Seventeen generous walk sponsors, food and transportation sponsors and donations from many who decided not to brave the snow accounted for the success of the walk.

Thank You to more than 100 participants, volunteers and sponsors!

The 3rd Annual SANE Walk on April 3rd raised more than $4,000 to support the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program. The money will be used for supplies, training and staff salaries to continue the 24/7/365 SANE program.

Fifty-two hearty souls walked “Across the Tundra” as the route along the recreational path in a spring snowstorm was renamed. Every two minutes during the walk, the SANE nurses rang a bell to remind us that one sexual assault occurs approximately every two minutes in the United States.

Hot soup and bread was a welcome treat at the end of the walk in the hospital Café. The spirit of camaraderie was complemented by the music and songs of Randall McKinnon. Hot chocolate and coffee were the beverages of choice as the walkers warmed up after the chilly morning walk.

Donor Spotlight – Alpine Bank

Dr. Warren Johnson’s presentation focused on “Cardiac Health in the High Country” that was followed with a question and answer session. Paul Chodkowski, CEO of St. Anthony Summit Medical Center provided an overview of the services available at our award-winning Medical Center.

Alpine Bank recently presented the Foundation with a check to fulfill part of their three-year generous pledge to the 10 Bed Expansion project at the hospital. Larry Reavis, Alpine Bank Regional President, hands the check to Deb Edwards, Foundation President and Chief Development Officer, with Mark Martin-Williams, new VP/Branch Manager Breckenridge; Linda Lichtendahl, Foundation Executive Assistant; and Elisabeth Lawrence, Alpine Bank Regional Marketing Coordinator, looking on.

Alpine Bank has been a sponsor at Dancing with the Mountain Stars since the beginning of the event, in addition to supporting the expansion fund and providing past executive leadership on the Foundation Board. We are grateful for the ongoing support of this outstanding business in our community.

House Calls

Education Receptions

In March, the Foundation started a new program called House Calls. Doctors are making “house calls” to provide education on a variety of healthcare topics.

Board Member Carolyn Sachs and her husband Alan Ciamporcero hosted the first reception at their home in The Highlands at Breckenridge. They invited a group of their friends and neighbors to learn more about the hospital, the Foundation and Summit Cardiology.

Over refreshments provided by the hospital Café, Alan and Carolyn’s guests had a chance to not only learn about health and wellness services in our community, but to mingle and catch up with friends and neighbors. Guests enjoyed a “healthy” evening in the informal and comfortable setting of the Ciamporcero-Sachs home. They savored “Heart Healthy” food and enlightened conversation.

One guest commented to Dr. Johnson that she had no idea that echocardiograms were available in Summit County. She said that she and her husband had been driving to Denver for the last few years, but were excited to find out that their needs could be met at Summit Cardiology.

Board Member Spotlight

“Drink well and drink often,” said Deb Edwards as she presented donors with a

commemorative insulated cup in recognition of their gifts to the Foundation.

A resident of Frisco since 1994, Dr. Allan Schutt is a retired Medical Oncologist. He had a 30-year career in Rochester, Minnesota where he served as an Associate Professor of Oncology at the Mayo Medical School and a consultant in Medical Oncology at the Mayo Clinic. Allan has served on the foundation board since its inception and was a member of the Flight For Life Hangar Capital Campaign Cabinet. He serves on the Summit County Community Care Clinic board, the Bristlecone Foundation board, is a member of the Summit County Rotary Club, the Program Chair for Tale Spinners and a nine-year Copper Mountain Ambassador volunteer. He holds a part-time position as Medical Auditor for the Cancer Trials Support Unit, a program supported by the National Cancer Institute. Allan’s interests include skiing, tennis, travel, reading and wine collecting. Allan and his wife Marcia, a retired OR nurse and current volunteer at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center, have three sons and five grandchildren.

Radiology Director Valerie Lash shares brunch with Marge and Jerry Gavenda and John Schlipf.

On January 30, more than 80 donors who gave $500 or more to the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation and/or to the Bristlecone Foundation in 2010 were honored at the 3rd Annual Circle of Caring brunch. The Raven at Three Peaks Golf Club was the perfect setting for the event, affording views of the golf course and surrounding peaks while bright sunshine warmed the winter morning.

Jerry James, representing the Health Foundation, reflected on how much the hospital has grown and accomplished during the five years since its opening in December 2005. Hospital CEO Paul Chodkowski presented an overview of Centura Health 2020, a vision for the future of healthcare. Three programs supported and funded by the Foundation were featured to show how our hospital is meeting the challenges outlined in the Centura 2020 plan. Amanda Soychak, Centura Trauma Strategy Outreach Coordinator, explained how we are developing Systems of Care with our trauma services. Jill Boyle, Emergency Department Director, talked about Moving Upstream with injury prevention services through ThinkFirst and Safe Kids. Valerie Lash, Radiology Director, described how we are Strengthening Our Foundation with new technology and announced that Nuclear Medicine imaging will soon be available at the hospital.

At the end of the luncheon each donor received a small token of appreciation for their support. A reusable drinking glass will remind everyone that staying hydrated is essential to wellness and the prevention of illness as we move closer to the 2020 new paradigm for healthcare.

Hospital Board Member Dr. Don Parsons heads the table and enjoys meeting new donors.

We invite you to join us in the Circle of Caring. Call Deb Edwards at 970-668-6906 to discuss your 2011 gift to the Foundation.
