JULY VALUE OF THE MONTH

‘INDEPENDENCE’

The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.

Denis Waitley

Dear Parents/ Carers,

It is with a sense of sadness but with one of

immense pride and achievement as I come to the

end of my time at Grange.

Since my arrival at Grange Primary there have

been significant improvements and we are now a

successful school, consistently performing above

the national average. There is a very strong,

talented and committed staff who I have no

doubt will sustain this success over the coming

years. The children have been wonderful, doing

their best and finding success. I must also give

an almighty thank you to all of the families who

have been so supportive and encouraging (and

sometimes challenging!) over this period.

Success only comes through a powerful

partnership between home and school. We have

that.

In the interim, Mr Parker will take over my role.

Mrs Edwards and Miss Drakard will be the new

Deputies and Mr Rasheed will take on the role of

Assistant Headteacher. They have already

ensured the transition for school improvement

will be seamless.

As usual, there will be other arrivals and

departures.

I wish all of the leavers, including our pupils who

are moving on, the very best for the future and

extend a warm welcome to our new arrivals. Once

again, I offer my gratitude to you. Working here

has been the highlight of my career. I am so

delighted about the reputation Grange has within

the local community now. I have no doubt that

Grange Primary School will continue to go from

strength to strength.

Kind regards

Spanish Day

On Monday 15th of May we held our first ever Spanish Day at Grange Primary. Despite the gloomy weather out-

side, the school was awash with colour; with children and adults dressed in red and yellow or traditional Span-

ish dress. The sounds of castanets, Peruvian rain shakers, Mexican rancheros and the Spanish guitar ran

through the corridors helping to create a lovely atmosphere!

The different year groups represented different Spanish speaking countries and took part in a wide variety of

arts and crafts activities relating to their particular country. Year 6, who were also celebrating the end of

their SATs tests, had lots of fun cooking tacos, making sombreros and Day of the Dead masks. I’m told the

tacos tasted absolutely delicious!! Year 5 pupils were really lucky to participate in a special storytelling work-

shop entitled, Journey through Latin America which they thoroughly enjoyed.

In addition, Mr Hernandez, a magician/musician from the Spanish Embassy joined us for part of the day and

ran workshops for children in years 3 and 4. The children and adults were completely mesmerised by some of

his magic tricks! Year 1 did not miss out on the fun and enjoyed learning Science and PE through Spanish and

super lucky year 2 took part in Zumba workshops – muchas gracias to our lovely LSA, Miss B. Lacey!! Reception,

who made an amazing effort with their flamenco costumes also had fun making castanets and Spanish flags.

After a special Spanish themed lunch we had two special assemblies where prizes for the homework projects

relating to Spanish Day were given out and children waved their handmade flags as we sang the song, Wavin’

Flag. Next, some classes spent some time teaching their class teachers some Spanish, and we also had some

mini teachers from our KS2 Spanish Club giving year 2 an Introduction to Spanish.

On a personal note, having been involved with teaching languages at Grange for almost 10 years now, it was re-

ally special to see the whole school unite on this day to celebrate Spanish and Latin American culture. A huge

thank you to all our amazing staff team for ensuring the activities ran smoothly and that the children had a

wonderful day.

Art Week with Artist Jenny Leonard

In Summer Term we had a successful Arts Week at Grange. We would like to say thank you to the

parents for their financial support. Children had the opportunity to work with an extraordinary art-

ist, Jenny Leonard. She was impressed with the enthusiasm and how well behaved the

children were.

Music News:

The Recorders Festival took place on 23rd May at Har-

row Arts Centre, and the Song Festival took place on

28th June at Kadwa Patidar Centre.

I have to say the children's performance was fabulous

and they represented Grange Primary School really well.

I am very proud and privileged to see such fantastic per-

formances. Well Done everyone involved!!

Author’s Visit to Grange Primary

Grange School Council, with the help of Mrs Johnson, are keen to foster a love of reading. So

they invited first time author, Jennifer Killick to Grange Primary School.

Jennifer Killick shared her understanding of how to become an author. She explored the cov-

er of the book and read extracts from the book to Key Stage 1.

KS1 and KS2 Children were invited to explore some features of the book and were read ex-

tracts from the book.

Ms Killick conducted workshops for some year 4 and 5 classes.

Later on, children from all classes had the opportunity to purchase a copy of the book,

which Jennifer signed for them. They were also given a postcard of the book, as a memento.

At Grange Primary School, a diverse range of children demonstrated that they love reading.

Well done Grange teachers, children and parents!

Important Safety Notice for Parents:

Service Road Use by Parents and Children

Scooters and Bicycles

Please can parents supervise their children on the

playground and when walking up the service road, pu-

pils should not be riding their scooters or bikes, this is

very dangerous as cars drive up there to the car park.

Please do not allow them to ride these in the play-

ground. We do not wish to ban children from riding to

school so please, please do not allow them to ride them

past the school gates.

Their safety and welfare are of the upmost im-

portance to us. Thank you!

Parking in Tintern Way and Furness Road at drop

off and pick up times:

We have had several complaints from residents about

parents parking over their driveways at school drop

off and pick up times. Please refrain from parking ille-

gally and be aware that Harrow Council will be issuing

parking tickets to those parked across driveways, dou-

ble parked and on yellow lines. Thank you for your co-

operation.

Spitting in the Playground:

Can parents and pupils please refrain from spitting on

the ground in the playground. We have had several

complaints. This spreads germs and is very unpleasant.

Thank you for your co-operation.

School Uniform

Are you going to be getting ready for next term over the summer? Please remember that we ask that all children wear a school uniform including Nursery and Reception children, we feel that it helps to achieve a sense of belonging and identity. Be proud to belong to Grange Primary.

School uniform can be ordered online from Tesco

Uniform Embroidery Services www.tesco.com/ues (a

delivery charge is payable) or purchased directly

from Angels Uniforms in Rayners Lane. Our uniform consists of:

Grey skirt, trousers or pinafore dress White shirt, blouse or polo shirt Blue Grange sweatshirt and jersey cardigans Black leather Shoes (no trainers)

During the summer months girls may wear blue check dresses and boys may wear grey shorts. Please label all items of clothing with your child’s name.

Headscarves

If headscarves are worn they should be black, grey,

blue or white and are of a length that does not pre-

sent a health and safety risk.

PE Uniform

PE (Physical Education) is an important part of the

National Curriculum, and it requires appropriate

clothing. The children should bring their PE kit to

school in a separate, named drawstring bag. The

necessary clothing and footwear are:

White T-Shirt

Dark blue or black sports shorts/track suit bottoms

Sports trainers/plimsolls for outdoor PE

Plimsolls for indoor PE

Purple, green and red writing pens

A pencil
