e President’s Report What an exciting time for National Dairy Shrine! e Executive Committee met a couple months ago in Ft. Atkinson at the Museum. It is my personal favorite place to meet. I lose track of time looking at cows of all breeds, and sorting out which one’s genetics have stood the test of time. On top of that, it is always a learning experience when I review our previous award winners from all aspects of our dairy industry. At the time of the meeting, Dr. Dave Selner, our Executive Director, was all about getting measurements correct and energy-saving light fixtures installed while directing the whole new design and museum renovations. Now the museum renovations are ready for your viewing. Plan to make that stop on your Expo trip this year. If you’ve been there before, you will see vastly improved displays and a museum more in tune with the way young people learn in 2014. Dave has devoted incredible time, energy, patience and skill to this project, not to mention handling the financial aspect. anks and deepest appreciation to Dr. David Selner for overseeing this project, and to both David and former NDS president Corey Geiger for their vision and belief that it could happen. What a journey. Speaking of the Executive Committee meeting, we had an interesting session with Mary Creek (producer, Md.) and Tommy Martin (Industry, Fl) during our meeting. Both have received multiple awards for annual membership recruitment and were asked to share some of their approaches to recruiting new memberships. Although we receive important, significant sponsorships, donations and endowments, membership income remains our mainstay. From Mary Creek: • Always wear your NDS pin when attending a meeting, convention or other affair where you will interact with others involved in the dairy industry. is quite often leads to the question about the pin, which provides the perfect segue into a friendly discussion about Dairy Shrine, its purpose and the one-time $50 fee. • Solicit a membership from anyone who sells you things on the farm. Chances are pretty good they are making more than $50.00 from having your business. • Mary “feels people out” through conversation to determine what aspect of Dairy Shrine will interest them most. Do they have college age children? en she tells about our scholarship program and that we award more than $50,000 annually in scholarships. Perhaps one is a history buff, or has a collection of milk bottles. en she can discuss the museum and explain that NDS maintains the history of our industry. • Consider NDS membership as an award or prize. From Tommy Martin: • Tommy made it part of the culture where he worked. You are involved in the dairy industry, making your living in the dairy industry. You should be a member of National Dairy Shrine. (It was that way when I started picturing cows with Danny Weaver’s Agri-Graphics. It was simply understood that if this industry was your life, then you would be a National Dairy Shrine member.) • Tommy signed up most of his contacts on farms he serviced. • Solicit co-workers in the dairy industry. For dairy producers, substitute “neighboring producers” for “co-workers.” • Tommy found he could, in some cases, provide a membership and submit it to the company in his promotion budget. You can each add to this list. With the favorable milk price and reasonable feed cost, now should be the perfect time to increase membership. While at the National Jersey Convention, I was asked to give an update on National Dairy Shrine. Of course, I encouraged all to visit the “new” Dairy Shrine Museum, and I related that with the addition of three new scholarships this year - through added sponsorship from DMI - that we now have scholarships available for every year in undergrad, as well as graduate school. I then asked all Dairy Shrine members to stand. How great it looked from up at the podium when most in the room stood! As SUMMER 2014 THE CHRONICLE Honor past and present dairy leaders.
