Important Note for All Parents:The 2nd - 8th grade program is a DROP-IN activity; children are allowed to come and go as theyplease. While on the playground, they will be encouraged to participate in ongoing, supervised activi-ties. A safe environment will be provided; however, the program should not be considered an alterna-tive for individual child care.

Aqua Tots and Aqua TykesParent/Child Class*2.5 to 5 years, or older if not ready for Children’s Swim, or less than 48” tall. With teacher direction and support, parents take an active role in the developmentof their child’s swim skills. Some songs, games and swim skill techniques willhelp acclimate the child to the aquatic environment. For those parents that feelcomfortable, we may introduce skills that have your swimmer doing things onhis/her own! One adult (need not be a skilled swimmer) must accompany onechild in the water.Aqua Baby

Open SwimFun for the whole family! Children 7 years and younger must beaccompanied in the water by an adult.Coast Guard approved life jackets willbe allowed on children in shallow wateronly, and with direct parentalsupervision (parent in the water). NO waterwings, inflated tubes, masks

or snorkels. Non-swimmers wishing toobserve must pay.

$1.00 - 17 years and under and Seniors 62+$1.50 - 18 years and olderPay each time you attend. EXACT CHANGE,please. A swim test may be given to children wishing to use the diving well or swim in deeper water.

Arrival TimeArrive no earlier than 15 minutes before, and leavewithin 15 minutes of the end of each program. Lockerrooms are not always staffed with attendants.

Pool PoliciesProvide own suits, towels and locks. Showers must betaken before swimming. The Recreation Department isnot responsible for lost or damaged articles.

Children’s Swim Instruction at Longfellow - Afternoons

Level 1A - Intro to Water SkillsLearn basic water safety info, practice submergingface without holding nose, opening eyes underwaterand retrieve submerged object, breath control, floats,and the front crawl (arms, kicking & coordination).Goal: Swim half the width of the pool with properrotary breathing.Level 1B - Intro to Water SkillsPassed Level 1A; perform more skills independently,continue with submerging skills, front crawl (properrotary breathing, arms, kicking & coordination), rollingover from front to back and back to front, front andback glides, kicking on back and recovering to verticalposition. Goal: Swim the complete width of the poolwith proper rotary breathing.Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic SkillsPassed Level 1B; continue kicking on front and back,floating, treading water in chest-deep water using armand leg actions, practice swimming using combinedstrokes on front and back and recovering to verticalposition.

Level 3 - Stroke DevelopmentPassed Level 2; more time is spent in deep water;practice elementary backstroke, rotary breathing andcoordination of front and back crawl, front and backglides, and headfirst entries from sitting and kneelingpositions. Will be introduced to the scissors, dolphinand breaststroke kicks and survival float.Level 4A - Stroke ImprovementPassed Level 3; increase distance and technique onfront crawl and elementary backstroke, improve scis-sors, dolphin, and breaststroke kick. New skillsinclude sidestroke, compact dive, swimming under-water, dolphin kick on back, and open turns on frontand back.Level 4B - Stroke DevelopmentPassed Level 4A; increase distance and improvetechnique on front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke andelementary backstroke; new skills include butterfly,stride and surface dives, survival swimming andtreading water using two different kicks.

Level 5 - Stroke RefinementPassed Level 4B; refine technique on front crawl,back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke,sidestroke, and butterfly; new skills include flip turn onfront and back, shallow-angle dive from side, and sur-face dives.Level 6 - Personal Water SafetyPassed Level 5; learn self-rescue techniques, basicwater safety skills, surface dives, and survival swim-ming. Increase distance on front crawl, back crawl,breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke andbutterfly.Level 6 - Fitness SwimmerPassed Level 5; improve efficiency for fitness/com-petitive swimming; turns, setting up a fitness program,using pace clock and various training techniques;continue to refine/increase distance on front and backcrawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, side-stroke and butterfly.

Children’s Swim Instruction See below for prerequisites and class descriptions. All students will be tested at the first class to ensure proper level placement. We reserve the right tomove students to the correct level. Children may have to repeat a level before all skills are completed satisfactorily. Must be AT LEAST age 7 and ATLEAST 48 inches tall.

Attendance PolicyDue to the accelerated nature of summer school classes, attendance is crucialin successfully completing course requirements. Students cannot miss morethan 3 days of class in any six-week course; no more than 1½ days in 3 week,5 hour courses; no more than 1 day can be missed in hybrid courses. Also,excessive tardies will count as absences. Students who miss more than theallotted number of class periods for any course will not receive credit forthat course. There is a scheduled 15 minute break during each class andstudents may not leave school premises until the completion of their classesfor the day.

Register early!Course offerings are determined by enrollment numbers; locations of a courseoffering are also determined by enrollment and space. We cannot guarantee thatclasses will be available at both campuses.

Grade Replacement Administrative GuidelineIn order to encourage students to obtain mastery ofthe grade level benchmarks, students have theoption to retake any course in which they havereceived a C or below for a higher grade. Once thestudent has successfully completed the retake; thehigher of the two grades will appear on thetranscript and be included in the GPA calculation,however a student may only receive credit for thecourse once. This guideline is retroactive forstudents in the graduating classes of 2012, 2013,and 2014. A student who retakes a class will not beeligible for Valedictorian or Salutatorian.
