SECTION B

Unit 14 Producing a print based media product. Over the summer you will be organising your Unit 14 folder. You have already completed a lot of the planning whilst you have been doing the Unit 31 coursework. You will be organising learning objective 1-3. Please place the contents page on page 10 at the front of your folder. On your return we will begin to create your magazine on the computers using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. (Learning objective 4). You will need to show key stages of your development and then print the final magazine.

PRE PRODUCTION AND POST PRODUCTION RECCE AND RISK ASSESSMENT – LO2 Use the appropriate forms to complete a recce and risk assessment of the media room. Recce - You have to assess how suitable the media room would be to help you plan your magazine. You also need to assess on the same recce form how it would be suitable to edit your magazine. Remember to explain your reasons clearly for each. Risk assessment - You have to assess the risk involved in using the media room to plan your magazine. You also need to assess on the same risk assessment form the risks involved to edit your magazine. Remember to explain your reasons clearly for each.

ARTICLE DRAFTS – LO2 Write the articles that appear in your magazine. This includes the price of items featured,

introductions to articles, everything! o You must include all drafts of your articles. o Clearly show how you have developed them through annotation. o Label each draft by number and date.

Keep each draft you write as this shows your development for LO3 (LO3: Be able to produce materials for use in an original print media product)

HOW TO WRITE AN EDITOR’S LETTER

When writing an editor’s letter you have to remember the PURPOSE of your writing. What is this purpose? - To engage with your readers and persuade them to buy and to read the magazine - To give your magazine a personal touch - To introduce the content of the current issue.

Depending on the nature of your magazine, you need to choose an appropriate STYLE AND APPROACH. The right approach depends very much on the AUDIENCE you are targeting. For example a recent GQ editorial uses the conventions of comedy and tells a funny story. The humour is geared towards younger men who appreciate stand-up comedy, and is a little dark and edgy. It begins “before I tell you the literally jaw-dropping story of my aunt’s dentures and how they hijacked my brother’s wedding day…” By contrast the editorial for Vogue Knitting begins “We all have days when life gets to be a little too much. Whether you’re on the countless women coping with a busy nine-to-five (or much later) routine or the fulltime CEO of a busy home and family, there are days when the stress levels could be much less…” (A CEO is a Chief Executive Officer, this is humour.) Clearly this specifically targets women, using the inclusive “we”, and shows an appeal both to working women and to women taking charge of homes/families.

A third example is a new magazine called “Verily!” This editor’s letter tries to build support for the magazine and reach out to new audiences: “Welcome to the first full issue of Verily! When we started Verily we knew that women needed something different: a magazine that spoke to their hearts as women and celebrated who they are, not what they’re told they should be…” The editorial then goes on to explain what this means, stating that Women are beautiful. We are powerful, ambitious, intelligent, and creative. But too often we see caricatures of that beauty…” So the magazine is trying to do something more challenging, more authentic, more “meaningful” than the standard women’s magazine. When we read on to discover that one of the features it about “women who managed to escape from the dark world of sex trafficking” we realise there are is a more political, realistic and critical edge to this women’s magazine.

So to sum up: - Clearly target your intended audience and address them in the right way to attract them to buy and

read the magazine - Be lively and upbeat, encouraging and excited when describing what the magazine is about and the

articles in it - Ideally, include some special feature or promotion in this specific issue - Highlight the way your magazine content meets the needs of your audience.

CONTACT SHEETS – LO3

You need to print ONE coloured contact sheet of ALL photographs intended to go in your magazine.

Do not delete ANY photographs.

Circle on your contact sheets the photographs you think are appropriate for your magazine articles and label.

These need to be in colour. If you do not have access to a colour printer, print them in school before we break up for the summer holiday.

o Insert your possible selection onto these pages. Note any adjustments you might make to

each photograph. (See example below).

Alternatively I could use the group shot but both would need brightening and slightly cropping. I could adjust the colour of the water to make it less dull. The picture on the right has a little more action taking place and could be more appealing to my magazines audience rather than the static image above.

Possibly brighten and adjust the colours to make them more vibrant.
