Poage Legislative Library The Standing Committee Summer 2010 A Publication of the W. R. Poage Legislative Library Report #14 ACCESSIONS Friends of the library continue to deposit materials. In the past year, 30 individuals from eight states, nine Texas cities and Canada have donated items to the library. If you have items you would like to donate, just let us know. The following are examples of the types of materials donated. Bob Platt closed his bookstore in the Fort Worth Stockyards in February and gave all his remaining books to the library. About 2000 books are being shared between The Texas Collection, Moody Library and Poage. Jack Hightower also continues to send books to the library which are also being shared with other Baylor libraries. Ed Nichols, a friend of Bob Poage and Jack Hightower, has begun depositing his materials related to his years in the agricultural diplomatic service. LBJ EXHIBIT: TEXAN – POLITICIAN – PRESIDENT Opened in conjunction with the lecture, an exhibit about Lyndon Johnson features LBJ materials collected over the past 35 years by George Meyer of Georgetown, Texas. If you are in the Waco area, plan to stop and visit the exhibit. There is also an online exhibit at: www.flickr.com/photos/poagelibrary [Click on Slide Show.] SPRING LECTURE LBJ: ARCHITECT OF AMERICAN AMBITION The 2010 Poage Lecture was delivered on March 18 by Dr. Randall Woods, author of LBJ: Architect of American Ambition. Over 100 guests attended the event and the book signing afterwards. Fifty copies of the book were given away, which encouraged people to visit Poage Library. Photos: poagelibrary.winkflash.com WHAT’S NEW? Poage Library recently added three major items which give us more space for books, campaign posters and researchers. A nine-unit compact sliding filing system was installed on the lower level of Poage. There are five units along the wall and four sliding units in front with doors that slide up. The units allow room for extra storage of books, vertical files and supplies. To increase storage of oversize campaign materials, Poage received three map storage cases from The Texas Collection. Items stored here will include LBJ campaign posters from George Meyer and campaign posters from Bob Platt. The third major addition in May was two 6’ x 8’ x 3’ research carrels built by Trautschold Millwork here in Waco. One unit was given in memory of Ben’s parents, Paul and Louise Rogers, and the other in memory of his brother, Jonathan. Ben’s brothers and sisters along with other family and friends have made gifts through The Standing Committee for the carrels. These gifts honor the family’s life-long commitment to education. JACK HIGHTOWER BOOK FUND To honor Judge Jack Hightower, Poage Library has established the Jack Hightower Book Fund. The purpose of the fund is to continue the legacy of the last 65 years of collecting signatures of presidents and other political figures. Current gifts to the fund stand at $11,620. When the fund reaches $25,000, it can be converted into an endowment. If you would like to be a part of this legacy, you can send gifts to the Hightower Book Fund or designate your membership in the Standing Committee to the book fund. “I wanted to write to let you know that in all my research experiences I have never had such a productive and enjoyable stay at an archive before. The staff was terrific and The Baylor Collections of Political Materials, in my opinion, is one of the hidden gems of the archive world. Ever since I completed my work at Baylor, I have told many of my associates about my experience. Hopefully, they will travel to Waco to see for themselves the wonderful source material held at the Collections of Political Materials.“

RESEARCHER QUOTEMembership ReportMemberships in The Standing Committee totaled over $10,000 in the past year. Along with membership funds from the previous year, The Standing Committee was able to fund the 30th anniversary celebration, publish Fowler West’s book, purchase the LBJ materials and construct the research carrels.

Thanks to all of you who joined the committee and made these projects possible. It is through your continued support that the library is able to fund special events and projects.

In May, Ben attended the annual meeting of the Association of Centers for the Study of Congress, which met this year at the National Archives. While in Washington DC, Ben was also able to have lunch with Fowler West, chairman of The Standing Committee.Benna Vaughan and Mary Goolsby attended and
