1 We are about to enter an- other hot sum- mer and that also means another hurricane season will soon be upon us. The hurricane season officially starts on June 1 st . Keiser College wants to make sure students, faculty, and staff are prepared if a storm were to hit our area. In addition to items provided by the Red Cross we have a packet of information on preparing for hurricane season, this information is available through the Student Services Depart- ment. The packet also contains informa- tion on the policies and procedures that are in place at Keiser College for the safety of our students. For instance, we now have a toll free number students can call to find out the status of classes at Keiser College should a hurricane affect our area. The toll free number is 1-877- 353-4737 (1-877-3-Keiser). We have a very caring group of individuals at the Tallahassee campus who contribute their time and money to many worthy causes. One cause that we can all get involved in while creating new friends is the Relay for Life event on May 12 th and 13 th at the Leon County fair- grounds. Keiser College will have an official campsite with team members walking on the track at all times during the 18 hour period. This event is fun for the entire family so please bring come out and support the Keiser College team and take a lap around the track in support of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Event. Summer is also a busy time for many families with the public schools being closed. While I want everyone to have a fun time this summer with our families, please stay on track with your education at Keiser College. Many of you work so hard to be here and while the end may not seem close enough, by focusing on your studies and keeping your eye on the prize, your graduation will be here before you realize it. As a reminder, we have a wonderful group of staff and faculty that are here to help get you through difficult times. We want to see everyone succeed and will do what we can to help you achieve your goal of graduation. Have a wonderful summer! Hello and wel- come to our summer semes- ter! This is a very exciting time of year for all students. As the weather continues to grow hotter outside, our classrooms offer cool comfort for students to concentrate on their studies. Keiser College has a great pro- gram to help students who may be strug- gling with the rising gas prices; the pro- gram is called Students Helping Students. We are currently recruiting students to help carpool in different areas: Tallahas- see, Thomasville, Gadsden county and others. If you interested in making new friends and sharing the cost of that EX- PENSIVE gasoline please stop by the Registrar’s office and see Kim Bernath to sign up. We are currently taking applica- tions. With the rising cost of gas, we at Keiser College are trying to help our students stay in school and obtain their degrees. Each week we will be having a drawing for a $50 gas card. In other words, FREE GAS! The only stipulation to get your name in the drawing is to have perfect attendance for the week. All students will be entered automatically-just come to school! Summer also brings the July graduation ceremony. This will be a very special ceremony as the Tallahassee cam- pus will have the first graduation of our Bachelor Degree seeking students to in- clude the first ever BACJ graduates throughout all of Keiser College. Con- gratulations to all our graduates! As always, we continue to invite prospective employers on campus. This is our time to show off Keiser College’s many talented students and present op- portunities to our students. We have had many students who went to work prior to their graduation and some imme- diately upon their graduation. When employers come on campus they are pleased to see everyone in professional dress. Even though it is summer and hot outside, please make sure you are still dressed professionally. We never know when your new boss will be touring cam- pus observing you in class! For those students still looking for summer daycare options for school age children, please stop by the Student Services department. They have a listing of summer camps that was printed in the Tallahassee Democrat. One of the best and very reasonable programs is offered here in Tallahassee by the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation center. Sign up soon-these spots are filling quickly! Message from the SGA President

Thanks to everyone who voted for me as President of the Student Government Asso-ciation. As President, I hope that we can make a difference on the Tallahassee Campus of Keiser College. I am sure that we can with the support of each student.

The purposes of Student Government are to promote the general welfare of the stu-dent body, provide programs to the college community, and to assist in community ser-vice activities. To fulfill these purposes, we need your input and support. We need to know what types of programs each of you would like to see on campus. Just think of all the fun you can have participating and sup-porting community activities.

Again, thank you, and I hope to see each of you at the meetings. So take a few minutes every first and third Tuesday and join me in helping make decisions that will better our campus. You can make a difference and have fun doing so.

May 12th and 13th Leon County Fairgrounds

Starting 6:00 pm Friday, May 12th

Relay for Life is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event—because cancer never sleeps. Relays are an overnight event, up to 18 hours in length.

Hurricane Season Here.

Below is the number to find out if Keiser College is open or closed should a hurricane approach our area.

Hurricanes are nature’s most severe storms. High winds, clouds, and rain move around the calm center, the eye of the hurricane. Next to the eye are the strongest winds, which make up the eye wall. These winds swirl around the eye in a counter-clockwise mo-tion at speeds anywhere from 74 to 200 mph. Hurri-cane Season runs from June 1- November 30, with Au-gust, September and October as the busiest months of the season. In the summer and late fall, the air over the ocean warms up considerably, picks up moisture and begins to move in a circular motion, forming a tropical depression. If the wind speed accelerates above 39 mph, it becomes a tropical storm and is given a name. When the winds reach 74 mph, the storm becomes a hurricane. A striking hurricane creates four major hazards: storm surge, high winds, tornadoes, and heavy rains… Storm surge is a rise in the sea level caused by strong winds. It effects both coastal and inland areas. High winds from 74 to 200 mph, take down trees, houses and anything else in the storm’s path. Tornadoes are often spawned by hurricanes. If this oc-curs, seek shelter immediately in an interior bathroom or small hall, preferably below ground level. Flooding caused by the torrential rains can occur in both coastal and inland areas. Residents of storm-prone areas should purchase flood insurance (which is not provided for in a homeowner’s policy). A hurricane watch is issued when a hurricane or hurricane conditions pose a threat to coastal areas, generally within 36 hours. Everyone in the area cov-

ered by the watch should listen for further advisories and be prepared to act promptly if a hurricane warning or evacuation is issued. A hurricane warning is issued when hurricane winds of 74 mph or higher, or a combination of danger-ously high water and very rough seas, are expected in a specific coastal area within 24 hours. When a hurricane warning is issued, all precautions should be completed immediately. If the hurricane’s path is unusual or er-ratic, the warning may be issued only a few hours be-fore the beginning of hurricane conditions. Stay informed of atmospheric behavior by lis-tening to NOAA Weather Radio. NOAA Weather Ra-dio broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day. It is provided as a public service by the Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and At-mospheric Administration. The NOAA Weather Radio Network has more than 425 stations in the 50 states and near adjacent coastal waters. Weather service per-sonnel use information from Doppler radar, storm spot-ters, state and local officials, satellites and other sources to issue warnings. These watches and warning are broadcast over local NOAA Weather Radio stations and also are retransmitted by many local radio and tele-vision stations. With this information, local emergency management and public safety officials can activate local warning systems to alert communities of an im-pending weather threat.
