Migration and its Impact on CitiesDeep dive on migration and cities, exploring the types, causes and patterns of migration to cities, the impact on urban infrastructure and services, the solutions that can be employed and how cities can seek to future proof themselves to address this growing challenge.

Embracing Circular & Sharing EconomyRecognize the impact of the sharing & circular economy and identify how cities can leverage this opportunity to do more with less as well as how greater public private cooperation can assist. Support cities in developing a regulatory framework where the sharing & circular economies can co-exist with traditional delivery models.

Affordable HousingUnderstanding the affordable housing demand and supply gap in cities; exploring the role of private sector in supporting the public sector to meet housing needs; and achieving affordability challenge

Each year, the Future of Urban Development and Services Steering Board meets during the Annual Meeting at Davos to discuss key developments in the cities space and determine the body of thought leadership work for the coming year. These topics areresearched, and case studies, best practices, and recommendations are published as insight reports or whitepapers.

This Agile Cities whitepaper highlights what cities need to do to prepare for the opportunities provided by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The paper unpacks what “agility” means in practice in eight aspects of city life – buildings, land, energy, mobility, IT, security, education, and governance – and it proposes new guidelines by which to measure a city’s agility. It also identifies some innovative emerging examples from cities around the world – from flexible planning laws in Singapore to an app in Quito to plan and pay for journeys that combine different modes of transport.

The Forum CommunitiesGlobal Shapers Young Global Leaders, and the Global Future Councils

The Global Shapers community comprises over 6,000 young people age 20-29 based in more than 450 city “hubs” in 170 countries and territories. Together, they form a powerful source of grass-roots knowledge which mayors and governors can collaborate with to address urban and global challenges. The Global Shapers are participating in the Global Shapers Challenge: Shaping My City’s Future by sharing innovative examples of how their cities are preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Forum of Young Global Leaders (YGLs) is a unique and diverse community of nearly 900 of the world’s most outstanding leaders under 40 years old who work together to shape a better future for the next generation. Those from municipal and regional authorities include:• Mayor of Compton, USA• Mayor of Calgary, Canada• Governor of Colima, Mexico• Mayor of Otsu City, Japan• Mayor of Quito, Ecuador• Governor of Mie Prefecture, Japan• Vice Mayor of Suizhou, People’s

Republic of China

The Network of Global Future Councils is dedicated to promoting innovative thinking on the future, and consists of thought leaders from academia, government, business and civil society to challenge conventional thinking and develop new insights and perspectives on the key global systems, as well as the impact and governance. The network comprises 35 councils on topics ranging from The Future of Human Rights to the Future of Blockchain.

How can I engage?Steering Board & Advisory Board and their Commitments

Steering Board Advisory BoardThe Steering Board is open to CEOs and senior executives from the Forum’s Industry Partner or Strategic Partner companies, non-profit or multilateral organizations who will guide the general direction of the project, lend thought leadership toward the goals of the initiative, and provide perspectives for the city advisory process.

Steering Board Members are asked to participate in approximately 5-6 meetings/phone calls per year. Participation cannot be delegated unless specifically stated for the given meeting. As annual project sessions occur in Davos and at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions each year, Steering Board Members must be able to attend such sessions.

The Advisory Board is composed mayors, ministers, academics and urban development experts from government, the private sector and civil society chosen for their thought leadership and expertise in the field. They provide knowledge and expertise from their respective cities, research and sectors. This knowledge feeds into the Future of Urban Development and Services initiative’s project model of working with cities around the world to accelerate the transition to smarter, more sustainable urban models.

Advisory Board Members are asked to participate in periodic calls and city-level roundtables or events (approximately 4/5 calls and 1-2 meetings) throughout the year, and serve as an on-call body of experts to be interviewed for perspectives and thoughts for each global and regional activity. Participation cannot be delegated unless specifically stated for the given event, or by exception. Advisory Board Members must participate in a minimum of 2 calls/meetings per year.

Both the Steering and Advisory Boards support Joint Venture work for impact by proposing potential collaborations, approving the most relevant projects, and making their leadership and perspectives accessible to the collaborating partners.

The World Economic Forum Shaping the Future of Urban Development and Services Initiative worked with city leaders in the Champion Cities of Tianjin, Dalian and Zhangjiakou in China from 2012 - 2014, to address the most pressing urban development challenges facing the cities. The Initiative developed a seven step Champion City Model to guide interaction between cities, experts, stakeholders and industry leaders and find solutions to the complex urban problems.

The Steering and Advisory Board produced the Dalian and Zhangjiakou Champion City Strategy in 2014 and the Tianjin Champion City Strategy in 2013. On completion of our work in China we produced the Champion City Model: Scaling and Learning from China leaflet to assist other cities and governments thinking of adopting the model.

Urban DevelopmentMay 2008 – April 2011:

Retrofit Finance (2010 - 2011): One of the biggest opportunities to address the climate change issue in cities as identified in SlimCity was to find innovative ways to finance the retrofitting of buildings. A key output of this work was the Retrofit Finance report.

SlimCity (2009 – 2010) was a World Economic Forum Industry Partnership urban development initiative that provided a risk-free place for Cities and the private sector to exchange best practice and deliver resource efficiency within cities worldwide. The focus of this exchange was on sustainable development of all aspects of a city, to achieve reduced carbon emissions and increased resource efficiency across all sectors.

Arup, collaborated with the Forum to research and produce a set of Knowledge Cards that capture global best-practice and policy across urban mobility, smart energy and sustainable buildings. The cards offer practical solutions to many of the problems facing cities in both the developed and developing world, supporting them towards building a more resilient future. In compiling the cards, Arup’s researchers selected content on the basis that any Mayor could ask the question “Could we do this in our city?”.

The cards were informed by global workshops with SlimCity members, desk research, interviews with Forum members, and global research with 50 cities around the world conducted by ICLEI, the international association of local governments.

The Knowledge Cards can be reviewed using the link here.

SlimCityProduced in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, the SlimCity knowledge cards offer practical solutions to many of the problems facing cities.
