Dear Parents/Friends,

Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter. Memorial Mass

You will remember that last year at this time the school community was in shock

and mourning following the

sudden death of Ms Andrea Clarke. It was very fitting therefore that on 3rd July, we

took time out to remember Andrea in a special mass at which a memorial sculpture

was blessed that will stand as a lasting tribute to Ms Clarke in the sixth form area

of the school.

St John Fisher Feast Day Mass The mass led by Mgr Fisher and attended by

approximately 1000 staff and students was a great celebration for the school. Such events are vital as it is important for the

community to come together to worship and to celebrate our

distinctive identity. Confirmation Congratulations to those students who were confirmed recently at St Paulinus and in other parishes

outside the Heavy Woollen Deanery. We are very proud of these young adults.

Educational Visits/Pilgrimages A group of students from Year 10 and Year 12 have journeyed to Lourdes as part of the Dioc-

esan pilgrimage. Another group of students and staff are visiting Auschwitz as I write for

what is sure to be a life changing ex-

perience for them. Year 8 students have recently

enjoyed an educational visit to Paris. The recent Year 7 outward

bounds camp in

Dalguise Scotland and the Year 9 trip to the Ardeche were great successes.

A number of one-day educational visits have been approved

and are about to take place, a full calendar has been prepared for next

year.

Thanks to parents for your support for this important aspect of our children’s education.

requests in term time will not normally be granted as

authorised absence. This is due to the adverse effect it has on pupils’ education. One measure by which schools are

Holy Spirit Centenary Appeal 1914 - 2014

We are now just a year away from our

centenary mass – Monday

2nd June 2014 – and to date have raised £47,000 of

our £100,000 target to cover repair work and

redecoration of the church. Almost £6,000 of this has

come from matched fund

raising from HSBC and Bibbys. Do you or any of your family/relatives work for companies

that operate this kind of initiative? To celebrate the centenary, a book will be published late

next year which will be a history of the Catholic Church and school

in Heckmondwike from 1871 to 2014.

There is still time for you to help by: Submitting church/school photos – the older the better (the

oldest so far is 1912)! Buying centenary Christmas cards - £3.50 for a pack of 10.

Donating 2nd class postage stamps for a major mail shot in January

2014. Pre-ordering a copy of the book – pay later.

Making a donation to the appeal to be acknowledged in the book.

Remembering your deceased family/friends in the book -

£5 per entry. E.g. Joe and Doris Smith.

“Do you remember the old school days?” Former pupils of St. Patrick’s, Darley Street are invited to come into school on Friday

28th June between 1:30-4:00 to see old school register and other

memorabilia.

Time

Time. We never have enough of it, and yet

we are happy to waste it. Sometimes it flies, sometimes it drags, but it never stays

still.

From the philosophers of Ancient Greece to modern theoretical

physicists, wise men and women have argued about the nature of time.

St Augustine won his spurs as a theologian by talking about – you guessed it - time.

The Jewish communities behind

both the Old and the New Testaments of the Bible had a very different idea of time

from others in the ancient world. While most others thought that time was cyclical

(for example, moving from a “golden age”

to baser metals, and eventually back to gold), the Bible looks on time as linear. It

moves from the past, through the present, to the future. Along this road, stretching

behind us and before us, are the milestones of God’s action, until “the ages are fulfilled”,

and Christ returns.

For a school, it is tempting to get lulled into the “cyclical” view of time. Year

follows year, term follows term; it all seems to run like a well-oiled carousel.

But it is so important to

remember that each year is different. Things have happened this year that have

happened in any other year, and will never happen again. We may have done similar

things to what we did last year, but we do

them as older, wiser people. For our students, there is a clear line of travel – a

journey of growth into a mature fulfilment of potential.

As we reach the end of another school year, let us give thanks for all that

has made this year different and special.

For those of us who will be returning in September, let us ask God for the grace to

make next year even better. - Fr. Hall

Reminders - Please make sure you have your name written inside your uniform and bag, incase it gets lost.

- Although the bag rack is handy, do not leave any belongings there for days on end. This is how they get lost.

- Please clear the bag rack before the holidays as anything that is left will be cleared.

Thank you.

Career Academy Graduation May 2013

It was a proud day for Sixth Form students from St John Fisher High School as they

went to their Career Academy Graduation ceremony at Leeds Town Hall on Thursday 9th May. The ceremony recognises the hard work and dedication that they have put into the

last two years and celebrates their success.

Our students (from left to right) with James McCreary Chief Executive of Career Academies UK are Bethany Frain, Sana Hussain, Tayba Azam, Holly West, Vicky Bates, Sian Ginnelly and Megan Ledger. They have

graduated in either Health and Social Care or Business. In order to graduate the students have completed an

internship of between four and six weeks, met regularly

with their mentors and attended workshops and various guru lectures. They have also had the opportunity to

visit various places of work to gain a better understanding of how they operate.

We would also like to thank our supporters who

made this a positive experience for these students. They are Sephie Collins and Katharine Storey of Disken & Co

Solicitors; Jonathan Hall from Penna; Zoe Mason from Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust; Claire Berry from Tesco; Danielle Farrell and Graham Driver from BDO; Tom White from Telereal Trillium’ Nancy Redhead

from Kirklees Gateway to Care and the Halifax. - H. Blanchfield, Sixth Form Study Supervisor

UCAS Launch

St John Fisher Sixth Formers have this week embraced the launch of UCAS.

This important journey started with the official UCAS launch assembly on Friday 7th June, which highlighted the opportunities available to all Year 12 students. To support the process, students

have been invited to attend a Higher Education Convention at Leeds Metropolitan University on

Wednesday 19th June which gives them the opportunity to grill the admission tutors to ensure they choose the correct university for their aspirational careers. In addition to this, students are

invited to attend an Open Day at one of the Russell Group Universities – Newcastle University, where a selection of informative but exciting subject talks including dentistry, law and

psychology are hosted. Sam Thornton, an ex- St John Fisher student who recently graduated from Newcastle University, delivered a session

on personal statement preparation on Friday

14th June 2013 to underpin student potential in maximising their competitiveness in securing their university offers. A Higher

Education Information Evening on Tuesday 25th June allowed parents/guardians the chance to find out more about how they

can support the students through this exciting time, with guest

speakers to enable a wealth of advice and information to prepare our Year 12’s for their future!

- Mrs A Fleetwood, Director of Study – Sixth Form

On Friday 5 July, 70 students in Year 13 attended a Leavers' Dinner alongside

staff at Gomersal Park Hotel. Fundraising

Many thanks to the students and staff for all of the fundraising

efforts this year in memory of Ms. Clarke. At last count, we had

raised over £3000 for Forever

Angels, a charity close to Ms. Clarke’s heart.

A personal thanks from

Grace and the family to

everyone who

has contributed in

any way.

Health Awareness Day Review “Last month we took part in Health

Awareness Day. We were off timetable all day and got to take part in six workshops. Each one was

interesting in its own way. We particularly enjoyed

the workshops about drugs and alcohol and the role of the police because they were really

interesting and had fun activities to take part in. The speakers made it easy for us all to get

involved and discuss things with them. The Luke and Marcus Trust session was very powerful and

moving – three ladies told us their accounts of the

death of their sons from drug overdoses. Though the workshop was upsetting it really informed us

of the dangers and consequences of taking drugs. Overall Health Awareness Day was a fun and

engaging way to teach us how to take good care

of ourselves physically and mentally.”

Careers Award Presentation

In March this year Mr Steve Collins, Head of Services

(Kirklees), came into St John Fisher’s to award the school with the Quality Standard for Careers. The presentation

was made during a Year 10 assembly. Mr Collins gave a

short speech about the standards the school had to meet in order to win award.

Achieving the award is not an easy process and the school’s provision was rigorously assessed against 10

criteria that aim to demonstrate that the school provides its learners with a programme of careers education information

advice and guidance that is

in line with national stand-ards. The Standard

involves proving that the careers programme in

school includes effective

work related learning, engages parents/carers in

careers, has good resources and information,

strong leadership, effective training for staff and that

the careers programme is inclusive for all learners.

The award was presented to Aidan Maycock, on behalf of the school. Aidan is a Year 10 student who has

assisted Mrs Jones in the LRC with the management of the Careers information area. - A. Ballard, PSHCE

Entice Apprenticeships

Congratulations to Casey McGowan for

his successful appointment at Richard Allen, Dewsbury, as an apprentice in

Fabrication and Welding. Casey is the

first student from St John Fisher’s to be made an apprentice from the Entice Pro-

ject and Casey performed really well in a very competitive field against many different applicants.

Good luck to any other students waiting to hear how they have done in applying for apprenticeships .

Textiles and Design Club.

Their work based on a joint

soft sculpture, Tea Party, was exhibited in The

Pack Horse Gallery in Huddersfield. The Lord

Mayor opened the show which was very well

attended over the weekend. The manager of

the Pack Horse Gallery reported back that our

display was highly commended by members of

the public and the visiting committee. Well

done to all those students involved with the

project.

A Bumper Year for Readathon. Getting young people engaged in reading for pleasure is not

always easy, especially with all the other distractions available to them in today’s world. That’s why we at St. John Fisher run the Readathon;

the UK’s sponsored reading event. Getting pupils actively engaged in

reading for pleasure while improving their literacy skills. As well as rising to the challenge to read more books, pupils are

currently raising hundreds of pounds for CLIC Sargent and the Roald Dahl Foundation who do so much to support seriously ill children and

their families. The Readathon is creating a real ‘buzz’ about books in the

school and the money is really rolling in! Year 7 students have so far

raised over £500 and the money is still coming… A fantastic achievement! Well done!

Beth Shalom 2013 “We visited the Holocaust Centre ‘Beth Shalom’ to learn more about the treatment of the Jews in Nazi Germany. In the peace gardens there was a place were you could lay a stone in memory of the children who died during

the Holocaust. The guides of Beth Shalom are trying to get one stone for every child who died. That would be a massive 1,500,000 stones. At the moment they have around 300,000.

We also spoke to Susi, a lady who escaped the Holocaust by travelling to England on the ‘Kinder Transport’

when she was 3 years old. She told us about her time in Nazi Germany, how she lived in an orphanage and was brought over to England with her twin sister.

The trip to Beth Shalom was emotional as well as informative. We learnt a lot about what really went on during the Holocaust through a first hand account. I really enjoyed the trip and would recommend it to

others.” Ben Hawkins, Year 9. (This History/RE trip was ran by M. Mollicone and M. burns)

Mission Active The North Kirklees School Sport Partnership’s mission active took place in

Huddersfield this week. The annual event for Year 4 pupils included 24 schools this week and involved

over 1100 pupils across the partnership. The event

gave pupils an opportunity to participate and compete across 8 different sports as well as

receiving coaching tips and guidance. The activities covered Sports Hall Athletics, Dance, SAQ (speed, agility and quickness) and track events,

Football, Rugby, Tri Golf, Cricket and a taster of Paralympic Sports. Our leaders delivered 4 sessions throughout the day working in

groups to coach the different activities. Each group worked with

approximately 30 year 4 pupils at a time. The groups were a mixture of boys and girls with a range of sporting abilities; which really tested our leaders

ability to provide tasks where all pupils were challenged but could succeed. The event was a huge success and a lot of the plaudits need to go to our

fantastic 6th Form leaders. The coaching and leadership for the whole week

was provided by our 6th form, including A-Level PE and Btec Sport students delivering alongside qualified coaches and teachers. The quality of coaching

and the level of enthusiasm was exceptional from our young leaders. They ensured the week was a hugely enjoyable experience for all the pupils in-

volved. Feedback from staff and pupils has highlighted how good a job our students did. It’s great to hear such positive feedback about our students

and to have seen them in action, doing such a good job. Huge thanks and

congratulations go to all our 6th Form Leaders. Well done! - C. Egan

Catholic Cup

A year 7 team consisting of 8 boys

and 8 girls recently entered the catholic Cup. The competition,

now in its 3rd year brings all the

catholic schools from the diocese together to compete in a number

of different sporting events. The morning was divided into boys

football and girls netball. Both

teams came together in the afternoon to compete in a tug of

war tournament and a team obstacle course including cargo

nets and an inflatable section of the course. The pupils were a

credit to the school coming 4th in

the competition overall.

Year 9 Royal Armouries Trip “On Thursday 18thApril, 56 year 9 pupils went to visit the Royal Armouries on a History trip. It was a good experience. We learnt a lot about WWI, which we are currently studying. We were

split into two groups and had a range of activities to do. We learnt how they dressed, then had a competition in pairs to see which group was able to do the uniform correctly. We also learnt how

to march as WWI soldiers would have. We were taught the correct way to hold and throw a

grenade from the trenches. In the second activity we got to hold guns, swords and other artefacts used in the war. We were also able to try on clothes that the Germans, British and

French soldiers used during the war. After lunch we all got to go in our own groups with a teacher, we

visited exhibits such as the hunting rooms and the Medieval exhibit. It was fun because we got to see how history has changed, how weapons and clothes have developed. We also got

to see an exhibition where two Medieval knights explained their armour to us, explaining how

to put it on and how it protected them. They fought a battle and explained what moves they were making and how their opponent would block them. It was really fun watching them

fight. We all enjoyed the day at the Royal Armouries. It was really good to learn about WWI in an

interesting and different way.

- Louis Jelves and Hannah Hussain

“When asked to do marching drills and grenade drills…they demonstrated excellent behaviour skills, conducting themselves as young adults in an exemplary way. They were the best

students, of that age group, that I’ve ever taught and it was the students attitude and demeanour that made it a real pleasure to teach them.”

Andrew Deane, Visitor Experience Coach, Royal Armouries

Spellathon Wish us luck for the second annual Spellathon run by Kirklees' More Able Network (Thursday

11th July at Huddersfield University) We came 4th last year and have been rehearsing wildly!

Personal Development Day with the British Army

A group of 21 students enjoyed a full day of activities led by the British Army to develop leadership skills, through a

series of command tasks. This required some physical agility

but it soon became apparent that brute force would not enable them to complete the tasks and more mental/problem solving

skills, excellent communication and teamwork were necessary. A great day had by all.

‘Overall the day was very enjoyable and is a great way to im-

prove important skills.’ Jordan Ellis ‘All in all, it was a day of fun and team building, which I do believe that we improved.. even though we came

second’ Jacob Crowther ‘I thought that the Army day was a very useful activity to develop teamwork. It provided important knowledge and

sport at St John Fishers. We have hosted a Year 5 and 6 Kwik Cricket festival for our feeder schools with the addition of 3

other primary schools from the local area. Holy Spirit and St

Joseph’s won their groups and met in the final with Holy Spirit winning the competition overall.

The key stage 2 cross country saw a large amount of runners from each of our feeder schools competing in early June. Boys

and girls from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 tested their stamina and determination over a challenging course. The boys year 3 and

4 race was won by St Patrick’s, 2nd

St Joseph’s, 3rd St Paulinus. Girls year 3 and 4 was won by St Joseph’s, 2nd St Patrick’s, 3rd St Paulinus. The boys year 5

and 6 race saw 1st, 2nd and 3rd all taken by St Patrick’s and the girls year 5 and 6 race was won by St Joseph’s, 2nd St

Patrick’s and 3rd St Joseph’s.

The year 5 and 6 rounders involved mixed teams of boys and girls and was a great display of team work, encouragement as

well as skill. St Patrick’s won the competition overall, closely followed by St Mary’s, St Paulinus finished 3rd and St Joseph’s

a spirited 4th. The Key Stage 1 and 2 cross Country event took place just last

week with year 1 and 2 boys and girls competing. Some year 1

Gifted and Talented/More Able Astronomy Masterclass

I took three year 8 pupils; Molly Reid,

Keeley Honeybell

and Noah Hawkins to an Astronomy

Master class at Mirfield Free

Grammar School on Friday the 5th of July. There were several schools represented

at this event including Salendine Nook, Colne

Valley , Holmfirth High School and Mirfield Free Grammar School. The activity was to build a

motorised moon buggy, test it by measuring how far it travelled on the ground and if it could

remain in one piece when dropped from a

height. The pupils had to present their findings

to the rest of the groups. They were marked on their overall performance in team working and

producing a successful outcome. Holmfirth were the overall winners so well done to them!

St John Fisher’s team came an

impressive third overall. This was a fantastic achievement by our Year 8 team as the rest of

the pupils were all Year 9! They also received a certificate for their

hard work and are looking forward to going

back next year to hopefully win the trophy! - Mrs Gavaghan Gifted and Talented Co-Ordinator.

National School Sport Week “Inspiring more young people to do more sport 24-28 June 2013 “ Since 2009, nearly 9 million pupils and 84% of schools in Britain have taken part in Lloyds

TSB National School Sport Week. In 2012 the Olympic and Paralympic Games came to the UK and we had an amazing time! Schools took part, inspiring young people through the

Torch Relay, staging their own Games during National School Sport Week and welcoming

the world’s athletes and cultures on London 2012 World Sport Day As a result of National School Sport Week, St John Fisher PE department decided to give

pupils more options in their PE lessons. Classes were collapsed for the week and pupils put into 4 different teams. Each team had to decide on their squad for 4 different sporting events; athletics, handball, rounders and table

tennis. The response was really positive with some great competitions. Pupils enjoyed playing in mixed ability and gender groups, as well as trying some new activities.

Dalguise

Sixty Year 7 pupils and 7 worn out and weathered teachers, have recently returned

from a fun filled week in Dalguise, Scotland. The annual trip is an action packed activity week in the great outdoors just outside of Perthshire. Pupils had the chance to gain new experiences

including ‘the giant swing’, zip wires, climbing, abseiling, raft building, archery and much more with specialist instructors. The trip gave pupils in year 7 a chance to get to know each other

outside of the classroom and to challenge themselves by taking them out of their comfort zone.

The pupils were a credit to our school. Throughout the week pupils surprised themselves with their bravery; climbing higher

than they ever thought they could, pushing themselves in a range of different feats. The trip also showed how supportive of each other the pupils at St John Fishers can be, with screams

and shouts of encouragement and congratulations throughout the week. Evening activities included camp fire songs and games with pupils in full voice. Voices which seemed to desert

some pupils by the end of the week. A great week was had by all. Big

congratulations should go to all the pupils who took part for their ef-fort, behaviour and

courage to push themselves. Well done.

Pupil Comments:

“I had an amazing time and everyone had lots of fun. My roommates enjoyed it too and every day was so exciting! I especially liked the

giant swing which I went on with my friend Megan. I also liked the zip wire and raft building. I would definitely go again.” Cara Turner “Dalguise was a fantastic trip! I made loads of new friends, and got to know people I wasn’t

that close with before. I overcame my fear of heights- I found the catwalk very challenging; I had to climb a tree, pull myself up on to a beam and walk across it. I didn’t want to let go

but with the encouragement of my group and teachers I made it to the middle to abseil down” Laura Bowler “Dalguise was a great place to go. I had a wonderful time, made new friends and conquered my fears. My favourite things have got to be abseiling and canoeing, particularly when we

could swim across the lake.” Amy Wood

“I really liked the raft building. We had to make our own raft. It was really funny because we all kept falling in.” Lewis Teale

“I really enjoyed all the activities but climbing was probably my favourite.” Tom Haley I really enjoyed Dalguise. My favourite thing was canoeing because we could swim across

the lake after. Thank you to all the staff who went with us. We had a great time.” George Bussey

Kirklees Cup - Rugby Year 7 reached the final of the Kirklees Cup meeting King James’ High School at Huddersfield St Joseph’s Rugby League Club. After conceding early tries, the year 7 team managed to

claw some points back in the later stages of the1st half to leave a gap of 12. The first points in the 2nd half needed to go to St John Fisher to set up a decisive second half. Unfortunately the points

went to King James to stretch the points gap. St John Fisher managed to go over the King James’

line, but late tries from King James settled the game. The score finished 32-16. A great achievement to reach the final in their first year together. Let’s hope we can take it one better next year.

Year 9 reached the final of the competition meeting Honley in the final on the 4th of July at Huddersfield St Joseph’s. They performed heroically, with some exceptional commitment as well as

play. Fishers’ scored the first two tries, but didn’t convert. Honley came back and converted. The game built to half time in much the same fashion with Fishers’ in the lead. The second half saw

Fishers’ begin to dominate with some excellent free flowing rugby and tremendous commitment to

defence. The score finished 38-20 to St John Fisher. The 3rd year running the year group have won the competition.

Year 10 reached the final and met local rivals Earlesheaton on a scorching hot evening. An extremely focused Fisher’s side lined up to retain the cup they won last year. Some expansive rugby,

backed up by solid defence saw the year 10’s take an early lead. This was replied to by Earlesheaton

and around 15 minutes in the score was 16-8. The next try was really important and the Fishers defence ensured it wasn’t going to be Earlesheaton. The first of three full length tries over the course

of the game set the ball rolling and the score was 22-8 at half time. A determined year 10 team continued to pile on the pressure. Excellent handling and supportive running saw Fishers’ breach the

try line a number of times and the contest was beginning to look decided. The year 10’s retained their trophy, eventually winning 60-8.
