But, the program is much more than just a basketball tournament. This year, the tournament brought together 156 students on 13 teams, from across different neighborhoods and states—along with parents, families, and other community members. In the end, over 300 people were involved including spectators, parents, and other supporters. Throughout the tournament, students heard lessons from EECM staff about resisting temptations of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other pressures in their lives like violence. The tournament referees also took time to talk with each of the teams about sportsmanship and healthy competition. This year, there were some new faces in the tournament. In order to give them a ‘jump start’ on basketball skills (and a leg up on the competition) Children & Youth Programs Director, Rev. Darnell Leonard decided to get some of our elementary students involved in the fun with a new component to EECM’s after-school program at Fulton Elementary: Basketball Boot Camp. Twice a week, after homework was completed and snacks were eaten, about half of the students in our Fulton program worked on basketball basics, as many of these students had never touched a basketball before. On the playground at Fulton, our kids worked on ball-handling, agility, and shooting drills. They had a great time, and didn’t realize that, while they were learning the sport of basketball, they were really learning strategy, confidence, responsibility, work ethic, trust, perseverance, and respect.

East End Cooperative Ministry

Each spring, EECM’s HOOP-IT-UP TOURNAMENT runs for three consecutive weeks during basketball season and includes clinics and a tournament for 4th through 12th grade students.

This spring, Abbie, an 8th grader at Shady Side Academy Middle School, approached EECM with a great idea. Her school librarian, Mrs. Ashworth, passed away and Abbie wanted to do something to honor her memory. Another teacher told Abbie about EECM and they both thought that EECM would be a great place to give donations because of Mrs.Ashworth’s strong faith and passion for helping others. Abbie decided to hold a book drive and to raise money with a ‘dress down day’ at school on Mrs. Ashworth’s birthday in April. Students could take a day off from their regular school uniforms by donating to EECM.

Abbie and her classmates at Shady Side Academy raised over $700 for EECM’s Children & Youth programs and donated so many adult and children’s books to EECM that we couldn’t count them all! Thanks to her hard work, folks in our Shelter, Drop-in Center, and other housing programs will have some new reading material to borrow, share and keep, and our children and youth program staff will have even more great books to share with our students.

Council of Congregations Spotlight: Waverly Presbyterian Church

Waverly Presbyterian Church began simply as a Sunday School in a home near Regent Square. Soon, it became apparent that a church was needed in the community, and with the generosity of George and Mary Peebles, a small chapel was built in Waverly Lane in 1882—Waverly’s first home. In 1897, the congregation moved to its second home at Waverly and Peebles Avenues. But by the 1920s, the congregation had grown and required a more accommodating space, and a new building was planned at the corner of Forbes and Braddock Avenues, where the church stands today. The vision of Waverly Presbyterian comes from Hebrews 13:1-2: “Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers. For by doing so, some have entertained angels unawares.” The members continue to live out that vision through joyful worship, ongoing spiritual education and study, and making God’s love real.

Several years ago, Waverly found itself struggling to keep the doors open with only about 25 people attending regular services. In preparing the annual budget, the session took a leap of faith and designated 5% of the budget for community outreach, knowing very well that the church couldn’t afford the expense.

Answering the call to serve others and thinking in terms of abundance rather than need, Waverly turned to helping the community and in turn helped itself. Today, Waverly has about 100 people on most Sundays, and more than 12% of the annual budget is dedicated to outreach, locally and across the globe. Waverly has been a faithful part of EECM’s Council of Congregations, and regularly prepares and serves the evening meal in our Emergency Men’s Shelter. Other outreach projects that Waverly undertakes include youth and adult mission trips around the United States and the world, and work with many local groups in Pittsburgh’s East End.

If you’ve been in the neighborhood of Penn Circle North in the last few weeks, you may have noticed a few new things have appeared. Things like a contractor’s trailer and some new fencing. All sure signs of construction! We are in the home stretch and the ‘big dig’ should begin any minute now.

Keep watching as the construction begins. We will keep you updated every step of the way until Community House is ready and open for you and our whole community to use and enjoy!
