dear Fellow alumni and Friends of the college:

as a proud member of the massachusetts college of Pharmacy class of 1962, this is a very special year. We are this year’s “golden graduates.”

last april, we celebrated reunion 2012. as you can see in photographs, my classmates have barely changed since graduation. our careers and our families have preserved us well. our college, on the other hand, has undergone colossal change, especially in the last fifteen years, made possible by the support of more than 20,000 alumni and friends.

in 1962, the george robert White Building was the college. now, thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends including thomas Borysek, Joseph and Frances Brant, Henrietta deBenedictis, J. richard Fennell, richard griffin, theodore iorio, david and marilyn maher and ronald matricaria, our three campuses thrive with academic and student centers that bear these donors’ names.

in 1962, we studied in one library, took chemistry in one lab and sat in few lecture halls. now, thanks to gifts from alumni and friends, our college boasts multiple libraries, chemistry laboratories and lecture halls. names such as albert, arnow, Blais, Bucher, Fournier, Fuller, gosselin, laham, monahan, reed, rombult, Johnson, Wilkins and others grace the entrances to advanced centers for student learning.

in 1962, we shared the college with 300 other pharmacy students. now, nearly 6,000 students are enrolled on three campuses. thanks in part to annual Fund gifts which are used for many purposes, and which set a record of more than $1 million this past fiscal year, mcPHS is able to keep student tuition comparable to, or even lower than tuition of most private liberal arts colleges.

indeed, the illustrious members of the class of 1962 are as energetic and youthful as ever. But, even they can’t match the vitality, vigor and promise of our beloved 190-year old mcPHS. thanks to support of alumni and friends, we’re really just getting started.

What’s New?

mentor-a-cardinal, a career diScovery and exploration program developed by alumni relations in conjunction with the center for Professional career development, gives mcPHS students the opportunity to learn from alumni mentors about health care career options, enhance their interpersonal skills and hone resume, cover letter and interviewing skills.

a four-month pilot program began for 25 students, representing many academic disciplines, with on-campus meetings with mentors, followed by several off-campus experiences which frequently included job-shadowing. Some students landed paid employment or internships. the next mentor-a-cardinal program will take place during the fall semester. alumni who would like to serve as mentors may contact Sara gaudette at sara.gaudette@mcphs.edu or 617.732.2785.

tHe mcPHS alumni induStry mentors (aim) program, organized by the center for Professional career development and alumni relations, hosted the first “leaders in Health care industry” panel discussion on march 20. more than seventy Boston campus students attended.

Five alumni panelists represented a range of health care careers in consulting, sales, research and development, operations and regulatory affairs. the panel included cecilia Schott ’90 ’93, executive Business development director of astraZeneca, cristina i. csimma ’84,

on aPril 4, nearly 180 gueStS attended tHe annual Scholarship recognition dinner. the event unites award winning students with donors who provided more than 240 scholarship awards during the 2011 - 2012 academic year, worth more than $325,000.

thank you for making this year’s scholarship program such a great success.”

mr. cocchi stated, “the motivation that scholarship awards deliver is incalculable. this is why we are scholarship fund donors.” mr. almeida thanked the donors who “without even meeting us until this evening chose to believe in us and invest in our success.” He closed his remarks with a vow, on behalf of all students, to pay forward the support that they received, and when able, “to invest in student success.”

the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010, leveling thousands of buildings, killing more than 220,000 people and leaving millions

destitute, sent virtual shockwaves around the world to places as unlikely as Fergus Falls, minnesota. that’s where annie Berger mPaS ’11 and her father, lonnie W. Berger, m.d. reside. “my father and i knew that this was an opportunity that we needed to take as father and daughter,” says Berger.

as members of a 22-person team, the Bergers traveled to Haiti last February to fulfill their dream of completing a medical mission together. the team delivered medicines, medical supplies and charitable funds, and then spent ten days helping to construct a new medical clinic and assisting patients at an older medical facility.

tragedy struck twice. a small child died in annie Berger’s arms and a member of the mission team perished after falling from a roof. the team dedicated the mission to the team member’s memory. “Haitians had become so used to suffering, it was amazing to see them grieve for us,” Berger says. “that was the most valuable lesson – we are all in this together.”

Walk down Salem Street in Boston’s north end, and you’ll probably see

carla gomes dH ’81. the beloved, ubiquitous owner of antico Forno and terramia restaurants, at which mcPHS students and their families receive 10% discounts, incessantly shuttles between the two establishments whose employees are as close as family. in the north end, family comes first. no one knows that better than gomes.

gomes’s son david, a 21-year old Pre-med mcPHS student, was diagnosed with type i diabetes on his first birthday. gomes says that david was somewhat fortunate to receive

an early diagnosis. yet, living with diabetes poses major challenges. “diabetes is always with you…it’s a consideration in each move you make, every day,” gomes says.

last may, Joslin diabetes center honored gomes at Symphony Hall for her tireless diabetes research and diabetes care fundraising efforts that have yielded more than $150,000 since 2003. Proceeds from the annual cityFeast at antico Forno are directed to Joslin’s High Hopes Fund. “i want to raise as much money as possible for High Hopes so that one day david and millions like him will be free from diabetes and its complications.”

if you drive past the building at the corner of green and Plymouth streets in Worcester, mass. and don’t think very

much of it, you’re forgiven. you probably would have no idea that you would find daniel apelian Pharmd ’05 serving thousands of patients at allcare Pharmacy.

apelian opened allcare in october 2008 as an independent, full-service, retail pharmacy specializing in Hiv/aidS and other specialty medications for Hepatitis c and other chronic illnesses. located on the property of aidS Project Worcester (aPW), allcare combines the medication-management policy of long-term care facilities with closed-door pharmacy and extensive mail-order services. it is the only such pharmacy in central massachusetts.

How did a pharmacist working for a retail chain wind up opening this one-of-a-kind business in Worcester?

apelian traces the idea for allcare back to the time at which he served an mcPHS clinical rotation at the Boston living center, new england’s largest community and resource center for people living with Hiv/aidS. that experience left him feeling that he “needed to do something more.” after meeting with aPW’s board and

administration, apelian decided that he had found his niche, and he relocated with his wife to Worcester.

“my passion has always been to help people; and i’ve always been entrepreneurial,” apelian says. allcare is an overstaffed “old fashioned pharmacy” focused on patient counseling, says apelian. “the infectious disease community requires attention to detail and understanding patients’ needs and cares.” allcare works closely with aPW. in fact, apelian notes that “every new employee begins by learning aPW’s services.”

the strategic location of allcare and aPW guarantees patient privacy and Hiv/aidS prescription medication availability. every morning, pharmacists review reports

for patients who may also visit aPW for weekly case management, food assistance and other services. “many patients have diabetes, hypertension and/or depression. We encourage pharmacists to counsel patients about their whole health. that leads to better care.”

“there isn’t one patient we don’t know by first name. Some people have been utilizing allcare since day one,” apelian says proudly. “We advocate for all of our patients.” allcare advocacy extends to community activities including participation on the World aidS day committee and hosting brown bag lunch discussions. apelian is involved in Worcester’s infectious disease health care community, and is vice president of the aPW board.

every day at allcare is a veritable mcPHS reunion. aren leighton BSPmm ’08, is the Business manager, and husband John leighton Pharmd ’10 manages operations. allcare’s full-time pharmacists are mcPHS alumni.

last october allcare moved into new accommodations, more than doubling the retail pharmacy, with additional space for mail-order and adherence services. “We built as close to a perfect pharmacy as possible,” apelian says. With an option to lease more space, the sky is the limit, including the potential for mcPHS student clinical rotations. But all growth must be manageable. “We worked hard to make sure patients were comfortable with the new space, apelian says. “We can’t forget our roots.”

more than 300 mcPHS alumni, friends and family attended reunion 2012, taking over the Boston marriott newton Hotel on Saturday evening, april 21. alumni spanning 71 years of graduating classes, from the classes of 1941 through 2012 journeyed from across the country (california) and around the world (italy) to reminisce and reconnect.

Festivities kicked off for the 50-year “golden grads” class of 1962 who gathered for an early private reception hosted by mcPHS President charles F. monahan Jr. ’62. catching up and memory sharing were only briefly interrupted when President monahan presented 50th golden diplomas to each ’62 alumnus. later, Forsyth graduates and hundreds of other alumni gathered for lively pre-dinner receptions in nearby meeting rooms.

the evening continued as guests took their seats for dinner in the grand Ballroom, with wine service compliments of President and mrs. monahan. after dinner, alumni association president Paul larochelle ’07 introduced President monahan for welcoming remarks and

identification of special alumni guests. marguerite Johnson ’61, vice President for development and chief of Staff reported that more than $107,000 in gifts had been made to the reunion class gift campaign. the gifts will help to fund several student-focused initiatives such as the center for Professional career development, enhanced student tutoring services, SurF (Summer undergraduate research Fellowship) program expansion and leadership development programs, among others.

as the remarks wound down, the dJ took over for classmates to dance the night away. many gathered for dignified, fun or just plain frivolous photo strips taken in the attention-grabbing photo booth, as others continued to share closely held memories. one alumnus exclaimed, “Wow, what a great time we all had Saturday night! We are not going to wait until the 45th or 50th to get together again. even my husband enjoyed himself!”

let’s hope that all alumni plan to see us again for reunion 2013 next april 20!

boston campus holds 144th commencementon may 11, more than 700 students received degrees at the 144th commencement of the mcPHS-Boston campus at the Seaport World trade center in Boston.

mcPHS President charles F. monahan Jr. ’62 presided over the ceremony at which dr. lynda m. young, President of the massachusetts medical Society, delivered the commencement address and also received an honorary degree. esther m. Wilkins ’39, visiting Professor of dental Hygiene and author of the authoritative textbook on dental hygiene practice was awarded the college medal. Stephen g. Kerr Phd, associate professor of medicinal chemistry, earned the trustee’s award for teaching excellence.

the student address was given by Pharmd graduate carlos Perez. Born in the dominican republic, Perez demonstrated outstanding, sustained commitment, as an mcPHS student, to community outreach in both Boston and lawrence, mass. He volunteered in local professional organizations such as the greater lawrence young Professionals network and lawrence ground Works, where he served as a mentor for inner-city, college bound high school students.

Just prior to commencement, Perez was awarded a research internship position with the national institute of neurological disorders and Stroke, at the national institutes of Health (niH).

10th annual worcester/ manchester commencementWith an assembly of 3,000 family members and friends in attendance, more than 300 students received doctor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Science and master of Science in nursing degrees at the 10th annual mcPHS-Worcester/manchester commencement exercises on may 13 at the dcu center in Worcester. President charles F. monahan Jr. ’62 presided over the ceremony in which graduates hailed from seven nations and 25 states.

W. Patrick Hughes, president and ceo of Fallon community Health Plan, who received an honorary

doctor of Science degree, delivered the commencement address. He urged new graduates as health care professionals to always “think, understand and act.” mr. Hughes counseled “to act always as if what you do matters…because believe me it does.”

Pharmacy graduate megan robillard and nursing graduate Jamie Powers delivered their remarks and reflections about their student experiences, as well as their career aspirations as health care professionals.

the 10th annual manchester campus commencementon december 17, 2011 mcPHS – manchester campus held its 10th annual commencement ceremony at the radisson Hotel manchester downtown. more than 150 nursing, Physician assistant Studies and dental Hygiene students from 25 states, as well as from albania, china and Japan, graduated during ceremonies attended by hundreds of family members and friends.

thomas raffio, president and ceo of northeast delta dental, delivered the commencement address and received a doctor of Science honorary degree for his distinguished leadership in new Hampshire’s health care system. Scott arrington (nursing) and Samuel gagnon (Physician assistant Studies) served as student speakers.

Joseph Brant ’51 of Stuart, Florida, for whom the academic and Student center on the manchester campus is named with his late wife Frances, also received an honorary degree.

Paul Joseph albert BSP ’58, a native of maine, died at his home in malabar, Florida on october 12, 2011. Paul received his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree after earning a Bachelor of Science degree from St. michael’s college of colchester, vermont.

For nearly 50 years, Paul J. albert served residents of maine as

manager, and later the owner of a chain of pharmacies. He served as president of the maine Pharmacy association during the 1970s and worked from 1990 until retirement in 2005 as a pharmacist with Hannaford Bros. co. supermarkets. Paul enjoyed life to its fullest, whether skiing the mountains, sailing across the atlantic ocean or traveling around the world.

in commemoration of his generous philanthropic commitment, the chemistry suite on the mcPHS – Boston campus was named in Paul’s honor in 2010.

paul Joseph albert bsp ’58

m. christine (maloney) gosselin BSP ’44, mS ’53 of east greenwich, rhode island, formerly a long time resident of Wellesley, massachusetts, passed away on February 15. She was the widow of raymond gosselin BSP ’43 ii, mS ’48, dSc ’70 (Hon.) who served as President of mcP from 1972 until 1987. chris became the college’s first

female faculty member in 1953. She and her husband established a successful pharmaceutical marketing business and developed the national Prescription audit (nPa), as well as other pharmaceutical data products. She also served in leadership positions with state and national pharmaceutical associations. in commemoration of their devotion to mcPHS, in 2007 the President’s conference room on the mcPHS – Boston campus was named in honor of raymond and m. christine gosselin.
