THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I HEADCOUNT ENROLLMENT, SUMMER 2004

Headcount enrollment at the University of Hawai‘i measured 17,741 in Summer 2004 (Tables 1 & 2 and Figure 1). In Summer 2004, the summer sessions at UH Mānoa were merged into a single session. In prior years, the sum of Summer Sessions I and II at UH Mānoa were included in the UH system headcount total. However, beginning with Summer 2004, the UH system total includes only the single summer session at UH Mānoa. Consequently, the UH system headcount and Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) totals will be lower in Summer 2004 than in prior years. The percentage change calculations are not comparable to prior years and are not shown in Table 2 or Table 3. Headcount enrollment at UH Mānoa measured 9,157, a 3.6% decrease from the previous summer (note that the headcount for UH Mānoa is most equivalent to the unduplicated headcount for prior years, as shown in Table 2). Enrollment at UH Hilo declined 3.7% to 915, while enrollment at UH-West O‘ahu declined 5.8% to 276. Headcount enrollment at the UH Community Colleges measured 7,393, virtually unchanged from the prior summer. In Summer 2002, the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges migrated to a new student registration system. UH-West O‘ahu migrated to this system in Summer 2003, while UH Mānoa and UH Hilo migrated in Fall 2003. Subsequent to the migration, there was a large increase in the number of enrollment records with unusable data for certain fields, including: citizenship, education level, and permanent home address. The reader is advised to exercise caution when examining trends or using percentage data. Other Summer 2004 enrollment highlights:

! Students enrolling through the Western Undergraduate Exchange program grew from 12 in Summer 1997 (the first year on record) to 434 in Summer 2003, an average annual growth rate of 81%. Enrollment in Summer 2004 measured 436, perhaps indicating that the rapid growth has ended.

! The enrollment gap between men and women continued to widen in Summer

2004 (Figure 4). Women accounted for 63% of the total enrollment (Table 4), a new all-time high for the UH system.

! With the addition of continuing education credit students to the enrollment

counts at UH Mānoa, Hilo and Honolulu CC in Summer 1999, mean age jumped to 27.1 years (Figure 5). Since then, mean age has continued an overall downward trend, and measured 26.0 years in Summer 2004.

! The ethnic make-up of the student body continues to diversify. Since

Summer 1994, ethnic Filipino, Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders and students of mixed ethnicity have increased as a percentage of total enrollment, while Japanese and Chinese have decreased (Figure 6). Ethnic Caucasians have also increased slightly, most likely as a result of enrollment increases in students from the U.S. mainland via the WUE program.

1/ Total for UH Mānoa formerly included the sum of Summer Session I and Summer Session II. As of Summer 2004, these two terms have been combined into a single summer session. Therefore, the total for the UH system will be lower than in prior years. 2/ Increase in invalid data subsequent to migration to the Banner registration system: Summer 2002 at the UH Community Colleges, Summer 2003 at UH-West O‘ahu and Fall 2003 at UH Mānoa and UH Hilo. 3/ May include some foreign student enrollments for the UH Community Colleges. 4/ Students with zero SSH are students auditing courses for no credit, attending remedial non-credit courses or waiting for courses not currently offered. Zero SSH data no longer counted, effective Fall 2000, but may persist due to data processing anomalies. 5/ With migration to new registration system, ethnic categories have been expanded. Students enrolled prior to the change are reported under the ethnic category previously selected. Note: Data have been updated to include special students (concurrents and early admits) for all years shown.
