As Baby Boomers arrive at the upper reaches of middle age, South Shore Arts takes a fond look back at the iconic, often innocent, images of life in the nuclear age. Baby Boom or Bust!, featuring iconic imagery by artist Brian J. Sullivan and memorabilia from an atomic childhood, will be presented June 15 – August 31, 2014, with an opening reception on Sunday, June 22, from 12-3pm. Based in Champaign, Illinois, artist Brian J. Sullivan is an artist who celebrates the visual emblems of his childhood. Making use of disparate Americana and advertising images to create pictures layered with multiple meanings, his large-scale paintings explore popular American cultural icons, images, slogans and advertisements of the mid-20th century. Superman, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, the McDonald’s arches, cars from the Tail Fin era—even the Gerber baby—are among the familiar images incorporated into his artwork. Sullivan has been called a master at using non-traditional materials and techniques in combination with each other. For over 34 years he has pushed the envelope not only of materials and processes but also content. He has exhibited his work throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, winning many awards and accolades. His most recent large-scale oil paintings make use of many techniques such as waterslide decals, photo-transfers, embedded paper images, spray paint, fabric paint, crackle paint and encaustics, as well as found objects. Sullivan received his undergraduate degree in Metalsmithing and Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1981). After graduation, he received a scholarship to further his studies at an artist
apprenticeship school in Tennessee. He worked side by side with masters in glass, woodworking, ceramic, fiber and metalsmithing. The next year he moved to Chicago and began working for a large-scale sculptor, helping to fabricate his work. In 1986 he was offered a full scholarship to attend the University of Illinois-Champaign to attain his Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture. “I see myself as a storyteller,” he says, “A silent witness to the world around me. It’s always about the image, not necessarily what I have seen, but what I have perceived beyond the facade. I am interested in exploring popular American cultural stereotypes and the exploitation of the general public by the mass media. Over time, these iconic images take on a meaning all their own.” Curated by South Shore Arts executive director John Cain, who himself turns 60 this summer, Baby Boom or Bust! will feature vintage collectibles from private collections, including Hanna Barbera characters, Barbie and Ken, Howdy Doody, space toys and robots, lunch boxes, presidential memorabilia and vintage paint-by-numbers.
Of the period showcased in the exhibit, Cain says, “It was a Yabba-Dabba-Doo time! I was happy then.” An only child, Cain grew up in the proverbial Atomic Ranch, a veritable Barbie’s Dream House, surrounded by his heart’s desires. He has never left home. South Shore Arts will celebrate the opening of Baby Boom or Bust! on Family Arts Day, a day of free activities at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, on Sunday, June 22. For further information call 219/836-1839 or visit www.SouthShoreArtsOnline.org.
BABY BOOM OR BUST!
We could not have needed it more or said it better. Who knew back in September when we named our VIP event a Winter Warm-Up Party that it would be so true. The party for Mid-Century Modern: Style in the Age of Mad Men was held on January 28, 2014, wedged between deadly snowstorms and record-breaking low temperatures. At party-time, it was 5 degrees with a 20 degree below wind chill!
But people wanted to get out, and over 150 attended the event, which featured wine and beer tastings, live piano music in the Mad Men genre and delicious hors d’oeuvres. Indiana Wine and Spirits and Indiana Beverage helped with the tasting which included reserve wines and craft beers. South Shore Arts understands that our educational role in the community begins in the classroom but does not end there. We continue our mission of encouraging the pursuit of life-long learning and a deep appreciation for the arts. We offer educational opportunities beginning in the early years (pre-K) through the golden years.
Studies show increased evidence that a life rooted in the arts has long-reaching benefits. Early childhood exposure helps to develop cognitive functions and fine motor skills. The arts in early adolescence through adulthood strengthen essential skills, including complex problem-solving, verbal and non-verbal communication and preparation for a creative and competitive workforce. Participating in the arts in later years promotes physical dexterity, improved brain function and overall improved quality of life.
The benefits of arts education, at any age, are innumerable. We make it an integral part of what we do at South Shore Arts to advocate and exemplify the importance of art and its role in education inside and outside the classroom. South Shore Arts educational opportunities include art classes, educational outreach, art and culture lectures, artist talks, docent-led gallery tours, scholarships, field trip opportunities, performances and literature readings.
Our Art Classes are led by highly qualified instructors who provide top-quality art instruction. With locations in Munster, Hammond and Crown Point, we offer a variety of disciplines ranging from drawing to photography.
We understand that personal growth in the arts can be cultivated between a parent and child. Our Mommy & Me classes offer an environment for parent and child to create together. An engaging learning environment can be found in our Senior Workshop along with a sense of artistic camaraderie and community.
South Shore Arts Provides Education Beyond the Classroom
A Boy Scouts troop visits the South Shore Arts branch in Crown Point for a lecture and workshop
Puppeteers Joshua Dixon and Jim West with students from Bailly Elementary School, Chesterton
Learning about art in an academic sense doesn’t need to be in a classroom environment. Our Art in Focus program is a bi-monthly art appreciation series featuring guest lecturers, documentary films and demonstrations. This free series provides a rich opportunity for those interested in engaging in dialogue about the arts in an open and friendly environment. This popular morning program continues to grow with plans for expansion into evening sessions.
Educating educators has increasingly become an important facet of the Education Department at South Shore Arts. Our Arts Education Resource Fair is a free event
open to all elementary teachers and administrators who are interested in incorporating art into their curriculum. They are provided with opportunities to meet representatives from arts organizations who offer education programs for elementary school classrooms. The next resource fair is scheduled for August 13, 2014.
South Shore Arts Professional Development opportunities are designed for art teachers and classroom teachers interested in incorporating art into their curriculum. The professional development can range from short workshops to multiple full-day sessions, the focus of which includes creating multi-disciplinary lessons that incorporate technology, developing strategic plans for how to adapt to changing educational standards and addressing students with special needs. We have also been an integral part of developing district-wide curricula for Pre-K to 12th grade, providing a cohesive plan for how to build upon skills learned at each grade level.
We have hosted a number of family-friendly arts events including Family Arts Day at Lincoln Elementary in East Chicago, which provided a fun-filled day of learning about artists and musicians throughout history. The event was free and the children and their families participated in projects at the art and music stations, as well as viewing a stage performance. Other art and music educational programs include Toot ’n Doodle and Rhythm ’n Hues. Through a partnership with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, students visit the Center for Visual and Performing Arts to have hands-on music and art workshops.
We are also a go-to point for arts information. We are called upon daily to lecture at our facilities and at off-site locations to groups ranging from Crown Point High School’s National Junior Art Society, Boy and Girl Scout troops to classes from Purdue Calumet.

When Indiana Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann recently announced the winners of the 2014 Hoosier Women Artist Contest at a ceremony held at the Indiana Statehouse, South Shore Arts Exhibitions Director Laura Cutler was among those honored!
The contest, held every year in conjunction with Women’s History Month, is now in its seventh year. Winners of the Hoosier Women Artist Contest have their artwork displayed in the Lieutenant Governor’s office for one year.
The contest celebrates a variety of artistic interests, including drawings, paintings and photography. Past entries have included—but are not limited to—portraits, landscapes, animals, buildings and abstracts.
“This contest is another way for us to showcase the talented and creative artists we have in our state,” says the Lieutenant Governor. “I am looking forward to the artwork being displayed in my front office and thank each artist for sharing her work with visitors from all over the world.”
The winning artwork was judged and selected by Lt. Governor Ellspermann and Dr. Laura Holzman, Assistant Professor of Art History and Museum Studies at the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI.
Visitors are encouraged to stop by Room 333 in the Indiana Statehouse to view the art with friends and family during normal business hours.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be recognized among so many talented artists in Indiana,” Laura says of her inclusion in the exhibit. The following are the winning artists: Laura Cutler, The Roofer, Charcoal, LaPorteKendal R. Miller, South Fork Creek in Snow, Black & white
