On behalf of the 200 Rotarians who have given their time and talent to provide you with this amazing Rotary Youth Exchange experience, I welcome you to the CSRYE summer conference, and congratulate on the greatest decision of your life – becoming an RYE student, or encouraging your son or daughter to participate!

We have structured this year’s conference to provide you a mix of inspiring messages, practical information and smaller-group discussion. We are happy to have as our special guest our current Rotary International President, Ian Riseley from Australia. President Ian is a great supporter of Rotary Youth Exchange; it is a program in which he has volunteered for many years.

Whether you are an outbound preparing to embark on the greatest adventure of your life, an inbound about to leave for home or a rebound who has just returned from a year filled with amazing experiences, we have prepared sessions to help you cope with the changes you’re about to face, what we call “culture shock” and “reverse culture shock.” And we have special breakouts for parents, because the youth exchange experience affects them as much as their children.

If you have any questions, please talk with one of our ambassadors (yellow shirts) or Rotary volunteers – they’re here to help. At the conclusion of the conference, you’ll receive, via email, a survey. I hope you will take a few minutes to provide us with your feedback. It helps us as we design next year’s event. Finally, please tag all of your social media posts and pics with #csrye17 so everyone can see what’s happening across the Calvin College campus.

Have a GREAT conference!Bruce Goldsen, 2016 Summer Conference chair

WELCOME & THANK YOU!

Welcome to each and every one of you! When I connect with my inbound students, I ask

them if they are excited yet! Are you excited??Outbounds, this is your final orientation before you

take the journey that will be “the best year of your life”! For parents, this is your opportunity to meet and talk with other Outbound parents and Rebound parents who can share all sorts of experiences and knowledge about their student’s experiences.

For our Rebounds, we say “Welcome Home!” We ask you to share your knowledge and experiences that you gained with our Outbounds. For our Inbounds…this conference is one where we all share your excitement of “going home” but also your mixed emotions of leaving your “other home,” America and Canada. We are proud of you for taking the challenge of leaving your own country to spend a year with us in Central States.

We are pleased to welcome Rotary International President Ian Riseley. A month ago, Ian addressed close to 400 youth exchange officers, ROTEX and others involved with Rotary Youth Exchange and explained how this is one of Rotary’s finest programs….one that fosters world peace and understanding. This is the program from which Rotary will find its future members and leaders. This is the program where the world will find its peacemakers.

Enjoy the energy, the enthusiasm, and the excitement! It’s contagious!

A message from CSRYEChairman Don Moore

Jonathan Paley is celebrating his 26th year as a Rebound, and is still re-adapting to his native culture. A shy teenager but eager to see more of the world and become a global citizen, he was an Outbound RYE student from Amsterdam, NY (D7190) to Novo Horizonte, SP, Brazil (D4480). Having [mostly] recovered from reverse culture shock and no longer so shy but still curious how the universe works, Jonathan received his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Physics from Drew University in 1997, and his Ph.D. in Experimental Particle Physics from Boston University in 2004.

He experienced culture shock yet again when he moved, along with his wife, Laura, from the East Coast to the Midwest to take the next step in his career as a postdoctoral researcher in the Physics Department at Indiana University. It was there that Jonathan joined Rotary in 2005, and immediately got involved with the D6580 RYE. He was co-Chair of the D6580 RYE program from 2008-2010.

Jonathan and Laura now live in Lisle, Ill. He is a scientist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., where he designs, builds and analyzes data from high-energy particle physics experiments. His research is aimed at understanding the nature of the elusive neutrino which may ultimately explain why the universe is made of matter (instead of anti-matter or no matter at all!). Although Laura and their two children, Theo (7) and Beatrix (3), are the center of his universe, Jonathan does his best to give back to his community and to the organization that changed his life when he was 16. He was president of the Lisle Rotary Club in D6450 from 2012-13 and is still very active in the club.

Rotary has been involved in youth ex change for a long time. However, prior to 1972, any exchange was essentially a District to District exchange. In the late 1960s and early '70s, Dis tricts 6290 and 6440 cooperated in a joint program. And those two dis tricts would involve yet another district, 6560, in sharing students and opportunities. In February of 1972, eight District Governors from the Great Lakes area formed the Central States Rotary Youth Exchange Program, Inc. From the original eight Ro ta ry Dis tricts, the program has grown to in clude 18 Districts in the states of Illinois, In di ana, Michigan, part of Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and On tario, Canada. More than 850 Rotary clubs are represented by the Central States Rotary Youth Ex change Program.

The first chairman and one of its founding fathers was Lawrence Meyering (Laurie). He was chair man from 1972-1976. Bob Shoemaker then became the chairman and served Central States for the next 12 years. In 1988, vice chairman and fel low founding father, Bob Brickman, took over the chairmanship. Bob Hosch was chairman from 1992 until 1998. Other chairmen have been Don Mayo (1998-2003), John Weting (2003-07), Bill Lair (2007-11) and Dave Smith (2011-2015). Don Moore began his term as chairman in October 2015.

Central States Rotary Youth Exchange Program, Inc.

Over the years the success of this program is the result of the quality of leadership in Central States and the supreme dedication of the District Chairs, Correspondents, and District Governors, both within the U.S., Can a da, and overseas. They are united in their efforts to provide students with the most mem o ra ble year of their lives, hoping one day that this experience may contribute to the ultimate goal of world understanding and peace.

CONFERENCE GUIDELINESAs Rotarians, we don't enjoy following rules any more than students do. Yet, if we are going to successfully con duct a conference in volv ing more than 1,200 people, ad her ence to certain rules is necessary. The Rotarians in volved in this pro gram are not here to serve as po lice men, and yet it is some times necessary for a Ro tar ian to act to en force the rules. If you are breaking them you should expect to be con fronted. Each Dis trict Chair and the Ser geant-At-Arms bears the major re spon si bil ity for en forc ing the following rules at the con fer ence:1. Lodging has been arranged by Dis trict. Com pu ter ized print outs are main tained by your District Chair and the conference staff. Stu dents and Adults will be housed in the same area. Girls are not to enter boys rooms, nor are boys to enter girls rooms at any time, day or night for ANY REASON. So cial iz ing can be conducted on first floor lobbies during approved hours.2. Please be prompt for the meetings. It is a waste of man power to have to remind stu dents and adults fre quently to move to the meetings rooms. Time has been al lo-cated to re new friend ships and discuss ex pe ri ences, and please be con sid er ate of oth ers by being on time for ses sions, as they will be start ing on time. You must attend all scheduled meetings.3. Students are to be in their dorms by 12:30am and are expected to be quiet so as not to disturb oth ers who are trying to sleep. You will not be al lowed to return to a building after curfew to recover for got ten property.4. We will occupy the Calvin College Cam pus and its fa cili ties through the gra cious good will of its man age ment at an extremely rea son able cost. Ev ery one is expected to treat the property with con sid era tion, including avoid ance of any dam age and re frain ing from remov ing any prop erty be long ing to the buildings.5. The use of any alcoholic bev er ages and drugs is pro hib ited.6. There will be no smoking in any of the buildings, meet ing rooms or dorms.7. Everyone registered at the conference is ex pected to be at all scheduled sessions.8. Keep your rooms locked when un oc cu pied.9. Keep track of per sonal be long ings and WEAR NAME BADGES at all times. 10. Rebound & Rotex students who have driv en to the conference must lock their ve hicle and leave it dur ing the conference. They may not take it off cam pus during the con fer ence.11. NO FLAGS, other than the conference flags, are per mit ted in the General Session. Each coun try's flag is represented in the Fine Arts Center. Per sonal flags displayed with out au thoriza tion from the conference staff will be con fis cated and returned at the con clu-sion of the conference.12. Please remain quiet and courteous during the ses sions as a matter of respect to the speaker and to others who want to hear. Stu dents will not be allowed to leave Calvin College during the conference. Please TURN OFF CELL PHONES OR PUT THEM ON VIBRATE during general sessions and breakout meetings.NOTICE: We will not hesi tate to ter mi nate a stu dent from the Youth Exchange Pro gram for rule violations. This could mean being re turned to your native country or perhaps prevented from de part ing if you are an out bound stu dent. BE SURE TO TURN IN YOUR ROOM KEYS AT THE END OF THE CON FER ENCE!

HOW TO HELP -- BE A HOST FAMILY!Now that your son or daughter has been exposed to Rotary Youth

Exchange, why not consider being a host family for an Inbound?Host families come in all shapes and sizes. They can be Rotarians or

non-Rotarians, and may include young children, older children, or no children at all.

You already know something about Rotary Youth Exchange as the parent of an Outbound, so help us keep the program moving by offering to host. Just talk to the Rotary counselor you and your student worked with. Or mention it to one of your district youth exchange committee members here this weekend. They can help you get started.

Another way to help is by becoming a Rotarian yourself. We love Rotary Youth Exchange, but Rotarians also do so much more in their communities and throughout the world. We need more people who are interested in service and in making the world a more peaceful place. There are many Rotarians here this weekend. We will be happy to discuss Rotary and Rotary Youth Exchange with you.

Thanks for being part of Rotary! Have a great weekend!

RYE Alumnus Speaker Kirsten Melaas-Swanson

Kirsten spent the last year as a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Zimbabwe. She was sponsored by the River Cities/Hampton/Rapids City/Port Byron Rotary Club and District 6420

In high school, Kirsten was very active. Among other activities, she was vice president of the school's Interact Club, a high school organization sponsored by Rotary.

"I got interested in Rotary Youth Exchange at RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)," she said. "An exchange representative and former exchange students told us about exchange opportunities. They inspired me to go to new places and learn about new cultures."

"In her prime, my mom was a big traveler," Kirsten said. Her mother passed away several years ago. "She traveled all over Europe. She is the reason for my love of traveling and one of my motivations. I want to follow in her footsteps and learn and teach the community about the cultures of the world."

Courtney “Drew” Drew is the Analysis and Preconventions Specialist for the Programs for Young Leaders team. She works with the Rotaract, Interact and Youth Exchange Committees in coordinating their related Preconventions. Drew is also the survey master for Rotaract and Youth Exchange, developing, sending, and analyzing programmatic surveys to aid the growth and development of RI programs for young leaders.

Drew’s superpowers include writing, speak-ing, and training on topics she cares most about: LGBTQ advocacy, leadership development, and inclusivity. She loves her partner, cats, live

music, and cycling.

PERSPECTIVES FOR PARENTS

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children.

And he said:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of to mor row, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Districts within Central States may nominate a student for a Robert W. Shoemaker Jr. Scholarship. Guidelines and an application form are included in the Central States Rotary Youth Exchange Policy Manual and on the Central States website, www.csrye.org.

Our initial fundraiser was a drawing for a quilt held at the 2005 CSRYE Summer Conference, which raised almost $1,500. Since then we have received donations from Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, districts and memorials. Special gifts have included those in memory of Pastor Richard Kimmer and in memory of Paula Eaton, whose daughter was a Rotary Youth Exchange student.

In 2009, following the death of Marg Bird, the spouse and Rotary Youth Exchange partner of then-correspondent Norm Bird, the scholarship fund received gifts in Marg’s name. The 2010-11 and 2011-12 scholarships were called the Shoemaker-Bird Scholarships.

In 2011, longtime Central States correspondent Tom Armstrong also passed away. The 2012-13 scholarship was the Shoemaker-Armstrong Scholarship. Three deserving outbounds were selected to receive the Shoemaker-Armstrong Scholarship that year.

Last year’s scholarship students receive the Shoemaker-Cranston Scholarship. Rob Cranston, former youth exchange committee chair for D6490 and a former CSRYE staff member, stepped down from his duties for health reasons. Seven outbounds received the 2016-17 scholarships.

Contributions to the scholarship fund this year came from the Taiwan Multi-District, the Canton Rotary Foundation. from District 6330 and the Central States Rotary Youth Exchange Board of Directors.

Nathan JohnsonSponsored by Windsor, Ont.,1918 Rotary Club and D6400

Nathan has always dreamed of traveling and learning a new language.  He was never sure how he was going to accomplish his dream until a member of the Rotary Club attended his school in the spring of his grade 11 year.  He knew that was his opportunity.

Going to South Korea, this exchange will be the year between grade 12 and university – a “gap” year as many call it.  But for Nathan it will be a time filled with learning and challenge; a time of discovery – of

himself, the world and his place within it. Nathan is the second oldest of six boys.  He believes that this

exchange will set the tone for his siblings to dream big, reach high, embrace challenges and work hard. Nathan is a mature, fun-loving gentle giant who enjoys friends, music and dancing.

never thought was possible for a girl from a small city in Wisconsin. My personal goals in life are to travel, be happy, and end up helping people. My professional goals for myself are to go to a great college, where I hope to major in a medical field.”
