Executive Summary

The Prince’s Trust International Leadership Programme (ILP) is an innovative 12-month opportunity which aims to develop leadership skills, inspire thinking about global issues and equip young people aged 25-35 to take action and make a long-lasting and positive impact in their local communities.

The International Leadership Programme was first established in 2009 as part of Mosaic, a charity also founded by HRH The Prince of Wales. This year’s ILP is the first to be delivered by Prince’s Trust International.

The reputation and stature of the ILP is growing each year; this year over 7,200 applications from 22 countries were received and narrowed down to 54 delegates. Prince’s Trust International works strategically with global partners to ensure that we can recruit delegates from diverse backgrounds, thereby having a greater impact on key global challenges facing the international community.

The aims of ILP are:

→ To develop leadership ability and an aspiration to be an agent of change; → To develop an understanding of key global issues and inspire positive thinking to address them; → To equip delegates to become an active and positive part of their communities.

The ILP began with a Summit held from 12-24th March in Windsor, in the United Kingdom. The Summit took place at two venues: the Heathrow Marriott Windsor and Cumberland Lodge. Delegates from 17 countries participated in concentrated residential training that offered an open and collaborative space to share their ideas and work together to develop innovative action plans to address issues affecting their local communities. At the conclusion of the Summit, delegates returned home to finalise and deliver their actions plans that focus on a range of issues including: global poverty, sustainability, and bringing communities together.

ILP 2017 EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND ACTION PLANS IT’S ABOUT UNDERSTANDING A WORLD OTHER THAN MY OWN

Thank you to our partners

We would like to sincerely thank our partners for their support and participation in the inaugural ILP delivered by Prince’s Trust International.

Their generous support has enabled 54 young leaders from 17 countries to begin their ILP journey by attending the ILP Summit in Windsor, United Kingdom. Through this two week residential training opportunity delegates developed their own models of leadership and tools to manage change and structure their own personal development. Delegates also learnt how to effectively define, develop and implement their action plans, and were introduced to a network of global mentors who will guide them over the next 12 months.

Delegates will now focus on implementing their action plans which will address issues including: global poverty, sustainability and bringing communities together.

Thank you, as this would not be possible without your generous support.

Recruitment of Delegates

The reputation of the ILP continues to grow each year; for ILP 2017 over 7,200 applications were received. From this pool 180 applicants, from 22 countries, were invited to interview. Of these applicants, 54 delegates from 17 countries attended and participated in the ILP Summit.

The interview panels were kindly supported by Prince’s Trust International’s in-country recruitment partners including: the King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD), INJAZ Jordan, Turquoise Mountain, The Bangladesh Youth Leadership Centre, The Foreign & Commonwealth Office, The British Council, The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS), Crescent Petroleum, Kamal Exchange, Prudence Foundation and Etihad Airways. The panels assessed applicants against four selection criteria:

→ An aspiration to be an agent of change; → Leadership ability; → Awareness of global issues; → Positive thinking.

For the majority of delegates, the cost of travel alone would have been prohibitive. We are extremely grateful to Etihad Airways, the ILP’s Official Airline Partner, for providing return flights for many delegates so they could attend the Summit in the United Kingdom.

From where have our delegates been recruited?

Despite resistance from his family and cultural barriers, Towfique founded a not-for-profit organisation that works as a social enterprise to promote youth development.

Towfique knew that to transform his organisation to become the leading youth change making platform and reach the

next level in terms of sustainability and impact he needed help. Having identified the ILP 2017 as the catalyst for change, he has

been rejuvenated by the energy of fellow young leaders, and inspired and moved by global leaders such as Kailash Satyarthi.

He gained new insights into how to move his organisation forward – including how to position his project through the art of storytelling – and is now equipped, with the support of his mentor, to formulate and deliver a new strategic plan for his organisation.

Programme Overview

Designing Effective Programmes - Bevis KapasoA vital component of the ILP is for each delegate to develop and deliver an action plan in their local communities to address issues including: global poverty, sustainability and bringing communities together. The Summit provided sessions to assist delegates to effectively define, develop and implement their action plans through hands-on workshops delivered by monitoring and development specialist Mr Bevis Kapaso.

These highly interactive sessions equipped delegates with a problem/solution analysis approach to designing effective programmes and initiatives. In addition delegates were taught how to develop simple monitoring plans for measuring progress of their action plans.

BEVIS TAUGHT ME NOT TO START MY PROJECT BY LOOKING AT THE SOLUTION BUT TO START BY LOOKING AT THE PROBLEM.

- BRENDA MARERI, KENYA

Programme Overview

Developing a Model of Leadership - Pearn KandolaOver the course of the Summit, delegates were challenged to understand and develop their own models of leadership and to structure their own personal development through sessions delivered by Pearn Kandola. These sessions were structured around three key facets of leadership: people, task and thought leadership. Through a range of interactive workshops, delegates were challenged to identify their strengths and weaknesses across these three areas. Delegates left these sessions with a deeper understanding of how leadership draws on a diversity of talent and resources, and how the most effective leaders make the most of the situations and people around them.

Bringing Communities Together - Anne Frank Trust UK and Cumberland Lodge

A key theme of this year’s Summit was ‘bringing communities together’. To understand and contextualise this theme the Anne Frank Trust UK delivered a session on prejudice and equipped delegates with the tools to create their own resources to tackle prejudice in their local communities. Cumberland Lodge delivered a session which encouraged delegates to reflect critically on ethical, moral and social issues outside their own field of study. The session explored notions of tolerance and respect, and examined the role of education in fostering creative critical thinking.

Kim’s desire to learn from others brought her to the ILP Summit, where she learnt from her peers and shared experiences. She has been running a successful NGO in Malaysia focused on providing education to refugees and a social enterprise by creating a platform for refugees to showcase their cooking skills to the local community.

Her project aims to create a better education system for refugees, that has an appropriate framework and curriculum, and to improve the quality of teachers, facilities and the educational structure and system. She also wants to incorporate sustainability and youth development into her action plan to ensure lasting effects. Her long term goal is to be able to offer a full curriculum to refugee students with vocational subject’s and enterprise opportunities e.g. cooking accounting, nursing etc. The ILP Summit has given Kim the training and confidence to move forward and the belief that she can achieve this over the next 12 months.

Overview of Programme

Project VisitsA distinct part of the Summit was enabling delegates to engage with thought-leaders from leading institutions and to engage with the work of the Prince’s Trust. Delegates attended the following events and field visits:

→ The Prince’s Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Celebrate Success Awards → The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies → Diamond Light Source

Delegates were able to witness first-hand the rewarding and life-changing work being delivered by the Prince’s Trust as guests at the Celebrate Success Awards.

Delegates visited the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, which provides a meeting point between the Islamic and Western worlds of learning. Delegates engaged with leading academics on the history of Islam in Asia, the spread of Islam to the East before discussing the differences and acceptances of Islamic norms between Africa and Asia.

In addition, delegates visited Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. Diamond Light Source is a multidisciplinary science and engineering facility studying a range of issues as diverse as fossils, jet engines, viruses and vaccines. Delegates participated in a workshop and tour to understand the key results the facility has achieved over the last five years and to understand how bringing scientific communities together can accelerate innovation and advance local livelihoods.

Five years ago, Khairul co-founded a social organisation delivering youth developmental training and motivation in Sarawak, Malaysia. The latest initiative which he is

working on is to help lower the high divorce rates among young couples in their municipality and wider society as

a whole. Khairul was drawn to ILP because he wanted to elevate his organisation to the next level by redesigning it to

be less dependent on public funding.

Through ILP, he has transformed his thinking and sharpened his skills which help him to crystallise his project ideas. The programme has taught him to take bolder actions to create and expand the networking necessary to run his proposed project and transform his organisation step by step.

Ratan knew he could be a good leader and has always had a social conscience, having worked enthusiastically on small scale for the betterment of his community during his career. As an ILP delegate Ratan made his first international journey and was amazed to meet so many like-minded young people from around the world. The whole experience changed him as a person and has widened his horizons, expanded his thought processes and perceptions. His preconceived notions of his peers have been broken and he can see no boundaries between delegates. Before the programme he was clear on his project but he was not confident that he could deliver it – this has changed. He was worried that as a leader he would not be able to convince others and could not achieve his objective but now he has increased confidence in his leadership and is determined to make a change.

Overview of Programme

Group Leaders and study groupsA distinctive and crucial part of the Summit is the study groups in which the delegates work. Comprising approximately 10-12 delegates, specifically allocated from different countries and backgrounds, these groups enable delegates to participate in cross-cultural and cross-gender dialogue and to work as a team to complete group tasks. The ILP is a unique opportunity for delegates of diverse nationalities, ethnicities, cultures and professional sectors to learn from one another.

Each group is led by a volunteer leader, recruited from the previous year’s cohort of delegates. The Group Leaders take a leadership role, providing pastoral care and oversight of a study group. They add enormous value by sharing their eperience of delivering successful Action Plans and explaining how ILP has benefitted the. Group Leaders make an invaluable contribution to the Summit and continue to act as a source of guidance to the delegates upon returning to their local communities.

THE GROUP LEADERS HAVE REALLY INSPIRED ME AS THEY HAVE GONE THROUGH THE PROGRAMME AND NOW THEY ARE LEADERS.

Next Steps

At the conclusion of the Summit delegates travelled back to their home countries to develop and implement their action plans. To support this process each delegate has been matched with a mentor who will support them over the next 12 months in refining and delivering their action plan.

Volunteer mentors are an important resource for ILP and will continue to give guidance, support and feedback to delegates once they have returned to their local communities. Mentors are asked to support delegates by providing a minimum of one hour per month to meet with their mentee, these meetings can occur via Skype, conference calls or face-to-face.

Both mentors and delegates have committed to developing a realistic and achievable plan with specific goals and milestones that can be measured every three months. At the conclusion of the Summit delegates and mentors agreed to:

→ By 30th April 2017 – Draft Action Plan submitted to Prince’s Trust International → By 30th April 2017 – First meeting with Mentor → By 1st June 2017 – Final Action Plan submitted to Prince’s Trust International → By 31st August 2017 – Six month report submitted → By 28th February 2018 – 12 month report submitted

Prince’s Trust International looks forward to reviewing and supporting each delegate’s Action Plan journey over the next 12 months.
