SWIM BASICS

SWIM STROKES

Accompany your infants and toddlers they learn to be

comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills.

Your child will participate in fun and confidence-building experiences, while you learn

about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance

of supervision.

Learn water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by achieving benchmark skills:• Swim, float, swim sequence of front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide & exit.• Jump, push, turn & grab

Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water

safety skills and build stroke technique. Kids learn to be safe

This year, the Sewickley Valley YMCA launched new lessons to increase the accessibility and enjoyment of swimming to all ages and skill levels. The latest evolution of Y Swim Lessons accommodates varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers progress between levels. Through this approach, advanced swimmers flow more easily to higher levels while swimmers who need more instruction can learn at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.“We want swim lessons to be a rite of passage for ALL children, and to help kids stay safe in and around the water while developing a love of swimming,” said Kelly Wagner, Senior Director for Aquatics.

Our Aquatics staff members are available to answer any questions about the swim program and to help place your child in the appropriate swim level. MAKE UP POLICYTo meet the needs and wishes of our members, YMCA classes are tightly scheduled and often full. We ask that you choose your programs carefully as make-up and substitute classes are not possible.

PRORATED CLASSESClass fees will not be prorated for late registrations. Late registrations are accepted in most programs (late registration for swim lessons is not recommended) but will require payment of the full class fee.

THUNDER/LIGHTNING POLICYIn the event of inclement weather, including thunder or lightning, the pool will close, and the pool deck will be cleared. The pool area will remain closed for 20 minutes after each flash of lightning, and/or 20 minutes after each clap of thunder. All patrons and staff must exit the pool and whirlpool. Swim lessons will typically run as scheduled and children will learn skills on the pool deck.

PROGRAM REFUND POLICYRefunds will be issued if notice is given at least five business days prior to the start date of the program. All refund requests must be made directly through the director of the program. Refunds will be completed in the manner by which the payment was made. The Y reserves the right to cancel a program that does not have the minimum enrollment.

BEING OUR BEST SELVESThe Y community is at its best when we all are at our best. Our core values guide how we engage with each other at the Y.

Caring: The Y is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for every member and guest. To promote safety and comfort for all, we ask individuals to act appropriately at all times when participating in Y programs at the Y or at off-site locations.

Honesty: To carry out the Y mission, we ask that members and guests identify themselves to staff when asked, and be able to produce a Y membership card or identification upon request.

Respect: We expect persons using the Y to behave in a mature and responsible way, and to respect the rights and dignity of others. We do not permit language or any action that may hurt or frighten another person, including staff.

We are here for those who need us most. Over the last century, our programs and services have evolved, but our dedication to serving the changing needs of the community have always remained at the core of our mission. Financial assistance, supported by the Annual Campaign, offers programs and services of the Y to those in need. In 2016, the Sewickley Valley YMCA awarded $416,817 to individual and families in need.

Your generous support for our Annual Campaign allows us to continue to meet the growing needs of the community. Working families received affordable state-licensed child care so they could work. Kids attended summer camp where they grew in confidence, learned to swim, and made memories. Families from all walks of life relied on our Y to live healthier.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN changing lives begins with you.
