr. Roedy as founding Chair of the Global Media AIDS Initiative (GMAI) Leadership Committee. MTVNI was the first media company invited to participate in the initiative established to galvanise media organisations to play a stronger role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The GMAI was launched in 2004 with 22 participants. Under Mr. Roedy’s chairmanship, GMAI grew to include 140 companies from 70 countries.

He joined the board of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) in 2011, which announced a ‘Countdown to a Cure’ by 2020.

2009: United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) Global Citizen of the Year Award, presented by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for his work in HIV/AIDS and for addressing key issues that affect young people around the world.

2008: Doctors of the World Health and Human Rights Leadership Award, in recognition of his extraordinary leadership in the cause of health and human rights, presented by Kelly Rowland

2008: Cable Positive’s Joel A. Berger Award, the cable industry’s AIDS action organisation, in recognition of his contributions to the fight against HIV/AIDS, presented by Wyclef Jean.

2007: AmFAR’s Award of Courage presented by Beyoncé Knowles.

2006: New York AIDS Film Festival Award.

2005: YouthAIDS, Family Health International, and the Kaiser Family Foundation, in recognition of his services to HIV/AIDS awareness.

2004: International Emmy Founders Award for revolutionising music on television and supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS around the world, presented by Lenny Kravitz.

2003: Midem’s “Person of the Year in Cannes for his services to global music.

2002: Award for Individual Business Leadership as Chairman of the Global Business Coalition, an honour bestowed by US President Bill Clinton.
