About US We think THE OLD MARKET (or TOM for short) is the best place in Brighton & Hove to see a show. We aim to encourage the presentation and production of performance arts, by hand-picking shows (see TOM’S TAGS for our picks).

We often add new shows – keep an eye on THEOLDMARKET.COM and sign up to our newsletter to stay one-step ahead of the crowds.

TOM is owned and managed by two of the city’s most successful artists, the creators of international smash-hit show STOMP.

KEy:

Hola,Summer is here, and we’ve got a programme to match. Think music inspired by warmer climes, outdoor theatre, out-of-this-world playgrounds, and Edinburgh Festival favourites past and future.

Dubbed “British pop’s most refreshing triumphs” (The Guardian), Wild Beasts (p8) join us for two exclusive South Coast dates, and enjoy two nights of cultural border-hopping as part of Crossing Borders Festival (p5), with Grupo Lokito, Jali Fily Cissokho, and more.

The long-term theatre aficionados amongst you might remember the astonishing debut of young Brighton actor George Dillon 26 years ago (“The best example of someone to watch how to perform” Steven Berkoff), in a triple bill of world premieres. For one night only, Stunning the Punters (p7) returns to Brighton. If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss this rare chance to see what all the fuss was about.

Ahead of Edinburgh Festival, get a taste of its upcoming comedy acts here in TOM’s Bar (p3). We’re always adding new acts so keep an eye on our website for the latest line-up.

And finally. What could be more summery than putting your best sun hat on, rounding up your family and friends, and heading over to one of Brighton’s most delightful new outdoor spaces to watch the next generation of rappers and poets tear proverbial chunks out of each other? Poets vs MCs: Youth Team (p6) is a cheeky and irreverent competition between artforms, coming soon to Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT).

See you soon, and don’t work too hard.

26 years ago, audiences and critics in Brighton and Edinburgh rushed to witness a young Brighton actor’s stunning solo debut. Last seen in Brighton in 1997 that show, a triple bill of world premières with an unashamed title, returns for one night only!

Stunning the Punters (And Other Stories) is one man, George Dillon, on a bare stage giving a bravura high-energy performance of three tales of imagination run wild: Master of Café Society by Steven Berkoff, the title story by Robert Sproat and Dillon’s own adaptation of The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostoevsky.Find out more: georgedillon.com/stunning

The Kendal/Leeds-based much-loved band, Wild Beasts return to Brighton with a 2-day residency at The Old Market. Their afrobeat and rockabilly infused ‘00s post-punk lent circus surrealism is led by Hayden Thorpe’s rich falsetto and refreshingly arcane lyrics.

After a period of intense touring, the band-members announced a break so they could concentrate on recording their fourth album, Present Tense, released in early 2014. The passion for creating a highly original sound is reflected in the band’s output, with the album nominated for an Ivor Novello Award which acknowledged the exceptional song-writing and consistency.

Winner - The Scotsman Fringe First award 2015This is the story of one boy’s granddad who won a fortune betting on the 1966 football World Cup and, when diagnosed with cancer, gambled it all on living to see the year 2000. An intergenerational tale of what we live for and what we leave behind.

This funny and heartwarming multi-award winning show had a sell-out season at Traverse Theatre during Edinburgh Festival 2015, as well as sell-out runs in Australia and the United States, and was featured on BBC2’s Culture Show.
