ENTRANCE RITE

PRELUDE Pastorale Cesàr Franck WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination

Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name

of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ENTRANCE HYMN, #660 Lift High the Cross APOSTOLIC GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray...O God, through suffering and rejection you bring forth our salvation, and by the glory of the cross you transform our lives. Grant that for the sake of the gospel we may turn from the lure of evil, take up our cross, and follow your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD

FIRST READING: Isaiah 50:4–9a 4The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens — wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty?

Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

CHILDREN’S WORD SECOND READING: James 3:1–12 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2For all of us make many mistakes. Any-one who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. 3If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. 4Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 6And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, 8but no one can tame the tongue — a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. 10From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. 11Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? 12Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA VERSE

GOSPEL: Mark 8:27–38 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the eighth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 27Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" 28And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." 29He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." 30And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. 31Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to re-buke him. 33But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get be-hind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." 34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy an-gels."

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY, #704 When Pain of the World Surrounds Us PRAYERS AND PEACE Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs…

...Gracious God Hear our prayer.

Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

SERVICE OF THE MEAL

OFFERING

OFFERTORY MUSIC 8:30 Women’s Ensemble How Can I Keep From Singing? Lowry, arr. Ellingboe 11:00 Chancel Choir O Praise Ye the Lord Parry OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray...Merciful Father, we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us—our selves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of the one who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OPENING DIALOG AND PROPER PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal: you we praise and glorify, you we worship and adore. You formed the earth from chaos; you encircled the globe with air; you created fire for warmth and light; you nourish the lands with water. You molded us in your image, and with mercy higher than the mountains, with grace deeper than the seas, you blessed the Israelites and cherished them as your own.

That also we, estranged and dying, might be adopted to live in your Spirit, you called to us through the life and death of Jesus, who in the night in which he was betrayed, took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Together as the body of Christ, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes: Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. With this bread and cup we remember your Son, the first-born of your new creation. We remember his life lived for others, and his death and resurrection, which renews the face of the earth. We await his coming, when, with the world made perfect through your wisdom, all our sins and sorrows will be no more. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Holy God, holy and merciful one, holy and compassionate, send upon us and this meal your Holy Spirit, whose breath revives us for life, whose fire rouses us to love. Enfold in your arms all who share this holy food. Nurture in us the fruits of the Spirit, that we may be a living tree, sharing your bounty with all the world. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit. Holy and benevolent God, receive our praise and petitions, as Jesus received the cry of the needy, and fill us with your blessing, until, needy no longer and bound to you in love, we feast forever in the triumph of the Lamb: through whom all glory and honor is yours, O God, O Living One, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy church, now and forever. Amen.

FRACTION AND INVITATION DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION We welcome all who desire to receive the Lord’s body and blood for the forgiveness of sin and renewal of life to join us for Holy Communion. August is a strong month for Phinney Finances

So often when one reads an announcement about finances at church the news is gloomy – the ex-penses have overtaken the offerings. It can seem like we’ll never meet the ministry goals that we have set for ourselves. This announcement carries a different sort of news – a note of celebration and thanksgiving. For the second month in a row (and in the summer!) the offerings of the faithful at Phinney have been greater than our expenses, thereby reducing our over-all deficit in the Gen-eral Fund for the year to just <$5,000>. As a point of comparison, last year at this time our Gen-eral Fund deficit was <$38,000>. Faithful giving is one of the many building blocks of a vibrant community of faith. It takes the equal sacrifice of every single person to make the whole body of Christ healthy. Thank you, eve-ryone, for your generosity and support – it is a sign of the community’s shared commitment to Christ. The months ahead will continue to both challenge and reward us. Please keep your offer-ings to this ministry we cherish as a first priority. It is our return on the investment of our God who cherishes each one of us above all else.

All visitors (long term and short term) are welcome to learn more about growing a deeper relationship with this congregation and life of faith. Child care will be available.

Monday Morning Makeover, tomorrow Once a month on Monday morning several dedicated souls get together to provide some “sweat equity” on facility projects around the church. This month we are gathering on September 14 from 9-noon and we will be preparing the Sunday school classrooms for the beginning of Sunday School. This will range from cleaning windows and organizing classroom materials to touch-up painting. Everyone is welcome to come. This activity will be child friendly. Please sign up on Count Me In.

Networking Lunch - Special Date This month, our Networking Lunch for people seeking employment will be on Wednesday, Sept 16 at 12 noon in the Tree of Life room. We moved to Wednesday to accommodate a spe-cial speaker who is a Job Placement Coach at Chase/WAMU. He will offer us some insights into networking in today’s job search environment. As usual, we’ll also enjoy a delicious lunch and warm conversation. Please mark the Count Me In form if you are interested in coming.

TAPESTRY GARDEN

It’s just one week until our Tapestry Garden installation. Between services on Sunday, Sep-tember 20, we’ll join together as a community of faith to create something truly wonderful with our own hands – and our own donations of sedum and bits of sea glass, small rocks or other beau-tiful, shiny things. A sample display is by the Art Wall—have a look! Come to worship dressed for gardening chores that day. After coffee cart we’ll gather together under the leadership of our landscape team to plant and pray. There will be additional sedum plants available for a $3 dona-tion next Sunday.

Men of the Parish! Sign up today for Men’s Bible Study Breakfast. It’s coming soon – September 26 at 8:30 a.m. in the Tree of Life Room. On Count Me in today you can indicate your interest in either cooking or attending. Pastor Hoffman will be our Bible Study leader.

Festival Celebration of Full Communion between the ELCA and the United Methodist Church

A festival Eucharist will be held on September 27 to celebrate the recent decision to enter into full communion with the United Methodist Church. Worship will begin at Woodland Park United Methodist at 78th and Greenwood at 7:00 p.m. and then process to PRLC. This is not just for our two congregations but for our synod and the UMC conference. The ELCA now has full communion partnerships with six denominations. Come and celebrate with us.

St. Francis Blessing of the Animals Mark your calendar for the annual St. Francis Celebration on Sunday, October 4 at 4 p.m. on the front lawn. A brief liturgy in celebration of all creation will be followed by the individual blessing of pets and their people. All pets are welcome. Invite your neighbors and friends, too.

Next PRLC Community Meal: October 4th! On a Sunday evening in July, we hosted about 50 guests at PRLC for a free community meal. The event was a great success bringing many new people to our church as well as old friends we hadn’t seen in a while. Many of you volunteered to help set up, bring pot-luck dishes, sit and chat with visitors, and clean up afterwards. It was a wonderful event and something we hoped to repeat periodically down the road. We now have a date for our next meal: October 4 at 5:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. Volunteer sign-ups are at Grace Station, and all are welcome to come and share in the pot-luck meal.

Circle Groups in September Pastor Hoffman will be leading a study of I Kings 8:22-30 at the following dates and times:

Salem Circle Wednesday, September 16, 9:30 a.m., Ida Culver House, Room B-321 Bethany Circle Monday, September 21, 9:30 a.m.

Dear Phinney Kids (and parents too!),

Sunday School begins September 27 at 10 am! This year the first day of Sunday School will begin downstairs in Fellowship Hall with

cocoa and refreshments available at 9:45 a.m. We hope you will grab a cookie, find

your teachers and introduce yourselves. Your teachers will want to know how old you

are, what grade you are in and your favorite thing about Sunday School—they are really

excited to meet you!

Your Sunday school teachers will guide you to your Sunday school room when you are

ready to go. If you arrive after your teacher has already gone upstairs, don’t worry!

Abigail will be available to walk you up and help you find the right class.

Parents, the first day of Sunday school is really important! It is reserved especially for

exploring classrooms, chatting with teachers, and getting to know one another. Regis-

tration cards will be available for you to fill out so that we will know how to stay in con-

tact with your family. These also help us keep your child happy and safe all year long.

THE LUTHERAN Monthly Magazine Each year the congregation subscribes to THE LUTHERAN magazine for each member house-hold. By doing so, we are able to provide this important chronicle of the ELCA’s life and activi-ties so that everyone can stay current with the ministry that happens beyond the walls of Phinney Ridge here in Seattle.

Were you to subscribe on your own, the cost to you would be $18.00. Since we subscribe en masse the cost is much lower, only $8.00. In order to be able to continue to reach every house-hold with the important news that THE LUTHERAN offers, you are invited to reimburse the con-gregation for the lower subscription rate of $8.00. Of course a gift in any amount is wel-come. You can use the pew offering envelopes and mail it to the church office or simply drop it in the offering plate any Sunday morning.

THE LUTHERAN is one of those items that is almost always "on the chopping block" at budget time. In order for the congregation to continue to offer this every-member subscription, your help in reimbursing the church for you own copy is really important. Thanks for your support.

Choir Program Phinney is a singing church, and there are opportunities to share your musical gifts in a variety of ways. Whether you’re three or ninety-three, there is a place here for you to sing. Angel, Cherub and Choristers Choirs give kids between 3 years and 6th grade an outlet to offer their praise and learn the fundamentals of reading music and liturgical choral leadership. Seventh through twelfth graders further refine those skills in Youth Choir. Adults find opportunities for singing in either a Gospel or a classical style with the Gospel and Chancel Choirs, respectively. All of these groups rehearse during the program year (Sept-May) once each week. Vesper Choir, an adult group that sings once each month for Evening Prayer, offers adults a chance to sing with one monthly re-hearsal, held just prior to the Sunday evening service itself – 6:15 p.m. The back of your worship bulletin has contact information for each choral director. They would be happy to hear of your desire to blend your voices into a choral group to lead worship at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church.

There are also instrumental opportunities through handbell choir and by offering your instrumen-tal gift as a worship prelude, offertory, or accompaniment. Valerie Shields and Beth Ann Bonne-croy can give you more information about those opportunities.

A recital at PLU-Tacoma Washington Aaron David Miller will be performing on the beautiful Fritts organ in Lagerquist Concert Hall on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Washington, this coming Sunday, September 13 at 3 pm.

God's Work, Our Hands… Phinney's Ministry in Christ's Name

While our media is full of doom and gloom economic reporting, it can be hard to re-member what this looks like in the lives of actual people. This special section of the Sunday bulletin is set aside to share a specific story of economic distress. We hope this will help our church community better understand these difficult times and craft a more informed plan to assist those in need.

Fedir came to our office very excited. With a thick accent, I couldn’t tell what he wanted at first. I found out he had been to PRLC a few years ago and then returned to Russia. He came back to Seattle to be treated for a serious medical issue, but didn’t have the means to support him-self yet. His son was coming to Seattle from another state to help out, but couldn’t make it for a few weeks. Fedir told me how wonderful Pastor Hoffman had treated him many years back, and that’s why he returned to PRLC now in his time of need. Sadly, at the time Fedir came in, we were out of funds for motel assistance for the month. We try to stick to a monthly budget in or-der to help as many people as possible, but turning people away and referring them elsewhere is a difficult part of the job. Though we can help 5 or 6 people a month with rent/motel assistance, we get about 15-20 requests. I told Fedir if he still had a need around the first of September, he should come in again. He did, and we were able to help him with a motel last week. He was in-credibly grateful and I plan to have coffee with him soon to hear about his life. Thanks for your continued support of our Outreach Fund, and of the work we do to meet the spiritual and mate-rial needs in our community.
