SUMMER SCHOOL 2021

We have many new and exciting programmes on offer as well as the old favourites.

Nursery children will once again learn in the comfort and security of the specialised Early Learning areas at The Lady Elizabeth School in Benitachell. They will learn English during play and fun activities which include, dance, swimming, gym, art & craft, dance and free play. They will be in the care of our friendly, professional and highly qualified nursery staff and their assistants who focus on the children following a fun and varied programme.

The 5 - 8 and 9 - 11 year old children will enjoy learning English during inspirational lessons. Our professional English teachers focus on the four skills of learning a language with particular emphasis placed on speaking and communication. A variety of activities are included in the programme and in 2021 we have added exciting activities and workshops. Children will love to learn Circus Skills and sporting activities such as Tennis which have been included in the 2021 Summer Programme.

In 2021 teenage students will be able to choose specific programmes so that they can focus on something that they really enjoy, rather than doing activities which might not be of interest to them. They will combine an Academic Subject with a specialised activity which is chosen before the course begins. They have the choice of four Academic Subjects and eight Elective Subjects. We feel that this choice allows students to participate in subjects that they like and have a passion for.

Our excellent Residential Programme, where students stay with a Host Family, continues in 2021 with the fabulous addition of our wonderful Boarding House Facility, situated within 30 minutes of The Lady Elizabeth School. Students will have the choice of whether they stay with a Host Family or they can opt for the Boarding House where they will stay with up to 25 other students from countries all around the world.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE 12 - 16 GROUPS

Due to Academic and Elective Subjects being two week programmes, ALL students in the 12 - 16 Group need to sign up for at least one session and even though students can do a three-week programme, they must start at the beginning of a Session. They cannot join the second week of a Session which has already commenced. They can do two, three, four, five, six or eight weeks but they must always start at the beginning of a Session.

It is preferred that the 9 - 11 Group also join at the beginning of a Session, however, as their programme is more flexible under special circumstances they will be allowed to join on the second week of a Session.

Younger children can join the Summer Programme at any time.

12 - 17 YEAR OLD STUDENTS

We have redesigned the Summer School Programme for our older students so that they can choose subjects that

they are interested in rather than doing subjects that they may not enjoy.

Each weekday morning, the 12 - 17 year old students will participate in English Academic lessons. They can choose from the following subjects:

• ✔ English Language (beginner to advanced)• ✔ Global Perspectives• ✔ Science/Environmental Sustainability and Conservation• ✔ Creative Writing✔There are 4 x 45 minute English Academic lessons during the morning session. The individual subjects are all designed to enhance and improve a student’s understanding of English,

and also to give them an opportunity to either learn about global issues, learn new skills in Creative Writing or gain a greater understanding of science and the environment in fun and practical science lessons. In the afternoon, students will spend their time developing skills in the elective subject they chose at the beginning of the programme. These classes include:

• ✔ Sport• ✔ Performing Arts• ✔ Photography• ✔ Fine Arts• Master Chef • Mixed Activities• Woodwork

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMEENGLISH LANGUAGE

Students sit an English examination upon arrival at Summer School and are put into groups based on the exam result.

There are generally four levels, Beginner, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced. Special consideration is given to students who are looking at passing a Cambridge or equivalent exam and they are put into a class with others who have the same aim.

English is taught in a relaxed environment with a lot of emphasis on speaking activities. Students work in pairs or small groups to build confidence and fluency in real life scenarios. They develop skills in thinking, reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. Class sizes are small so that teachers are able to give students individual support and help during the lessons.

Group activities include University Challenge, Running Dictations, Quizzes, Student Presentations and Debates. These activities encourage students to work in teams and to have fun whilst learning.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMEGLOBAL PERSPECTIVES

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

Students will develop an understanding of global issues from personal, local or national and

international perspectives, using research, reasoning and questioning skills to gain this understanding and form their own judgements. They will work in teams or as individuals to research topics as diverse as Climate Change, Conflict & Peace, Disease & Health, Education For All, Fuel & Energy, Law & Criminality and Tradition, Culture & Identity. They will produce their findings by way of a group or individual project or presentation.

Students will also participate in debating teams and a Mini Model United Nations Conference. They will learn debating skills, public speaking skills and gain

confidence in all aspects of oral communication. Global Perspectives will also help with vocabulary in global topics that are in current affairs on a daily basis.

Students of all ages and nationalities are becoming more and more aware of global issues, especially when it comes to the environment and conflict and peace. Global Perspectives is a subject that students will become passionate about during their debating and when representing a country in the Mini United Nations Conference. The more passionate they are the more they will want to win their debates and the more they will focus on the use of more complex and sophisticated language.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMECREATIVE WRITING

The Creative Writing Summer School Programme is designed for students of all levels and interests who want to explore their own potential and challenge

themselves creatively.

Based on a two week programme the Creative Writing Programme is recommended for students who really want to improve their writing skills.

Workshops will introduce students to all phases of the writing process, including idea generation, writing and revising drafts and editing. Teachers will help and encourage students through the different stages until both student and teacher are happy with the outcome. Students will explore different genres of creative writing and look at the work of different poets, short story authors, playwrights and lyricists.

Students will write extensively and the course is intended for those who desire to understand the power of creative language. They will enjoy producing original poems, scenes from a play or movie, song lyrics and short stories.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMEENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY and CONSERVATION

FULL OF FIELD STUDY AND EXPERIMENTATION, ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND CONSERVATION IS A HANDS-ON CLASS TO HELP STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND OUR EVER-CHANGING ENVIRONMENT AND THE POSTITIVE AND NEGATIVE IMPACTS HUMANS HAVE.

Learn how our environment is affected by change, learn what it means for life, and discover how

to positively affect it. As we enter a period of unprecedented change in human history, the study of conservation and the future of our planet has never been more important. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the main issues affecting biodiversity in the world today. Students will cover a broad range of topics from biology to ecology to climate change and food security. As part of the course, students will develop their laboratory skills and undertake a final project which will be centered around field skills.

Students choose one elective subject to study for three hours a day, in total this will equate to 24

hours of immersive class time for the duration of the two weeks and 48 hours for the four week programme. Students are also able to do two weeks of one subject and then change and do two weeks of another subject if they are doing the four week course.

The subjects on offer are:

• Photography• Sport• Master Chef• Performing Arts• Art & Design• Woodwork• Multi-Activity Programme

Please note that there are limited places in each of the elective classes and once committed to a class students must complete the two week course.

These activities are for students aged from 12 - 17.Younger students staying with Host Family will follow a programme which includes English and a mixture of activities.

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMESTUDENTS CHOOSE ONE ELECTIVE SUBJECT

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMEPHOTOGRAPHY

There’s much more to photography than just pointing and shooting with a mobile phone. Photography is an art and this fun and practical elective is aimed at all budding photographers, from beginners to more

experienced students. It will teach pupils how to use a camera for the first time, or help to explore new avenues and techniques for students who already have a good understanding of photography.

The class is structured around practical assignments, which will be collated in a mini portfolio as the basis for future work and study. Students will study the composition of photos and look at ways of enhancing their own work using different programs including Photoshop and Lightroom. They will look at different genres such as: Abstract, Landscape, Portrait, Experimental, Photojournalism and Location. Pupils will leave Summer School with a sketch book full of their own work with annotations describing the techniques they used and how they improved the look of the photo.

Learning outcomes include:

• ✔Understanding your digital camera• ✔ Shooting in manual• ✔ An appreciation of composition• ✔ Improved editing and portfolio -building skills

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMESPORT

We understand that some students just want to play sport and are not interested in other activities on offer. In 2021 there will be

a programme of sport.

Pupils will be able to try new sports or improve on old skills. Football, volleyball, rounders, rugby, cricket, swimming and many other sports will be played throughout the weeks at Summer School and there will be regular competitions and team events for everyone to participate in.

Outdoor education will become part of Summer School with students who follow the sports programme able to participate in activities such as mountain bike riding, orienteering, kayaking, stand up paddle and regular visits will be made to local padel and tennis courts.

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMEMASTER CHEF

Cooking is an all-time favourite at Summer School, but in 2021 we are taking it to the next level where students have the chance to learn to cook three-course meals and specialist dishes. They will also learn about food preparation and

presentation with each two-week course finishing with a Master Chef competition.

Whilst learning how to cook, students will also learn about nutrition, healthy options and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.

As part of the course students will visit local markets and supermarkets to choose ingredients for their competition. The idea is to make it a lot of fun but it is also about learning English and how to cook!

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMEPERFORMING ARTS

Our Performing Arts course gives students a new and interactive way to hone their English skills and become stars of the stage! Teachers will run sessions on improvisation, stage settings, and theatrical techniques.

At the end of each fortnightly course students will perform for their parents. The performance will be based on the theme for that fortnight.

Week 2: The Greatest Show on EarthWeek 4: Under the SeaWeek 6: LES Has Talent

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMEART & DESIGN

Students who like art and to be creative will love spending their summer working on some great artistic projects based around the fortnightly themes.

Their chance to shine will come at the end of the course when their work is displayed for parents and other students to see. They will have the choice of different mediums and will work on one major piece to take home with them. There is nothing nicer for artistic and creative people to spend time with like-minded people pottering in an art room.

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMEWOODWORK

In 2021 we have included woodwork in the programme to give students the opportunity to learn new skills and to complete

a small woodwork project to take home. They will learn how to use basic woodwork tools under the supervision of an experienced carpenter and woodwork teacher.

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMEENGLISH & MULTI-ACTIVITIES

Over the two week period they will manage their own project and enjoy seeing the final outcome. Children love to create and there is nothing more satisfying than working on a project from start to finish.

Some students like to try a combination of activities and

don’t want to focus on just one. For that reason we offer English combined with multi-activities. Students will do four lessons of English per day and four activities. The activities include:

• Sport & Games• Cooking• Art• Performing Arts• Swimming

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES@SUMMER SCHOOL

EXTRA SCHOOLACTIVITIES

During the normal school day students will participate in a number of workshops and

activities as well as their regular lessons. Yoga

classes, circus skills workshops, film-making and public speaking workshops, woodwork and crafts workshops are all part of the Summer School Experience. Students will come away with a wealth of new and

exciting skills. Many new challenges

await them and the opportunity to spend time with new and old friends doing fun and exciting activities and workshops is one that will provide lasting and fond memories.

Outdoor activities are a big and challenging part of Summer School. The perfect weather along

with being so close to the Mediterranean makes water-based activities ideal for students. They will learn new skills or improve on

existing ones when they venture out of the school once a week to participate in activities which include Stand Up Paddle, Kayaking, Snorkelling, Inflatables and Sailing. Land-based activities are also enjoyed by students and they will love Mountain Bike Riding, Orienteering and visiting a local ropes course adventure park.

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMME@SUMMER SCHOOL

In 2021 we have two residential options. Students can either stay with a Host Family or they can stay in the Boarding Facility which is approximately 30 minutes from the School. Either way students will have a wonderful time getting to know other students from

different countries around the world whilst studying English in a wonderful safe environment at a fabulous school.

We hand-pick our Host Families, visiting their homes and ensuring that they have up-to-

date police checks. We try and make the best possible matches between students and families to ensure that they all have a great summer experience.

Many of our Host Families have children of their own whilst others have grown-up children who live away from home. Either way the Host Parents are welcoming and children staying with them are made to feel welcome and comfortable.

During the week students have breakfast with the Host Family before they leave for school. Some Host Families drive the children to The Lady Elizabeth School and others use the bus service. Families provide the students with a snack and a drink for break time and lunch is provided by the school.

The evening meal is had with the Host Family and on many occasions Host Families get together with other families to have BBQs or social gatherings where students can see their friends from school.

We offer 24-hour assistance and pastoral care for our families and the students staying with them.

We know and trust our families and the best testimonials that we have are that students want to repeat with the same family year after year.

A fabulous addition to Summer School 2021 is our wonderful Boarding House Facility which

is situated within 30 minutes of The Lady Elizabeth School.

House Parents will care for a small number of children aged from 12 to 17 years from different countries around the world. A bus will transport students to and from school each morning and afternoon and in the evenings there will be activities organised by the House Parents.

The Boarding Facility has a large pool, a table tennis table, large community areas and is beautifully furnished. Meals will be prepared by the House Parents and all students will eat together in the dining area.

On Saturday boarders will go with other students, staying with Host Families, to one of the theme parks in Benidorm. On Sunday they will go on cultural trips to Valencia or Alicante, or go to the beach to participate in one of the great outdoor activities in the local area.

Students will have an unforgettable experience staying in the Boarding House and will make lasting friendships with students from all around the world.
