14 Remembrance

Any spare time could be spent sewing, tying, cutting andgluing all manner of things together to form fabulous outfits. It was amazing to see the creativity and flair shown by ourown CanTeeners. Congratulations to Mereana Tumohe, overallwinner of the CanTeen Wearable Art Event, with her dresssuperbly modelled by Ngarewa Temaipi. Her beautiful dresswas hand stitched fabric overtop of moulded chicken-wire,with a design on the front made of authentic Nelson seaweed. The event itself was a spectacular success with not only themembers work, but support from the local wearable art artistswho lent us their costumes from past years WOW event, andothers who came to support us as judges offering theirenthusiasm and support for the wonderful work of themembers who participated in the event. Even the staff andvolunteers came up with creations that added to the fun of theevening. The night was finished off with a great duke box danceto burn off the last of our energy.A big thank you goes to Elspeth and her helpers for organisingthe evening and providing many of the materials that wereavailable for everyone to use, and to Princess Hart, a localwoman, who brought along natural materials such as seaweed, feathers and shells for people to use in their designs.

Mereana talks about her Wearable Art Creation and her

experiences at National Camp, page 14

Dear CanTeeners,

Hope everyone had a good break overthe Christmas/New Year period andmanaged a well-deserved rest. Thesummer weather has been crazy! In February our National Manager, John Robinson resigned. Johnhad been employed by CanTeen for just over 2 1/2 years. DuringJohn’s time with CanTeen, he oversaw a number of changes withinthe organisation. We wish John all the best for the future.Moving forward, the Board has the challenging task ahead ofthem to find a new Manager for the organisation, someone whocan assist in leading us into the future. In the meantime, Mr JimBarclay, CEO of the Child Cancer Foundation has been appointedActing National Manager. The Board felt this to be hugelyimportant in the daily management of CanTeen. Jim will overseethings for us until we can find a permanent replacement. In February Lee Ayson (Waikato Divisional Co-ordinator) movedon to a new job, Lee will be greatly missed. Lee has been holdingthings together in the Waikato in a voluntary capacity and by thetime this magazine is printed, we hope to have found areplacement for Lee.At the AGM, we farewell the following Board members: JodiPreston-Thomas, Amy Fairhurst, Penny Mitchell, Mel Roberts, andHamish Dillon. I would like to extend my thanks to these peopleas well as the rest of the 2004 Board who are continuing in 2005,their commitment of skills and time to CanTeen has been hugelyappreciated. Contrary to my last magazine report, I will be standing forNational President for one more term (It’ll be my last, I’ll be tooold to stand for another one!), so I may just be writing this reportin a few months time if the board vote me back in.

Things here in the Naki have been going pretty good..... A fewof us (Steven, Greta, Kirsten and myself ) were lucky enoughto head off to sunny Nelson for National Camp. We met heapsof amazing people (after one of us finally getting there) andgenerally had a wicked week filled with many crazyadventures.Last time I mentioned that we were off to play some golf. Youcould say it was a bit difficult to start off with but onceeveryone got into the SWING of things we realised we hadquite a few pros amongst us.We also had our Christmas party to finish off the year withand with a little help from Olivia we managed to haveBUBBLES of fun. It was a good night and enjoyed by all andsome of us even managed to get up and join in with thedancing. Our Secret Santa pressies turned out to be very

interesting and a verygood laugh too.Recently while doing somefundraising we got the chanceto meet Mark Ingles and Tawera Nikau andlisten to them speak of the challengesthey have faced in their lives. Jasminefrom Canteen also got up and spoke of herexperience with Cancer, it was veryinspirational to hear from them all.Our Co-ordinator Diane will be leaving ussoon, she has done some great things forTaranaki Canteen and we appreciate allthe effort she has put it.We have a few things on the cards comingup but I guess you will just have to waituntil next time to find out all about it.Rachel Fendall

By 12.30pm Sunday afternoon the firstcampers were arriving and it was great to putfaces to names as everyone found their roomsand picked up their t-shirts. Monday saw the beginning of activities witheveryone getting into team building, thenrotating around activities: climbing, swimming,go karting, orienteering, archery, low-ropes,and group work with David Garb (volunteercounsellor). By Monday evening theImprovisors had arrived to do some theatregames with us and Deana, Tim and Aaronmanaged to turn some fairly tricky audienceideas (such as how to deal with annoyingbrothers or sisters) into ridiculous scenariosand they didn’t laugh once, although we did! A

members group got together to prepare for theReflection evening on Wednesday. They wantedto make sure members had all the things theythought were important to have on that evening.Tuesday saw us up at Lake Rotoiti enjoying thesun. The cold wind didn’t keep the hardy waterskiers, biscuiters, jet boaters, canoers, andsailors off the water. And didn’t we have ayummy lunch!!! (sausages, hamburgers, saladsand berries and ice cream!! YUM) Wonderfulpeople from all over the Nelson district cameto show us what ‘real southern hospitality’ isall about!!! After dinner, people from the local Maoricommunity came to share about the significanceof the local environment geologically to

Maori, and how some of this knowledgewas used in healing through manydifferent cultures. Senior members alsogot an opportunity to have their ownmeeting where they were able to sharetheir ideas, experiences, strength andhope specific to them. This was somethingoften asked for by older members, so itwas great to see it happening.Wednesday — doing activities again.Finishing off all those ones we didn’t get todo on Monday along with some seriouswearable art work, and getting prepared forthe reflection evening. Wednesday also sawthe arrival of Wayne Nicholls, PaediatricOncologist at Starship, who came toparticipate in a question and answer formatfor members to ask any of those tricky orinteresting medical questions that they mighthave. We were lucky to have an expert groupof CanTeen staff and volunteers there to addtheir knowledge to the forum and supportWayne.Reflection evening took place in a ring of beautiful rocks, candles, and music giving members the time and space to acknowledgeloss, change, or anything else that was going on for them.Thursday rocketed in with members participating in a wide varietyof activities: horse riding; a visit from the local Karate club to teachanyone who wanted to learn a special form; a visit from two BodyShop people to show back, hand and arm massage, makeup andskin care; jewellery making with Katie; a taste of meditation fromRenata (another local guest from Tuesday night); high ropes; go-karting; music production (supported by Harry a local musician) forthe wearable art event; wearable art finish off; set design(supported by Theresa a local artist); flying fox; canoeing; shooting;swimming; medical information with Wayne; talking with DavidGarb our wonderful facilitator/counsellor; and flax weaving withOha, another local who came to share her wonderful craft withwhoever wanted to learn. Thursday was very full and by evening thewearable art event was ready to roll. As you can see from thephotos we have many gorgeous, creative and theatrical CanTeenmembers!! Virtually everyone on the camp spent some time in thewearable art room assisting, creating or providing moral support forthe wonderful work of the artists. (Not to mention the wonderfulcards, certificates, and other art work created by members!) Tineckewas our wonderful fashion designer/wearable art volunteersupervisor who was ably assisted by Nelson Coordinator KatieHughes. I didn’t see Tinecke leave the wearable art room the wholetime we were at camp except when she was in bed, or having dinnerof course!! Friday was the pack up and clear up day with members workinghard to get the cleaning done, fill out evaluation forms, say theirthank yous, farewells, get addresses and have the first ones out thedoor and on the bus by 10.30am. It was a mission but it happened.

I would like to say a very big thank you to the last group to leavethe camp, who ended up on quality control doing far more cleaningthan everyone else. Well done and thank you for continuing on thecamp spirit!! Talking of which, the camp spirit was huge andwonderful and I thank you all for the contribution you made overthis fabulous six days to that spirit —-where over a hundred peoplegot to know each other very well, very quickly and as only CanTeenmembers, volunteers and staff can!!! Also a big, big thank you to allthose staff (paid and volunteers) who worked so very hard and hadlots of fun throughout the camp to make it the success it was. Thanks to Leanne and her PR group, made up of CanTeeners, whowere responsible for the great article in the local paper, a verypenetrating, professional interview on the radio and the squillions ofphotos and videos taken around camp. Hey everybody—- keep in touch and go well over the year and I lookforward to catching up with you at your next national event. All Good ThingsElspeth LambNational Programmes Manager

Fast thrills for NSI CanTeeners! CANTERBURY

WELLINGTON

The Canterbury Driving School were really wonderful hosts, wegot served with fizzy drinks and hot drinks as well as snacksbefore getting the chance to look around the wonderful DrivingSchool workshop. We then each got fitted into a real set ofracing overalls and then the fast action begun. Most of us hadtwo rides each and a couple of us were lucky enough to be

right in the action and spun on a few of the corners while therest of us watched in slight horror. All in all a great morning washad by everyone and we were all very pleased to have had theopportunity to have a ride in those fantastic cars.Keryn Densem,N.S.I Committee Member.

CanTeen NSI would like to thank Canterbury Driving School very much for the best morning out!!!

It was a very fun weekend. In the next couple of months we have alot planned - 4 wheel driving is our nextactivity which promises to be a lot of fun,and summer camp is also on the way. Wealso continue to meet at Starbucks everysecond Tuesday which is a great time tochill out and catch up. Hamish O’ConnorWellington President

We arrived on a balmy37 degree afternoon, and together withNational ProgrammesManager Elspeth, wehit the mall while wewaited for the otherdelegates to arrive.Matt proved to be theultimate shopping

accessory ~ perfect forholding bags, making flattering comments, and clearing a paththrough the crowds with his magic white wand (what a S.N.A.G.) Asthe sun set and the temperature dropped, we even managed a dip atthe beach. But then, alas, the holiday was over. The Aussies arrived and thetaunting started. Matt and I were forced to sit and repeat words like “dentist”, “six” and the good old classic “fish and chips”, whilebeing given regular updates on the disastrous test cricket score.Seriously though, our Aussie comrades were absolutely awesomeand very welcoming. The conference was very well run and included very relevantworkshops. These included Late Effects, Family Relationships andPalliative Care. Key note speakers included our own Marcus Akuhata-Brown that the Aussie organisers had nabbed after they heard hisinspirational speech at a conference in Auckland. Another fascinatingspeech came from an ex-cop nicknamed ‘Sieve’, who survived lyingalone for 3 hours after being shot 14 times in 3 seconds!! Matt and Ilearnt a lot about the structure of CanTeen Australia, and ways theyare tackling issues similar to ours (such as how to cater for oldermembers). The Aussies were also impressed with our ‘Pullingtogether” book, and are looking to create something similar. On Saturday evening we jumped into hired cars for an ‘Amazing Race”around Adelaide’s streets that ended with a dinner and a dance at alovely old surf club on the beachfront. On Sunday afternoon we saidour goodbyes, but it was not to end there. All the divisional

Presidents were staying on for a meeting and invited their new kiwifriends to tag along to their hotel. We spent the last night with themin the classy Holiday Inn, where the Aussie cricket team and HarlemGlobetrotters had the pleasure of our company; they were basicallyfalling over each other to get our autographs....Matt took advantage of this and while talking to Darren Lehmann inthe elevator offered him some advice on how to take it easy on theKiwi’s much to Darren’s laughter. Overall, Adelaide was beautiful, theCanTeeners were inspirational, and the conference interesting andinformative. A huge thankyou to our lovely chaperone Elspeth, and toCanTeen for giving us this opportunity.By Racheal Hogg

I had no idea what toexpect when I arrived at the site and took the opportunity to do allthat I could.I enjoy doing creative things so wasexcited to hear there would be anopportunity to do some cutting andpasting for the Wearable Art show. I havealways loved art and creative things onthe side, mainly painting, but I’m keen ontrying new things so after thinking on itfor a day I finally started looking at whatthere was to play with. Eventually thingsgot going and I was in my zone.

From the beginning we (my sister and I)were just playing around not really surewhat to do. I wanted something feminineand beautiful, but also somethingdifferent and through experimenting wecame up with ‘Paquin’. Instead of workingwith the theme we worked backwardsand worked with the theme last. Once thedress had been made with the help ofsome dried seaweed we found we couldrelate everything to the movie ‘The Piano’(Those crisp large black n white hoopskirts and the sea). Anna Paquin came tomind, therefore the name Paquin.....Itwas as simple as that. The Wearable Art show and the ‘After

party’ was so much fun. It was veryunexpected that things would turn outthe way they did, I had only started with

the thought of having a laugh (which weall did) and I’m glad I did.The experience of this was so valuable,

along with other events, like Dr WayneNicholls, who is a paediatric oncologist. We were able to discuss things with himthat were very relevant to all of us there, considering the experiences that all of ushave had.We were really spoiled with all theactivities available, like our own privateride on a jet boat. Even though theweather conditions were inhumane......itwas worth it.Along with great food, the water slide, swimming pool, beautiful views and weather,go-karting, rock climbing and many otheractivities, I really had a good time.Mereana Tumohe

I see my position as a facilitator... as amember-focused organization, I find itgratifying to assist the members to plancamps, activities and support them in allthey do.The job has so many ‘hats’ to wear. Therole covers many things including

accounts, volunteer recruitment andmanagement, member support, programme development, public relations, various meetings with health professionalsand organizations associated with CanTeen(including CCF, Ronald McDonald House,Volunteering Canterbury, CHOC, OncologyDepartment, CDHB Cancer Network andAdolescent Focus Group...). I could go onand on, and for those of you who know mewell by now, I could. But I’ll refrain! The best part of the position - apart frommeeting and dealing with some of the mostawesome people I have ever met - is thecomplexity of the different aspects of thejob. Every day is different, and there aren’tmany vocations that can say that.A personal ‘reaction’ of my position is thatmy appreciation of life is forever evolvingand growing. I have never in my time ofworking with people in Oncology (previousto this position I was a Radiation Therapist

at Christchurch Public Hospital) had theprivilege of appreciating what limits can beovercome with the right attitude: wherethere’s a will, there’s a way.I was on the National Camp at Bridge Valleyearlier this year and had a ball! I’ve metsome vivacious, talented and inspiringmembers that I hope to see many moretimes in future events. CanTeen has a hugearray of dedicated members, staff andvolunteers. So to wrap this up, I love the position! Evenfrustrating times bring about positivechanges and adaptation with continuallearning; I believe everyone could relate tothis. I eagerly look forward to all the 2005events, both from NSI and National. Seeyou there!True to being me, a thought for the day: “The only way to discover the limits of thepossible is to venture a little way past theminto the impossible.” Arthur C. Clarke
