It is open to high school girls living in or near the greater Providence, RI area who will be entering the 10th or 11th grade in the fall of 2017. The program invites 20-25 girls to explore the mathematical sciences in an open and encouraging setting. Hands-on activities, interactive lectures, and daily computer labs are led by accomplished professional women, enthusiastic about serving as career models as well as scientific mentors. Potential topics include: cryptography, the mathematics of voting, image processing, prime numbers and factoring, and fractals. The goals of the program are to show high school girls that the study of mathematics can be exciting, beautiful, and useful, and to build confidence in their mathematical knowledge through engaging and expert mathematical instruction. The program also introduces participants to a variety of career opportunities in which sophisticated mathematical ability plays a key role. GirlsGetMath@ICERM is five-day non-residential mathematics program at Brown University. It is open to high school girls living in or near the greater Providence, RI area who will be entering the 10th or 11th grade in the fall of 2017. The program invites 20-25 girls to explore the mathematical sciences in an open and encouraging setting. Hands-on activities, interactive lectures, and daily computer labs are led by accomplished professional women, enthusiastic about serving as career models as well as scientific mentors. GirlsGetMath@ICERM es un campamento de verano de una semana que se lleva a cabo en la Universidad Brown para 20 a 25 chicas de nivel secundario que vivan en o cerca del gran Providence, RI. Este campamento tiene como objetivo brindar la oportunidad de construir conocimiento y confianza en habilidades matemáticas en una etapa temprana en la educación de las chicas y, en última instancia, busca dar forma a la perspectiva que ellas tienen de si mismas y de sus intereses y campacidades matemáticas.El programa está creado por matemáticos que en conjunto tienen muchos años de experiencia como investigadores y educadores. Los temas se seleccionan para mostrar la belleza y profundidad de las matemáticas. El programa está liderado por mujeres profesionales, entusiasmadas por ser modelos a seguir en esta carrera y mentoras en la ciencia.

A través de charlas temáticas e interactivas diarias, actividades prácticas y actividades en la sala de computación, las participantes explorarán temas como la criptografía, las matemáticas del voto, el procesamiento de imágenes, los fractales, los números primos y la factorización.

SolicitantesLas estudiantes deben ser solicitantes por primera vez, del área de gran Providence, RI o cerca, y que estén por ingresar a 10° u 11° grado en el otoño de 2017.El costo de la matrícula es de $100. Hay disponible ayuda financiera completa. El almuerzo y los refrigerios también están incluidos.Solicitudes abiertas en Mathprograms.org. Buscar en “Brown University”. Fecha límite: del 22 de mayo de 2017. Éste no es un programa bilingüe.

El programa GirlsGetMath@ICERM es posible únicamente gracias a subvenciounes y donaciones. El programa 2017 es posible gracias a una beca Epsilon de la Sociedad Estadounidense de Matemáticas, una beca NASA, a fondos de la Universidad Brown y a regalos de Math for America, de Microsoft Research, y de la Fundación Phoebe Snow.

Objetivos del programa Demostrar a través de actividades prácticas, juegos y simulaciones por computadora que el estudio de las matemáticas puede ser emocianante, hermoso y útil.

Presentar a los participantes una variedad de oportunidades de carreras para las que los conocimientos avanzados en matemáticas juegan un papel fundamental, con énfasis en el rol principal de las matemáticas para alcanzar el éxito en las carreras de Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas.

Darles a las participantes un grupo de apoyo compuesto por compañerors y mentores.

Estudiantes universitarios y de posgrado se unirán a los organizadores de le facultad y servirán como personal docente en el programa.
