In 1982 we produced the first high performance water resistant turnout rug. This was followed by the first fully waterproof and breathable rugs by the end of the eighties.

We perfected the “Stay-dry” principle of using wicking linings that transport sweat and moisture away from the horse while the inside of the lining

remains dry and keeps the horse warm.

In the 1990s we developed the first truly light-weight fully waterproof and breathable turnout for use at higher temperatures.

We also developed the first of its kind, a sun/heat reflective rug with aluminium lining, heat retentive layers and anti-bacterial lining.

In 2000 we introduced the revolutionary Buzz-Off full-body, fly and UV protection rug. The outstanding overall performance

and durability of this product is reflected in the strong customer approval and satisfaction.

In 2012, Bucas then launched another revolution in the horse world with the Buzz-Off Zebra fly rug. We designed this rug based on the principle that Zebras in the wild are never bombarded with flies. This is due to the pattern of their stripe. Simply put, the flies are confused by the stripes so stay away!

2014 launched the New Select Range of rugs, our new layer system for indoor and outdoor

use. We also launched our new Retail Portal for use for our trade customers to order through the

Bucas.com trade app. We updated and rebuilt the main bucas.com website for our end users to get

information they needed and for them to register their products for guarantee.

We introduced a new fastening on the original Smartex turnout rug after 25 years to include an innovative magnetic Snap-lock fastening across the

Smartex range. We also introduced our first therapeutic horse rug with the Bucas Recuptex Therapy rug being launched into shops in Spring 2016. This

rug works with the body’s own magnetic field and helps promote healing of muscles and improve blood circulation.

Bucas is the name which is synonymous with technical equine rugs and for good reason too! We pride ourselves in creating a collection of technical horse rugs to ensure that your horse is suitably dressed no matter the weather or occasion!

Thus, this great tradition of pioneering “intelligent” horse rugs continues and our product range today includes a greater choice of

high performance products than ever before.

Since 1981 Bucas have merged a great Irish equestrian tradition with the latest technical

developments and experience from other industries, countries and markets. This has resulted in

the development of a wide range of highly innovative and technically advanced products. From

the beginning, we have exported more than 90% of our products to markets around the world.

Intelligent RugsBecause we know that the weathermen never get it 100% right, our intelligent turnout rugs boast breathable properties together with stay-dry linings. So, should the weather change while your horse is turned out, there’s no need to worry about changing rugs as these rugs work over a greater temperature range than ordinary rugs.

Our turnout rugs are helpfully labelled with “temperature gauges” instead of the traditional weight system – why? Well, because we have developed highly technical fabrics that, not only offer maximum performance in terms of insulation and breathability, but we have managed to do

this without bulk, therefore they naturally weigh less than a standard rug and perform at a wider range of temperatures than other rugs on the market. With Bucas, the weight of the rug is considerably less – yet the warmth rating is much more than expected for such a light-weight blanket. Our Turnout Temperature Guide clearly shows the recommended temperatures for our different Turnouts.

The Power Turnout has a heat reflective, aluminium inner coating and a sun reflective, silver outer which extends the temperature range at which the Power Turnout can be used. It also comes with Stay-dry, Anti-Bacterial lining which means the rug can be put on a wet horse the same way as a sweat rug. It will quickly dry the horse and can be left on, thus avoiding extra rug changes. The Select Quilts are available in two weights, 150g and 300g, and two linings, Stay-dry and Silk-feel.

The Select Quilt Neck is available to complete the Select rugs and is sold separately.

The Select Quilt SD 150g and 300g is also available in a Big Neck version which is a great rug for stallions and breeds of horses that tend to be wider across the shoulders, like Friesians, Andalusian and Draughts.

The Bucas Competition Cooler is smart and practical and is classically made with stay-dry lining on the upper part and fly mesh fabric on the lower part.

It is the perfect light-weight cooler for travelling on warm competition days as the stay-dry lining will keep the horse dry and comfortable and the lower mesh part will help cool the horse, while allowing air to circulate.

Available in sizes 115 / 5’0 - 165 / 7’0.

Power CoolerThe Power Cooler is a high performance, light-weight ,multi-purpose rug, ideal as a sweat rug, travel rug, competition and light stable rug.

It has a single layer of stay-dry fabric which wicks away moisture and ensures that the horse is always dry. The Power Cooler is available in a classic cut and full neck, in Navy and Black.

The Bucas Recuptex Therapy range helps to prevent numerous medical problems and also help in the treatment of a vast array of ailments.

The material is made from an extremely fine, stainless steel mesh so acts like a Faraday Shield, reflecting the magnetic fields created inside the body. Preserving these fields stimulates blood circulation and oxygen flow in the horse’s body and back, which heals and reduces both swelling and inflammation and promotes faster healing.

It can be left on your horse for 24 hours, 7 days a week if necessary but it is advised to slowly increase and monitor the use of the Recuptex Therapy rug when first being used. As the properties in the material help warm up the muscles sometimes the horse may sweat after long periods of use.

The Recuptex Therapy Quarter Sheet helps increase blood circulation and warm up muscles faster while you ride. The material prevents the escape of the natural magnetic field of the horse’s back and reflects this back into the body, working naturally and non-invasively. It’s ideal for warming up horses and helping muscles recover faster when cooling down. The sheet is waterproof and breathable with a rip-stop outer.

The Recuptex Therapy Dog Rug helps to increase blood circulation throughout the body, warm up muscles and reduce swelling and inflammation. It is ideal for all dogs, especially working and older dogs. It is waterproof and breathable with a ripstop outer fabric and adjustable full-belly protection.
