Spelman’s ninth president,Beverly Daniel Tatum, shared a historic momentwith Board of Trustees Chair,June Gary Hopps, C’60, ather Inaugural Ceremony thispast March. The Spelmancommunity celebrated Dr.Tatum’s official installationwith a weekend of activitiesincluding an inaugural sym-posium, ceremony, studentparty, reception, worshipservice and an alumnae tea.

THE SPRING SEMESTER WAS A VERY BUSY ONE, MARKEDby several major institutional events – the inauguration andthe weeklong Founders Day activities. Thanks to the effortsof many, the inaugural weekend was a great success. I havereceived many messages from delegates around the countryas well as campus constituents about how impressed theywere with all of the activities. My favorite message was froma student who wrote, “I just want to let you know that yourinauguration reminded everyone here of what a wonderfulplace Spelman can be.”

The celebration of Founders Day continued in thepositive spirit of inauguration. Our Founders Day speaker was Major General Marcelite JordanHarris, C’64. Dr. Johnnie Hines Protho, C’41, received a Doctor of Science honorary degree, and Dr. Mildred Ponder Stennis, C’47, received the Founders Spirit Award. Faculty memberswere also honored: Dr. LaConyea Butler, C’56, received a True Blue Award and Dr. CynthiaSpence, C’78, was bestowed the Fannie Lou Hamer Award. Sisters Chapel was quite a buzzduring this lovely ceremony.

This buzz continued during “Lord! I Got a Right to the Tree of Life,” the culminatingevent of Cosby Chair Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon. More than a 1,000 people packed theChapel on April 15 for a tribute evening to early African American sacred songs. The electriccharge that surged the crowd during this event was transferred to the keys of the Sisters Chapelorgan when Dr. Joyce Finch Johnson performed a spirited ‘last gasp’ prior to the Chapel closingon April 28 for renovations.

We look forward with a great anticipation to sitting in the newly renovated chapel with air-conditioned comfort, convenient restrooms and expanded balcony seating. And when we do,we will know that it was Spelman alumnae, students, parents, trustees, faculty, staff and friendsof the College that made these improvements possible. To make a donation, send your contri-bution to Sisters Chapel Campaign, Spelman College, Box 1303, 350 Spelman Lane, SW,Atlanta, GA 30314-4399.

The spiritual life of the campus will be invigorated in another way as well. Dr. RenitaWeems, a nationally known Hebrew Scriptures scholar from Vanderbilt University, will join thePhilosophy and Religion Department in the fall as the new Cosby Chair in the Humanities. Inaddition, both Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon C’70 and Dr. Sheila Walker will remain onboard asCosby Chairs. Also, former Cosby Chair Ayoka Chenzira is now a permanent member of theWomen’s Studies faculty.

As I look forward to the 2003-2004 academic year, I reflect on the fact that we accomplishedour goals last year through the generous contributions from our alumnae, parents and friends;faculty and staff; foundations and organizations; corporations and our corporate partners. We areenormously grateful for this show of support as demonstrated in a special section of this issue ofInside Spelman. Thank you for reinforcing the student’s comment above about Spelman–“whata wonderful place.” l

Mathematics Professors Receive $246,137 Grant pelman College mathematics pro-fessors Nagambal Shah and Mon-ica Stephens are the recipients of a

$246,137 grant from the National ScienceFoundation for the curriculum developmentproject entitled Collaborative Research:Training Environmental StatisticiansUsing Complicated Data Sets to MakeMore Informed Environmental Decisions.

The grant is for a collaborative projectbetween Dr. Shah and Dr. Stephens at SpelmanCollege and Dr. William Swallow, Dr. KimberlyWeems and Professor William Hunt at NorthCarolina State University. Several governmentalagencies, including the Georgia Environ-mental Protection Agency Region 4 and theGeorgia Department of Natural Resourcesare co-supporters and clients of this effort.

The goal of the project is to expose stu-dents to an application-based experience inenvironmental statistics. More specifically, the project will (1) provide a consultingopportunity for the students with federal, state or local agencies; (2) focus on theapplication of students technical skillsthrough data analysis to a real problem; (3) have the students gain consulting expe-rience; (4) help develop students oral andwritten communication skills; and (5) keepminority students in the pipeline to pursuegraduate studies in environmental statisticsand the environmental job market.

The project has three major components.A course in environmental statistics will betaught during the spring semesters of 2004,2005 and 2006. The Spelman Summer

S Environmental Statistics Institute willsupport student research during thesummers of 2004, 2005 and 2006. Duringthe summer, an interdisciplinary team ofstudents will work with data provided byvarious clients such as the Department ofNatural Resources and EPA Region 4.

The students will then analyze the dataand report the results of their analysis to theclients thus helping the clients make betterenvironmental policy decisions. In the thirdcomponent, materials from the programwill be disseminated to the public via theInternet and through workshops so thatsimilar collaborations between other institu-tions and government agencies may occur. l

Q: What inspired you to apply for the Watson Fellowship?

A: My first exposure to the Watson Fellowship was through the appli-cation process of several friends. Whether it was never-ending revisionsor jitters before their interviews, each of them had to confront the trialsof applying for this prestigious and competitive fellowship. I began toseriously consider applying after attending an internal informationsession about fellowships available for graduating seniors.

The Watson Fellowship stood out to me; their focus was on identi-fying independent young women and men who were willing to taketheir enthusiasm for whatever they loved abroad for the next year. Ijumped at the opportunity to be one of the chosen few.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish as a Watson Fellow?

A: I am truly overjoyed and proud to represent Spelman College as itsWatson Fellow. It is my honor to continue to show the world what itmeans to be a “woman who serves.” My hope is to learn how grassrootsorganizations fulfill the roles left vacant by the families of displaced chil-dren. In this country, we are in the midst of an era where adults leavemany of our own children vulnerable and attempting to raise them-

selves. I have charged myself to gather the insightneeded to aid this next generation to see beyondtheir immediate circumstance and preserve theirindependence and faith in themselves.

Q: What country do you plan on

traveling to and why?

A: My year abroad will be spent in Jamaica and Brazil. Each countryhas a legacy of mistreatment and exploitation of laborers, unequaldistribution of wealth and remnants of colonization. I hope to gain agreater understanding of the experience of Africans in the Diaspora inthe time spent in these two wonderful countries.

Q: What is your major and what are your immediate plans

after graduation?

A: As an Environmental Science major, I have developed a passionfor helping people overcome the detrimental effects of the built envi-ronment on their health. My desire to continue my studies on the

he AUC Peace Coalition was createdin the fall of 2002. At inception, the coalition centered on opposition

to the Iraqi war and served as a voice forpeace. During the spring semester, membersof the coalition distributed information andunveiled the roles of capitalism, material-ism, patriarchy and racism within themotives of the United States war with Iraq.

“The war was real,” states Spelman Col-lege freshman Sarah Thompson, coordinatorof the Atlanta University Center Peace Coali-tion, “we couldn’t turn it off our televisionscreens and move on with our daily lives. We had a responsibility to the rest of thecommunities of the world to stand upagainst oppression when they could not.”

Over the past several months, the 25members of AUC Peace have sponsored astudent speak-out, hosted a panel and par-ticipated in several local, statewide andnational protest rallies. They also partici-pated in a “Day of Silence” in solidaritywith those who were detained in this countryunder the U.S.A. “Patriot Act.”

AUC Peace created, signed and mailedpetitions with over 500 signatures to severalmembers of the United States PresidentialCabinet, as well as key local and nationalelected government officials. They have

urged people to call their local senators tovote against policies that made the war withIraq possible. AUC Peace also held a foodsolidarity day where members ate a typicalIraqi meal under sanctions – rice andbeans.

“Spelman’s history as a black women’sinstitution has given us a special focus onhow the war with Iraq affected women andchildren, especially those of color, becausethey are the poorest people on earth,” explainsMs. Thompson. AUC Peace’s peer educationemphasizes the loss of rights and life thatwomen face as result of war historically, and

the deepened effect of preemptive warfarepossibilities that the war on Iraq opens.

“We supported a prayer service for peoplefrom the AUC and their relatives who werecalled to fight in the Middle East,” says Ms.Thompson. “We realize African Americansare over-represented in military ranks. Weexplain to students how this affects our com-munities. We take time to listen to students’challenges and questions. We are young andwe must create the world that we want to seein the future, today!” l

Creating a Strong Culture of Alumnae Givingn 2000, I took on the responsibility ofserving as one of the SpelAgents forthe 10-year reunion of the Class of

1990. I was shocked to discover that out ofnearly 13,000 alumnae, less than 15 percentwere contributing to the College,” says Adri-enne Lance Lucas, C’90. “It was then that Imade a personal commitment to spread themessage to my Spelman sisters about theimportance of alumnae participation.”

At some institutions of higher education,a strong “culture of giving” is embedded intheir history and passed on from one gener-

ation to the next. Graduates readily accepttheir responsibility to give back, knowingthat their donations should be the largestsource of private funding for their almamater. Their willingness to give continueslong after they have graduated and thisphilanthropic spirit strengthens their bondwith the college.

This commitment is evident at leadingwomen’s colleges across the nation. Institu-tions such as Wellesley, Smith and Mt. Holyoke

boast participation rates from 45 percent toas high as 53.5 percent. Although, Spelmansuccessfully benchmarks itself with thesereputable institutions academically, ouralumnae participation falls far short. Infact, corporations and foundations are Spel-man’s major contributors. Together, theyprovide over half of all private financialresources to the College, while alumnae giftsaccount for only nine percent.

“We are forever in search of a way to‘spin’ the importance of alumnae giving –some perfect, attractive message that will

motivate alumnae to give back to our insti-tution,” says Lance Lucas. “Spelmanwomen should give because it’s the rightthing to do.”

It’s like paying tithes and offerings in thechurch. You offer support not solely becauseof the blessings that have been bestowedupon you and the future blessings to come, but because you know and accept yourresponsibility to the church,” she adds.“Donations to Spelman should not work

any differently. It is our responsibility to sup-port our own.”

Last year the alumnae participation ratewas 16.9 percent; this is far from Spelman’slong-range alumnae participation goal of48 percent. However, there has been a grad-ual increase in the number of alumnaedonors, about one percent each year.

“There is no doubt that Spelman womenlove Spelman. As first-year students, our lovefor our alma mater was immature yetstrong. We often displayed our love duringsocial events with a high-pitched chant‘SPELMAN! SPELMAN!’ As we mature, soshould our love for this institution. Maturelove must translate into financial support,”says Lance Lucas.

“I make this appeal to my Spelman sis-ters to support the College for yourselves, your daughters and your granddaughters.Spelman truly is our heritage and one thatwe should feel honored to support. It onlytakes one gift annually to be counted,” chal-lenges Lance Lucas. “Surely, over the courseof a year – 365 days – every alumna cancontribute at least once.” l
