Sun City Yokohama
Sun City Yokohama is a continuum of care retirement
community using a site above Yokohama that had
formerly been an explosives manufacturing facility.
SWA’s role began with a feasibility study for the
development. Together with the selected design
architect, a site plan sensitive to the natural character
and charm of this very unique site was proposed,
resulting in two six-story buildings with a total of 480
independent living units and a 120-bed care center.
The natural beauty of the site with preserved open
space on three sides, makes Sun City Yokohama one
of the most unique senior residential communities
in all of Japan. The hilltop setting, woodland edges,
and sensitive building layout, in conjunction with
the introduced landscape reinforce the “park” image
and presents Sun City Yokohama as a landmark senior
community.
