MESSAGE FROM THE BOARDMESSAGE FROM THE BOARDDear All,

It is always extremely difficult to condense in a few lines all of my thoughts regarding the events, success-ful operations and developments that have taken place during the last year, however I will try.2011 has been a difficult year for the majority of International companies especially those with theirheadquarters based in Europe and Fagioli like the others have had to face the same problems. The strangething is that probably for the ?rst time in history it has been clear to all of the world’s industrial communitythat you can implement innovative ideas, work harder and enforce more stringent quality and safetyprocedures all based on professionalism which you have built up after years of experience, butunfortunately it seems that it is not enough, it just needs someone to decide that the economy of somecountries is no longer considered “strong”, compared to the new “special rules of the day”, and that all thehard work done becomes almost useless and from a @orid position you are struggling to survive.

I am somebody coming from a work background where the value of the creative ideas were transferred fromthe engineering to the fabrication and then onto the ?nal erection of a petrochemical plant, an

offshore platform or a power plant and I ?nd it difficult to accept that enumerative smart ideas, billions ofman hours worked are completely blotted out as a result of ?nancial speculation.Anyhow this is the new scenario and we have to adapt and cope with it, expanding our presence in theworld, especially in those countries where there is a big potential for development, changing our skin likea chameleon and investing in new ideas in order to move the value of the money from a “physical asset” toa “not tangible asset”.

It is inside the difference between hardware and software the research for the best selling price and not ininvestments related to huge equipment just with the aim of being the ?rst with more powerful equipment:The Egyptians taught us a lesson in the pyramids!

Coming back to the new world, Fagioli is expanding very quickly in several countries and despite the factthe overall economic climate has been very difficult in the last passed year, we have obtained exceptionalresults in India where several Projects have been successfully secured and performed, Singapore where a20.000 ton deck has been lifted establishing a new record, Algeria where on a turn-key basis a big LNGPlant has been performed thanks to implementing and ful?lling all of of the principles laid out in our Mis-sion statement, Brazil is another example where the local J/V is hard at work in the power and petrochemical sec-tors.

Thankfully for this current year and next one we are more or less fully booked with new projects in Thailandand Australia in the LNG sectors, UAE in the Petrochemical, India and Brazil where the Powers Plants aregrowing like mush-rooms and in Suriname where an extremely interesting Project will see Fagioli involved

in the delivery of all materials as well as the ?nal installation the completed modules and heavy items again incomplete compliance with our Mission credo.

Another concept that I want to share with all of you is that I have noted that all of the new comers to ourcompany have immediately become an integral part our team and that from their ?rst steps they showthemselves as 100% Fagioli , this is a great stone on have to base our future, working for Fagiolimeans being married to its values!

I also take this opportunity to thank Marcello, Rudy and all the other professors who have recently left thecompany for their invaluable contributions that they have given over many years to Fagioli…..we are all

proud of being your school-boys!

And now we have just to continue and to go ahead as always have done convinced of our capacity andcapabilities... in whole Safety!

8 HEAVY LIFTING

The construction of a so called “airrights” building in London, England, posed th main constructor some inter-estng problems.Replacing a redundant office buildingwitha new building over a living oper-ational mainline railay station and 100year old London underground tunnelswas a dauting task. The problem was how those cantilever8oors could be constructude withoutcausing obstructions to the station orgeneral road and pedestrian traffic inthe area. Because the central corewould be the 7rst part of the buildingto near partial completion it was de-cided that the 8oors would be sup-ported during the construction stageon strand jacks 7xed to the strongpoints of the central core at rooflevel and to the outer edge beam ofeach cantilever at 1st 8oor level.

HEAVY LIFTING 9

To complicate matters the building was builtalong the lines of a balanced cantilever andwould only accept an out of balance equiva-lent to that of a single Joor. To this end, Fagi-oli supplied strand jacks, electric poweredHPU’s and a computerised control system suf-Icient to operate all jacks on both cantilevers.Because of jack loadings, the 2no end jackson each of the cantilevers needed to beL450’s and the jacks in between needed to beL180’s. Each jack however would be sub-jected to different loads throughout the con-struction phase. A total of twenty L180s andfour L450 jacks each with their own powerpacks were provided. A construction raft wasbuilt beneath the Irst Joor level on the Northand South elevations for the protection ofroad traffic and the general public. This al-lowed the strand jacks and also the Irst Joorlevel steelwork to be installed. Once com-pleted the strand cable lengths and loadswere adjusted to allow the cantilever edgebeams to take up their particular proIles.Erection of the second Joor steelwork ontemporary supports was then started. The“X”frames were also partially inserted.

Innovation is a word that well expresses the approach for any kind of the many activities per-formedbyFagioli.Thefollowingtwoprojectssharethemeaningofthisword.TheIrst jobwasthe replacement of a redundant office building with a new one in London. Fagioli providedstrand jacks and Jat jacks equipment to help the construction of this innovative building.Thesecond job, (see top right) was the result of a practical solution created by Fagioli engineeringdepartment for the installation of heavy items in Korea: a “Travelling Mega Gantry System”

Once the 2nd Joor level was completedthe strand jacks were adjusted again toallow for the deJection of the additionalsteelwork and to bring the edge beamsback to the correct proIle. Over the con-struction phase Fagioli returned to siteseveral times to transfer the additionalJoor loads to maintain the correct proIles.Once the cantilevers had been con-structued and the connection of the “X”frames completed, Fagioli transferred theloads from the jacking system into the per-manent steelwork.FLAT JACKS EQUIPMENTDuring the early stages of construction Fa-gioli positionedaseriesofHorizontal Trans-fusion Flat Jacks inJated on hydraulicoil between the central core and the sup-port pile caps. Fagioli made several ad-justements to the loads in these jacksduring the construction phase.Once the building neared constructioncompletion Fagioli returned to site totransfuse the Jat jacks from hydraulic oilto cementitous grout.

10 MO.S.E. PROJECT

The MO.S.E. (Experimental Electro-mechanical Module) is a project in-tended to safeguard the city ofVenice, and the lagoon from Joodswhich started in late 80ies by theMinistry of Infrastructure throughthe Venice Water Authority (the

Ministry's operational arm in thelagoon) and the concessionary, the Consorzio Venezia Nuova. The project is an integrateddefense system consisting of rowsof mobile gates able to isolate theVenetian Lagoon from the Adriatic

sea when the tide reaches abovean established level (110 cm) andup to a maximum of 3 m (9.8 ft).The aim of the MOSE project is tosolve the problem of high waterswhich have afflicted Venice andother towns and villages in the

lagoon since ancient times in au-tumn, winter and spring.MOSE consists of a system of re-tracting oscillating buoyancy Japgates: a total of 78 gates dividedinto four rows will be installed toprotect the three inlets.

The barriers will stay on theseabed until high tides andstorms are forecast. They will thenbe Joated, blocking the sea fromthe lagoon and effectively reduc-ing high water levels. Fagioliwas contracted by Mantovani to

perform the transport and instal-lation of huge cement structures(threshold caissons ) to be posi-tioned in the water on the bottomof the sea. Fagioli was contractedfor the positioning of 7 biggercaissons and two smaller ones.

Fagioli created a tailor madecatamaran composed of twobarges joint together with beamson top on which some strandjacks were positioned in order toexecute the lowering of the cais-sons into the water.

MO.S.E. PROJECT 11

After joining a certain height duringlowering operation, some “water cush-ions” (Bags) previously positioned intothe water were opened, “gently” takingthe load of the caisson before touchingthe ground. The bags were then de-flating allowing the arrangement ofthe caisson at its final positioning.

Under Mantovani (the builder and contrac-tor) and Fagioli responsibility the launchingoperations consisted of connecting the cais-sons to the catamaran in a tailor made basinwithin the lagoon with a so called “secondarymooring system”. Once the structure hadbeen connected, the catamaran was pushed

by tugboats and joined to a “primarymooring” system which allowed the “con-voy” to reach the designated area for thesinking of the caissons. Once in positionthe caisson was sunk by use of the strandjacks positioned on the catamaran com-bined with a delicate ballast operation.

SHIPYARD 17

The use of a large quantity of Spmt’s were mandatory to moveand haul structures weighing several thousands of tons. At theend of 2011 Fagioli utilized 228 axle lines Spmt’s to perform theload-out operation of a ship weighing 5670ton onto a barge , fora total convoy load of about 6632 ton (Picture above). The opera-tions were executed for the same contractors in a dockyard onthe Liguria sea (in the North-western Italian shoreline). Fagioliused 8 power packs units in order to haul the entire structure.Once the barge arrived at the specially made @oating dock, Fagi-oli performed the load-in operation. Fagioli were awarded the contract to remove anold stator and replace it with a new one. it’s not the

Crst time that Fagioli have been called on to face an oper-ation like this one considering the numerous obstacles tooverpass. The replacement of old stators in warehousescomprises a plethora of obstacles starting from the re-stricted area in which they are usually positioned.

Fagioli used 2 sets of hydraulic gantryCranes, 48 mts of rail for skidding operations, 2strand jacks, cross beam, a swivel, rollers and auxiliarymaterial to lift, skid with longitudinal translation, rotate andperform the replacement operation of the old stator andthe Cnal positioning of the new one. The stators weighted

Than the stator was lifted again and skidded on tracks

for 10 meters, rotated 90 degrees in order toallow the lowering into the hole. The stator was moved for 5meters more over the hole where it was lowered for about20 meters directly onto a trailer. The new generator was in-

stalled following the same procedures in reverse!

The steps taken for the replacement of the old stator : the item was lifted from its foundation and skiddedonto tracks for 15 meters and back onto foundations where some temporary supports had been previouslypositioned. The client removed some parts from the stator reducing the weight of the whole structure.

The Fagioli trailer was loaded in Europe onto the sameheavy lift vessel at the three engines, on the vessels arrivalat Takoradi, the Fagioli modular trailer was discharged andassembled in a record time to receive the three engines di-rectly from the vessel without any vessel stand by being ac-crued.The engines were then delivered to the land locked BurkinaFaso through the complete length of Ghana, a total distanceto site of 1200 kilometers. The challenging journey through Ghana was made evenmore difficult due to the terrible conditions of the road, infact it was necessary to organize the repairing of the roadwith graders & various mechanical vehicles which were work-ing literally meters in front of the convoy. In addition to thebad road conditions the convoy had to negotiate steepslopes where it was necessary to pull the trailer with threeprime movers. Due to the poor conditions of the bridges in Burkina Faso itwas necessary to position 30m long jump ramps (mobilizedfrom Italy ) over the bridges to ensure that the trailer whencrossing the bridge did not come into contact with it. Once arrived at site, the engines were installed onto founda-tions by means of Fagioli 400 ton capacity hydraulic gantrylifting system.

The engines were coupled with their generators and thenplaced into their base frame prior, prior to 4nal positioningthe base frame, the springs had to be attached and then theframe was jacked down into 4nal position. At the port ofTakoradi (Ghana) the 3 engines (weighing 214 ton each)were unloaded from a geared ship directly onto a 16 axlelines modular trailer and stored at the port storage area. Theengines were then reloaded onto the trailer and transportedup to its 4nal destination at Komsilga located near the cap-ital of Burkina Faso over a distance of approx. 1100 km. Thechallenging journey involved the crossing of Ghana coun-try and presented many difficulties and technical hitchessuch as: steep slopes, crossing bridges, high temperatureand crossing of areas with a high number of electrical ca-bles to be lifted or removed. In Burkina Faso the convoy wasforced to pass over an old bridge where it had been com-pulsory to position some iron ramps for a length of approx.30 m, in order to better distribute the relevant weight of theengines on the bridge plinths. Once arrived at site, the en-gines were installed onto foundations by means of Fagioli400 ton capacity hydraulic gantry lifting system. Several heavy transport activities were executed in the Northern part of Italy. The main difficulties, as usual, are the dimensions of the the items to be moved, considering the restrictions of Italian roads and the hundreds of road signs and electrical cables to be lifted, removed and repositioned. The continuous works on the road, change the geographical con7guration of the territory increasing the inevitable intervention in order to

allow the passage of the convoys.

Several transports started outfrom manufacturing area inBorgo S. Dalmazzo with 7naldestination Leghorn andSavona ports . In this case themain encumbrance camefrom the width of the items , 6meters which implied a highnumber of interventions onthe roads.

Another extremely challenging job Fagioli carried out was the transport of condensers from Leg-nano to Cremona (height 5.15) . A detailed and painstaking job of Fagioli survey and permits de-partment was the key for the execution of this job. As a matter of fact the condensers passed underthree bridges only for few centimeters clearance: the trailers hydraulic system allows the condenserto be lowered and raised at convenience.

At Civitavecchia port Fagioli Rome was awarded for the transport, load, unloadand positioning onto tracks of a 30 metres high machine, used to load/unloadcereals to/from ships with a pneumatic pump (weight 200t). Fagioli Rome co-ordinated the different departments (heavy transport, shipping ..)involved inthe project. The structure was lifted by Spmt’s (after the welding of beam sup-ports underneath), and transported for about 100 mts on the quay ready to beembarked onto group-owned H/L vessel m/v “Storm”. A ro-ro operation al-lowed the tall structure to be positioned onto the ship and subsequentlylashed and secured. The ballasting calculations and operations were performedby Fagioli engineering/shipping department. The vessel navigation entailed ashort trip, from one quay to another within the same port. HEAVY RAIL TRANSPORT 29

Last year Fagioli executed a trans-port of a very heavy generatorfrom Milan to Cremona (400 ton)in order to embark it onto ourbarge. The road transport wasquite complicated due to the in-evitable restrictions and theoverall dimensions of the convoy.

After one year Fagioli were againcontacted to complete the execu-tion the last leg of the long jour-ney of this generator: the heavyrail transport from Basel /uvialport to .nal destination, Leibstadt.

Another door-to-door project including road and rail activities was theone completed with the delivery to Basel of a 170 ton stator. The itemcame out from Vedelago to Cremona by road and arrived at Cremonariver port where Fagioli is proprietary of a big yard and a 600 ton .xedoverhead cranes. The gantry crane lifted and transshipped the stator fromthe trailers onto the rail wagons ready for the last leg of the transport.

Fagioli used a 14 and a 20 axle lines rail cars for the movement of two sta-tors weighing 176 ton each fromTerni (Central Italy) toVenice. The job

was accomplished on a single voyage as shown on the picture.

30 SINGAPORE - HEAVY TRANSPORT

During this last year, Fagioli Asia has beenvery active either with heavy lifting andheavy transport activities. The Singaporeoffice, supported also by an Italian col-league who spent the last couple of yearsbased there, were awarded with severalchallenging contracts starting with the

stunning Gumusut project in Malaysia(please see page 6-7) and continuingwith Senoko power plant, Papa Terraproject for the lifting side and two in-teresting heavy transport jobs executedwith Fagioli Asia Spmt’s. Let’s take alook at the activities!

Fagioli were contracted by one of the biggest localEpc contractors to perform the transport of twoWing Tanks (picture right) weighing 1500 ton each. The dimensions of each single piece were: 48meters long, 22 meters wide and 20 meters high. The Irst phase of the operations required thatFagioli positioned 64 Spmt’s axle lines underneaththe modules which were stocked within the clientsdry dock. The item was then hauled about 50meters in order to perform the assembling withthe platform. Fagioli executed the engineeringactivities covering all the operational phases. The Raffles dock gate project (top pict.) was com-missioned to Fagioli by the same client. Fagioli wasasked to move a 700 ton module with the followingdimensions: 62 meters long; 13 meters wide; 8 metershigh. The job was executed with 44 Spmt’s axlelines within the shipyard and stools were positionedin the critical points to support the entire structure(due to the peculiar conIguration of the structure).

HEAVY LIFTINGSenoko Power Plant in Singapore had un-dergone the 2nd phase of re‐poweringwhich involved the building of a newCombined Cycle Power Plant to replaceit’s aging oil Ired plant. Fagioli Asia wasawarded the contract to install 2 unitsof Gas Turbine (GT) and 2 units of GasTurbine Generator (GTG) onto it’s respective foundation using the 1400 se-ries gantry system. The GT weights 407ton while the GTG, 325 ton. This projectis one of the more challenging ones due tothe lack of space in the GT building andvery small tolerances. The GT is 14 me-tres long and needed to be moved intoposition with less than 10mm clearanceon each side.

The M594 project is part of the greaterPapa Terra 9eld development project off thecoast of Brazil. The topside (fabricatedin Singapore on top of a purpose buildbarge) is to be jacked up so that the tem-porary supports can be removed and re-placed by Deck Support Units (DSU).Fagioli was awarded the contract tosupply 22 units of reference 92 :at jacksto jack the 11.000 tons topside deck up by20mm to replace the supports. Each Jatjack was housed in a shear box to antic-ipate side load during jack up. Whilewelding the DSU, the whole topsidewas supported by hydraulic pressure inthe 22 Jat jacks. Due to the pulling forcecaused by welding, pressure at all thejacks were monitored and released periodically. During 2012, FagioliAsia completed the lifting of 8 thrusters(on the Right) for 2 different clients. TheIrst one was the anchorage (wet)

installation of 6 units of Rolls Roycethrusters for the heavy lift vessel, DB50.Each thruster, weighing at 35 tonne, waslifted using 3no of Fagioli L15 strand jacks. This project was particularly challengingdue to the fact that the thrusters mount-ing position had different orientationwith respect to the vessel centerline. The second thruster job involved the drylifting of 2 units of 35 tonne Flowservethrusters for the new Jack Up Heavy LiftVessel, Seafox 5. Each thruster was liftedusing 2 units of L50 strand jacks.

Lifting of Gas Turbineusing Fagioli Gantry Lift-ing System at Gujarat

For Palatana Gas Power Plant project, Fagioli proposed amodulartriangulartowerstructurealongwithcross-headbeams sup-ported with a hydraulic gantry for the lifting operation andmovement of the SteamTurbine and Generator simultaneously. The lifting system was composed of L300 Strand Jack posi-tionned over EZ 600 Gantry. After reaching a desired height, the items were skidded for approximately 15meters horizontallywith the help of the EZ Gantry self propelled system and thenplaced it over its respective foundation.

One of the most impressive jobs performed was the erection of a 300MT capacity Goliath Crane. The meticulous operation involved the activity of Skidding, Lifting & Placement of Main Girder weigh-ing 1800MT, Hinged Leg weighing 180MT and Fixed leg 300MT for one of the main Engineering Indiancontractors. The proposed erection methodology was developed in conjunction with the contractor. The chosen method and erection sequence was as follows: the 131 meter Span Main Girder weighing1800Twasmanufactured in one piece andwas skidded and placed in between the Girder Rail. After thisprocedure, Fagioli built up the Modular tower system on both sides. Once in position, the Girder washoisted at clear height of 80m using 2-L600 jacks, 4-L450 and then stabilized using L180 guying jacks. After the lifting ofMain girder the Fixed Legs &Hinged legweighing 300T & 180T respectively were placedbelowthemaingirder. The liftingof legswas thenachievedusingL300 jackson>xedside legand L180 jacksontheHinged leg side. The Girder was then lowered once both the Legs were arrested over the boggie Balancer.

Fagioli designed a four point 12.5 meters tallliftingunitwhichconsistsofPipecolumnsofvariablelength to enable modi>cation in height as re-quired, alongwith a 60meters Skid track systemcovering theentire lengthofGTG fromunloading tofoundation deck. The Turbine was unloadedfrom the trailer almost 20meters away from thefront deck and this was supposed to be liftedfrom the given position to its foundation whichwas almost 45 meters away. After clearing theTG height the entire assemblywas skidded overthe skid track using L15’s along the length of TGand >nally the Turbine was placed over thefoundation and bolted.

The operation shown in the picture above is the essence of what Fagioli USA is all about, assisting oil andequipment in short time frame. The sense of urgency left us a short time for planning and engineering, but we were up to the test andeven though it was a barge to barge transfer having both barges Ioating, making the ballasting critical. The 1225 Tons Stinger (93 meters x 24 meters x15 meters) is used on vessels for offshore pipe layneeded to be rolled onto a 200 foot barge due to Coast Guard regulations, that is where Fagioli came in andcrew. The operation was successfully completed in less than 8 hours, leaving the customer extremely satisHed.

The operations were performed by means of Fagioli Strand Jack Skidding System composed byNo. 8 L600 and HPU. This state of the art system was even more improved by the use of a double jack per strand system: every strand islinked to a pair of jacks one 6xed onbarge and the other one 6xed to thejacket base. The 2 jacks allow the con-tinuous skidding of the jacket even incase of problems occurred to one jackwithout stopping the operations.
