Turris Fidelis AwardThe Turris Fidelis key may be awarded to not more than two graduating seniors at spring commencement. Students who have graduated since the previous spring semester as well as those planning to graduate in the spring will be considered candidates for the award. The award is made on the basis of outstanding service to the University and scholastic achievement. This honor is the highest that can be conferred upon a graduating senior, and recipients are selected by a joint committee of faculty and students.

Keller KeyThe Keller Key award was established as a memorial to the late President James Albert and Mrs. Mariglen Keller. A Keller Key is presented at each commencement to the honor graduate who, on the basis of having earned all credits for the bachelor’s degree at this University, has made the highest grade point average. The recipient is identified by the Registrar’s Office in accordance with established guidelines. For this purpose, all academic work ever attempted at UNA will be included in the calculation of the GPA. A student may receive the award only once even though more than one degree may be earned.

USHERSUsher services are provided by members of the LaGrange Society, the official host and hostess group of the University. As official student ambassadors, members of the LaGrange Society perform a vital mission for the University of North Alabama. Working closely with the Office of Admissions, they serve as campus tour guides for prospective students and assist with recruiting events. They also provide support at presidential receptions and many other University-sponsored functions. Further, since the organization is a primary sponsor of the Leo III and Una Fund, its members work to raise support for UNA’s mascots by collecting donations at all UNA home football games.

The CEREMONIAL MACEThe ceremonial mace, representing the authority of t h e p r e s i d e n t and trustees of the Univers i ty, is carried at the head of academic p r o c e s s i o n a l s . Since the Middle Ages, maces have been regarded as symbols of authority, and their use in academic ceremonies goes back to the founding of universities many centuries ago.

PLEASE NOTE: The listing of a name in this program should not be construed as an indication that the person will in fact receive a degree from the University of North Alabama at this commencement. Conversely, the absence of a student’s name from this list does not necessarily mean that the person will not be awarded a degree. This list is offered for convenience and is not intended as a representation that the persons listed have completed the qualifications necessary for a degree.

The ceremonial mace of the University of North Alabama was created in 1992 by Mr. Thomas Murray, who turned the shaft on a lathe, and Emeritus Professor of Art, Mr. Al C. Hausmann, who carved the head and the seal. The shaft and head of the mace are solid walnut, and the seal of the University is a hand-carved mahogany disk set into the head. The leaves encircling the seal are symbolic of the laurel wreath of learning. The ceremonial mace was a gift to the University from the late Dr. Frank B. Mallonee, Professor of Political Science, in September 1992.

The COLLEGE BANNERSUniversities in Europe and America have long used flags and banners in their academic ceremonies. Each banner is made of purple satin fabric and carries the university seal superimposed on it along with the name of each college. The banner is carried at the head of the faculty of each college.

The PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLIONThe presidential medallion is an ancient symbol of authority, the chain of

office worn by the head of a university which signifies the institution’s charter and right to confer honors. The University of North Alabama commissioned

the creation of a presidential medallion in 2005 as a symbol of office. The medallion itself bears the seal of the

institution, and the links on the adjoining chain are engraved individually with the names of the nineteen presidents of this institution (dating back to 1830) and the names of the four

academic colleges within the University. The medallion is worn on academic and ceremonial occasions by

those who serve the University of North Alabama as president, and will be passed on to each new

president to symbolize the transfer of office.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERMARGARET H. “PEGGY” BERGERON

2019 ELEANOR P. GAUNDER PHI KAPPA PHI EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD RECIPIENT; ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF NURSING

Dr. Peggy Bergeron was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as the youngest of five children. Her father was in the U.S. Army, which led their family of seven to move to a new location every three years. She attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Peggy was the first person in her family to graduate from a four-year college.

As a Registered Nurse, Peggy first worked in maternity and the idea of family centered care is one of the main reasons that she was drawn to work in this area. In 1997, she married Wayne Bergeron, who was stationed at Fort Bragg as a Captain in the U.S. Army. Her moves with Wayne to various military assignments enabled Peggy to work in a variety of nursing areas that included pediatrics, nursery, operating room, and post anesthesia care unit.

Peggy and Wayne moved their family from Stuttgart, Germany, to Florence, Alabama, in 2007 for their last military assignment when Wayne was named the Professor of Military Science for the University of North Alabama. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Army, he joined the UNA faculty where he teaches criminal justice and emergency management courses. Peggy also began working at UNA in fall 2007 as a nurse in University Health Services.

In pursuit of graduate degrees, Peggy received her Master of Science in Nursing, Teaching Track degree from UNA in 2010. In 2012, she joined the College of Nursing faculty and soon began work on a doctoral degree. She received her Ph.D. from The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2017.

Peggy and Wayne have three children: Josh, 27, a newspaper editor in Salisbury, North Carolina; Lauren, 17, a senior at Florence High School; and Connor, 16, a junior at Florence High School. Peggy enjoys reading, painting, and spending time on the water either kayaking or boating.
