Summer School 100 LEVEL PAPERS133.190 MUSIC SPECIAL TOPIC: INTRO TO ABLETON LIVEIn this course students will learn techniques to transfer music production techniques into live performance setting. Students will gain a basic knowledge and practical understanding of how Ableton Live is used for production and as an instrument for live performance. Students will also gain an awareness of the physical interfaces used to control and trigger Ableton Live.

212.100 FASHION PATTERN MAKINGIn this studio paper students will be introduced to fundamental patternmaking methods through an applied 3D-2D developmental process. Students will acquire basic skills for the creation of garment patterns for contemporary fashion design.

212.101 FASHION CONSTRUCTIONIn this studio paper students will be introduced to specialised apparel industrial machinery, techniques and applied processes of apparel manufacture through construction sampling and prototyping. These industrial methods will enrich understanding of design solutions for garment and product assembly and creative exploration.

222.104 PRINTMAKINGIn this studio course students will focus on issues and design considerations particular to printmaking. Students will acquire specific printmaking techniques, skills and processes to gain competence in this hands-on medium.A popular hands-on paper for students from any field of design. Learn intaglio and relief printing techniques, mono-printing, dry point engraving, and etching.

200 LEVEL PAPERS133.290 MUSIC SPECIAL TOPIC: ANALOG MIXING AND MASTERINGIn this course students will develop mixing and mastering skills and techniques for working with analog consoles. Students will learn signal path on a large format console in professional recording studios using Pro Tools. Students will also be introduced to the processes of using effects and dynamics and gain a knowledge and understanding of mixing and mastering essentials.

300 LEVEL PAPERS198.320 OPEN DESIGN AND DIGITAL FABRICATIONIn this studio course students will utilise open design methodologies and digital fabrication tools to produce an open design project. They will explore the possibilities and articulate issues related to an open design philosophy whilst developing skills in making and digital fabrication.

213.254 CONTEMPORARY DRAWING PROJECTSThis is a paper that models and explores what it means to have a drawing practice today. Providing the opportunity for students to work each week with an expert in the field that engages technologies and ways of thinking in new and exciting ways. Culminating in an opportunity in the final week for the students to develop further a process(es) they have enjoyed and to apply it to their own practice/ideas.

221.222 PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE DARKROOMIn this studio paper students will be introduced to a variety of photographic analogue processes, which they will employ to produce a body of work. Selected darkroom and wet-based photographic techniques will be explored.

222.232 CHARACTER DESIGNIn this studio paper students will explore the unique area of character creation, design and production. Following an investigative process, students will develop an original character that is meaningfully placed within a social or fantastical context.

289.290 CMP SPECIAL TOPIC: CREATIVE ELECTRONICS WITH ARDUINOIn this course, students will learn to develop creative systems using an Arduino microcontroller. Students will be guided through the basics of Arduino including input and output components and their use in creating interactive works. Students will learn about basic electronic components and the software used in working with Arduino.

222.391 SPECIAL TOPIC: APPLIED MARKETING AND DESIGN STRATEGIES FOR SOCIAL CHANGEIn this strategy and practice course we will use social marketing strategy and design thinking to address current real world problems such as Diabetes. We will team up Business School Marketing and School of Design students in the application of co-creative practices exploring social change to create new ideas, attitudes and practices across societal and cultural boundaries. There is one assignment with two parts, comprising of a social marketing plan and creative solutions using a broad spectrum of media. What you will learn in this course will accelerate your learning relevant to other courses and programmes as well as a key foundation for industry employment.

223.312 TEXTILE INTERACTIONSIn this studio course students will explore the design, development and construction of textiles for installation, exhibition or performance. The 2017 offering is a live competition brief in collaboration with Wellington City Council. The competition brief asks you to design a flag that celebrates Wellington’s Waterfront through colour, form, texture and mark. You will explore the relationship of pattern and place through sublimat printing, with an emphasis on colour, collage, painting and paper processing.At the culmination of this project, seven of the proposed designs will be selected by the Wellington City Council Waterfront Management to be produced as full scale flags to be flown at the southern end of Frank Kitts Park on Wellington’s waterfront.

400 LEVEL PAPERS197.440 CONTEMPORARY DESIGN PROJECT D: CREATIVE WORKS FOR FESTIVALS AND EVENTSThis interdisciplinary course focuses on developing creative work that responds to specific festivals themes and locations. With a focus on practice and collaboration you will ideate and prototype a piece of work, with the aim of developing a working prototype and proposal for Wellington’s Lux light festival.You will be using ideas of embodiment and the boundary between objects, people and their surroundings to design and prototype a moving, and illuminated response to the LUX environment.

197.441 SPECIAL TOPIC: TOY DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTIONDraw, develop and design an original toy through to a final manufacturable 3D product using hard or soft materials. For students from any field of design.

197.471 SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS THROUGH DESIGN: URBAN CAMOUFLAGEThis is an interdisciplinary course exploring the intersection between art and design and public engagement. In the Urban Camouflage theme we explore how clothing, performance, installation, projection, etc, can rejuvenate disagreeable city buildings, forgotten urban objects and underused public spaces.

223.412 SUSTAINABLE COLOURATIONStudents will explore contemporary design concepts using sustainable dye processing and advanced technology to colour and pattern textiles.
