WOMEN IN BUSINESS 2012 1 NEUROSURGERY DEMANDS COURAGE, confidence and calm under pressure. For Dr. Lori Summers, one of few female neurosurgeons, it is a rewarding mix of patient relationships and challenging cases. In 2009-2010, Dr. Summers, a Commander in the U.S. Navy, was deployed as a trauma neurosurgeon for Operation Enduring Freedom/ Operation Iraqi Freedom. Serving those injured in combat was a humbling experience. “I left my tour very grateful to our soldiers, sailors and airmen who sacrifice so much for our country. It was truly a life-changing experience. I feel honored to have been allowed the opportunity to take care of so many heroes.” After returning from active duty, Dr. Summers resumed her northshore practice with a dual mission of excellent patient care and open communication between doctor/patient. The ability to remain levelheaded and calm while performing advanced, often lifesaving surgeries, and her compassion and connection with her patients are key to fulfilling her mission. Her down-to-earth manner and communication skills help patients to share their questions and concerns. She says, “Most patients I see—whether they experience a trauma, degenerative disc disease or a malignancy, are afraid. They need the opportunity to ask questions so they can better understand their situation.” Dr. Summers grew up on a ranch, and horses are still her passion. As a supporter of the Louisiana Horse Rescue Association, she does for injured and abandoned horses what she does for people—gets them back to a full, active life. She also enjoys playing polo with the New Orleans Polo Club. 15770 Paul Vega MD Drive, Suite 206, Hammond, 419-7767. 7015 Hwy. 190 E. Service Rd., Suite 201, Covington. summersneurosurgery.com. NEUROSURGERY DEMANDS COURAGE, confidence and calm under

pressure. For Dr. Lori Summers, one of few female neurosurgeons, it is a

rewarding mix of patient relationships and challenging cases.

In 2009-2010, Dr. Summers, a Commander in the U.S. Navy, was

deployed as a trauma neurosurgeon for Operation Enduring Freedom/

Operation Iraqi Freedom. Serving those injured in

combat was a humbling experience. “I left my tour

very grateful to our soldiers, sailors and airmen who sacrifice so much for

our country. It was truly a life-changing experience. I feel honored to have

been allowed the opportunity to take care of so many heroes.”

After returning from active duty, Dr. Summers resumed her

northshore practice with a dual mission of excellent patient care and open

communication between doctor/patient. The ability to remain levelheaded

and calm while performing advanced, often lifesaving surgeries, and

her compassion and connection with her patients are key to fulfilling

her mission. Her down-to-earth manner and communication skills help

patients to share their questions and concerns. She says, “Most patients

I see—whether they experience a trauma, degenerative disc disease or a

malignancy, are afraid. They need the opportunity to ask questions so they

can better understand their situation.”

Dr. Summers grew up on a ranch, and

horses are still her passion. As a supporter of the Louisiana Horse Rescue

Association, she does for injured and abandoned horses what she does for

people—gets them back to a full, active life. She also enjoys playing polo

with the New Orleans Polo Club.
