  • Dear Gloucester Catholic Students, Families and Community, Over the past months, we have been preparing to welcome our students, faculty and staff back to campus and reopen school in September. The global pandemic has changed the way we live and we adjust accordingly. Our reopening plan was developed in coordination with the Diocese of Camden with the expectation that we reopen full time for in-person learning. We are following the New Jersey guidelines, the CDC, and local public health officials to ensure the safety of our students, families, faculty, staff and all members of our community as we reopen school. We are indebted to the members of the Planning Task Force for their input and expertise in developing the plan.

The success of our plan depends on all of us doing our part to respond with cooperation, patience and flexibility to the demands of our current situation. Gloucester Catholic is committed to safe, on-site, face-to-face learning. Our community will be called upon to embrace a spirit of shared Christian sacrifice and cooperation to keep our community safe and healthy. As always, we will walk together on this journey.

It is to be expected that as the pandemic continues to evolve, new guidance will demand that aspects of our plan may need to be adjusted. We will keep you all informed of any modifications as soon as possible. Our goal is to maintain the well-being, health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, as well as continue to offer the quality Catholic education that is our Gloucester Catholic tradition.

Thank you again for your cooperation, patience and flexibility. We look forward to the renewal of school life in September. Please continue to keep Gloucester Catholic in your prayers, as well as all those affected by COVID-19. Thank you again for your support.

  • The class of 2020 surely is a class that everyone will remember and automatically might feel sorry for – however, with the way Gloucester Catholic has brought us together, closer than before, I truly can’t help but be thankful and proud that I am a Ram and a graduate of the class of 2020. Back at our Mass of Thanksgiving a couple weeks ago, Principal Beckett told us to stand up and take a look around at one another, and only then did it hit me that we are graduated; we are going our separate ways. And in that silent, profound moment at Mass, I remembered every bit of high school.

I used to be incredibly shy (seriously, ask Mr. Langi, Mrs. Kelly, or Mrs. Murphy), and looking at pictures of me back in the Junior High makes me wonder how we are even the same person. I transferred from another school to the Junior High in 8th grade, and while it was a difficult decision, it was the best one. It was nerve-wracking and I was worried I wasn’t going to make any new friends or do well in school; however, Gloucester Catholic helped me face those fears, make friends with those who I know will always be in my life, and helped me attain and sustain First and Second Honors all four years of high school. Ever since I came to GC back in 8th grade, this school has never let me stumble or fall short of the person they saw me becoming – and for that, I thank you.

Gloucester Catholic made it easy for me to feel comfortable in my classes and not be shy to share my thoughts about certain subjects or ask for help when I needed it. Teachers normalize students asking for extra help when a subject is getting increasingly difficult for them, and the way they help the student builds their confidence. Also, the classes available are classes that certainly can start an interest in a career that a student never heard about – shout out to Ms. Lenny’s period 4 Forensic Science class! Swinging a bat at a dummy’s head to find the projectile of blood splatter will always be a fun time, especially with Ms. Leonhart. Gloucester Catholic also gave my classmates and I a look into the real world – college debt, checks and balances, car payments. Modern world classes like Personal Finance with Mr. Chrzanowski hold a level of importance in society and I’m grateful I was able to experience that class and learn some of the financial aspects of being an adult.

Gloucester Catholic has and always will be a family to me, and within families are traditions. Our GC traditions will always have a special place in my heart, especially the Bleacher Creatures, Thanksgiving Game versus Gloucester High, Homecoming, Kairos, Christmas Mass, ice hockey games, musicals, and many more. Going to these games and events embody what it is like to be a school that is a family, showing support for our classmates even after school is over.

Gloucester Catholic has helped me grow out of my comfort zone and go to events that I wouldn’t typically go to, forming new bonds and discovering a love for hockey! The main reason for me going to these sporting events or dances? My love and support for my school and the people in it.

Gloucester Catholic has truly helped me with my faith these past five years as I have seen a major improvement on my relationship with God. A big part of that would be the Kairos retreat, an extremely popular religious retreat at GC. I truly do believe that Kairos helps strengthen students’ relationship with God, and that is why it is such a sought-after retreat among Juniors and Seniors. Kairos allowed me to be real with myself and others. Teachers believed in me and encouraged me to be a Kairos leader, an ability I never saw in myself and didn’t even know I had. Being the rector on Kairos X was one of the biggest and most valuable opportunities of my life (thank you, Mrs. Quinn and Kairos directors) as I was able to relay the same effect it had on me when I went as a retreatant. Seeing and experiencing the change within someone as they grow closer to God is such a beautiful experience, and I hope every student has the chance to go. Again, Gloucester Catholic continues to do a wonderful job at changing lives for the better.

Another aspect of Gloucester Catholic that has always stayed consistent is the kindness from teachers, staff, and students alike. Because we spend so much time around one another, we do treat each other like a family would and should – with compassion, thoughtfulness, and generosity. The friends you make at Gloucester Catholic will be friends for life, and the same goes for the mere impact that GC will have on you. Everyone knows your name and who you are – especially Mr. Flynn. I will miss him yelling my last name whenever he sees me! The kindness you receive from everyone you interact with is so infectious and I truly believe no other school has the same energy that radiates from those GC halls.

Finally, as I said my goodbyes to my friends and teachers at our diploma handout and our Mass of Thanksgiving, I realized I wasn’t saying goodbye forever. Gloucester Catholic will always be at 333 Ridgeway Street and in my heart. The memories made there, the laughs shared with all my teachers and friends, those times I definitely spilled coffee somewhere, they will be the times I look back on whenever I’m feeling homesick. Thank you for all the lasting relationships made, the laughs that could be heard from Cumberland Street, and of course, the home away from home.

GRAND SLAM!GRAND SLAM! GC’s Philanthropy GC’s Philanthropy Weeks Exceeds All Expectations Thanks Weeks Exceeds All Expectations Thanks to Generous Donors!to Generous Donors!By Gus Ostrum, Director of Development

Gloucester Catholic's Philanthropy Week 2020? Just call it a grand slam as Ram alumni, friends and even current students rallied to make this past spring's event the most successful fund-raiser in school history!

And, the depth of generosity displayed by Ram alumni came during a crucial time in school history with the COVID-19 pandemic and its local restrictions spreading rapidly across the Delaware Valley this past spring.

"Our alumni, friends, and students answered Gloucester Catholic’s call and came through when we needed it most," said Joseph Calabro, Executive Director of Development. "We cannot express our gratitude enough in thanking our generous donors."

From late March through June, PW 2020 raised more than $166,000, which included 480 donations made to funds honoring the Class of 2020 along with a Principal's Emergency Relief Fund. That generosity was backed by a matching $25,000 donation from George Batavick '66, who has provided a match to this program three years in a row. Overall, proceeds from the PW 2020 campaign will support tuition assistance efforts for current students to attend Gloucester Catholic.

Another key element to the PW 2020 success was the emergence of younger alumni and even current students who supported the campaign most aggressively this year. They included proud GC grads such as sisters Kyleigh (Class of 2010) and Arianna (Class of 2012) Heins, along with current GC faculty member Rob Langi (Class of 2002).

"It feels great to give back to Gloucester Catholic," said Kyleigh Heins. "I love knowing that I may have helped another student to have the same kind of experience that I had. Gloucester Catholic’s emphasis on knowledge, faith, and loyalty is truly special and the atmosphere in the school is unmatched."

Not to be left out, her sister Arianna Heins -- a GC Junior High faculty member -- also contributed.

"From being a student at GC to now teaching in the Junior High, I have always witnessed first-hand how our community comes together to support its students," noted Arianna. "It means the world to me to be able to give back to a school that has influenced my academic, spiritual, and personal growth so much."

The sisters were also joined by mom Deborah Heins '81, GC's cheerleading coach for many years, who continued her generosity with her donations to the campaign!

Also joining in to help out was faculty member Mr. Rob Langi, who donated individually while helping to organize his fellow Class of 2002 grads to donate as well.

Said Mr. Langi: "Gloucester Catholic has been a part of my own life for over 20 years, as a young kid prior to high school, as a student for four years, and now as a faulty member for ten years. The family atmosphere that you have there is unlike anything else I have been a part of which is why myself and so many have chosen to give back to our second home.”

The Philanthropy Week tradition will continue during the Spring of 2021 as Ram alumni will one again step up the campaign to the next level. Watch for details in the near future!

Today we are going to share some good GC News Today we are going to share some good GC News about all the good about all the good things members of the GC Family things members of the GC Family are doing during the pandemicare doing during the pandemic• Senior Abigail McCrane got to work almost immediately, making face masks for people in need. Abbie said “I wanted to help because I know how easily this virus spreads, and how short supplied people are! My mom and I are blessed to have skills in sewing, so we wanted to do our part to help the community in these hard times!”

    • Abbie hasn’t been the only person working behind a sewing machine - our own Father Philip Ramos has taken up a new hobby in sewing face masks for the volunteers at the St. Vincent DePaul Society at his parish, St. Simon Stock in Berlin. You can join Father every day for daily mass at 9am livestreamed on our Facebook page

    • In honor of her 18th birthday, senior Taylor Moore decided rather than receive gifts she would rather give back to others. Taylor started a food collection drive and over the past two weekends she has collected nearly 500 nonperishable items! Taylor says “One of things I miss most about GCHS are the service hours. I heard a lot of people are without food so I started a food bank. I will be donating all items to St Marys parish food bank and the Boro of Brooklawn food bank.”

    • The Schenk Brothers - junior Andrew, and sophomore Robert have spent their free time away from distance learning to work with their father using their 3-D printer to make ear savers for frontline workers wearing n-95 masks all day and have been donating them to local workers.

    • Our alumni are getting in on the act too. Some good news from the class of 1999, Gina Vignola asked some of her co-workers at Independence Blue Cross to chip in for a two birds one stone idea that would help out a local restaurant and some hospital staff. The goal was to fund 100 meals so that a local restaurant would get a boost to their takeout orders for the day, and the meals would then be donated to feed frontline staff at an area hospital. Almost $12,000 later Gina has collected enough donations to fund 750 meals and fed the staff at 7 hospitals!

    • You may recognize one restaurant owner, Chris Fetfatzes! Chris is also a member of the 1999 graduating class and he and his wife Heather own and operate 4 restaurants in Philadelphia. Once Gina saw that Chris was up and running with takeout from his Hawthorne’s Café location she was putting in the order. Chris, along with all of the other chefs and restaurants, have put together some really amazing, healthy and hearty meals for these hospital staffers. The response from both the restaurants and the meal recipients has been really great, everyone is very excited to be included, and we are proud of our Ram Alumni for making it happen. • Chris also took part in a second round of meals on Cinco De Mayo with menu items from his perfectly matched South Street location – Tio Flores!

Chris LiscioChris LiscioI will be attending West Chester university and studying business marketing. I plan on pursuing a career in the marketing field either in the sports or food industry. Gloucester Catholic helped shape this choice by the many classes they offer to help students find a future career path. The class I took on sports and entertainment marketing helped me get a basis of the marketing industry. All of my teachers at Gloucester Catholic pushed me to be the best student I could be and helped prepare me to take the next step in life.

Jake NarvidJake NarvidI will be going to Tennessee to continue my swimming career and I will be studying accounting, with the hopes of entering law school when I am finished my undergraduate studies. GC made me enjoy math, and helped me with the art public speaking. Mr. Beckett made me feel that I could speak my opinion more comfortably than I ever thought possible. Mrs. Murphy made math enjoyable and gave me the skills that give me the confidence going forward. Lastly, all four of my English teachers made English come alive and seem more enjoyable than I realized it could be.

Will BellWill BellNext year, I will be attending the University of Virginia and plan on majoring in Computer Science and Economics. My goal is to get into a career involving finance and analytics. One of the teachers I feel helped prepare me for success at the next level is Mr. Reed. He had such a great knowledge of computers and helped convey it in an understandable way that made it really enjoyable!

After college, I plan on becoming a lawyer and pursuing my dream in entrepreneurship. Gloucester Catholic helped me shape my choice by providing me with the Education I needed to get into Colby college. All three of my English teachers throughout the years helped prepare me for college as well as Mrs. Turse. They all taught me the basic things I needed to learn in order to better my writing mechanics and grammar.

I have been a part of theatre since I was six years old in St. Mary’s School (Gloucester) Theatre Week program. I realized that acting was what I needed to do with my life when I was going into my Sophomore year, being at West Deptford Little Theatre, which I have been a part of the past 11 years. My goal is to eventually move to California and pursue my career as an actress in Hollywood and earn an Oscar or Emmy. Not only would I like to be in front of the camera, but behind the scenes as well. GC helped shape this choice of mine because of my role as Donna Sheridan in the spring musical Mamma Mia. The support and kind words I received the weeks following after the show are ones I will never forget and gave me confidence in my career goals.

Two teachers in particular from GC stand out to me. I initially did not have a creative outlet for my film making interests, but I decided to do something about that and collaborated with Mr. Langi. Together, we started GC’s first Film and Media Club using my camera. Not only has he been someone I trust but has been that teacher I have always turned to for advice and guidance, whether that was in the classroom or out. Mrs. Ziccardi is another teacher that I have always been very close with and could vent to about anything, knowing she would always have an open ear. She’s that teacher you can’t wait to share your personal good news with. Without these two influences during high school and junior high, these past six years at GC would have looked very different and I am extremely grateful for the impact they made on my experience.

Junior High AnniversaryJunior High AnniversaryIn August, 2011,in the wake of the closing of the beloved St. Mary’s Grammar School in Gloucester, Gloucester Catholic decided to try and carry on the great tradition of St. Mary’s by opening up Gloucester Catholic Jr. High for seventh & eighth graders. For ten years, under the exceptional guidance of Mrs. Mary Kelly, families have been offered a school featuring small class sizes, rigorous academics, and inspired and engaged teachers. With the school preparing to celebrate ten years, here is a look at some of the first ever graduates from Gloucester Catholic Junior High!

Madison Welsh Madison Welsh '16 I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood education and Special Education from Neumann University. I am currently living in West Deptford with my family and I’m in the process of applying for teaching positions! In addition to that I am a dance teacher at Tricia Sloan Dance Center in Wenonah where I choreograph for their shows, create competition pieces and teach some GC RAMS!

Post high school graduation I competed for Miss New Jersey 4 times, I began and finished my degree at Neumann University, I auditioned for several professional dance teams and I held many internships. None of that would have been possible if it weren’t for the people I met at the GC and the lessons that were instilled in me in and out of the classroom. Gloucester Catholic taught me that no matter what you have to believe in yourself, trust Gods plan

for you, and remember where you came from. If you can do those three things then you can accomplish anything.

To any current or incoming GC student; do not take for granted the years you have in those halls. You will miss the days that you can pop in to any teachers classroom just to say hi. You will miss the days you could turn the gym you play basketball in during free period to a spiritual place that you and your GC family can be together. You will miss your uniform and those shoes. It all goes really fast so take it all in and never forget… Once a Ram, always a Ram.

Ally Laskowski Ally Laskowski '16 Upon graduating from Thomas Jefferson University with a B.S. in Fashion Design in May 2020, I have accepted a job working at Abercrombie & Fitch’s HQ and will be relocating to Columbus, Ohio in August. My role at Abercrombie & Fitch is called an Assistant Apparel Tech. Designer.

One of my biggest take aways from my time at Gloucester Catholic was how valuable forming connections and relationships can in both a professional and personal way. The friendships made at GC are life long and have helped mold me into the person I am today. My best friends from high school are still my best friends today. This has carried into my professional life as the networking skills

I gained from my time in Gloucester Catholic directly resulted in getting multiple jobs over the years in my desired career field.

My advice to current GCHS students is to use all the resources you are given to create the future you want for yourself. I chose to go a more non traditional route in terms of profession but was encouraged by my peers and teachers to pursue my passion. This kind of support gave me the confidence and leadership skills to succeed going forward. Mrs. Ryder and Mrs. Morgan always motivated my peers and I to be the best versions of ourselves and held us to high standards which I appreciate to this day.

Jude Ferrigno Jude Ferrigno '21 As a Gloucester Catholic student, nothing has impressed me more than the staff’s ability to meet the COVID crisis head on and efficiently, effectively, and rapidly transform their entire curriculum to an online setting. Within the matter of three days, all of our classes smoothly transitioned to distance learning. While there were some early hiccups, both students and teachers worked together to iron out the wrinkles and create a system that catered to our student population, using some of the latest technology. Through the use of Zoom and Microsoft Teams, we were not only able to learn and be tested on the material in a way comparable to the classroom, but we were also able to recreate that classroom atmosphere in a virtual environment. We could engage in deep classroom discussions in English class during Zoom meetings while also being able to learn about complex scientific and mathematical laws and their applications through online lectures. At the same time, teachers used outside resources such as Khan Academy and Youtube to aid in our understanding of certain, difficult topics. Through the use of these systems, I was able to learn the new material and felt like my work actually mattered because it was graded and treated like work given in-person at school.

Throughout the last few tumultuous months, the Gloucester Catholic staff took the time to understand each student’s personal circumstances and cared about each and everyone of us. Extra time was given on assignments to those with conflicts in schedules; our workload was reasonable and not overbearing; teachers worked with us when there were problems with the online systems; and, everyone tried to keep an atmosphere of levity throughout the entire distance learning experience. We weren’t treated as just students in a classroom or names on an attendance sheet, but rather as people, equals. All of us, both student and teacher alike, braved this storm, together, as a Gloucester Catholic Family. While we may not have been in the brick and mortar of an actual building, we were still able to build a strong foundation of community founded on caring and trust. In the years to come, I know I will look back on these days at Gloucester Catholic as unique, not just because of COVID, but because of the empathetic and human approach demonstrated by my fellow students, the faculty, and staff.

Lauren Wethman Lauren Wethman '21 After several long months of being in quarantine, I certainly am ready to go back to school. I miss everything about GC – the students who have become my great friends, the teachers who never fail to help us, the buildings with so much character, and of course, the family atmosphere. It is crazy to think that one random school day in March was going to be my very last day of junior year. When social distancing and remote learning became the new “normal,” it made me realize how much I truly love GC. With everything going on, I felt as if a part of myself was missing – and it was. I have been getting more and more excited to go back to school as September gets closer. I couldn’t wait for my senior year of high school ever since I was a little girl. Senior year for my class is going to be especially memorable because we all went through many hardships when our junior year was cut short and powered through them. In fact, I am proud of each and every student for persevering through such a new and difficult time.

I am very much looking forward for the school year to begin. I cannot wait to see my friends and the faculty and staff. I cannot wait to be reunited with my second family at my second home. My junior year may have been cut short, but that certainly won’t stop me from making my senior year as memorable as it can be. As the fall draws near, I think about how I cannot wait to lead the volleyball team as captain, cheer on the football team, work with student council, dance the night away at homecoming, and so much more. Lastly, I would like to say that I am sorry to those who have been affected in any way by this pandemic. GC and I are praying for you. Remember that God is everywhere and doing everything He can for you!

Brad Reiter Brad Reiter '04 Saint Joseph’s University (B.S. Political Science); Rutgers University School of Law (J.D.) I am a Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey primarily handling construction litigation and contract disputes.

& Ashley Reiter (Chambers) & Ashley Reiter (Chambers) '04Saint Joseph’s University (B.S. Psychology, Minor in Faith Justice Studies); Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (M.S. Clinical Health Psychology) I am the Senior Clinical Research Coordinator for the Multiple Sclerosis Division of the Department of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania. I am in charge of all NIH and industry sponsor-related tasks for nearly two dozen MS clinical trials. I also conduct research visits with our MS patients.

Together, we live in Audubon, NJ with our 3-year-old daughter, Avery, and 8-month old son, Ben. GC instilled hard work and accountability. We were challenged to step outside our comfort zones and learned that trying new things often opens up previously unconsidered possibilities. GCHS also taught us the importance of creating and cultivating professional and personal relationships.

Step outside your comfort zone. Take advantage of all the extracurricular activities and differing perspectives GCHS offers. Who knows? You may find lifelong passions and friendships in places you never considered. GCHS is a family. Allow its values to influence you. Hold onto them and incorporate them into your future decision-making. Always remember that coming back to GCHS will feel like coming home.

Teacher who had a particular impact: Ed Beckett. Hands down. Ed taught us how to question, think critically, teach ourselves, and – most importantly – write. His thirst for knowledge and self-discovery is infectious. We owe all of our academic success following our years at GCHS to the lessons we learned in his classes. He turned out to be a major influence in our, individual, choices to attend the Jesuit university, Saint Joseph’s University. We are happy to report that we are still friends with Ed today, and our philosophical debates continue.

Andrew Steen Andrew Steen '14BS in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, The Ohio State University. I currently live in Seattle, Washington working as a Constellation Operations Engineer at BlackSky. On the most basic level, my job is to ensure the daily and long-term operations of a fleet of small imaging satellites in low Earth orbit. My team is tasked with directly interfacing with the spacecraft either through manual or person-in-the-loop semi-autonomous commanding, reviewing health telemetry and system messages downlinked from the fleet, responding to anomalous behavior on-orbit, developing procedures for safely & sustainably building the constellation through frequent launches, and much more. It’s a truly interesting and often intimidating job where I can eagerly apply the engineering concepts I learned in school, and develop new knowledge with my small, dynamic team.

I have for about 6 years now been highly active in the space & aerospace community, having been luckily able to travel to multiple countries on several continents sharing & developing research, and advocating for equitable and sustainable global cooperation for space. It is my passion and my vocation, and I can’t see myself in any other line of work. In my free time I’ve been having a blast exploring the natural attractions in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, trying new foods, meeting new people, and making new memories. It’s no New Jersey, but it has its perks.

Gloucester Catholic forced me to develop a confident perspective on who I am and who I want to be. I like to describe GC as this awesomely loud and aggressive place where you have no choice but to become the most extreme version of yourself. For me, this was becoming my geeky self and being damn proud of it. Beyond that though, I was introduced to new types of confidence in myself, and began to seek out new experiences with music and sports. I tried out for the lacrosse team in 2012, having spent all summer training with Jeff DeAngelis. In the one weekend of tryouts I lost about 25 pounds and damn near died of heat exhaustion. I was by a long shot not the best player, but I was hugely welcomed into the team and I learned further how important it is to be encouraged to seek out new experiences and continue to build a better version of yourself.

The other most important thing GC instilled in me is just how important it is to be a part of a community. I still am close to a lot of my friends from Gloucester Catholic, and I’m always excited to catch up with people who I’ve not talked to in a long time. That sort of closeness and love is hard to come by, and should be cherished.

This is a pretty common answer I’m sure for Rams as far back as 1970, but Mr. Nark was an awesomely motivating teacher for me. Not before than and only once since have I met a teacher willing to put so much of themselves into their lessons. Mr. Nark was an awesome teacher not because he knew chemistry like he knew the back of his hand, but Mr. Nark was an awesome teacher becausehe knew how to get people interested in the most foreign concepts on Earth. For one thing, leave your comfort zone and don’t look back. Go join the school play, or a debate team, or make a fool of yourself at one of the coffee house concerts, or start your own thing. You’ll regret only playing sports and not meeting people outside your circle. You for sure have no idea who you are going to be in 5 or 10 or 15 years. I certainly had no idea who I’d be at 24 when I was in Mrs. Heim’s Pre-Calc class or Mr. Nark’s Chem class in 2012. Don’t assume you’ll be the same person even a year from today, so don’t do your future self the disservice of not exploring what you’re good at, and what you enjoy. It’s really strange trying to think of advice to give 14-18 year old since I’m only 24. But probably the best piece of advice I can give anyone getting through high school is to only look back on your past with nostalgia, and at your future with excitement.

Gloucester Catholic mourns the passing of two Rams sports legends this past summer in former MLB pitcher Bob Sebra '80 and former Athletic Director, Coach, and standout athlete Joe Murphy '54.

Sebra, who pitched for the Phillies, Expos and Rangers during the 1980s, passed away on July 22 near his home in Florida. He was a key member of the Rams’ unbeaten 1980 team, considered the greatest in South Jersey history and one that posted a perfect 24-0 record. The former fireballing pitcher reunited with his GC 1980 teammates during the squad's induction into the Gloucester County

Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. It marked the first time in nearly 40 years that the team had reunited.

Coach Joe Murphy, who died on August 2, was a legendary South Jersey football coach in the 1960s who later served as an Assistant Coach at Penn under former Eagles President Harry Gamble in the 1970s. In recent years Coach Murphy served as President of the Camden County Sports Hall of Fame and as a long-time member of Gloucester Catholic's Alumni Association Board.
