Franke Park Day Camp provides children with enjoyable outdoor experiences in a wooded setting which foster cooperation through learn-ing, playing, working, problem solving, and socializing together. Since 1946, Franke Park Day Camp has been serving the children of this community with an emphasis on basic camping skills, nature education, and Native American Lore. Any individual, 4-18 years of age, may register for Franke Park Day Camp, regardless of sex, color, national origin, religion, or disability.

HOURSDay Camp begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Wednesday, camp begins at 1:00 p.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m. Before and after camp child care is available as early as 6:30 a.m. and as late as 6:00 p.m. See Camp Care.

Campers should be dropped off and/or picked up at the Nature Lodge in Franke Park.

WEDNESDAY EVENING PROGRAMDay Camp ends every Wednesday evening with an open house, staff introductions and a special program of songs and skits from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Parents and family members are encouraged to attend and join the fun. Franke Park Day Camp t-shirts will be avail-able for purchase at this time.

FRIDAY POW-WOWSEach session of camp closes with a pow-wow on Friday, from 2:00-3:00 p.m., where the campers will perform authentic Native American dances and receive their feathers and/or dog tags. The weekly pow-wows help campers prepare for the Annual Big Pow-Wow at the end of camp. Family and friends are invited to attend.

CAMP CAREBefore and After Camp ProgramAn early morning and late afternoon Camp Care program is offered for campers ages 6-12. Camp Care will be held before and after the regular day camping program on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The morning session runs from 6:30 a.m. until day camp begins at 9:00 a.m. and features breakfast, games, arts and crafts, and nature hikes. The late afternoon session begins when day camp adjourns at 3:30 p.m. and runs until 6:00 p.m. Arts and crafts, games, and nature hikes are also featured in the afternoon program as well as a light snack. Each Camp Care program is $25. Space is limited. Note: Camp Care is not offered on Wednesdays.

4-5 YEAR OLD PROGRAMA thematic approach exposes young chil-dren to the concepts of seeds and plants, trees, animals, and Native Americans in this pre-camp experience. Space is limited to 40 campers per session. Due to space limita-tions, campers may attend only one session of camp.

6-11 YEAR OLD PROGRAMNature education, basic camping skills, and Native American cultures are emphasized in the 6-8 and 9-11 year old programs. Camp-ers enjoy a wide range of activities includ-ing hiking, fire building, outdoor cooking, swamp study, nature walks, arts and crafts, Native American rituals/dancing, games, mudsliding, etc. Space is limited to 192 campers per session. Due to space limita-tions, campers may attend only one session of camp.

ADVANCED CAMPER PROGRAMThe Advanced Camper program is open to individuals, 12-18 years of age, who wish to be Junior Leaders (12 years) or Counsel-ors-In-Training (13-18 years). The program involves day camping, overnight camping, Native American Lore, basic camping skills, canoe instruction, nature education, ecol-ogy, conservation, camp and community service projects, social activities, and assist-ing the Franke Park Day Camp staff. For more information and a registration packet, please call 427-6000. Space is limited.

All campers must be of minimum age by June 1, 2019. Campers (with the exception of CITs) are limited to one camp session.Registering for more than one camp session will result in cancellation of the additional session(s) and a refund less processing fees.

MEET THE SUPERVISORThe 2019 Franke Park Day Camp supervi-sor is Chris Freehill. Chris is returning for his 42nd year on staff and his 29th year as camp supervisor. He teaches fifth grade at Forest Park Elementary School. Chris looks forward to another great summer at camp.

Franke Park Day Campers from all sessions throughout the summer are invited back to participate in the annual Big Pow-Wow and reunite with the friends they made during camp. The program features authentic Native American dances around a big bonfire. Family and friends are invited to attend this traditional Franke Park Day Camp finale!

LOCATIONCity Safari’s base camp is located at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conserva-tory, 1100 S. Calhoun Street in downtown Fort Wayne with staff-led excursions to points of interest within walking distance and traveling by van to exciting locations around Northeast Indiana. Campers return to the Conservatory by 4:00 pm for pick up.

Week #1 ..................... June 10-14Park ExplorersThis week at camp we will explore differ-ent types of parks, including state and city parks. We will learn about native birds at Pokagon State Park and test our bird knowl-edge as we compete in “Bird Olympics”. Take advantage of what the local parks have to offer and learn more about parks in northeast Indiana this week at camp!

Week #2 .................... June 17-21Geology WeekOur focus this week will be learning all about the science of geology. Our trip this week takes us to Mounds State Park near Anderson to learn about the park’s geo-logical features. We will also become ‘rock detectives’ during a program with Science Central. Join us this week and become a budding geoscientist!

Week #3 ................... June 24-28Recycle, Reduce and ReuseEach of us can do our part to help our planet! The Allen County Solid Waste Dis-trict will teach us all about recycling. Then, we will travel to Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center to learn about recyclers found in nature. Join us this week to learn how to choose your part to help Earth be a better place for all living things!

Week #4 ....................... July 8-12Indiana Through the AgesNortheastern Indiana has a rich and fasci-nating history. Not only will we explore what life was like long ago, but we will also learn about a famous Indiana naturalist from our state’s history! This week’s trip takes us to the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site in Rome City to tour Gene Stratton Porter’s cabin. Learn about differ-ent aspects of Indiana History this week!

Week #5 ..................... July 15-19Farm to ForkWhere does your food come from? We will learn where honey comes and what it is like to work in a fruit orchard. At DeCamp’s Gardens in Albion we will explore the “farm to fork” movement and learn what all plants need to survive. This week is sure to be the “tastiest” week of camp!

Week #6 ......................July 22-26Animals All Around Calling all animal lovers – this week is for you! We will be learning about all kinds of animals this week – exotic, domestic, farm and native wildlife. Not only will we visit our hometown zoo, but we will travel to Free-dom Acres near Cromwell to learn about farm animals. Join us this week as we dis-cover all kinds of animals near and far!

Come explore the city and discover fun in Fort Wayne and surrounding areas. Each week of camp incorporates a different theme through field trips, guest speakers, activities, games, and arts and crafts. Kids will do a little gardening and compare life inside and outside the city. Camp also includes a Citilink bus ride to Northside pool for some fun in the sun. Join us for one week or all six as we explore downtown, admire wild animals up close, learn about recycling and how life was way back when. Pick your week(s) and get your adventure started. Limit 24 campers per week.

CONFIRMATION NOTICESCampers will receive an e-mail confirmation the week prior to their camp session with all the information needed for the upcoming week. Keep a look out for this email! (If you do not have an email address on file your confirmation will come in the mail.)

F.I.T.“Farmers in Training” is designed to provide children ages 12 and older a more active role in the care of livestock, vegetable gar-dening, hands-on beekeeping, blacksmith demonstrations and campfire cookouts on Fridays. Farmers in Training harvest and sell their vegetables at the Farmers’ Market in addition to participating in games and other fun activities.

C.I.T.“Counselor in Training” is for campers 13-18 years of age who have completed 2 weeks of F.I.T. Counselors in Training are role mod-els for the younger campers. The program is designed to train youth how to be confident leaders among their peers. C.I.T.s will have opportunities to learn important teambuild-ing, leadership, and agriculture skills as they assist camp counselors in leading activities such as beekeeping, blacksmithing, garden-ing and animal care. The program is limited to 8 campers per week. Each camper will be requred to provide two references to com-plete their registration.

CAMP BUDDIESChildren who wish to attend camp together must indicate this on the registration form and both children must request it. We will do our best to place the campers together as requested, however, due to the volume of registrations and the lottery processing sys-tem, we cannot guarantee it.

Come spend a week on the farm! Our Farmin’ Fun Day Camp provides a stimulating, healthy and beautiful environment where you will learn about soil, plants, animals and the source of our food. Campers will be able to continue the cycle of farm-to-table in our new teaching kitchen. The camp integrates hands-on farming such as gardening and animal care, cooperative games, blacksmithihg and nature exploration for a memorable and diverse summer camp experience. You will care for farm animals; hike in the woods; play in the creek; wash, dye and felt wool from one of our sheep; enjoy hayrides around the farm and much more!

2) By MailSimply complete the day camp registration form in this brochure (or a copy of it) and mail to the address above. Please use a separate registration form for each camper.

3) By FaxFAX your completed registration form to (260) 427-6020. Be sure to include your Visa, MasterCard or Discover number, expiration date and CVV code. Available 24 hours a day.

4) Drop BoxIf our office is closed, you may drop your registration in the 24-hour drop box located at the front entrance of our building at 705 E. State Blvd.

5) In PersonYou may register in person at the Parks and Recreation Department, 705 E. State Blvd., (corner of State and Parnell), Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

We cannot accept day camp registrations over the phone. Confirmations will be sent (by mail or e-mail) within a week of registration. Kids for Nature Summer Camp RegistrationRegistration for Kids for Nature Summer Camps is currently underway. You may register on-line at www.kidszoo.org. Refer to page 6 for registration procedures and the zoo’s refund policy. Questions may be directed to the zoo at [email protected] or 260-427-6808.

Parks & Recreation Refund PolicyFull refunds less a processing fee of $5 or 10% (whichever is greater) will be granted to individuals if requested before the day the camp session begins. Refunds requested less than one day prior to the start of the camp session may be granted only for illness or medical reasons. These refunds will be pro-rated and issued in the form of a credit to your account with us, which may then be applied to a future purchase. Please allow 4-6 weeks for processing refunds. Visa, MasterCard and Discover refunds are credited to your account immediately.

Things to Know Before You Sign Up• Registration for day camps opened on February 6. Registra-

tions are processed in the order they are received. Space is limited and placement in any given session cannot be guar-anteed. If the session(s) for which you have registered is full, you will be notified by phone so you may choose another session, be placed on a waiting list or request a refund.

• On-line registrations are accepted immediately with no time delay.

• Checks should be made out to Board of Park Commissioners. If you are registering for other Parks and Recreation programs in addition to day camp, please submit a separate check for the camps.

• We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

I, as legal guardian representing a minor participant, agree to release the City of Fort Wayne, its officers, employees and volunteers from any and all li-ability for accidents, injuries, losses of and/or damage to his/her person or property that may arise out of his/her participation in or presence at the above activity(s).
