programmes

Looking BackWell it’s the end of the year again, and we have completed all of our National Programmes for 2010. This year we have had 336 members attend a National Programme which is fantastic. There have been four R.E.A.L’s, Teen Link, national camp (who could forget National Camp) the Art Workshop; our newbie’s the Empowering Relationships workshop, the Empowering Self Workshop and JOLT, the Leaders Training and Jump Start.

This year has been a fantastic year, with all workshops being offered filling to capacity with Members who always want to know when the next program is being held, and how can they sign up.

Jarnia Leaving UsFor all of those who have attended a National Programme over the past few years would remember Jarnia. She was the lovely National Programme Manager who made sure you all made it to the programmes you were registered to. She left us at the end of this year to move closer to her family in Melbourne. This has left Murray and Michelle running the show. Murray’s email address is [email protected] and Michelle’s email address is [email protected] and both are contactable on 021 900 663. If you have any queries or are wanting to attend any national programs in 2011 please contact one of us.

We will be recruiting for Jarnia’s replacement early 2011, and as soon as we know who is filling her shoes permanently we will let you all know.

Jump Start is a programme that is delivered in collaboration with the Royal New Zealand Air Force where 25 members get the opportunity to tandem sky dive out of a Hercules airplane. This will be the fourth time this event has taken place and it is the only time non Air Force personal get the chance to sky dive from a Hercules.

Jump Start is a special programme and CanTeen’s way of saying “Thank you” to exceptional Members who have helped us out over 2010. We have all 25 names

and are in the process of sending out the registration forms. Members attending this workshop must email Murray at National Office a passport type photo for your security clearance to go onto the Air Force Base, which is where we are jumping from.

Murray’s email address is [email protected]

president’s report

chief executive’s report

Hi everyone!

So the year is quickly coming to an end, and it is a prime opportunity to thank you all for making CanTeen what it is.

Over the year we have seen many members and volunteers give countless hours to help us with our fundraising efforts, attend committee meetings, monthly activities, divisional camps and national events. It is often said that CanTeen couldn’t run without the time, support and passion given to it by everyone involved, and I would like to re-iterate that.

Thank you to everyone that submitted designs for Christmas cards and Bandannas, to everyone that shook a bucket or sold bandannas, who appeared in the media, who cycled, ran, walked, swam etc to help us support all of our members.

The last couple of months leading into Christmas have obviously been very hectic, with Bandanna Challenge taking up a lot of time and energy, but once again it was great to see everyone getting involved in helping promote CanTeen.

Next year we will continue to have a range of awesome activities and programmes you can attend. R.E.A.L, Teen Link, Empowering Relationships and Empowering Self are some pretty phenomenal programs, and I really encourage you to stick your hand up and see if you can attend these. They give you an amazing chance to develop yourself, and some wicked skills that help you both within your CanTeen experience and life outside as well, being it studying, working etc.

Finally to the staff, from the local MLCs, PSCs and MSMs to all of you in National Office – while this is a member lead organisation, we

owe a huge amount of gratitude to you all for helping us make CanTeen what it is. Your enthusiasm, experience and expertise really have a huge impact, so thank you on behalf of all of us members!

Let’s all look forward to next year, to supporting, developing and empowering even more young people throughout New Zealand living with cancer!

Its has been a really busy and exciting last few months with our annual Bandanna Challenge in October being one of the best and most active yet.

In this our very first e version of the CanTeen magazine, there are lots of really cool stories from right across the country about how we engaged our community to get behind us and be a part of Bandanna Challenge (BC 2010) We don’t yet know how much we earned from BC, but it is clear already that we set a new record level of fundraising activities within the BC fortnight.

Some ideas that worked well last year (like bike bashes) worked even better and in more branches this time around. And the wrist bands, while they didn’t all glow, gave us something new to offer the public. Hundred’s of friends of CanTeen again emerged to help us out in many ways like; shaking buckets, shaving heads and legs, running/walking/dancing and they did it all with a smile. I hope you got to see and feel that support for yourselves.

I had lots of chances to get on my bike for CanTeen; in Auckland, Whangarei & Palmerston North. I covered maybe 200km pedalling to raise money and carry the CanTeen flag. I was proud to wear my CanTeen shirt and the buzz to be with crowds of people really connecting with us is amazing.

Thanks to all of our members, staff, supporters and CanTeen partners, who gave their time and skills to help make the campaign such a success.

More good news came in November with a new corporate partner coming on board. The Compass Group are one of the biggest catering and foodservice organisations in the world. Based in over 50 countries, here in NZ they have around 3000 staff catering in hospitals, schools, aged care homes, feeding our army & air force and lots more. Last month we went to three separate Star Awards events hosted by Compass where they recognised their best achievers of the year. At those events their M.D. Glenn Corbett was bright and eager as he told his staff that Compass would be partnering with us nation wide. Members of team CanTeen in Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch spoke to around 500 Compass employees. ‘Big ups’ are owed to our talented presenters who braved the spotlight, went on stage and told their stories for all of us. Cheers to; Guy Alexander, Anna Hocquard, Kaitlin Kilpin, Maureen Williams and Rachel Allen.

Take care and have a great festive season everyone.

Leeann Morgan bids CanTeen goodbye While change is always afoot, it is never easy to say goodbye to someone who’s passion, commitment, drive and success has left CanTeen Northland in a far healthier state than when she inherited it. It is with

heavy heart that we bid Leeann Morgan adieu from CanTeen Northland after her dedicated service. Leeann and husband Brian have been offered and have accepted to take on new challenges in the Waikato.

Leeann has been an absolute rock for the members of CanTeen Northland. Her willingness to do the right thing within a one team approach has seen CanTeen Northland flourish within its membership and activities plus in profile across the whole of Northland. Nothing was ever too

much for Leeann, members always came first and in an massive region driving in the wee small hours was something Leeann was accustomed to do in order to support young people living with cancer in our community.

There is absolutely no doubt that those who have the good fortune to be taught or mentored by Leeann will gain enormously. Leeann leaves very BIG shoes that need filling and we are now in the process to find her replacement.

Leeann, I’m certain I speak for all CanTeen personnel who know you when I say, thanks a million for your brilliant work under very difficult geographical circumstances. You have been exemplary on your CanTeen journey and will be very sadly missed.

We all know you will be extremely successful in your new venture at St Pauls Collegiate. We wish all the very best to you, Brian and the boys. Thank you for your fabulous ethic, effort and success.

Brian Barnett.

Manager CanTeen Auckland & Northland

Bike BashWith the Franklin community, namely the Pukekohe secondary schools and business community being the forerunner of the hugely successful fundraising concept the ‘Bike Bash’, CanTeen Northland were quick to take up the challenge when offered. Leeann Morgan, as sharp as a tack, realised the warm climbs of the far north would be perfect to host the event.

The concept is simply, to sell sponsored bike rides to local businesses or sponsors. Schools, students and business staff ride fitness cycles. Cycles are ridden from 8.00am – 8.00pm in varying blocks of time between one to twelve hours.

Leeann, the CanTeen Northland committee and members managed to engage local businesses and the secondary school community to record breaking levels of both number of teams participating and the dollar amount raised!!

An excellent day was had by all with CanTeen CEO David Pearce and national board member Guy Alexander, coincidentally a local boy, not able to completely head off the northern challenge.

Bike bash is an amazing event and thank you to all of those people who helped make our one a success.

New World Regent in Whangarei hosted CanTeen Northland’s Car Wash during Bandanna Challenge. Members and volunteers did themselves proud by putting lots of smiles on lots of faces throughout a fun day of car washing and sausage sizzling.

Foodstuffs are brilliant to CanTeen, and the support around the New World wash-a-thon was as fantastic as ever. Car washing by CanTeen members and volunteers at the New World not only raised a considerable amount, but also

the profile of CanTeen in the public arena.

Much fun was had with as many people washes as car washes taking place in the heat of the day. Lots of fun and food and content customers with happy tummies. Great day and thank you New World Regent.

BK BREAKERS Near the end of October several members spent the morning with the BK Breakers before returning later that night to see them score a good win over Melbourne! During the morning session we watched them train and shot a few hoops with them too, well we shot at the hoops, but can’t say many of them went in! I think by the end of the training session we all had sore necks from looking up when talking to the 6 foot + giants. When we came

back that night we watched a great game and we had plenty of support from the awesome fans to raise a lot of money. Special thanks to Kate, Ricardo and all of the BK Breakers team for their help in making the night a great success for CanTeen Auckland.

Tim Belin

RAINBOWS ENDAs a thank you to all the members and vollies who helped out with BC fundraising, CanTeen took us to Rainbows End! It was mint sussing all the rides, spinning out on the go-karts thanks Liam bro haha, and going on the bumper cars, fear fall and roller coaster. It was awesome catching up with CanTeeners from Winter Camp and meeting some new ones and of course the food was good haha. Thank you CanTeen and the people of Rainbows End for the best day, CanTeen is mean as! :)

Ihaia Swann

LOOk GOOD, FEEL BETTERLGFB really does make you look good and feel better as it takes your mind off the things we as young teenagers are going through at the moment. From the LGFB team I learnt the right way to apply make up instead of just slapping it on, how to blend it into my skin and the right colours to use. After being pampered with skincare and makeup, we went to Iguacu in Parnell and had a three course meal which was amazing better than my mums cooking. Overall the day was a real treat and definitely brightened my day as I looked good and felt better!

Kirstie Allan

PUKEKOHE BIKE BASHIn October CanTeen members went down to the Bike Bash in Pukekohe. It was a great road trip with Steve’s amazing singing solos, *cough* not *cough*. We all stayed at the Puke netball courts and with the help of some of the members, Nags managed to cook everyone’s breakfast without burning the building down. The Bike Bash was AWESOME to say the least we raised a substantial amount for CanTeen Auckland, as well as losing a bit of weight along the way. All in all the day was a big success but it wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of Surinda Edwards and the organisers. Thank you to these guys and to the whole Pukekohe community, we are really grateful for your efforts and the large amount of support we received.

Isaac Poole :p

SOUTH AUCKLAND FIREFIGHTERS CLOSE SHAVE FOR CANTEEN We were so lucky to have over 30 firemen and firewomen face the clippers and ‘number 0’ to raise funds for our branch. Not only this, but the team at Papatoetoe Fire Station put on a fantastic day of events for family, friends and supporters. The King of Shave Girls were there to do the hairdressing while we all watched on. There was a big rubbish bin of hair at the end, and don’t ask Nadine what happened to her camera that day! There was also a BBQ, bouncy castle, Wii and a fire truck demo. Some of us went up the fire ladder which is VERY tall! THANK YOU to everyone that was involved, and for all your efforts to date.

WHAT ELSE HAS CANTEEN AUCKLAND BEEN UP TO? BANDANNA CHALLENGE – Wow what a month October was! It was a great success for Auckland Branch and we really felt like the community of Auckland was behind us. Thank you to all businesses, volunteers, community groups, CanTeen members and staff who played their parts in the greater whole. What a super team effort with a great result.

JOLT – A series of 10 Self Intelligence (self-awareness and self-management) workshops with the incredible Wade Jackson. A lucky group of Auckland members were able to learn and grow from this amazing opportunity. Big ups to Wade!

ACTIVITIES ‘OVER THE ROAD’ – We’ve been busy “over the road” (aka Hospital) with all sorts of cool stuff, and now with the Xmas build up in full swing, we have a highly decorated teen lounge and are having our amazing Christmas Party there this week!

4 WHEEL DRIVING – The South Aucks Car Club took us Four Wheel Driving among the sand dunes and beaches of west coast Franklin. Some handy off-roading skills were picked up and beautiful weather to top it all off.

COMING UP!GROOVE ON GRAFTON – As the link to this mag goes live, we will be underway with or even maybe just recovered from Groove on Grafton, our second “underground party in the carpark”, and our Christmas and community celebration evening! Tune in next mag to catch up with what went on!

2011 – Welcome Back Party, Summer Camp, Art Workshop, V8 Cars, Tree Adventures, Big Ups, Relax Camp, Look Good Feel Better, DJ Workshops, REAL, Jump Start and much more!! CHECK OUT our events page at http://www.canteen.org.nz/member-events/auckland, our Facebook Page, and watch out for emails, txts and mail from us to keep yourself in the loop! Be cool to see you again soon.

Leader’s Retreat 2010 CanTeen Waikato’s divisional Leader’s Retreat 2010 was an awesome, breath taking and amazing experience. Camp was based at Lake Tarawera in Rotorua, so of course there were some water fun activities with inflatable rafts and kayaks in between all the very helpful learning that took place.

We learnt our different personality types and how to approach each type to help improve the way we function. We also came up with ideas that should help us to increase member participation within our branches which help to achieve our goal of supporting young people living with cancer.

The Sunday was a day no one would forget with two incredible activities, the first being NZ Riverjet and the second at AgroAdventures. NZ Riverjet was a 2 1/2 hour tour along the Waikato River; it started with a nice cruse downstream, in a custom made speedboat nicknamed “The beast” (which is coincidently the name for Tauranga’s van).

Along the tour we stopped to see the sights. The tour guide told us many stories about these attractions, he told us how the forest would be cut down to clear way for dairy farms, he gave us some history on the very valley we passed where native Maori would battle over the land of which was considered a luxury and he gave us information on the thermal park.

The end of the NZ Riverjet was a 50 metre walk to two natural waterfalls through various depths of water and tight squeeze rocks, then we sped back to base where we were off to AgroAdventures. AgroAdventures is like an extreme fun park where they have four main attractions that include the Swoop, the Sweeb, the Agrojet and the Freefall.

Overall the weekend was excellent; we learnt some great new stuff and had lots of fun. Waikato’s Leader’s Retreat 2010 is one weekend that I will never forget for the reason of the valuable information I have learnt and the fun that was had.

A big thanks to all those who helped out with bandanna challenge, it was a great success, with schools and street appeals and fundraisers and stalls and pretty much everything else under the sun. A special and very BIG thank you to our AISEC Volunteers who did an amazing job helping out with BC. What an awesome group of people.

If any of you are interested in attending some national programmes next year please get your thinking caps on as to which ones, I highly recommend these for ALL CanTeeners, they are of great value.

11-13 Feb is Summer Camp and will be at Raglan next year. If you want to go, please get in contact with Ankia via txt or email and put your name down.

Waikato SchoolsOver the last few months we have visited 4 Waikato Schools that have fundraised for Canteen Waikato. Cambridge High School rose close to $8,000 from a head shave and Hamilton Boys High rose close to $3,000 from their head shave. We also visited Melville High School and Waikato Diocesan School for Girls’ Assemblies and thanked them for their support during Bandanna Challenge. Waikato Diocesan also rose over $800 with their fundraising. Thank you to the organisers, Grace Hogan, James Wotton and Anna Sloan, for all your hard work and support you have given CanTeen!

Isaac Ferry-Parker (Waikato Vice-President)

On 16th of October, CanTeen had a ‘Bald is Beautiful’ fundraiser at Hillcrest New World. We sold bandanas and wristbands, and had some people come in to shave heads and wax people’s chests and legs! The fundraiser started at 10am with some of the New World staff getting their heads shaved, and one of the male staff getting his chest waxed!!! The Hamilton East MP, David Bennett was also there and was brave enough to get both his legs waxed.

Over the 2 hours that the fundraiser ran for, a lot of people came through and got their head shaved or got waxed. Two CanTeen members also got their hair shaved – good stuff Casey and Kathryn! It was a great day, and $10,000-00 was raised for CanTeen Waikato Branch. Thank you to Mike, Warren, Damian, Vicky and all the staff from New World Hillcrest who supported us!

Bandanna Challenge 2010 A big THANK YOU goes out to your Committee, members and volunteers who helped on street appeals, stalls and events across the region. Without you we could not raise the money needed to support our

members.

Special thanks to MP Simon Bridges, Keryn Wade, Tga Fire Service, Western Bay Police and to all those that lost their hair, moustaches and leg fluff at our

Wax Wars for a Good Cause, Mount College, Whakatane School and comedy night head-shaves.

We extend our appreciation to all the comedians and actors who donated their time and made me laugh constantly for three hours at the CanTeened laughter comedy night. We also offer our gratitude to all those at the Rotorua Speed Championships who supported Canteen and auctioned bikes to raise money.

Swimming with Dolphins The dolphins decided to make a no show, so with wetsuits and snorkels we jumped into the tepid water to swim with cool looking jelly fish with lights running down their bodies and a few scary looking long tenticled ones. The highlight was being under the water with two curious seals. For those not brave enough to come in to the deep it was not a waste as the whole day we relaxed sun bathing on the deck, with lunch and a dive of the boat. The fins from a large sun fish also made an eerie appearance next to the boat. We had a great time just chilling and hanging out and getting to know and make friends with other members. Thanks to Butler Dolphins who donate a free trip annually.

Auckland vs Waikato Wings, high heels, tutus, leis, halos and bright red lipstick was all Hannah and I needed to be complete. In September Hamilton, BOP and Auckland met up in Hamilton. Everyone thought Hannah and I were just so cool that they went and bought moustaches and army hats, not to mention the super hot cat ears and bows that Logan and Declan were wearing. Psssssh! :P

We had a music competition with Holly, Hannah, Declan and Logan singing and playing guitar which was amazing. We also read out some poems people had written and showed off our fabulous CanTeen coats, Waikato/BOP’s was definitely best ;)

We then had pizza for lunch and had a tenpin bowling competition. Waikato division won vs. Auckland. Later we did the same but with laser strike, which Auckland won - just :P that’s definitely one thing I am not the best at, I walk around a corner, someone scares the living daylights outta me and promptly kills me. But all was worth it as Waikato won the branch to branch cup.

It was an eventful, humorous, relaxing day and I hope everybody enjoyed themselves.

Zoe Mayhew.

Music & Art What a talented bunch of members we have!! Danni, Logan, and Hannah have performed live on Classic Hits Radio, at the Mount College Head-shave in front of over 300 students as well as at the CanTeen Laughter comedy night and Groove on Grafton. Dex and Logan put everyone into hysterics for the comedy night with their 10 minute sketch. We also have a regular group of artists that get together and work on their own ideas in a wide range of mediums. We have many great things planned for 2011 so come join in.

Equestrian Therapy One of the greatest things about CanTeen is the way they encourage us all to try new things, to get out of our comfort zones and do things we wouldn’t normally do. And at the end of the week I had spent at RDA in Welcome Bay I could say I’d ridden a horse!

I was part of a lucky group of five CanTeeners that were chosen to participate in a four-part program held by Riding for the Disabled. We were taught everything from how to catch our horses to grooming, feeding, saddling and riding, all in a fun friendly and safe environment.

The program was perfect for me because I’d never ridden a horse before let alone taken care of one, so all of the information was brand new to me. My horses name was Peanut; a beautiful chestnut mare with a fondness for flicking hay at me when I was grooming her.

We had a chance to ride bareback and learnt how to saddle up the horse and to control it with the reins and our voices (though Peanut often had a mind of her own). On the final day we were taken on a blind ride (our horses were led by handlers while we closed her eyes) this was so we could feel the horse’s movements and understand them more.

But my favourite part of the final day was when we were taught to trot. It was difficult to get the rhythm at first but once I had it down I was really enjoying myself. At the beginning of the programme I never would’ve thought I was going to enjoy it as much as I did. It was so good to get out of the house and try something I wouldn’t normally do.

The wonderful staff and volunteers at RDA Tauranga made it all so easy and any fear I had was gone. I’d love to ride horses again and I’m sure my fellow horse riding CanTeeners would agree. Thanks RDA! (Oh and you too Peanut!)

Winter Camp 2010 I had a fantastic time at winter camp this year! We started off with a group leaving from Palmy early to do a presentation at Ruapehu College, which included learning the Saturday night fever dance and playing touch

Thanks to members Josh and Ethan for showing us around and organising the fundraising at Ruapehu College.

Saturday meant an early morning wake up to hit the slopes to toboggan, ski or snowboard. I had a mint time snowboarding somewhat carving

it up or face planting haha. Sunday’s bad weather didn’t see many members up the mountain but the rest of us had a great time rock climbing or playing a ridiculous amount of cards….

It was a blimmin fantastic weekend!!! Thanks sooo much to all the amazing staff and volunteers that made the weekend possible and thanks heaps to all the members I met, you guys are awesome! Anna Hocquard

REAL completely changed my life. I realised in myself that the most amazing gift you can give yourself and others is being true to yourself! On REAL I discovered how much I let peoples judgments hold me back from who I am, but now I know that when I am honest with others and myself I develop stronger relationships with people, when we share our dreams, passions and fears it is not a sign of vulnerability yet a sign of courage.

On REAL I was exposed to a frame of mind where I fully am grateful for the impact, positive or negative, people have had on me as it’s helped me grow to the person I am today and its awesome to tell people how amazing they are while we still have that chance.

Thank you so much to David Garb and my wicked group for helping me discover the true me....and thank you so much to CanTeen for providing this life changing workshop! Live life!

Anna Hocquard

Empowering Relationships This programme was amazing to say the least, I couldn’t believe what I could find out about myself and my peers within a weekend. I felt inspired and very motivated after this experience and was ready to use some of the skills learned in this workshop in my own life and be able to see the results of this and in which it would help me and my peers in a positive way :) Oh and once again the food was amazing, I felt this had to be mentioned because it is just choice as!!

Daniel Harrison

Empowering Relationships was a great experience once again I have come away with more skills thanks to David Garb

Scott Webby.

Empowering relationships was one camp I’ll never forget! It wasn’t the great food or picturesque setting that will stick in my mind forever but, more how the program has changed my life and how I view relationships and myself. What I learnt you could not put value on and I would recommend to every CanTeener put your name down to go! Big thanks to our group and of course David Garb you were all amazing and it wouldn’t of been the same without you guys and girls! Also much respect to Daniel & Ashley for running to the top of the cliff with me! One team! We owned it!

Cycle de ManawatuIn early November David Pearce and myself attend the Tour de Manawatu, a cycle event where CanTeen Manawatu was the main charity being supported. After David had pushed himself along the 116km course we attended the prize giving to say thank you to everyone who had been a part of the event. Just again a big thank you to Phil and the Fitzherbert Lions Club and to all the amazing volunteers, sponsors and competitors who where involved in the Tour de Manawatu. Proceeds from the event are going towards a much needed van for CanTeen Manawatu - Whanganui!!

Adrian Bradley

BC2010 With BC over for another year we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers, local businesses, schools and of course our wonderful members in Manawatu and Whanganui who helped make BC2010 a success. I’d especially like to thank the Fitzherbet Lions Club for their fantastic Cycle de Manawatu event and to our own Adrian Bradley who ‘owned it’ during his wonderful speech at the event prize giving. Well done everyone.

Christmas Party with the Coastguard! Christmas party this year was pretty awesome! Great food and great company. Merry Christmas everyone!

Caitlin Kilpin

I had so much fun at our Xmas party this year. We were incredibly lucky to again be involved with the Manawatu Coastguard who generously donated their time and boats to take us out in the sea and jet ski and boat around for a few hours! I fell off an epic FOUR times but had a blast. Following this we had a really yum BBQ and gave each other presents. Thank you so much to our volunteers and Anita for helping organise it and especially to the awesome guys from the Coastguard you guys rock!

4 Wheel DrivingHey guys :) For our last (and maybe the best) activity of the year we got to go4 wheel driving. Some may say it was awesome, some may say it was muddy. I say it was both. First we gave Anita a gift for her job, then we headed over to their field on a farm. We then picked a car, hopped in, and got stuck in the mud. We had a mud fight which was revenge from last year. Dan, Dom, Ashley, Lochie, Andrew C, and I were all to blame!! Shannon was the first to get thrown in the mud, then Anita, then Abi. Then it was basically all on all. We all had epic time and heaps of fun and I’m sure we are all ready for next year. See ya in 2011, Merry Christmas.

love from Kea (matrix) :)

Winter Camp 2010Wow!! Yet another amazing camp pulled off by the Central Division. Winter camp started off well, with get to know you games and interactive rules! After an amazing dinner served to us by very nice waitresses. The next day was up the mountain for all!! Skiing, snowboarding or just chilling in the café. The weather wasn’t exciting but it was good enough for a wicked morning up the mountain! After lunch the question was, stay up the mountain, or off to the hot pools?? It was up the mountain for me, more skiing to be done! Another yummy dinner and time for movies or just chilling and chatting. Sunday morning was mountain or not…mountain it was for me. The visibility wasn’t the best but it was amazing fun!!! It was snowing, by the time I had reached the bottom I was completely covered in snow. Overall it was an amazing camp, thank you to all the staff and the members that went and made it such a good weekend!!

Cheers Josh!

President Ash Well, it’s been an eventful second half of the year here in the Bay. Our monthly activities have included: tug-boating; a mystery race around Napier; 4-wheel driving (real style- not like Auckland did!); an entertaining dessert night; and other stuff. We had planned for Harley rides in November, but the weather forced a postponement. As well as our mothlies, we’ve had other stuff happening. We’ve had two separate headshaves since July. Bandanna challenge was great this year, with huge member involvement. At the end of September, Josh stepped down as our Pres, and I took over. This has been an enjoyable role to step in to. We’ve had some big fundraising taking place since then - the support we have received from the public has been huge. In fact, it’s been so great that we are now in the process of purchasing a CanVan to help us with transport of local members. I believe the Bay has rounded out the year in style. Now looking forward to seeing the rest of Central Div in February at LTCC- it’s gonna be good!

God bless Ash :)

BCingHawkes Bay sold bandannas and UV wrist bands and made heaps of money! Dan Carter was the best selling bandanna (again). Our member involvement was much improved on last year, and as a result so were our figures. Most people sold a box of bandannas and did great. Some of our members had mufti days held at their school, and I shaved my hair to raise money. My friend let me borrow the shaver. People came to watch to support me and CanTeen. :)

Thanks Ash :) you’re the best love Kea (matrix) :)

A highlight of BC10 was a “wax off” between Tumu Timbers and Alexander Construction Napier. Tumu Timbers went hell for leather with their sponsorship efforts and were all on board from the word go. Alexander Construction were a bit slower to get the ball rolling but came out on the night with guns blazing!!!

Five beauty therapists individually volunteered their time and efforts and wax for the night, and two hairdressers came to shave the heads of those brave enough to sit in the chairs of doom.

Thanks to Ritchell Maxwell from Radio Network gave her MCing skills a blast with a running commentary of all the waxing action that night.

At the end of the night 18 brave hairless souls had handed in their money and were proud to have raised over $8000 for CanTeen Hawkes Bay. Awesome effort and an amazing night!!!! Thanks to everyone who gave so generously.

Shannon and Anita.

BC2010 Wellington Style Bandanna Challenge is over for another year and we’d like to thank all the members, local businesses, schools and community who helped support us. A special thanks to everyone involved with the “Man Wax”

fundraising event held on the 20th Oct. in conjunction with New World Thorndon, ZM radio and Elite Beauty School. CanTeen Supporter and Lion’s rugby player Michael Hobbs, local businessmen, fire & policemen all got sponsored donations to get a half leg wax!

JOLT Challenge- Mind Warriors A huge thanks to Mind Warriors for their generous donation of a Jolt Challenge course for Wellington. The 9 week self development course was completed by 13 lucky members and has been an amazing and eye opening experience for us all. The course goal was to help develop your health, wealth and relationship, known as the big 3. It was an amazing course which everyone got a lot out of and will be something that we can use in our daily lives. Thank you to Wade Jackson and Steve Hill for the course and to Geoff our awesome Wellington Trainer. This course will help the futures of all the members that attended it for a long time to come.

Shannon Ryan.

Farewell Eddie- Wellington MLC “I’ve really enjoyed my time, albeit brief, with CanTeen and look forward to helping out with the Wellington tribe when I can through volunteering”.

Eddie Rakanui

Food Stuffs Wellington - Golf Day On a warm hot sunny day we all headed up to Waikanae Beach Golf Park for the Foodstuffs Wellington Golf Day. Our task was to lend a hand and cook Tegal Chicken Bacon Sandwiches and Hellers Sausages on the barbeque at two spots on course. We had a great time talking to the golfers and enjoyed cooking and listening to some tunes.

Afterwards there was a prize giving where our signed bandannas were auctioned off. We also had the opportunity to educate all participants about CanTeen and each of us (members) shared why we are part of CanTeen and how CanTeen has helped support us through our cancer journey. Mentioning how important it was to be surrounded by other young people who had gone through the same experiences.

We were excited about speaking just before the ex-All Black legends - Christian Cullen and Norm Hewitt. It was a great day and we look forward to helping out again next year!

Thanks from members Amy Stewart, Alexander O’Connor & Alistair Van Boom with volunteer Anna Finlayson and staff member Hanna Pickersgill.

Street Appeal A HUGE thank you to all the local CanTeen Members, friends, families, awesome Volunteers & fantastic corporations who joined forces to hit the streets of Wellington CBD on Friday 22nd Oct for our Street Appeal.

CanTeen’s Evil Santa Hunt! We held the CanTeen Wellington 2010 Christmas party down at Frank Kitts Park. We had a wide turnout of around 40ish people (Members with their families). Our new Staff Member Mieke came along for the day to see what she was getting herself into. We had an awesome day, helped by the wonderful weather, following the clues to find the 5 hidden Evil Santas (Thanks Volunteers!). After finding an Evil Santa we had challenges to complete; from ‘CanTeen’s Next top model’ photo shot, and ‘dry weet-bix eating’, to ‘CanTeen t-shirt race relay’ (we all got ice-cream for this one). Then we ended with the CanTeen favorite Christmas present game. Big thanks to all who helped and donated stuff, it was a great day indeed.

Alexander O’Connor (Patient Member &

Wellington Committee President)

Fishing Charter- Member’s Ahoy!On a calm Wellington non windy day, Wellington CanTeeners headed down to Eastbourne wharf to go fishing. We all jumped onto a large boat and went out to sea in 3 different locations (Ward Island, Sommes Island and Scorching Bay) to catch some fish. It was a great day despite the amount of fish that was caught :( many fish were slightly too small be to keep). We caught fish such a Jack Mackrels, Tarakihi and Blue Cod, some of the people were catching 2 fish at a time!! There was a good turnout and the nite was lots of fun. We chucked some sausages on the barbeque at dinner time, hung out and played with the dog that was on board. We also got to walk up to the second level of the boat to take a look.

Thanks Pete Lamb & Wellington Fishing Charters! Volunteers Richard, Marion & Ian – you guys rock!!

The head shave fundraiser that occurred in Blenheim as part of

Nelson/Marlborough’s Bandanna Challenge was

an amazing event where five Marlborough Girls College students shaved their heads

in support of CanTeen. A huge crowd was drawn to sponsor

and support the girls alongside live music awesome raffle prizes

and fantastic food. This event was

supported by local members Timo Bristow and Leanne Broadhurst who gave a heartwarming speech of appreciation to the girls. A whopping $6000 was raised in total from the head shave event thanks to donations and even a CanTeen cupcake stall - yum!! CanTeen Nelson/ Marlborough would like to thank the many wonderful people who came together and worked so hard to make this night such an awesome experience for us all!

Art Auction BC10 Over 60 pieces of gorgeous Art were donated for Canteen Nelson/Marlborough’s annual Art Auction as part of BC10. Together we raised $2,700 with another auction scheduled to occur in March 2011. This event would not have been possible without the generous support of the local artists who gave a piece of themselves and their amazing creativity in support of our local members.

Thank you so very much xxx

Tony’s head & leg shave Nelson CanTeen member Tony Bayards shaved his head in support of his brother Aaron and to raise money for his local Branch of CanTeen. As he raised over $2000 he, as promised shaved his legs too!! Well done Tony you are a star!! Thank you also for the awesome support from Unite Church, the teachers at Nayland College and King Salmon for making this fundraiser a huge success :)

We would also like to thank the Canterbury Community Trust for their generous grant of $9,000 which will go towards rent and member resources and also the Lion Foundation for their fantastic $5,000 grant for Summer Camp and rent.

Pres Report Hey Team,

I hope this finds you all well.

toP 5 haPPenings in CanteRbuRY / west Coast:1. September 4, 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake. The Christchurch CanTeen office was badly damaged (Lets just say there is now brilliant indoor/outdoor flow in our offices as the wall fell away from the rest of the house) A few members houses were effected but Everyone is OK. We have now moved into 52 Cashel Street until we know the fate of 20 Cashel Street.

2. Our Greyhounds, Jackpot Jackie and Ice Ice Amy. A guy called Michael has donated his half of winnings from these two dogs to CanTeen. During Cup Week they even named a race after us and Jackpot Jackie came 3rd in our race!

3. Pajama Party, for our monthly General Meeting we had a PJ Party where everyone wore their Pajamas and we played games from our Childhoods. We think this might turn into an annual event.

4. Canterbury Cricket has partnered up with CanTeen Canterbury / West Coast. We get to go to all their home games, help with ticket sales at the gate and then hang out with the Canterbury Wizards.

5. South Island Summer Camp, from 9-12 December, 56 members and 11 staff and volunteers met at Bridge Valley in Nelson for an amazing 4 days of Sun and Fun with a Movie Theme. Including a dress up night which featured Dorothy and her friends from the wizard of Oz, Charlie’s Angels, Pocahontas and even Shrek. It’s the first South Island Summer Camp since 2003 and was awesome!!

From all of us here in Canterbury, Have a wonderful Christmas break!

Have fun, eat too much and don’t get up to too much mischief!!

Rach :) (President)

A Day at the Races On the 11th of November some lucky members from the Canterbury / West Coast branch got the opportunity to watch and later meet the two greyhounds that race for CanTeen. Jackpot Jackie was awesome and came third in her race! The members got to meet Jackpot Jackie and Ice Ice Amy along with her owner and trainer after the race. Every time the dogs race and win, we get a half share of the money, awesome. Learning a bit more about the dogs was really interesting and it was amazing to see how speedy these dogs really are!

NBC 2010 What a crazy month October was. With the earthquake kicking us out of 20 Cashel Street and bandanna stock arriving any day, we were grateful to find a temporary home with the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation for a few weeks. It was only with the outstanding

help from our committee, volunteers, members and their families that NBC happened at all for us this year.

Although we lost about 3 weeks of planning, we managed to get Bandannas out to 160 businesses and have some very successful events throughout the campaign. Starting with our Street Appeal, 10 local businesses took over a corner each in central Christchurch.

Next was Zumba-Rama and a head shave, a day out with Dan Carter at Foodstuffs SI headquarters and finishing with our Mall Appeal. To all our fantastic supporters, wonderful volunteers and everyone that helped us along the way, a massive THANK YOU.

Cheers again Jason (MLC)

NZIS CanTeen Golf Day On Friday 8th October, Emily, James, Rachel and I were proudly representing CanTeen at a Charity Golf Day organised by the lovely team training in Event Management at NZ Institute of Sport. I had the pleasure of meeting and organising the day with the class and their tutor, Stuart Murray. Everyone was very enthusiastic and on the day, it was a stunning success! We had teams from Four Square (Foodstuffs) and a range of other businesses who got on board and either entered a team and/or sponsored a hole. We ran a gourmet BBQ as lunch for the players and Rachel spoke at the presentations that night at the conclusion of the event. We were over the moon to receive a cheque for over $4000 to go towards our South Island Summer camp costs. A HUGE thank you to Stuart and the team – you were amazing!

Koral (MSM)

Winter Camp In August we had our Winter Camp and my first camp as a staff member. I would like to say a big thanks to all the awesome members that came along and made it such a great weekend : ) Also a big shout out to Dave Wilson (Mt Hutt) Todd (O’Neill Rentals) Stephen & Monique (Mt Hutt Retreat) and as always our fantastic volunteers. If it wasn’t for these guys there would be no camps.

THANKS HEAPS EVERYONE!!

Jason (MLC)

HEAD SHAVE SUPERSTARS On Saturday 16th October, as part of our Zumba-Rama event, three amazing, awesome, inspirational young people shaved their heads for CanTeen, for YOU! Between them they raised more than $4000!! From all of us at CanTeen, you are Rock Stars.

Page 16: Summer 2010

Amy loses locks Hey I’m Amy and I shaved my head for CanTeen. I first started thinking about this when my friend Larissa (Otago CanTeen Member) did her speech on cancer. So I decided to help CanTeen and shave my head. I talked to her about it and first things first, ask the parents. My parents were ok with me doing it. Then I went and got sponsors, I had a goal of $200 but I had already raised that by the second day!!!

After asking everyone I know, I have raised about $800. We held the Shave Off at my Church so a lot of my friends came to see. It was the weirdest feeling getting my hair cut then shaved off. My head felt so much lighter. It was a lot of fun and I have raised money to help a very good cause and I would DEFINITELY do it again, when my hairs longer!!

:) Amy

Otago Community Trust CanTeen Otago would like to thank The Otago Community Trust for generously donating $2,000 towards our South Island Summer camp in Nelson. We headed away in the second week of December and had a great time catching up with members from all over the South Island and doing the awesome activities at Bridge Valley Adventure Camp. Thank you Otago Community Trust we had an awesome time!!!

Bandanna Challenge Friday 22 October was our Street Appeal day and the weather gods were on our side. Members, vollies and some key Cricket Otago Players assisted with Street Appeal and our Pres Chris Hakkaart, collected in his own unique style and donned a full body spandex jumpsuit. We’re still unsure if this was a hindrance or a help! Anyway, a great day was had by all and all the peeps in Dunedin got behind CanTeen and purchased bandannas, UV bracelets and threw their loose change into our collection buckets (which were getting heavier by the minute!). Previously, on the Thursday, vollies pushed the CanTeen banner in our rural areas in Oamaru & Balclutha. We love our vollies!

We had our share of head shaves as well, Balmacewen Intermediate pupils initiated a challenge to the school, to sell $1000 worth of bandannas so that eight teachers (including their Principal) would take part in a head shave at the school assembly (and one female teacher, who was prepared to have her hair cut short for the first time in her life!). Otago President Chris Hakkaart and Team Leader, Donna Helliwell came away feeling humbled by this experience and Chris took the opportunity to thank everyone for getting behind CanTeen and purchasing bandannas and UV bracelets.

Otago Uni student Kelsey Bradshaw raised over $700 for us and shaved her hair as did Amy, friend of member Larissa McKechie. It was also an extra bonus that these head shaves were preceded with some unseasonal high temperatures in Otago.

Finally, we finished Bandanna Challenge with a hot sizzle, where Bond & Bond invited us to fundraise over the weekend of 30 - 31 October outside their store, where members operated a sausage sizzle and received proceeds from their store takings over the weekend.

Thank you everyone Bandanna Challenge in Otago ROCKED!!

CanTeen Otago finished up the year with a fabulous Secret Santa/BBQ party. Special guests Warren Alcock (Manager of many awesome rugby players) and Ben Smith, former All Black and New Zealand 7s Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, came to celebrate a wonderful year with us at the offices. Ben spoke about his experiences with the All Blacks and the Commonwealth Games and even bought in his gold medal in to show us. Our Secret Santa was successful as always, after an interesting version

of pass the parcel everyone ended up with something interesting and wonderful presents. It was a fantastic end to the year and thank you to our special guests for coming in to celebrate with us.

Huge thanks to the Invercargill YMCA for

holding a ‘Spin A Thon’ event to raise funds for CanTeen

Southland. The ‘Spin A Thon’ involved 8 teams cycling

non-stop from 8am to 5pm. Two people rode 4 hours each!!!

CanTeen members Joeleen Abey, Louise Abey and Jo-Ellen O’Brien

joined in as a last minute support

‘team’ for the cyclists.

Mayor Tim Shadbolt made a personal appearance and made a donation to CanTeen.

Altogether the Spin A Thon raised a grand total of $2,464.00 and already another event is planned for 2011. Thank you everyone for making this a very successful event.

RADIOWORKS LAUNCH BC 2010Radioworks Foveaux FM came onboard to help Southland CanTeen Launch BC in Southland. They generously gifted us all the food for a BBQ as well as manning it

for us. During the day members sold bandannas and wristbands at the gate and an attempt at making ‘the longest bandanna clothesline’ was made. The line was 22 metres long which was a great effort considering it was a freezing cold Southland day!

On behalf of all our members, volunteers and staff thank you Radioworks for the tremendous help you gave CanTeen Southland especially the free air time and promotions!

SCHOOLS A BIG thanks to all the schools who held wacky hair days; Sausage Sizzles; and brought our wristbands. Louise Abey, Sam Small and Jo-Ellen O’Brien did a great job speaking at Te Anau Primary School about their experiences living with cancer and afterwards we spent a lovely afternoon beside the lake eating ice cream. YUM

MASTERCHEF 2010After weeks of lovely 2 course meals cooked by members who were competing in

CanTeen Southland’s very own Masterchef we finally have some winners!

Danielle and Lane won with the dessert they ‘created’ called Cream Puffs.

We are lucky to have the Rocks Café and Bar right next door and we were able

to have the head chef Tony come over and judge the entries. Thanks Tony for your help.

Ayla BlakeIt is with great sadness that we had to say goodbye to the bubbly and energetic Ayla Blake aka bro. Ayla known for her great smile, infectious laugh and engaging personality. Ayla over the years gave so much to CanTeen providing support to many members while also becoming the Vice President for the Auckland Branch and being involved in many of the media and pr campaigns CanTeen have run. Ayla will always share a special place in the hearts of everyone she came into contact with both members and staff alike.

We will miss you Ayla, Rest in Peace Gangster.

Our love to William,

Kerry and Evelyn.

Alex KilpinThought of you with love today, but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday and days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories and a picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake, with which I’ll never part. God has you in His keeping, I have you in my heart.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So, he put his arms around you & whispered “come with me”. With tearful eyes I watched, and saw you pass away. Although I love you dearly, I could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me, He only....takes the BEST.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Our thoughts and love go out to Ken, Nora, Hanna and Caitlin Kilpin.

RIP Alex Kilpin

Rimoni Siafolau On the 6th of November CanTeen Auckland bid farewell to one of its special members Rimoni Siafolau. Rimoni attended many camps and activities and was a much loved member of CanTeen. We would like to extend our thoughts to Rimoni’s family who have also had a lot of input to CanTeen.

Rest in Peace brother.

Never a day goes by when we don’t think of you

We remember with joy and sadness the good times and the bad

You filled out lives with memories we shall always treasure

You leave a hole in lives that can never be replaced

There are no words that exist to explain how much we miss you

You will remain forever in our hearts and minds

Love always,

Mum, Desiree, Alicia, Peata and Esmay.

Maria SantosA soul taken too soon. An Individual who shined briqhter than the sun. Who was strong as a rock. My best friend, my Inspiration, my motivator. Maria & I were diagnosed around the same time at the end of January 2009. Since then we built a friendship like no other. From sharing hospital rooms to pushing each other on wheel chairs at the mall, gossip sessions in Outpatients, life will never be the same. Maria kept me in line, we encouraged each other that we could make it to the end. Maria Santos, I hate that your gone, but I’m also glad you are not in pain no more. God saw you were getting tired so he took you in his arms, I dedicate my battle with cancer to you . No matter what happens, know I went the long way just for you. Alexia Violet HaengaIn loving memory of Alexia Violet Haenga who paseed away on the 9th October 2010. Alexia was a member of CanTeen for 5 weeks before she lost her courageous battle with liver cancer, she was a beautiful and vibrant 17yr old who was surrounded by loving family through the hard times and she is dearly missed by family and friends.

Alexia

She fought so hard, the illness wild,

Till God spoke out “It’s time my child”

No longer bound by earthly things,

She’s now in Heaven sporting wings,

The hole she left so plain to see,

Missed by friends and family,

Remembered for her loving touch,

An angel who is loved so much.

From CanTeen Hawkes Bay.

Tony JenkinsPatient member Tony Jenkins (18yrs) passed away on 9

September this year.

Whilst he never had the opportunity to attend any National Programmes in the 12 months he was a CanTeen Otago member, Tony received support while on treatment in Dunedin Hospital and attended several Tuesday night Gatherings. Tony also joined us for some activities at Otago/Southland Divisional Winter Camp in August this year. He had a wicked sense of humour and embraced every aspect of life.

There are a number of options within the event from 150km solo rides to relay teams. The scenery is spectacular, the race organisation superb, the ‘Naki’ hospitality is the stuff of legends and the best thing is you get to hang out with other CanTeen members and supporters.

If you or your family like the idea of riding for CanTeen, please contact Vice President Guy Alexander as he’s love to hear from you. His contact details are 027 418 4973 or [email protected]

So get on your bike, put in some training and get set for the cycling time of your life this summer.
