The quality an IIFMites possesses is
a holistic view of various sectors be it
development, wildlife or sustainability,
which is essential as they go hand in
hand. The course is designed in such a
brilliant manner that the students get
a broad knowledge of all these areas in the first year while the second year
prepares them with deeper needs of the
industry, the corporates, consulting, and
also conservation, with internships and field trips providing a tinge of the ground
reality. The course equips us with better
observation skills and prepares us to
enter the workforce. This makes us stand
out from other colleges.

To date I credit IIFM, pretty much
100%, to where I am today. IIFM opens
up a world of opportunities, largely the
onus is on each of us to decide what
we want to do of those opportunities.
For me, IIFM just opened up various
dimensions to how this country works.
I grew up as a city kid. So actually
knowing that there is a world out
there beyond the cities, to knowing
how community worked, governments
worked, the interplay between
development organizations and what
people are trying to do with community
based organizations, I think that was
all an eye-opener that IIFM made it
possible for me. The exposure that came
along with it and the desire to want to
do something different was obviously
to some extent mine, but I would credit
IIFM for instilling that desire to actually
want to make that change in how the
world operated around me. For that, I’ll
always be grateful to IIFM.

I am what I am because of the training
at IIFM. The inputs on a range of issues
spreading from environment to rural
development to business provided
the much needed fuel to launch my
career as a development professional.
Interactions with teachers, friends and
peers helped shape my thought process,
and played a big role in whatever
little I could offer to the sector. While
the rigour of the course helped in my
work as a practitioner, researcher and
teacher, I am most grateful to IIFM to
have lit a child-like inquisitiveness that
in a way irreversibly transformed who I am.

In today’s professional world, to survive
and grow, one requires to learn unlearn
& re-learn new subjects and skills. IIFM
helps inculcate this attitude in the
students through it’s curriculum design
and ensuring student diversity. Each
batch has students across engineering,
science to arts from all corners of India.
One studies subjects from Accounts,
Statistics, Psychology to Forestry etc. It
helps one to appreciate and imbibe the
skill to Learn, Unlearn and Re-learn.

The inputs from IIFM have proved useful
throughout my professional life. While
in the early days, project management,
monitoring and MIS played an important
part, during the later years, I use more
from the strategic management, HR and
Organisational Development lessons.
Research methodologies especially
participatory tools; business planning
and risk assessment tools; feasibility
analysis tools were used frequently in
my career. I have upgraded my skillset
in keeping with the changing times, but
it all builds on the solid foundation laid
at IIFM. Although, forestry is a niche
expertise for any IIFMite, over time,
I see that over time, the alumni has diversified into different sectors, ranging
from social enterprises to corporate
finance. This is testimony to the sound
training provided at the institute

As I reflect back, what really stands out
about IIFM is the opportunity it provided
me to experience the challenges and
complexities of social problem solving.
IIFM has been instrumental in paving
the way for committing to life long
learning, building equanimity in dealing
with reality and a strong belief in the
power of collective abilities and efforts
to a make difference.

IIFM gave me a deep understanding
of social issues and natural resources
management and provided me the
requisite management and leadership
skills to shape my work over the past
19 years. In this age of multisectoral
intersectionality I find myself confident
and equipped to tackle and solve
complex development issues and
problems, much because of the early
initiation during my course in IIFM.

About Bhopal Known as the City of Lakes, Bhopal is the
capital of Madhya Pradesh. Founded by Raja Bhoj, the city has many natural and artificial
lakes and it is one of the greenest cities in the
country. Bhopal has retained its old world charm
despite industrialization, with the old part of the
city being full of narrow alleyways and crammed
markets, while the new part of the city is better
planned and is full of parks and gardens.
