Thank You FROM OUR TEAM

Foundation Staff: Amy Willis, Joni Bass and Jill Thompson

On The Cover - We ARE the CarolinaEast Foundation

If there were a price tag on time, creativity and hard work – Denny Murdock would be the largest donor in the history of the Foundation. Denny and his wife, Linda, moved to New Bern

from Baldwinsville, New York in 2005. Denny was the new VP of Operations for Wheatstone and they were a business sponsor of the 2005 Festival of Trees. From that event, a loyal, fun and generous Foundation friend was born. Denny and Linda attended that gala and left with their first donation - a purchased tree. Every year since, Denny has been involved in the holiday fundraiser for the Foundation. This holiday volunteer help has evolved into tak-ing the pictures (500+ children) for Breakfast with Santa, printing all of the posters for the majority of the Foundation events, setting up and breaking down Breakfast with Santa and Denny’s largest print job challenge to date: the

Polar Express. Denny donated and printed the large canvases and helped engineer how this train would actually be constructed. This was a very meaningful project for Denny in that the Polar Express had been such an important story for his children and grandchildren growing up. It was the hit with the 2013 Breakfast with Santa, and kids around town are still heard today say-ing “Alllll Aboard” and singing “Hot, Hot, Hot … Hot Chocolate.” Thank you, Denny, for years of service to the Foundation, an inspiring can-do attitude and a fun self-less heart that helps make our Foundation a success.

CarolinaEast Foundation Friend, Donor, and Volunteer: Denny Murdock

Thank you to the many Foundation friends who agreed to be in our fun cover photo. The inspiration behind the picture is the concept of family and the many important faces of the CarolinaEast Foundation family. Each person pictured is a significant part of our family individually; they also represent a larger group within the Foundation.

What a great year for the CarolinaEast Foundation. With the generosity of our donors, the Foundation has been able to help more patients in need and fund more grants to our local non-profit partners than ever in the Foundation’s history. We are aware and grateful that our staff efforts would not be enough – we are reminded daily that our success is due to the incredible support of our board, our many volunteers and our donors. THANK YOU.

We are excited about next year as we continue to serve our local communities. Our efforts to bring an inpatient hospice home to Craven County will continue as well as beginning to explore how the Foundation can best support the CarolinaEast Health System’s dream of building a comprehensive cancer center here in New Bern.

There is much work to be done and many ways to get involved. Please do not hesitate to contact us and say “I want to help!” We will offer you many meaningful, life-enriching options.

Thank you for your loyal support,

A special thank you to David Snook for many of the pictures in this newsletter.

Business Leader, Community Volunteer, Philanthropist, Friend to All

The community knows Wendy Fisher in many different ways. Wendy is currently president of the family business, Fisher Stores, Inc. The Fisher family business has its roots in Craven County dating back five generations to the 1800s when the first store opened in the Riverdale community. The company has grown to now include 13 Fuel Markets, Fisher Oil Com-pany and Fisher Transports. Wendy stepped into the leadership of that company in 2009, following her father-in-law’s retirement and the death of her husband Brian in 2009. She is thrilled have her daughter Becky working close beside her and her son James learning the busi-ness working a summer job at a Fuel Market. They are honored to be able to continue the family business.

Wendy, along with Lynne Davenport and Reba Aylward, helped establish the Craven Cancer Classic golf tournament in honor and memory of their husbands’ courageous battles with cancer. October 17, 2014 will be the 5th annual tournament. The proceeds from this

tournament go directly into the Scott Dav-enport / Brian Fisher / John Aylward Cancer Warrior Fund that assists patients with cancer care related costs. This fund, through the CarolinaEast Foundation, has helped many local patients with the high cost of needs that arise during a battle with cancer. While Wendy is not a native to New Bern, she considers New Bern to be her adopted home-town. She and Brian married 2 weeks after graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1980 and moved to New Bern, raising four children and enjoying the small town eastern NC life. The support of a small town has been a blessing to the family through the years and she believes strongly in giving back to the community. Wendy is involved with Compassionate Friends, a support group for those who have suffered the loss of a child, Garber United Methodist Church, the CarolinaEast Foundation, and an ad hoc support group self-named the WEBS (Women Evolving Beyond Sorrow). The WEBS, while offering personal support, also believe in supporting the community by attending various fundraisers throughout the year including the Heart Ball, Craven Literacy Council, Taste of

New Bern and the Hageman Nursing Dinner.

Wendy has been a board member of the Caroli-naEast Foundation since 2012. “It is a joy and a privilege to serve with a group of people that are so committed to helping others and making a difference in our community,” says Wendy. Wendy Fisher is a walking example to all who know her of humility, grace and courage. New Bern is a better community due to her making this her home.

Thank you Wendy for all you do for New Bern and the CarolinaEast Foundation.

The CarolinaEast 2013 Employee Campaign was September 16-27. This was another record-breaking, amazing year for employee generosity. With close to 900 of the 2100 employees donating their hard earned dollars to the campaign, $244,531 was raised to support local healthcare initiatives. This sends a powerful message to the community – a message that the employees of CarolinaEast Health System care!

A team of employee volunteers worked for months creating fun Olympic-themed activities and educating and encouraging their co-workers to participate at any level in the campaign. Without the employee volunteers, this campaign would not have been successful. Thank you to all who helped make this campaign a success.

Maya Angelou said it best - “I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.” The employee donors are proud to support the community through this campaign.

Margo Waters – A wonderful example to ALL recipients Margo was the very first recipient of the Joe Hageman nursing scholarship in 2007. The scholarship was smaller then; the fund had just been established. She was awarded $2000 to go towards her nursing education. This began a long history with CarolinaEast, a history that Joe Hageman himself would have loved. Margo was part of an extern summer program the summer of 2007 and stayed on after the summer as an employee in the float pool as a nursing assistant, always eager to learn more. In 2008, Margo graduated from ECU School of Nursing and came back to the CarolinaEast Medical Center to be a nurse, and has since worked in many different areas of patient care, again, always seek-ing to learn. She was thrilled to be asked to

join the scholarship selection committee in 2012 and feels honored to now have a part in that selec-tion process. In the Fall of 2014, Margo is going back to school at Duke to become a Nurse Practitioner – she will be a part time student, full-time nurse at CarolinaEast, full-time Mommy and wife too. The bar was set high with Mr. Joe Hageman’s nursing legacy – Margo has risen to the chal-lenge and has been a scholarship recipient that the Foundation is proud to have helped. Thank you Margo, for your desire to learn and selflessly serve the nursing profession.

2014 Breakfast with SantaD E C E M B E R 6

2 0 1 3 B R E A K F A S T W I T H S A N T A

The proof is in the CarolinaEast Foundation’s annual fundraiser, “Breakfast with Santa” which is truly magical and filled with moments of pure joy for kids. And, as just one of their volunteers, I am genuinely amazed at the planning, creativity and love that I get to see at this event.

It’s not easy, or even practical to think like a child. It is playing the “I Spy with My Little Eyes” game. “What’s the first thing the children will see when they walk in the door?” “Will families love it?” “What is new and exciting and what is traditional and familiar for kids?” And then, there are the more practical questions, “What crafts can little ones do that will also appeal to older kids?”

At “Breakfast with Santa,” when you walk in the door, you see Christmas everywhere with plenty of Santa’s helpers to help you find your way around. We “spy” a snowy scene with elves who are making candy. We “see” Mrs. Claus reading to a group of kids. We “hear” somebody call “All Aboard!” and “see” the Polar Express! It’s Horton, the Grinch and all the Dr. Seuss characters. We “spy” tables where we can do crafts, string a bead necklace, decorate Christmas cookies and write letters to Santa. Little ones crawl “Under the Tree” Kids -Only gift shop. Through the doors, we “peek” at families eating their breakfast at round tables decorated with real gingerbread houses. There’s live piano music playing familiar Christmas songs and most important, Santa himself, in his own living room talking and listening to all the children while having their pictures taken. The sights, the sounds, the smells and the joy of Christmas are all around. And, every year, the Foundation staff and volunteers make it different and so very, very special. This year’s holiday event raised over $30,000 and entertained over 900 attendees during the five seatings!

Throughout my life, I’ve been accused of “looking through the eyes and heart of a child.” As I get older, I realize that it’s not a bad thing. One of the best things of all is that it makes the CarolinaEast Foundation’s “Breakfast with Santa” even more fun. Hope to see you and your little ones this year on December 6th!

Meet Monique Kalonji

8

A N I N S P I R A T I O N T O U S A L L

Monique Kalonji is a third grader that saved her dollars to “help a family with a sick child.” She raised money and saved her coins and dollars for the past year. Monique shared with her parents that she really wanted to help a family in need. The CarolinaEast Foundation was honored when she brought a check for $158 to help a family. The dollars were deposited into the Helmut & Carmen Weisser Children’s Fund that assists local children in need. This is a little girl that has figured out at a young age the secret to happiness.

The appointment was made for two days later. Jessica recalled “Those were the two longest days of our lives. We were numb and in denial. We thought that the second ultrasound would surely show the limbs.” It did not. The limbs were indeed short, ending around the elbows and knees and without hands and feet. However, more concerning was the severe micrognathia. The lower jaw was so small and recessed that there was no airway. The baby was given less than a 1% chance of making it to 24 weeks. Clinton and Jessica went home hand in hand and began the painful process of planning their child’s funeral, a parent’s worst fear. Instead of decorating a nursery, they were picking out the burial plot, the flower ar-rangements and choosing their son’s burial gown. It all seemed so unreal. The Pierces leaned on their faith during this time knowing that God had a plan.

On August 17, 2012, fourteen weeks later, Steven Lennox made his grand entrance into the world. That first sweet, little cry was a sign of life and there was not a dry eye in the delivery room. Lennox spent his first 10 weeks of life at the NC Children’s Hospital at UNC in Chapel Hill. The genetic team there gave them a diagnosis of Moebius Syndrome and oromandibular limb hypogenesis. Moebius syndrome is a rare neurological condition that primarily affects the muscles that control facial expression and eye movement. The muscle weakness combined with the absence of a tongue caused problems with feeding. Lennox was able to come home after having a tracheostomy and a gastrostomy tube (g tube) placed.

The CarolinaEast Foundation was first introduced to Lennox and his family several months ago by Karen Ipock, CarolinaEast Home Health Case Man-ager. When describing him, Karen smiled and said, “Lennox has developed into an energetic and bright little boy. He has learned to crawl and even though he is not able to speak, he is able to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star through sounds. He is now learning to use his prosthetic arms and legs!” Lennox is also able to brush his teeth, comb his hair and he loves to play with Legos.

Since bringing Lennox home, the Pierce family has not looked back. Jessica describes each day as a new adventure. “Lennox has taught our family so much about life, more than we could ever teach him. I think about this journey we are on and I am so amazed that God chose us for this sweet boy.”

Through the love of God, his par-ents and three older siblings, we have a feeling his determination and cleverness will take him far.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Psalm 139:14

You can follow Lennox’s story on his FaceBook page, Limbs For Lennox.

Fearfully & Wonderfully MadeIn January 2012, Clinton and Jessica Pierce were thrilled to find out they were expecting their fourth child. They tried for almost a year and had lost twins during that time. Jessica was very careful in everything that she did and prayed continuously for a smooth pregnancy. Once they hit the 12 week mark, she and Clin-ton were able to breathe a little easier. Nonethe-less, they still continued to pray for their baby.

Jessica’s twenty week ultrasound was scheduled for May 1st. They woke that morning excited to see one of their baby’s first images. They planned a fun day ahead that included making May Day baskets for the neighborhood kids. However, by the end of the day, the Pierce’s world would be forever changed.

Immediately from the start, Jessica could tell that something was not right. The ultrasound technician announced they were having another boy. Clinton was so ecstatic that he overlooked the tech’s facial expres-sions. The room grew quiet, too quiet, confirming Jessica’s concerns. Shortly after, the doctor called Clinton and Jessica into his office. He explained that their baby’s limbs were short and that a more advanced ultrasound at East Carolina University was required.

Our Continued Commitment to Diabetes Celebrating 10 Years of Running the Neuse River Bridge

2014 Neuse River Bridge RunO C T O B E R 1 8

Debra Pogodzinski, Licensed Dietician & Nutritionist

October 18th marks the 10th year anniversary of the Neuse River Bridge Run. Thousands of runners and walkers have raced the Neuse River Bridge for the past 9 years raising much needed resources for eight local nonprofit organizations. Last year’s race raised in excess of $115,000 with over 1,700 runners coming into New Bern from Raleigh, Kentucky and as far away as Alabama. There were nearly 800 participants in the 5K, which is highly populated by local runners, 400 in the 10K and nearly 500 runners in the Half Marathon. Simply, the Bridge Run has become a premiere race in eastern North Carolina, thanks to all who have sup-ported the race in the past.

The Run spans the Neuse River Bridge - 65 feet in the air for the 10K or Half-Marathon. If runners/walkers prefer not to run quite so far, then join the fast and flat 5K across the draw bridge and through scenic, down-town historic New Bern. All three races take place on Saturday, October 18, starting at 7:00 a.m. and end at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center for post-race festivities.

The CarolinaEast Foundation coordinates the awards and the SuperKids Fun Run for 3yrs. – 10 yrs. at Union Point Park on Friday evening, Octo-ber 17 during the early packet pick up, Pasta Push-Off dinner and the Be Active, Be Healthy Expo.

In addition to being great exercise and family activity, the Neuse River Bridge Run also helps support eight local, non-profit organizations. Your money has never reached so many people! Through the combined efforts of the following nonprofit organizations, everyone in Eastern North Caro-lina benefits in one way or another and together we’re building an active community of wellness: CarolinaEast Foundation, Craven Arts Council, Craven Community College Foundation, Mediation Center of Eastern NC, MERCI Clinic, The Promise Place, Religious Community Services (RCS,) and Twin Rivers YMCA. May 9 – 11, Atlantic Beach, NC

The Mile of Hope Childhood Cancer Event is a weekend escape forchildren, and their families, facing cancer. Started in Atlantic Beach by local business people in 1991, the program is now a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and it has been bringing joy to hundreds of children and their families for the past 24 years.

Their mission is to provide children with cancer and their families with an event-filled weekend away from the constant concerns and worries of childhood cancer. Guests are treated to a fun-filled visit to North Carolina’s Crystal Coast with activities and entertainment provided by dedicated volunteers. They work closely with the pediatric oncology departments at ECU, Duke and UNC Hospitals to select the participants.

The Mile of Hope provides meals and lodging for the weekend for their guests along with continuous activities. The volunteers work closely with

the Atlantis Lodge and the Hampton Inn for lodging, beach activities and swimming pool fun. The Channel Marker, White Swan, Pam’s Catering, Pizza Hut and the Pine Knoll Shores Women’s Club have helped with the food. Children of all ages enjoy the fun at Lost Treasures Golf and Raceway and the NC Aquarium is a great attraction for the families.

The Shadow Players are an incredible group of pirates entertaining our participants all weekend. Volunteers from Discovery Diving and Kites Unlimited add to the weekend fun. The Pine Knoll Shores and Havelock Fire & Rescue Departments offer fun and assistance to the families also.

The Mile of Hope weekend is made possible through the generous dona-tions of caring individuals and organizations, including the CarolinaEast Foundation. For additional information, visit www.mileofhope.org, contact Ed Moore at 919-819-1637 or email: [email protected].

Mile of Hope Weekend Childhood Cancer Event

The weekend of Sep-tember 27 – 29, 2013, Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer wel-comed 33 families (141 participants) and 68 volunteers as part of their first ever Anchor-ing the Family program. This unique twist on a traditional family camp

weekend provided respite for cancer warriors and their families who were at different stages in their fight. The weekend focused on rebuilding what the cancer has taken and helping heal as a family in spirit, mind and body. They provided an envi-ronment where the family does not have to worry about finances, cook-ing meals, getting to the next doctor appointment, and instead focused

on each other. Families were able to enjoy a weekend of outdoor fun, activities, healing and meeting other families to share coping strategies.

“We knew when putting the weekend together that the families would have fun, but what happened was so much more than that. What we witnessed was the creation of a unique and magical community within just a few days. Everywhere you looked, parents were connecting with parents about coping strategies and sharing words of encouragement. Children were bonding with other children and families were experiencing their first glimpse of hope in a long time,” said Allison Simmons, Execu-tive Director of Extended Season. This weekend was made possible by a grant from the CarolinaEast Foun-dation as well as a large group of volunteers that range from YMCA staff, YMCA program participants and other local church youth groups. Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer hope to hit their maximum enrollment this year which is approximately 65 families.

Philanthropy, by definition, means “love of humanity,” and Margaret Stancil exemplified that love of humanity both during her living years and with her legacy felt all across Eastern NC. Margaret was a life-long educator from Pamlico County

that loved to teach, loved to garden, loved to travel and learn. She lived simply and comfortably and thrived on helping others. Her husband, the love of her life, Joseph Calvin Stancil, died from wounds he received in France after the Normandy Invasion. It is through her husband’s ultimate sacrifice and Margaret’s natural desire to learn and educate that began her “love of humanity” and seeking to serve others.

CarolinaEast Health System is honored to be remembered by Margaret. She was generous in her estate to support the Cardiac Unit at CarolinaEast. It is through this estate gift that the waiting room on the Cardiac Unit has been made more comfortable and the nursing station upgraded.

In honor of Margaret’s love of roses, local artist Martin Henry Kampitch, created a beautiful metal art piece, all hand crafted, that hangs in the waiting room. There is a butterfly made out of metalfor every room in the unit symbolizing hope and change.

CarolinaEast Health System thanks the generous spirit of Margaret Stancil - what a lasting gift to all who are served in this unit.

Thanks to the generosity of Jon and Karen Segal of New Bern and CarolinaEast Medical Center Nursing Resource Manager, Nan Hall, Reviving

Lives Ministries (RLM) was surprised with funding for the purchase of a van to transport their residents to appointments and to and from work.

This act of kindness began with the monthly selection of a member of the CarolinaEast Leadership Team to identify a local non-profit to benefit

from CarolinaEast’s philanthropic community commitment. Hall chose the important work of Reviving Lives Ministries to be the beneficiary of

CarolinaEast’s generous gift. While visiting with the RLM leadership team, she was told of their need for a transport van to support their clientele’s

continued journey towards recovery. Hall said that the CaroliaEast gift would provide an opportunity for down payment on the much needed van

with RLM financing the balance.Jon and Karen Segal learned of the van need through the CarolinaEast Foundation and generously offered to donate

the remaining $2200 needed to allow RLM to purchase the van outright with no finance charges burdening the organization. This collaboration and

cooperation is one of the many examples of the giving spirit of the very supportive eastern North Carolina community.
