Join us for the summer adventure of alifetime! Summer at Sandy Spring is anACA-accredited camp that crafts amazingsummer experiences for kids age 3 upthrough 12th grade.

In 20 years we’ve learned a few things:

• Kids prefer swimming ponds to videogames.

•A side portion of academic enrichmenthelps them keep their minds in shape forSeptember.

• They would rather learn and run andlaugh than do almost anything else.

We build on that free spirit and creativeenergy, and that’s why kids love Summerat Sandy Spring. Our campers splash andplay in the swimming pond, experiment inart and performances, learn teamworkwhile rock climbing, and change

communities through service projects.Every program promotes teamwork, friendship, and most importantly, a safeenvironment to have fun!

We also design our programming withboth kids and parents in mind.Withextended hours, before- and after-campcare, daily transportation to and from avariety of DC and Baltimore metro arealocations and eclectic programming, finding an experience that suits your needsis easy!

Discover our 140 acres of possibilities onthe wooded campus of the Sandy SpringFriends School (SSFS) located in the heartof Montgomery County!

It’s all too easy to feel outof touch with nature.

But whether you live in anurban or rural setting, near astand of woods or in the forest, there are trees near you that canhelp you feel connected to theoutdoors. And getting involvedwith protecting your state’swoods is easy if you know how.“From volunteer projects tocivic engagement, there aremany avenues for protectingyour state’s trees and forests,”said Jim Karels, president of theNational Association of StateForesters. “Any individual canhave a positive impact.”Karels has a few suggestionsfor effective woodland stew-ardship:• Many forests are under attackfrom the emerald ash borer, theAsian long-horned beetle and ahost of other non-native spe-cies. Learning to identify thesewoodland pests and the signsof their impact can help keeptheir damage in check. Preventdestructive hitchhikers by buy-ing local firewood from within10 miles of where you burn it.• Become a conservation vol-unteer and help your state’swoods. Plant a tree or checkout Arbor Day opportunitiesin your community, such astree plantings and litter pick-ups—or better yet, host oneyourself. Your state forestryagency should have a calendarof events to reference.• Appreciate urban forestry.Even if you live in a suburbanor urban locale, your commu-nity’s green infrastructure war-rants protecting. The presence of street trees ina neighborhood can increasethe sale prices of houses.Additionally, research hasshown that tree-lined streetsencourage more active life-styles, which can help reducethe incidence of obesity in yourcommunity.

• Learn to protect your homeand family from fire. Nearly nine

out of 10 wildfires are caused bypeople, and your state forestry

agency is a great resource forfire prevention education.• Spread the word. Our nation’swoodlands face many threatsthat require larger policy solu-tions. From invasive speciesto increasing land fragmenta-tion, all woodlands need pro-tection. Trees work for us andprovide public benefits to allAmericans. Connect with yourState Forester for ways to beinvolved in policy solutions thatare important to your state.
