HAPPENINGS FROM THE CHAIR

A Publication of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities

SUMMER/FALL 2015

Len Gregory, Chair, Board of Trustees

I am honored to write this article, my first as Chair

of this great organization. I have big shoes to follow.

Under previous leadership in the past decade, many

tremendous accomplishments took place. A 35 million

dollar capital campaign was concluded, buildings were

built and opened, and a home care agency was started. This is no small feat. A tremendous

mazal tov to Robert Haimsohn and his leadership on all of the above; the great responsibility

ahead for me and the Board of the Homes is taken with great pride.

The next several years will prove a time of great challenge and excitement. We are working

in a time where there is uncertainty regarding health care reimbursement for our most frail

elderly who live in the nursing home. While Seacrest receives a reimbursement for their care,

and while it is uncertain from year to year, regardless of the reimbursement our commitment

remains unwavering; the residents will always receive the best of care and services available.

The challenge becomes the amount of charitable care we are able to provide if the

reimbursement structure for each individual is decreased. This is the uncertainty we live with

and the reason we are so dependent upon the generosity of those in our community. We

are also faced with unprecedented numbers of those who will need care. With or without

resources, the number of people needing care is going to increase dramatically as many baby

boomers reach that stage.

With the tremendous assistance of visionaries such as Dr. Stanley Pappelbaum, Hildi Beyor,

Anne Nargorner, Bob Haimsohn, and Kelli Denton, R.N. a home care agency was created and

has been most successful. This is a step in keeping people at home where they choose to be

until they need a place in one of our communities.

We are now in the process of developing a plan to build on a small piece of property adjacent

to the Encinitas campus. Over the next year we hope to have a plan in place to be able to care

for even more people with additional units being built.

I am challenged and honored to be taking this seat from Mr. Haimsohn and know that

with the rest of the Board, and the generosity of the community, we will indeed continue

to honor all who came before us while planning for the generations of people who will

need us next. •

Not a day goes by that I am not consciously grateful for the support bestowed upon San Diego Hebrew Homes, Seacrest Foundation, Seacrest at Home, and Guardians of San Diego by you, our caring and concerned contributors. I often wonder, and I hope, that you know the impact you make with your generosity of financial support and time.

Each gift we receive enables us to do something for a resident in need that we might not otherwise be able to do. With over 400 residents, many of whom receive some form of charitable care, the gifts made are essential in allowing us to provide as well as go beyond the provision of housing and healthcare services.

Your gifts allow us to have a full time Rabbi to sit by the side of residents as they deal with losses that are often unthinkable. Many have no friends or family other than those at Seacrest. Some were confined to an apartment, unable to get around before moving to Seacrest. Your gifts bring that special spark to residents’ eyes when they are able to go on an outing, or finally sit at the dinner table and have someone to speak with.

The equipment in the Esther & Bud Fischer Fitness and Aquatics Center has helped to build strength in the bodies of those who were more limited before they began supervised exercising. We have monitored the rate of falls, which have been reduced by 30% because of the physical strengthening that is possible because of your support.

Your gifts of time and compassion are priceless. The time you spend leading a class, painting someone’s nails, leading a song session, running a theatre workshop, assisting with holiday services, or spending time with someone who has no family is so needed, appreciated, and life affirming. Your support, both financial and of time, is critical—you make a difference.

As we head toward the High Holy Day season, the thought of Tikkun Olam rings throughout our San Diego Jewish Community. Together as a Jewish community we care for one another, and we make life better for those less fortunate. We take the time to make a difference, we lend a hand to a friend or colleague in need, we do as we were taught by those who came before us. And we make the community a better place for all of us as we seek a better tomorrow.

From all of us at San Diego Hebrew Homes, Seacrest Foundation, Seacrest at Home, and Guardians of San Diego, I wish you a Shana Tova and a year filled with all things good. •

B’Shalom,

Atul Gawande, a prominent physician and New York Times best selling author, writes, “In older history and in other countries, the old are revered for having great knowledge and wisdom. Now we consult Google. If we have any trouble with the computer, we ask a teenager.”

While Atul Gawande’s quote offers humor, it’s not necessarily true.

Did you know that seniors now constitute the fastest growing sector of Internet users? 59% of U.S. seniors report that they use the Internet. 17% of online dating site users are senior adults. 46% of seniors online use social networking sites and 50% of seniors are predicted to have smartphones by 2017.

Today, I routinely receive emails from our Seacrest residents. I see them “liking” posts on our Seacrest Village Facebook page. Our computer lounge is full; residents enjoy learning new facets from our wonderful volunteers who provide computer classes and individual sessions. It’s interesting to note that it is now necessary to remind residents to turn off their cell phones when attending religious services. Seniors use the latest technology to facilitate expedient and inexpensive transportation—Uber. FaceTime and Skype are used routinely to connect seniors with their families and friends across the country and the world. We’ve even had a Bar Mitzvah streamed so that a resident, unable to travel, could observe her grandchild’s service.

Technology also serves as a safety net for many older adults. Whether one lives at home or in a retirement community, bracelets and pendants can be used to assure that assistance is on the way, should help be needed. Like many hospitals and health care providers, Seacrest has recently implemented electronic health records. This enormous undertaking has and will continue to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and expediency of health care information. Technology companies continue to develop new ways to support older adults to prepare for the tremendous growth of this population in years to come.

I feel it’s important that seniors, and all of us, take advantage of the opportunities offered by these changes. It’s inspiring to see so many of our residents embrace new technologies. These opportunities empower them to connect with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in ways that were never dreamed possible. •

A beautiful evening was held at the Seacrest Village Campus in Encinitas on May 15, 2015 in honor of those who have considered Seacrest Foundation or Seacrest Village in their estate plan.

Approximately forty guests, including Roz and Stan Pappelbaum, Nancy and Rick Vann, Hildi Beyor, Charlie Rosen, Jane Ottenstein, Joyce and Jere Oren,

Robert Haimsohn, Carolyn Brooking, Robin and Ron Israel, Pam and Walter Ferris, Carol and Ron Fox, Teddie Lewis, Renee Levine, Alice Morawetz and David Alpert, Gina Tapper, Anat and Len Gregory, Sandy and Earl Altshuler, Linda and Wayne Otchis, Norma and Werner Dreifuss, Alberta Feurzeig and Harold Laz and Dina Moskowitz gathered for what turned

into an evening filled with story-telling and friendship.

Wayne Otchis, featured speaker for the evening, whose mother recently passed away at the Encinitas campus, spoke of his reason for considering Seacrest Foundation

in his estate plan. What happened after that was beautiful, as almost everyone in the room followed with their personal stories of how they have been touched by Seacrest Village and why it was so important for them to leave a legacy gift. One guest commented that “the future of how we will be able to provide for those in need in our Jewish community depends on the legacy gifts that are established now.”

For more information on how to leave a legacy gift to the Seacrest Foundation, please contact Robin Israel at 760.516.2018. •

A MESSAGE

from the RabbiRabbi Patti Haskell

Every Shabbat at the end of services I have the honor of sharing these words in Hebrew and then English with the kahal, with the community. I am twice blessed because we have services at 9:30 in one building and again at 10:45 in another, so I get to do it twice. Many rabbis and cantors have this blessing custom. Others save these powerful words exclusively for High Holy Days, weddings, and other special moments of lifecycle or the liturgical year.

An alternative method for sharing this blessing is for congregants to turn to someone sitting near them. One person has a moment to say something they would like to be blessed with and the other person, after listening closely, forms the first person's words into a prayer, a blessing, and blesses them.  Then they switch so that the blessee became the blesser and the blesser became the blessee.

During a spiritual retreat I experienced a third way, where the retreat leader called each of us participating to come sit before him and receive a private blessing from his heart and from his experience of us as individuals.

The three line Priestly Blessing comes once a year in a Torah reading during the spring season. This year, on the Shabbat that it was read from Torah, instead of a sermon I decided to try individual blessings. Cantor Kathy Robbins was sharing the bima with me that day, so as I went to individual residents she accented the moment with music. In both the 9:30 service in The Goldberg Healthcare Center Guardian Room and in the 10:45 service in The Ellen & Ingram Chodorow Synagogue I went to individuals and asked what blessing they would like. Then, after listening closely, I turned their words into a blessing just for them. There were touching personal requests, requests for family member's health, and a couple residents requested that they might walk once again. My heart overflowed with the beauty, the tears, the sadness, and the grace that I saw. For those unable to share their deep desire, I listened with my soul and I blessed so that everyone was included.

That Shabbos I received the greatest blessing of all (as we who work at Seacrest do every day), in being a mirror for our glorious residents. I am filled with gratitude. •

May God Bless you and keep you. May God cause Divine light to shine upon you and be gracious to you. May God turn toward you and grant you peace.”

HOLE-IN-ONE at the GUARDIANS OF SAN DIEGO’S

24th ANNUAL GOLF & TENNIS TOURNAMENTThe chances of hitting a hole-in-one, for the average handicap golfer, are approximately 12,000 to 1. On Monday, July 27th at the Guardians of San Diego’s 24th Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament, Constantino “Connie” Salios of Huntington Beach beat those odds and recorded an ace during the charity golf event to benefit Seacrest Village and earned a 2015 Audi A3 sponsored by Hoehn Carlsbad.

“I’ve been playing golf for over 40 years and this is my first hole-in-one ever,” shared Salios who has participated in the Guardians of San Diego Tournament since 2012. He was on the 3rd Hole of the Del Mar Country Club course in Rancho Santa Fe. From 181 yards out with a 6 iron, Connie hit his ball, but didn’t see it go in. Two volunteers from Seacrest Village witnessed the ace and cheered to tell the foursome consisting of longtime friends Al Olsen, Gary Smolin, Paul Stubbs and Connie Salios.

It was a very exciting day for the 130 golfers and tennis players who participated in the annual tournament presented by The William Gumpert Foundation which raised more than $160,000 this year. Proceeds from “Take a Swing for Seniors” will support the provision of charitable care for residents of Seacrest Village.

Tournament winners include Maria Chan, Steve Cusato, Angus McDonald and Toby Taitano representing City National Bank in first place for golf; Danny Wax, Marshall Wax, Glenn Goodstein and Steve Ludwig representing Forelinx in second place for golf; Ann and Steven Kavy tied for first place in tennis; Dennis Lavine in second place for tennis. Contest winners are Connie Salios who hit the hole-in-one for Closest to the Pin, Jenny Liu for Longest Drive and Jeff Foudy for Straightest Drive. Phyllis Levin won the sold out raffle drawing for 6-nights in a 2-Bedroom Villa for either Sirena del Mar in Cabo San Lucas or Northstar Lodge in Lake Tahoe sponsored by Welk Resorts. This year’s committee was led by co-chairs, Devin Chodorow and Gary Pollak, and included members, Earl Altshuler, Mary Epsten, Robert Haimsohn and Kevin Wunderly. •

Before dinner, guests enjoyed cocktails, tray-passed hors d’oeuvres such as Truffle Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Korean Glazed Sesame Chicken, Wonton Chips with Ahi Tartare & Wasabi Caviar, and more. Robin Israel, Vice President of Philanthropy for Seacrest Village, and Pamplemousse Grille Owner/Executive Chef Jeffrey Strauss, welcomed the guests and thanked them for their support of the Resident Assistance Fund. chef of the acclaimed Pamplemousse Grille.

First course included a melon salad with crispy goat cheese, mache, toasted pine nuts and baby arugula, dressed with aged balsamic vinegar. Second course featured a duo of Colorado rack of lamb & confit of duck with mélange of market vegetables, or basil roasted sea bass with asparagus polenta cake and roasted tri-colored carrots and sauce antiboise. A Meyer lemon tart with coconut meringue & mixed berry compote was served for dessert.

This was the 16th annual 211 Club celebration. Many in attendance have been a part of this dedicated group for all or most of the previous fifteen years. And each year new ones join, as they too have a commitment and concern for the elderly who have no one or nowhere to turn to for help. 100% of the funds raised through the Resident Assistance Fund go directly to meet the housing and care needs of residents of Seacrest Village. •

… with Lee Begun

Lee Begun's Seacrest story begins in 2005, when she and her beloved

husband Al moved into Independent Living at the Encinitas campus. They

lived here happily together for five years. After she lost Al, to help overcome

the grief and loneliness, she decided to do something to help others. She

had been a volunteer much of her life before moving to Seacrest Village, so it

was a natural transition to help those in her community once again.

Lee volunteers in the morning in the Leichtag Family Assisted Living

Residence. She visits with the residents one-on-one in their apartments,

sharing life’s moments with them, touching their hearts, laughing with them

and making friends. She remembers each one’s birthday and sends a card

with good wishes. With many, she has met their families as well. When you

meet Lee, you are quickly drawn to her… she exudes kindness, compassion

and empathy. Time with her is a treasure.

Lee felt she could do even more to help others, so she added visits to the

residents in the Goldberg Healthcare Center to her volunteer agenda. She

now visits them in the afternoon, after leaving assisted living. Again, she

visits one-on-one with the residents, giving each her special attention and

time. They share stories, they laugh, they cry, they hold hands… each visit is

different and meaningful.

One special experience Lee shared is about a woman (we’ll call her Sharon)

she met in Assisted Living who did not speak; made no conversation at all.

Lee would spend time with her, and talk with her anyway, to encourage her,

to show compassion. Sharon moved to the Healthcare Center when her

“Being a

volunteer

enriches my life

and brings

many rewards.”

needs required a higher level of care.

Of course, Lee continued to visit her. A

big change has occurred though. Now

when Lee visits, Sharon speaks with her,

tells her stories, shares family milestones,

and they laugh together. When its time

for Lee to go, Sharon always says “thank

you for coming”.

This is one example of the benefits

that a volunteer receives. Lee says that

she feels she is making a significant

contribution, that it enriches her life and

“On behalf of my brothers and I, we write with heartfelt gratitude for all

the generous years of philanthropic courtesies. Your actions enabled

my parents to live out their lives in an oasis of love, care and dignity

provided by the Seacrest Family.

There was not a day that Dad was not aware of this special privilege. It

was indeed a blessing to my parents and all of our family.

We will forever be indebted to you for your many kindnesses.“

—The Family of Mr. & Mrs. A.

We sincerely thank you for your devotion, compassion and

tireless commitment to dignified care during our mother’s time

at Seacrest Village. It is with much sadness that we write this

letter, but also much love, which is the gift she gave to each of us.

In her years at Seacrest, she was surrounded by so many friends,

who quickly became her extended family. We felt that love each

time we visited. In fact, during the time she lived at Seacrest, the

word she most commonly used to describe things was ‘beautiful’,

which she said in a way that sounded as musical as her life was,

resonating with pure joy.

After she became ill, we learned through the care she received

at Goldberg Healthcare Center that it takes a village to help

someone pass peacefully. The entire staff was attentive not only

to our mother’s needs and care, but to the family’s as well.

Mom had enough love in her heart to share with everyone,

and she taught us that leaving this earth, as sad as it is, can

be beautiful. We like to think that she and her husband, A. are

somewhere over the rainbow playing beautiful music together

again. We’ll feel her joy with us forever, and we’re forever

grateful for the life she lived at Seacrest Village.”

With love and appreciation,

—Beloved family of M.C.

Glancing around the dining room there are memories of faces in all the places where they used to be.

For some, here much longer than we, there are memories of others in the spaces now filled by you and me.

So let’s give a cheer for all of us who are still here!

Let’s keep moving, Let’s keep laughing.

Let’s be giving kind words, big hugs, and all the love that we can… to everyone here, every woman and every man.

May we long continue to meet together and eat together, sit together and knit together, walk together and talk together.

And yes, occasionally bitch together. May we bend together and stretch together, followed by a good kvetch together.

Here’s to Book Club, Rummy-Q and Points of View. Here’s to Bingo, Poker and Exercise. Here’s to Happy Hour, Shabbat and holiday celebrations. Thank goodness there’s such a lot!

Here’s to a great staff that keeps it all going. THANK YOU!

Here’s to Seacrest Village, our home, for although we don’t always show it, we all do know it.

You are always there for us, and you really do care for us.

How lucky we are, at our very slow pace, to live here in Seacrest’s warm embrace.

THE LONGEST DAYNu-Stepping to End Alzheimer'sJune 21, the longest day of the year, was chosen by the Alzheimer’s Association as a day to raise awareness and funds to help in the fight against this terrible disease.

Seacrest residents and staff came together to participate as a team in the Nu-Step challenge. Nu-Step is a specialized piece of equipment that is perfect for older adults; it is a seated “stepper” so it's easier on joints, especially if one has arthritis. The equipment was set up on our beautiful Annette’s Village Square, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. We exercised, ate healthy snacks, drank fruit smoothies, played games and had a fun-filled day of life-enriching activities.

The Esther & Bud Fischer Fitness Center team, led by Lori Officer, designed a day of special events, oversaw the Nu-stepping equipment to keep everyone safe, and made sure everyone got to be a part of this great event. A total of $1,000 was raised for the Alzheimer’s Association! •
