SUMMARY REPORT OF ECOKNIGHTS – ANUGERAH HIJAU

WORKSHOP 2016

INTRODUCTION

This year’s Anugerah Hijau competition strives to enhance students, teachers, school administrators,

parents, policymakers, and government organizations of the awareness on the importance of

establishing greener schools. The overarching aim of the Competition is to educate younger

generations with green building and space knowledge, and nurture green pioneers.

We feel that if the children of Malaysia are nurtured to respect space, and are given the right

knowledge and motivation to utilize space sustainably for a share community, then we will be

setting the right path to developing a new generation whose minds have embraced the element of

sustainability.

The Competition aims to:

1. Promote green space concepts and its related standards among the school community;

2. Nurture critical and creative thinking by providing training to the school community and

encouraging students to express their creative ideas on green space concepts;

3. Recycle and further innovate on green space and its related standards to students and

teachers (and to a lesser extent, interested parents).

For 2016, EcoKnights is going to focus on improving schools on a greener scale in terms of three

concepts: School Farming, Energy Conservation and Efficiency, and Recycling. Each school is

required to have a discussion among themselves (student involvement expected) on starting or

improving these three aspects in their own compounds. After which each school is then required to

submit an entry document proposing their ideas.

FINALIST NOMINATION

After going through numerous impressive submissions from students all over Malaysia, we are

pleased to announce the Anugerah Hijau 2016 finalists in our Green School category.

It is exciting and thrilling to have received various amazing ideas proposed by our enthusiastic

participants who are taking up the challenge to create a more sustainable and environment-friendly

world.

Anugerah Hijau proposals were submitted by students from a total of 18 schools across Malaysia.

We are excited to have so many different perspectives represented in our competition!

Below is the list of schools from which students have submitted their Anugerah Hijau proposals and

have become finalists of Anugerah Hijau 2016:

All finalists are required to attend a compulsory capacity building workshop from the 29th to 31st

July at Jungle Lodge Alang Sedayu, Gombak to qualify for the competition. During the workshop,

finalists will get to meet their mentors and judges who will help develop the skills necessary to

produce the best project possible.

PRE-WORKSHOP

During the site visit accompanied by the Supervisor of Alang Sedayu, Mr. Baiduri, who gave us a tour

around the beautiful place. This space was where most activities were carried out.

Various methods of advertising were used to announce the event to the public such as the

press release published on the EcoKnights’ as well as the Anugerah Hijau website, and the

creation of the Anugerah Hijau Facebook page.

THE FIRST DAY OF ANUGERAH HIJAU WORKSHOP 2016

The event started as participants arrived one by one and registered at the main counter located at

the TTDI Community Hall. Participants arrived a bit late which caused a thirty-minute delay for the

event. A light breakfast was also prepared for the participants and teachers before departing from

TTDI. Around 9.45 am, all of us were set to leave for Jungle Lodge Alang Sedayu, Gombak.

Around 10.30 am, we arrived at the destination and were fascinated by the beauty of nature at Alang

Sedayu. The participants and teachers were then showed their dorms.

The event kicked off with an ice breaking session as well as an introduction to the organizing

committee. Jeremy was the MC throughout the whole workshop.

Atiqah, who was in charge of the ice-breaking activities, handled it with full confidence. All the

participants including the teachers loved it.

Participants from different schools formed a group and carried out various activities. They sure know

how to break the ice!

Participants who made mistakes during the activities had to perform something. These two girls

performed a catwalk and it was really entertaining.

Around 12.30 pm, the ice-breaking session ended and it was time for lunch. The food throughout all 3

days at Alang Sedayu was absolutely delicious!

As you can probably tell, the teachers were satisfied with the food.

The first major session for Anugerah Hijau Workshop began, and was presented by our very

own founder and president, Yasmin Rasyid.

The participants were given a creative task by Yasmin which required them to present a prototype on

what makes their school green to the audience on the second day during Yasmin’s second session.

Participants had to jot down their own ideas on what they think makes a greener school. They were

given sticky notes and stuck them on the wall of the counter.

The participants applying their ideas to the project that Yasmin requested them to carry out. They did

their best to get a prototype of their ideas for greener developments in the future.

The second session was carried out with Mr. Anthony Wong, the founder of Jungle Lodge Alang

Sedayu, Gombak. He gave a talk regarding his successes and endeavours in making the world more

sustainable to live in.

We took this golden opportunity to take a photograph with the founder of this beautiful place.

No activities and sessions? Dodgeball it is!

Students and facilitators alike, enjoying themselves while waiting for the next activity.

Our next challenge was by throwing ourselves in the fish pond and trying in vain to catch some fish.

Unfortunately, we were unable to catch any big fish. Only tiny ones were caught in the net.

Participants and facilitators who can’t get enough of diving into ponds and pools.

The second day began with Ir. Thirukumaran introducing his skills and knowledge of engineering and

energy efficiency to the participants.

The session got even more interesting when Ir. Thirukumaran introduced his colleague who showed

the participants a prototype which uses sunlight to cook food. Amazing!

The EcoKnights team gave a token of appreciation to Ir. Thirukumaran for his sharing of knowledge

to all of us. Not forgetting a big shout-out to our main sponsor, The Body Shop!

The next session was with the co-founder of PopTani Asia, Mr. Sheikh Shahnaz. His session was very

enjoyable and we could see that the participants were keen and eager to listen to what he had to

say.

Before the next session started, participants were called out to learn about bamboo cooking. Mr.

Baiduri and Tok Batin demonstrated some skills needed in bamboo cooking.

Remember the first session where Yasmin told the participants to come up with prototypes? This is

one of them! They were required to tell the mechanism and benefits of the prototype.

Yasmin made conclusions based on all of the participants’ presentations. She gave credits to all of

them who showed tremendous efforts in creating their prototypes.

All the participants took a photo with their incredible prototypes. Yasmin looks elated!

Not to forget giving her a precious token of appreciation sponsored by The Body Shop.

The final session for this memorable second day has been great with Mr. Rudy Malik, the CEO of

iM4U, who introduced himself and his team to the participants. He truly gave us spirit to be involved

with volunteerism no matter where we are.

The session continued with his assistant conducting an interactive talk with the participants. He also

showed some videos regarding volunteerism.

The session ended with a group photo with the CEO of iM4U.

After all sessions were over, the participants were required to carry out their own bamboo cooking.

The organizing committee took their chance fooling around in the river.

At night, the participants were required to present their talents. They look cute indeed!

After the presentation, we made a campfire and participants, facilitators, and teachers alike

gathered around it. We played a game called ‘Mafia’ which was introduced by one of our facilitators,

Bazil.

The participants were very enthusiastic and things got complicated, resulting in a heated yet friendly

argument.

On the last day of the workshop, the organizing committee was challenged by our supervisor, Fadly,

to soak ourselves in the river at 7 am. All of us braced ourselves and took up the challenge.

The last day was quite a day for everyone, as we went jungle trekking and experienced the beauty of

flora and fauna.

Participants took their chance playing at the waterfall after an hour of trekking. The best day of their

workshop!

After a memorable jungle trek, everyone was required to pack and get ready to leave. Some of the

participants presented their thoughts regarding the workshop and a majority of them want it to be

carried out more often in the future.

All the finalists received certificates and also RM 500 grant to enhance their projects. We really hope

that all of the finalists do their best in the next stage of the 2016 Anugerah Hijau competition.
