Hidden History of Islip Town – Central Islip Historic Gems -
September 7, 2019
The community of Central Islip has a long history. Its location in the
northern section of the Town of Islip and its long association with the
state hospitals has made it a place of interest since many do not realize the
vibrant community that grew up around those facilities and the historic
structures that remain. Starting at Brookwood Hall, we will travel first
to the Central Islip Methodist Episcopal Church which is home to the
Central Islip Historical Society and a historic cemetery. After that we will
travel to the property of the Central Islip Civic Association to look at the
preserved and recreated structures there. A discussion of what the state
(formerly city) hospitals were will be part of this stop. This discussion will
cover the farm colony aspects as well as the vocational training given at
these facilities. From there we will travel to Pilgrim State Hospital to see
the collection at the Long Island Psychiatric Museum which is located on
the Pilgrim State campus. This museum contains a collection of
memorabilia, artifacts, and photos covering the history of the three
Long Island hospitals, Kings Park, Central Islip, Pilgrim State, that have
been merged with Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. From there we will
return to Brookwood Hall.

TEA AT THREE
During the First Gold Coast (1870s–1920s), the wealthy residents who took advantage of the recreational and vacation resources of the Town of Islip had to build more than homes, but also develop communities to support the estates. During this tour we will look at some of the ancillary structures that were important to the summer life here in Islip Town, many still in use today. Beginning at Brookwood Hall, one of the last of the estate homes (or in the parlance of the time “cottages”) we will visit St. Marks Church. St. Marks served the religious needs of those who came here for the summer season. From there we pass some of the smaller mansions that were part of the later group of residents and into Great River where we will stop at Emmanuel Episcopal Church and Churchyard where many of the members of the Nicoll Family are buried. From there we will travel on Montauk Highway (the original South Country Road of 1735) to visit the South Side Sportsman’s Club which started the move to build “hunting lodges” on the South Shore. While there, we will also be able to visit the last operational tub mill which was part of the Nicoll Grant which has been recently restored. The club was also one of the places where Town Board meetings were held, while it was the Snedecor Inn. We will end with a drive into Oakdale for a glimpse of some of the remaining structures of the Idle Hour estate and will return to Brookwood Hall. Bus Tour Fee: $30 per person
Hidden History of Islip Town – The Hidden Gold Coast:
September 28, 2019
There are 25 sites on the National Register of Historic Places within the boundaries of the Town of Islip. These places provide us another view of the history of the Town, each of them telling a story of the development and the life in the Town at the time they were built. These places along with a number of others are on the New York State Historic Inventory, are silent witnesses to the development of a unique place to live. Fee: $10.00 per person.

From Calligraphy to Mixed-Media Painting With Dr. Gan Yu
Chinese calligraphy, one of the most ancient and condensed forms of abstract
art, is considered to have the beauty of image in painting, the beauty of
dynamism in dance, the beauty of rhythm in music, and “an echo of the forms
and movements of nature.” Chinese calligraphy is not only a practical
technique for writing, but also a uniquely artful visual expression of
communication as well as a branch of learning or discipline. In this workshop,
participants will learn to appreciate Chinese calligraphy including the study of
practical methods of writing in major styles used from the ancient to present.
The workshop focuses on the essential elements and basic techniques of
Chinese calligraphy as well as other mixed-media painting skills and
encourages participants to create unique artworks combining calligraphic
beauty with other media and materials. Students should request materials list.

Sound Healing Meditation With Angela Strynkowski
Singing bowls produce sounds which invoke a deep state of relaxation to
naturally assist one in entering into meditation. They are a quintessential aid to
meditation and can be found on private Buddhist altars, temples, monasteries,
and meditation halls throughout the world. In addition to their traditional usage
for meditation, singing bowls are used for deep relaxation, stress reduction,
holistic healing, Reiki, chakra balancing, and World music. Playing the bells
usually causes an immediate centering affect. Meditation on the subtle sounds
of the Tibetan singing bowl tunes one into the universal within and without. All
are welcome. No experience with meditation necessary.
