Lady-Crusaders on a missionBy NATE JONESThe Wellington Daily News

It was a historic year for the Welling-ton High School Lady-Crusaders bas-ketball team las season. They made itto the State tournament for the firsttime in their history, amassing a 21-3record in the process.

All of this without winning the ArkValley Chisholm Trail League, Div. IVtitle, which is definitely on the to-dolist in 2012-13.

Head Coach, Kevin Hackerott isstarting his fifth year at WHS and isleading a several returning players intobattle this season.

Kailey Jenkins, 5'7'' senior guard av-eraged eight points and five reboundsin 2011-12, Megan Amrein, 5'6'' seniorforward averaged two and a half pointsand four rebounds, both saw startingminutes last season.

Savannah Cornejo, 5'6'' senior guard,Shanlyn Hefley, 5'6'' senior guard, andSydney Shields, 5'9'' senior forwardwill also be key players coming back forWHS. Hackerott's squad also wel-comes four juniors and a sophomore tothe varsity line-up this year.

The coach said his senior leaders area tough-minded bunch that plays welltogether, with high expectations, theteam is on a mission.

“We have unfinished business in win-ning a conference title. This team hashigh expectations, despite losing sometalented players," Hackerott said. "Weneed to play with a chip on our shoul-der.”

The season starts for WHS at theKingman Tournament on Dec. 4, timesare still to be determined.

They won the South Central Bor-der League a year ago, overall theywere 17-5, they are the ArgoinaLady-Raiders.

Lead by Head Coach, Dixie Brew-ster, in her seventh year at AHS andher team is riddled with upperclass-men.

Devon Allen, 5’6’’ senior, Jaci Pee-toom, 5’7’’ senior, Haylea Hessman,5’10’’ junior, and Shelby McCoy, 5’6’’junior are the returning starters.They will be paired with other re-turning lettermen Cori Drouhard,5’7’’ junior, Olivia Brantly, 5’6’’ jun-

ior, Faith Gaddie, 5’7’’ sophomore,and Rebecca Fitch, 5’5’’ sophomore.

Brewster speaks very highly of hersquad’s work ethic and competitivespirit come game time, saying thereis a very strong family atmosphere atAHS. She added that the team lead-ers exemplify this.

“Seniors Jaci Peetoom and DevonAllen are experienced players. Theirwork ethic and mental toughnessmake them great leaders for ourteam,” Brewster said. “Haylea Hess-man is a versatile player inside andout. Our ability to drive and scorehas improved. Our defensive effortwill be strong.”

Belle Plaine begins new chapterBy NATE JONESThe Wellington Daily News

There was no place like home in2011-12 for the Belle PlaineHigh School Lady-Drag-ons, where they were 3-1.The squad went 1-4 on theroad and was 4-6 onneutral floors. Add itall together and BPHSfinished 8-11 over-all, and 5-5 inthe CentralPlains League.

Caldwell team full of promise after State appearanceBy NATE JONESThe Wellington Daily News

For the Caldwell Lady-Bluejays,last year was an exciting season. Itended in the first round of the 1ADiv. 1 State Tournament. They alsofinished second in the South CentralBorder League in 2011-12.

This season is full of promise aswell with the offensive core return-ing.

Kambree York, 5’6’’ junior guard iscoming back with her 10.2 pointsper game, 4.2 rebounds and 3.9steals per game. She was HonorableMention SCBL and All-State lastyear. Fellow junior, and second teamSCBL performer, Tyann Isaacs, 5’9’’

forward will also be back, along with6’0’’ center, Rachel Arnold, junior,and Lexie Rice, 5’6’’ junior guard.

The Lady-Bluejays have depth atthe guard positions which is a valu-able asset for the team this season.However, there is a lack of depth in-side for CHS and will need to shoota better field-goal percentage to besuccessful in 2012-13.

Caldwell also has a blistering pre-holiday schedule. They will be on theroad Nov. 30 in Kiowa, Kan. againstSouth Barber at 6 p.m.

“There’s a lot of good young play-ers to work with,” said Head Coach,Cory Ward. “If they continue to im-prove, the future looks good.”

A 6-3 league recorda year ago was goodenough for a runner-up finish in the Cen-tral Plains League forthe Conway SpringsLady-Cardinals bas-ketball squad.

The team and sev-enth year Head Coach,Ryan Rusco hope toimprove that finishalong with the 15-8overall record fromlast season. With fourreturning starters, allseniors, CSHS has agood chance of accom-plishing that.

Those seniors are

Chelsea Ebenkamp,CPL first team lastseason, Alyssa Smith,CPL second team,Brittney May, CPLhonorable mention,and Stacy Sones. TheLady-Cards have twomore key players com-ing back, ShirleneZoglmann, senior, andSara Echelberry, soph-omore.

"We bring a lot of ex-perience back withfour returning startersand two more with ex-tensive varsity experi-ence," Rusco said. "Allfour returning startershave been starters atsome point every year

since their sophomoreyears with Ebenkampand May playing sincetheir freshmen year."Last season, Smith av-eraged a team high 7.1points per game, fol-lowed closely byEbenkamp with 6.9.

Rusco added that histeam as already had todeal with injury issuesdeeper in the depthchart, and is inter-ested in seeing howspts seven through 10develop. The first testfor Conway Springswill be Friday, Nov. 30when they host leagueopponent MedicineLodge at 6 p.m.

The theme of the Lady-Wildcats2011-12 season was .500. The team was9-9 overall (3-3 at home, 3-3 on theroad, 3-3 neutral arenas), and 5-5 inSouth Central Border League compe-tition.

Head Coach, Kadee Wheeler and herteam will look to break the .500 barrierby starting 1-0 when they competeagainst Bluestem High School on Dec.8.

For the basketballworld, a new season hasarrived and for the SouthHaven Girls Basketballteam, a newhead coach hasarrived.

Eric Adamstakes over atSHHS, with a team that went13-10 last year, and wound upwith a second place trophy intheir sub-state tournament.

Adams also has five returningstarters suiting up.

The Lady-Cards have good sizeand overall team quickness, butwill look to improve on theirperimeter and free throw shoot-ing.

“With so much returning, ourexpectations are high,” Adamssaid. “It’s a great group of upperclassmen mixed with some verytalented newcomers, we are look-ing to have a very successful sea-son.”

With a rollercoaster of aregular season in 2011-12,the Wellington Crusadersfinished strong bringinghome the runner-up hard-ware from the Sub-Statetournament in Clearwater.

Head Coach BrianBuchanan is starting year10 of his WHS coachingcareer. The Crusaderswent 9-14 last season andhave a plethora of seniorson the roster.

Leading Wellington on

the court will be AlexWeiss, 6’1’’ senior, BrianPeck, 6’5’’ senior, NickBecker, 6’1’’ senior, LoganWoodbridge, 6’1’’ senior,Ethan Carroll, 6’1’’ senior,Noah Wolff, 6’1’’ senior,Trevor Nance, 6’4’’ sopho-more, and Colin Reichen-berger, 5’11’’ sophomore –they are all returning tothe starting line-up . Sen-iors Braden Miles, TylerMiles and Ian Crossmanare new to the varsity teamthis year.

Depth is the biggest

asset for the Crusaders in2012-13. Buchanan saidhis team will look to im-prove its speed, and bemore consistent when itcomes to scoring the ball.

“Good group of playersreturning for the Welling-ton Boys Basketball Team,”the coach said. “The play-ers understand the levelthat they will have to playat, and what is expected ofthem each and everynight.” Wellington’s seasonwill start on Dec. 4 at theKingman Tournament.

Boys Head Basketball Coach, BobAlmanza at Argonia High School isentering his seventh season with theRed Raiders. He and the team arehoping it goes better than his sixth,when AHS finished 3-18 and at thebottom of the South Central BorderLeague.

Almanza is going to lean on a coregroup of seniors to turn thingsaround.

Hunter Gaddie, 5’9,”and GarettThompson, 5’11” are the returningsenior starters. Lance Conklin, 6’0”and Kolton Dickerson, 5’9” are sen-iors letterman returning from lastyear.

“Our senior class will have to pro-vide solid leadership and help de-velop underclassmen if we are to besuccessful,” Almanza said. “We alsowill have to take pride in our de-fense, keeping teams under 40points a game.”

Raiders aim toimprove 3-18record

For the Belle Plaine Dragons, it's all about the future.New Head Coach, James Zimmer, inherited a teamthat went 6-15 in 2011-12, in league play the Dragonswent 1-9. Zimmer and crew are working on changingall of that.

"We have a large group of kids who are working as agroup to better the Belle Plaine High School Basket-ball Program," he said. Zimmer has eight seniors onboard that will go to battle on the hard-wood in 2012-13.

Quay Hervey, Caleb Throop, Bryson Gann, JacobCallanan, Gage Schneider, Austin Johnson, DustinHelms, and Zach Thornbrough. Also on the varsityroster is one junior, James Shepherd, and five sopho-mores. The coach expressed he is looking forward toworking with this team, and has set expectations forthem this season, a season that starts Friday night,Nov. 30 at Bluestem.

"My expectations for this season are to continuallyimprove in every aspect of basketball with a focus onfundamentals and playing basketball the right way,"Zimmer said. "We will establish measureable goals totrack our progress as a team and at the completion ofthe season these goals should explain the successes weachieve."

Caldwell High SchoolHead Basketball CoachDaniel Jantz hopes histeam will benefit fromtime. His team was veryyoung and inexperienceda season ago. He says hisBluejays should be muchimproved this year.

“The guysplayed muchbetter late lastyear and playedsome very goodteams down tothe wire,”Jantzsaid. “So we will buildon that for this season.”Time will also help healsome key injuries thathave already popped upfor CHS.

Last season, Caldwellwas 5-16 and lost toFlinthills in the firstround of sub-state. Ex-pectations are heightened

as the team lost very fewkey players.

Returning to the courtare 5’11’’ Colton Whaley,6’1’’ Cole Dierking, 6’2’’Devan York, 5’9’’ DarinWard, and 6’0’’ Alec Web-ster. Other returning let-termen are TrentKendrick, Kaden Halling,and Sam Wencel.

The team does lack sizewhich could hurt them,

especially when itcomes to re-

sive presence to thecourt, and a balancedscoring attack.

Caldwell opens up theseason at South BarberHigh School, in Kiowa,Kan. on Nov. 30. On Dec.4, Caldwell begins host-ing the annual BorderQueen Tournament.

The defending Central PlainsLeague champs reside in Con-way Springs. The Cardinals hada good season a year ago with a18-6 record, making it to the 3AState Tournament, losing toSeneca-Nemaha Valley in theopening round, 51-46.

Seniors Travis Echelberry(6'8'' Forward), and DaltonMurphy (5'9'' Guard) are tworeturning starters CSHS plansto lean on this season. RyanPauly, 6'2'' senior, Tanner Wood,6'5'' senior, and Ross Ra-sumssen, 6' junior will also fac-tor into the Cards' game plan.

The last time the Oxford Wildcatswere on the basketball court, they losta nail-bitter, 43-42 to Pratt-Skyline inthe first round of their 2ASub-State tournament.This season, seventh yearHead Coach, Kyle Greenhopes to see his team im-prove on the 12-9 overallrecord his team had lastyear.

"If they take care of the littlethings, the big things will take care ofthemselves," Green said. Charged withthe task of improvement are three re-turning starters, Gage Burkes, 6'3'' sen-ior, Garret Kennedy, 6'4'' senior, andAlex Jones, 5'll'' senior. There are alsosix more returning lettermen from lastyear.

Green says his team has good sizeand should be a force on defense.

"They are a very hard working groupand they will flat out defend," he said."They play well together and are just agood bunch to be around and coach."

On the offensive side, the aforementioned three returning

starters together averaged 10.6points per game in 2011-12.

Burkes also set a school recordhis last year for career rebounds,

and he owns two of the top five sin-gle season rebounding records at OHS.He has a chance to become the school'sall-time leading scorer this season aswell.

Basketball season gets underway inOxford, when the school hosts theWildcat Classic Tournament, startingon Dec. 3, junior varsity action beginsat 4 p.m.

Wildcats will win with defense

If experience waswealth, the South HavenCardinals basketball teamwould be rich.

Three returningstarters, all seniors, all6’2’’, Austin Showman,Hunter Ray, and AndrewLowe. There are also sixmore returninglettermen, they are alsoall seniors – Bryce Byers,Lane Cully, Justin Harris,Levi Schuster, JamesMoreland, and ChaseUpton.

Head Coach, DarrenMcDorman is enteringhis 11th year at South

Haven, coming off of a20-3 record in 2011-12.The Cards won the SouthCentral Boarder Leaguelast season, with a perfect10-0 record in leagueplay, however they failedto make it out of theirsub-state bracket.

“We return 10 of our top12 players and return ourtop three players fromlast year. Our strengthwill be experience anddepth with a lot of sen-iors,” McDorman said.“Our top 3 players startedon our 1A-D1 State Run-ner-up team in the 2010-11 season and got beat lastseason by Udall in the

sub-state finals.” Udallwas the State Runner-uplast year. The coach hashigh expectations for hissenior leaders.

“Austin Showman,Hunter Ray, and AndrewLowe have played varsitysince they were Freshmanand have started sincethey were Sophomores.Austin will be return asthe starter at point guardfor the third straight yearand the team’s leadingscorer. Austin will be oneof the top players in 1A-D1.”
