12 IUMUSIC SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL Jacobs School of Music alumni and others in the Chicago area will get a rare chance to enjoy the Indiana University Summer Music Festival Orchestra, conducted by Michael Stern and featuring faculty violinist Joshua Bell, in their own back yard this coming July. e orchestra will perform the Joshua Bell IU Centennial Concert at Ravinia’s Pavilion on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 7:30pm. e concert is part of a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the IU Department of Music. Alumnus Bell will be the soloist for Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, Op. 46, with violinist Jorja Fleezanis, Henry A. Upper Chair in Orchestral Bell to Join Festival Orchestra in Bloomington and Ravinia Studies, serving as concertmaster. e program will also include Dukas’s e Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Stravinsky’s Suite from e Firebird (1919), and Ives’ Variations on America (arranged by Schuman). e concert will follow the group’s perfor- mance of the same repertoire in Bloomington at the IU Auditorium on July 1 as part of the annual IU Summer Music Festival. Considered one of the finest ensembles in the region, the Festival Orchestra’s musicians include distinguished faculty members, guests from major symphony orchestras, and students at the Jacobs School of Music.
