Summer at Saint Francis provides a broad range of academic and athletic programs for elementary through high school students. It is the goal of every program to make summer vacation both enriching and enjoyable for our students. This catalog includes details and registration information for every program. Please register online at www.sfhs.com starting the first week of February 2014.

Page 6 – 7The Freshman Experience for admitted and enrolled Saint Francis freshmenThis program is designed exclusively for our newest Lancers. You will meet your classmates and explore the campus before school officially begins. The coursework in this program is designed to prepare you for Saint Francis classes in a creative and interactive style.

Page 8 – 9High School Curriculum for students entering 8th – 12th grade from any schoolStudents interested in taking a summer class for credit or enrichment will find that our high school curriculum is a perfect fit. In addition to our traditional college prep curriculum, we also offer SAT, SAT Subject Exam and Spanish 3 preparation courses.

Page 10 – 11Sports & Activity Camp for youngsters ages 6 – 12 from any schoolThis all sports camp provides group instruction in a variety of field, water and track games. Saint Francis faculty and students staff the camp, and the focus is always on fun. The program is dedicated to teaching teamwork, sportsmanship and positive self-esteem.

Page 12 – 14Advanced Sports Camps for students entering 4th – 9th grade from any schoolWe offer a wide selection of advanced sports camps designed to provide players with the opportunity to improve both their skill and knowledge of a specific sport. Each camp is run by a Head Varsity Coach at Saint Francis, and is staffed by members of the coaching staff.

Registration All registration is online. Online registration will begin the first week of February 2014 at www.sfhs.com/summer

Refund Policy for all Summer Programs The last day to withdraw from all programs is May 30, 2014. After this date, refunds will not be provided. Refunds will be processed on the 1st and 15th of every month. A $100 fee per high school withdrawal, a $50 fee per MS/afternoon activity, and a $50 per sports/advanced camp cancellation fee per camp/class withdrawal will be deducted from all tuition refunds. Refund requests must be submitted in writing or by email ([email protected]) to the summer school office — no exceptions will be made to this policy.

Middle School CampsOpen to students entering 6th - 8th grade from any schoolMorning Camps $400 per session8:30 a.m. – 12:00 noonSession 1: June 16 – 27Session 2: June 30 – July 11 (July 4 holiday)

Our Middle School Camps offer 6th, 7th, and 8th graders an enriching and exciting way to spend the summer. Campers will make new friends, get a feel for our school and campus, meet Saint Francis teachers, and have fun while strengthening their academic and artistic skills. Students enroll in one program per session. The curriculum is hands on, project based, and engaging. Ceramics Session 2Ceramics is an introductory level camp that focuses on clay exploration. Students will learn core clay building methods, including pinch, slab and throwing on the wheel. Each camper will leave the summer workshop with multiple projects and an appreciation and understanding of basic artistic principles.Exploratory Language Arts Session 2Sixth grade students will immerse themselves in poems and short stories, learning about various literary devices. They will learn to perfect their paragraph format and brush up on the grammar basics. The 7th grade campers will study the history of drama and plays, reading and acting out the classics. Analytical writing and punctuation will be emphasized, as students explore their creative writing skills. Lastly, our 8th grade program will strengthen the students’ powers of persuasion through argumentative writing. With an emphasis on non-fiction readings, campers will explore the lives of influential 20th century individuals and learn the essentials of polished writing. In addition, all grade levels will work on expanding vocabulary.Integrated Math, Science & Computers Session 1 & 2In our 6th grade camp, students will study the statistics of sports and finance and conduct survey-based research. They will explore the biology, chemistry and physics of common beverages and learn skills for Internet research and PowerPoint presentations. 7th grade campers will design and construct a scale model using geometric solids and basic architectural concepts. They will discover ways of creating renewable energy and learn how to use Photoshop as a presentation tool. Our 8th grade program introduces students to number theory, pattern recognition and code breaking. Students will examine Newton’s Laws of motion through experiments and learn introductory website design. Musical Theater Session 1Actors, singers and dancers will flourish in a high-energy environment with our renowned drama director and current Saint Francis students. After a week of exploring different theater mediums and perfecting performance skills, camp culminates with a showcase performance and reception, open to all friends and family members. Mock Trial & Debate Session 1Students will learn an introductory skill set for both mock trial and debate. The camp curriculum is split, week one will be spent on mock trial basics, including what the program is about and key argumentation tactics. In week two, students will explore various types of debate formats and learn strategies for research and presentation. This camp is for all levels, and students will be split into sub-groups based upon ability levels.

Advanced Rhetoric and Debate Session 1 & 2This class serves as an introduction to debate at the high school level. Students will learn the basics of value debate in the Lincoln-Douglas format and limited prep formats.

Fine Arts Session 1 & 2Fine arts is a basic exploration of art and design. Students will learn how to use the elements and principles of art to create aesthetically pleasing work. They will explore many techniques and methods of the art making process, and will do so through the use of mediums such as oil pastels, color pencils, paint and acrylic medium.

High School Entrance Exam Prep Session 1 & 2This class prepares students for the high school entrance exam for Catholic high schools (HSPT). Students learn what to expect on the exam, review the material covered on the exam, and discover how to apply testing strategies during the exam.

Photography Session 1 & 2Digital Photography will cover the basic principles of photography and explain the three building blocks of light, time and subject. Students will explore the many artistic choices you make when you take a photograph. They will learn about cameras, lenses and filters, and finally, how to bring the photograph into Photoshop, enhance it, prepare it for printing and print it.

Writing Workshop Session 1 & 2This course is focused on expository and creative writing. Utilizing literary excerpts, students will hone their grammar skills, perfect the paragraph structure and develop their thesis and essay writing expertise. The creative projects will inspire imagination and encourage self-expression. Editing and revising will be stressed as integral parts of the writing process. Students will be split into grade appropriate levels.

9TH G RADEThe Freshman ExperienceOpen to admitted and enrolled Saint Francis freshmen June 16 – July 11 (July 4 holiday) 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon $600

Specially designed for the incoming class of 2018, The Freshman Experience is the perfect opportunity for our newest Lancers to acclimate to social and academic life at Saint Francis. Whether enrolling for educational enrichment, or for review, students have the chance to build a diverse and interactive course schedule, engage with our wonderful Saint Francis teaching staff, and form friendships with their incoming classmates. Historically, over half of the freshman class has transitioned to Saint Francis through this program. Matriculation is limited to admitted and enrolled students.

Basic Fine Arts ExplorationThis course presents students with a range of art mediums and techniques in order to demonstrate the principals and theories of art.

Computer LiteracyThis course introduces students to the computer and how it works. The course will teach skills in word processing, database, presentation and spreadsheet applications. Students will fulfill the computer literacy graduation requirement upon passing the competency test at the completion of this course.

The Freshman Experience

Introduction to AlgebraThis course will review basic mathematics and introduce elementary algebra skills. Students who would like to prepare for the freshman year of algebra should enroll in this class.

Introduction to GeometryThis course will review algebra and introduce elementary geometry skills. Students who would like to prepare for the freshman year of geometry should enroll in this class.

Introduction to French 1This class emphasizes speaking and familiarizes students with the spoken language. The curriculum covers grammar basics and tips to be successful in French 1.

Introduction to Spanish 1This class emphasizes speaking and familiarizes students with the spoken language. The curriculum covers grammar basics and tips to be successful in Spanish 1.

Leadership SkillsThe basic premise of this class is to give an introductory glance at the ethos behind a Catholic Holy Cross Education, including the historyofHolyCrossandourBRICthemesofintegrity,family,hope and respect. The goal of the course is to instill some basic sense of what strong, ethical student leadership at the high school level entails.

Reading & WritingThis course covers the summer reading assignments for freshmen. Students will develop skills in comprehension, analysis and discussion. In addition, the course provides students with an introduction to high school writing focusing on mechanics, voice, imagery, description and organization. Students will be expected to complete homework for this class.

Speech & Debate This class serves as an introduction to public speaking. Students will participate in limited preparation and prepared platform speeches including extemporaneous, improptu and persuasive speeches. Students will also participate in debates with limited preparation in the last week.

Study Skills/OrientationThis class will review note taking, outlining, memory and test-taking techniques to help students in their high school classes. The class will also provide an overview of “life at Saint Francis.”

The classes can be taken for enrichment, remediation or for credit. If you plan to enroll in the second semester of a course without taking the first semester in summer school, please be certain that youhavemasteredthefirstsemestermaterial.Beadvisedthatthesecond semester of these courses begins without review. Any Saint Francis High School Algebra 2 student who had a solid “A” for the first semester is invited to take a one-semester Trigonometry course this summer. In order to remain eligible for this program, students are required to maintain a solid “A” in Algebra 2 through the entire year. Invitations will be extended to eligible students through their individual Algebra 2 teacher after the 12-week grading period second semester. Second semester 12-week grades will be re-verified at the end of second semester. Only students that finish both first and second semester with the letter mark “A” will be allowed to enroll in this summer course.

6 – 12 YEARS

After CAmp CAre progrAm The Saint Francis High School Sports and Activity Camp is pleased to offer an After Camp Care Program from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Parents who cannot pick up their youngster up at 2:30 p.m. and wish to utilize the After Camp Care program may do so at a cost of $125 per week. The After Camp Care will provide arts and craft materials, books, movies and a collection of games, as well as an afternoon snack. Parents can pick up their child any time between 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

After CAmp SWIm LeSSoNS Saint Francis High School Sports and Activity Camp will offer swim lessons after camp each day. Lessons will be offered at four levels* at two different sessions. Student/teacher ratio will be 6:1.

Lesson packages include five consecutive lessons of 30 minutes each, taught between the hours of 2:45 - 3:45 p.m.

Lesson packages are $60.00 per swimmer, and include a skills evaluation sheet for each camper. You must attend the Sports Camp during the same time period as the swim lessons. No adjustments can be made when you register for swim lessons. Swim lessons are offered only during the following time slots listed below.

Times: You may sign up for a preferred swim time but space is reserved on a first come first served basis.

CAmp pHILoSopHYThe Saint Francis Sports and Activity Camp has been structured to provide each youngster with a variety of learning experiences. Our goal is to give group and individual instruction in a number of sports, while also teaching teamwork and good sportsmanship . The staff of the Sports and Activity Camp will work diligently to provide an active learning environment, while also emphasizing the positive development of each youngster’s self-esteem.

StAffThe staff of the Saint Francis Sports and Activity Camp will consist of Saint Francis High School faculty, area college athletes, and Saint Francis High School students. All sports instruction will be given by Saint Francis faculty members or qualified college athletes.

LUNCHLunch is provided each day for the entire camp. If you prefer to pack a lunch for your child, you may do so. (Lunch vegetarian option is limited to peanut butter and jelly).

morNINg SWIm LeSSoNS oNLYSaint Francis High School will offer one week morning swim lessons from June 16 to July 11. Lessons will be offered at four levels* at two different sessions. Lessons will have a max student/teacher ratio of 6:1.

Lesson packages include five consecutive lessons of 30 minutes each, taught between the hours of 10:45am - 12 p.m.

Sports & Activity Camp

Swim Lesson Levels*Beginner (Level I)Prerequisite: Child must be comfortable in the water without a parent and able to swim a short distance (5 yards, horizontal, face and eyes down) with splashy kicks.

What they will learn: Swimming and breathing without the assistance of fins. Arm stretching techniques in preparation for freestyle and the back stroke kicking and body positioning. The child is ready for the next level when she/he can swim on stomach and back without 12 1/2 yards.

Novice (Level II)Prerequisite: Child must be able to swim unassisted on front and back for 12 1/2 yards

What they will learn: Over the water arm recovery, side breathing, backstroke arms. The child is ready for the next level when he/she can swim freestyle w/ side breathing, backstroke for 12 1/2 yards each. Tread water for 30 seconds.

Intermediate (LEVEL III)Prerequisite: Child must be able to swim freestyle w/ side breathing and Backstroke for 12 1/2yards.

What they will learn: Fine tune freestyle and backstroke, learn breaststroke and dolphin kick. The child is ready for the next level when she/he can complete 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke (w/glide) and dolphin kick. Tread water for 60 seconds.

Advance (LEVEL IV)Prerequisite: Complete 25 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke (w/glide) and dolphin kick.

What they will learn: Racing starts, flip turns, basic competition workout knowledge.

All camp participants will learn offensive and defensive techniques, and the camp will culminate with a 7 on 7 passing game. The camp is a non-contact camp, but participants will wear both shoulder pads and helmets.

The SFHS Cheerleading Camp offers each camper a dynamic and active environment. This camp provides an opportunity to learn a crowd pleasing dance routine, as well as general motivating cheers. Instruction on arm positions, basic jumps and simple stunts will be taught during this fun-filled one week camp.
