Social networking can take place
any day, any time, and any where. It
often takes place and you don’teven realize it. The information
gathered here isn’t supposed to be
only acted on in one time and
place, or even just for certain
individuals. It’s a collection of tips,
strategies, and ideas to guide you in
day to day social networking and
media efforts. You’ll find here eight short articles
covering web 2.0 tools such as
Twitter, and Facebook.
Networking, sharing, connecting,
and not making a fool of yourself
will all be addressed.
I’ve thrown in a few bonus articlesas well I believe you’ll find useful.
The tone ranges from light to
serious, but don’t take anything in
this book as gospel.

Appreciating your friends and
connections is the number one
priority. Let them know you
appreciate them. Show your
appreciation by giving them
something of value. That can be
as simple as a smile or a ‘thank
you’. It can also be something
relevant to their personal life.
Companies offer multiple
possibilities; coupons, offers,
collaborative social media
projects, collaborative real world
projects, and more.
As an individual, the real prize is
face time. I recommend making
time for face time with as many
of your friends and connections
as possible.
When you meet, make it
memorable. Listen to them. Let
them know you are honored to
know them.
Thank your followers

Twitter and Facebook don’t have
to just be chatting about the
weather or baseball. The
interaction can go beyond
tagging each other with list
writing or poking wars.
Networks are ultimately about
relationships.
The first step in building a
relationship is listening to the
other person. Listening is more
than observing the idle chatter
stream. Listening is an active
behavior.
How can you improve your
listening habits? First, read all of
the replies, DMs, and wall posts
you get. What? Read them, he
says? Yep, read them all! To the
sender, the update felt worth
sharing. There are golden nuggets
in there. Don’t neglect this
opportunity.
Second, to be an active listener,
follow someone’s stream of
updates. If you have an interest
or desire to build a relationship
with a contact, single out their
stream and read back through it.
Click the links, check out the
pictures, and listen to the music
they share. Is there a theme? Is
there a common thread of
thought?
Become an active
participant. Engage that contact
and ask them what’s going on.
You can prompt them by asking
how their last week or their last
day was. Or pick one of their
updates to comment on. Then
watch to see what comes back
to you.
Trust me. If you think your social
network is returning value based
on what you share, it will
multiply by how you listen.
Cultivate the relationships

@hdbbstephen shared another
great way to connect with folks
on your social networks, search.
I like to create searches for topics
that I am interested in on Twitter, to
see what people are saying. I go
look at their Tweets and reply when
I have something to add to the
conversation. I have found some
cool folks this way. I have also been
invited to write guest posts for their
outlet.
Search is a great method to not
only learn what’s being said
about your favorite topics, but
also lets you know who is talking
about it. The problem is that
most folks have never thought to
use search in this way.
Let’s look at one of your choices
starting with Twitter’s own
search: search.twitter.com.
It is really that simple. The search
will bring up tweets from most
current and work backwards in
time. Searching here is forgiving
of periods and the like, and does
better with words that aren’t
embedded. However, it does find
links with the supplied search
text. Where I’ve had the most
success is finding locals in the St.
Louis area. It’s also been useful
to find folks interested in my
favorite shows and hobbies.
Google is a valid second option
for searching on social networks
as all tweets are indexed.
There are other ways to find
great discussions and people onTwitter. Layered on top of
Twitter search is one of my
favorite tools,Tweetstats.com.
The Tweetstats Trend page is a
winning way to find out what’s
hot and from there who’s talking
about it. Want to find out who
the biggest talkers are on
Twitter, then try twitter_stats. It
shows the folks with the most
replies.
Returning to the basics, so
you’ve searched, and
@sallywhoseit is talking about
Jumbotron Physics, your favorite
topic. Now what? Do you just
jump in and say something about
the topic? Do you introduce
yourself first? Do you tweet
about them and hope for the
best?
My recommendation is that you
spend a couple of minutes to do
a few things first. One, check
their Twitter profile out. Maybe
they are a Jumbotron Physics
professor, a student, or just like
to ride jumbotrons. Knowing
this much will go a long way to
steering your future
conversation. Second, check out
their recent tweets. Was this a
one time update or comment?
Do they talk about this often?
A great way to check their
history is to go back to Twitter
search and add that person’s ID
to the search. Bang. You’ll know if
they are an expert, a wanna-be, a
fan, or just happened to be
making a joke.
From there it is a matter of
making the proper introduction.
Jump in and chat.
Notice I didn’t say follow them,
stalk them, or find their email
and drop them a note. Just chat.
And go away if they get creeped
out.
This week, take a few minutes to
search for some new contacts by
searching Twitter for your
favorite topics.
Search

In a previous article, I spoke
about social networking and how
vital listening is. Listening is good
but there comes the time when
you should reach out.
Connie Reece shared her
thoughts on this:
Twitter and Facebook
status updates and notes
move so fast that it’s
difficult to keep up with
what friends/followers are
doing. Periodically scan
your list and look for
people you haven’t
interacted with in a while.
Send them a Facebook
message or write on their
Wall to say hello. Give them
a shoutout on Twitter or
send a DM to let them
know you are thinking
about them
I can’t tell you how many folks I
follow that I lose track of. It’s not
that their tweets or posts get
dropped or lost, it’s that they
tweet seldom enough that we
end up missing each other. It’s
not dramatic but it does happen.
Tweetdeck provides a great way
to manage this for Twitter. I’ve
set up Tweetdeck with a column
for my peers and influencers.
These are folks I don’t want to
miss even if they don’t post
often. As long as Tweetdeck is
open, I can scroll back as far as
I’d like. Another feature of
Tweetdeck is their search
columns. You can create a search
on someone’s ID and you have
an instant history of theirtweets.
Facebook provides a similar
feature, Friend List Feeds. These
are customizable friend lists.
Create one for your friends and
you have an instant update
stream or feed for just that
listing of friends.
I’ve created feeds for my Twitter
and SOBCon buddies. Also, I’ve
got a local list for folks in the
greater St. Louis area.
The point of this is for you to
get involved. This is your window
into those folks’ online lives. It
will be the way you can talk with
them about the topics on their
minds.
This is a real value add. Your
contacts don’t always want to
chat about the weather or
politics. Or maybe they do. This
will be the quick way for you to
find out what they are up to and
be able to jump in at the right
time.
If you were to take a look
through my recent posts and
tweets, you’d see I’ve been
struggling with medical issues,
the Geek Squad and organizing
get-together events.
What are your friends talking
about?

We’ve talked about engagement
and contact, sharing and
searching, but we’ve not talked
about ‘what’ to talk about. I’ll be
honest with you; my first
inclination wasn’t to share fun
stuff. I’m not a joke master; I
honestly can’t remember punch
lines. With that in mind, I’ve
actually found that even I can be
successful sharing fun things on
my social networks.
Tips for sharing fun stuff:
- Share stuff that you
wouldn’t be embarrassed
about having your kids
read
- Share stuff that you
wouldn’t be embarrassed
about having your mom
read
- Then everything else
goes!
Short tip list huh? Well, I wanted
to get those easy ones out of the
way.
pictures - like the one to the
left - they can make people laugh
and smile – they can always be a
winner. Photos of kids have an
‘aw’ factor that you don’t get out
of photos of yourself.
videos - there are tons of these
shared everyday - don’t bother
creating your own unless you’ve
got the time - share the funniest
thing you’ve seen today.
stories - now, these are best
when told about you - even
better, if they are short. Short
doesn’t mean 2 pages. Short
means two paragraphs or less.
Some suggestions to go along
with these very short tips.
- Test out the humor onyour wife, kids, dog, etc.
first: if they don’t laugh
it’s not funny, don’t send
it
- Nudity does not equal
funny. Funny first, nudity
only if it fits
- Gross humor isn’t
automatically funny,
Remember funny first,
gross is a bonus
- Funny stuff with kids is
the best, and most likely
to go viral. Teens baring
their souls with poetry,
dance, or making music is
a close second
I hope this helps. Share the good
stuff!
Fun

Bloggers blog. Twitter buds
tweet. It’s all about
communicating. One is less
spontaneous than the other.
One is much shorter. None the
less, it’s someone saying
something.
The problem with either is that
you’ve been cursed with the
desire to shout something to the
world. Maybe you can no longer
stand the birds outside your
window. Perhaps you’ve suddenly
become a grandparent. It could
be about the car wreck that you
are recovering from. Whatever
the reason, you can no longer
NOT share it.
So you start up your blog, get a
social networking account or
two and you dive in. At first, even
with this deep passion, you
fumble with your words. You
don’t ‘get it’ at first. New friends
are hard to come by right along
with your word struggles.
One day though, it just clicks.
You’re writing, communicating,
sharing, and the flood gates
open. You feel like no one can
stop you. A hundred folks follow
you online, and a few dozen
catch your blog every day. Things
are better than you would have
thought possible even a week
before. It’s a slice of heaven.
BAM! They start on you. Oh,
trust me; if they haven’t yet, it’s
soon to be. It’s the ones that
seem like friends that will do the
worst damage. The naysayers, the
second guessers, and the
‘experts’ are at your virtual
doorstep, and they’ve come to
share; “you’re doing it wrong!”
Wow! It hits you. You aren’t
making any money with your
blog. A thousand folks aren’t
following you. Are you seriously
still talking about your grandchild
and all of those experiences?
Sure you’re getting some
comments and links, but you
wake up to the fact that those
are just fellow grandparents.
They aren’t big wigs in the
blogging and social media world.
The question hits you between
the eyes, “What am I doing? How
did I get to this point?”
I’m here to tell you shut up that
talk now. STOP. SHUT IT.
STOP ALREADY.
Have you stopped?
No, seriously. Don’t stop the
social networking or theblogging. Do stop the beat down
that you are putting on yourself.
Now breathe. Are you still
there? Good, I’m going to tell
you the truth. You need to hear
it.
Don’t stop doing what you have
underway with your blog andTwitter, or Facebook, or
whatever. That’s right. Don’t stop
doing it.
What’s happening with those
other folks, your ‘friends’ and
‘experts’ is that they are trying
to squeeze you into their ‘ideal
model’ of what a blogger ortweeter is. To them, they think
you should be the next Gary
Vaynerchuk, or Chris Brogan.
You’re not.
That’s not a bad thing. Actually, it
is a great thing. You are you. You
Share what you love
8/6/2019 Sun Day Social Networking
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/sun-day-social-networking 8/14
have your unique way to see the
world and relate to it.
Gosh dang, you went from zero
followers to hundreds. If that is
not success, then no amount of adding numbers or dollars will
help.
So what if you are not making a
living off of it. Is that what drove
you to start a blog or join
Facebook or Flickr? HELL NO!
Trust me right now. If you give
that up, at best you’ll always ask why you stopped sharing your
passion. At worst, you’ll stop
contributing anything meaningful
for quite some time and be
miserable.
Put your virtual foot down and
keep that shingle up. Push
through. Yep, a cliché, but do it!I’ll be here. Your friends that
share your passion will too.
If you’ve read this far, and have
stopped talking about your kids,
your accident, your addiction,
then I challenge you to put your
fingers to the keys today and go
to it. To heck with continuity. To
heck with a plan. Deep passion
lives to be fed and only through
expression can it be sated.
I hope this helps. Share your
good stuff and remember to
breathe. And while you’re here,
tell me about your passion, share
your blog, your Twitter ID and
whatever comes to mind.

Ego, it’s a large part of what
drives all of us to put ourselves
out there on any social network.
We love to have our ego
stroked. On social networks that
happens when we receive
comments on our work, when it
gets shared out, and when direct
praise comes back along the
wire.
Fans feed that ego and your
success. They’ll be the ones that
shout out about us even when
we have dry spells. Your number
one fan will share your content
everywhere, and draw in even
more followers for you. It’ll be
your fans that get your work up
in lights.
So why is it that we tend to
ignore them? Don’t believe me?
Trust me, it is highly likely that
your fans feel ignored. When was
the last time you mentioned one
of them in your work? Did you
give Sue credit for pushing you
through on your last book or
song? Was it Erin that drove youto write that post on writing a
great title?
Chances are those that give you
feedback shape your work all the
time. Isn’t it about time you give
them some credit?
What happens when you give
your peeps some recognition?
• They’ll be appreciativeand let the world know
about it.
• Better feedback, more
honest and more
frequent.
• They could become real
friends.
How can you shower your fans
with some attention and not be
like Elvis tossing out sweaty
scarves? I’ve got a few ideas.
• Blog about one of them.
Do an interview with
them.
• Share their links. Highlight
the thing they are most
proud of, or their work
that most inspired you.• Ask them to guest post
for you.
• Mention them in your
credits or just link out to
them on your blog roll.
Some of you are balking. You
have plenty of fans and you aren’t
doing anything for them exceptpumping out more content. It
won’t last. You’re going to rant
and rave and tick folks off. Then
they’ll be gone. They’ll leave
because you never showed that
you even noticed them. They’ll go
where they will be visible and
recognized.
• Right a ‘thank you’ post.
List your three biggest
fans by name. Link to
them.
• Find three of your
favorite followers and
brag about them. Nothing
mushy, but tell us why
you love them.
• Add a blog roll to your
blog. Don’t have one?
Create a tribute page
then. List your favorite
folks with links.• Write a comment now
and mention as many of
your fans as you know.
Tell us something about
them.

A lot of bloggers out there are
looking for more ways to drive
traffic. A goodly portion of them
are looking into social
networking and social media to
do that.
Most overlook the obvious
though, posting where the
audience is. This could mean that
you need to bring the topics,
writing, etc. into the realm where
your real audience is. This can
also mean going online to where
your readers are.
Utterli allows you to address
both of these factors. Through
observation of my own stream
of posts, and how much impact
they can have, I’ve been drawn to
this conclusion.
Utterli has turned out to do
surprisingly well on search
traffic. The stats aren’t specifically
revealed but based on the pass-
through for partial posts to my
primary blog; it turns up a fair
amount of hits.
Utterli provides support for
multimedia posts. Better yet,
Utterli makes it easy. This allows
you to share a photograph,
video, written word, or audio, or
all of the above. This works great
for sharing a post that contains a
recording which is transcribed in
the text portion. Utterli makes it
searchable as well.
Utterli has a receptive viewing
audience. Again, just from my
own observation, it’s not unusual
for a typical post of mine to get
well over 100 hits with some
around 800 or more hits.
Utterli has another benefit, you
can blog from anywhere. TheUtterli mobile page works great
for getting a blog post out to
your blog, with the added benefit
of instant cross-posting.
Yes, cross-posting. Utterli was
the original post once, post many
platform. Before ping.fm and the
others that came along, you
could cross-post with Utterli.
Utterli integrates with several of
the most popular social
networking and media services,
as well as, all types of blogging
platforms.
I’ve posted from my Blackberry.
I’ve posted to YouTube, Blogger,
Twitter, Wordpress, and more. An
added bonus, the tags carry
through with the posts..
So if you want to be able to
reach your audience where they
are, you don’t have to log into all
of those individual services or
post to them, you can post on
Utterli, once.
You can even share posts you’ve
placed to Utterli later, or
multiple times to each of the
associated platforms. Posts on
Utterli have permalinks and
allow for discussion.
Before Seesmic enabled
comments, you could leave fullmultimedia comments on
Utterli. Another bonus!
Comments here show up on the
pushed through posts to the
blogs as a comment counter.
So before you go looking to
spend lots of time on other
platforms trying to post in 20
places, consider using Utterli as a
distribution tool. I’ve found it
works great for older content
you want to give folks a fresh
look at.
Drop by http://utterli.com/ today

Hello and welcome to Twitter.
You’ve just been introduced to
potentially millions of newfriends. Your buddy introduced
you and so you started by
following him. It’s a fun feeling so
you want to branch out and
follow more folks. You found
this great post by Liz Strauss
with lots of great folks to add.
STOP.
That’s right. STOP.
Don’t add those folks yet. Your
experience won’t be quite what
you expect. These folks won’t
be quite as welcoming as your
friend was. What? Aren’t they
the best on Twitter?
Those folks are going to
welcome you, but those folks are
heavy Twitter users and are going
to expect a few things from you
too!
No, no chicken sacrifices or
anything, but just some common
courtesy things that your friend
wouldn’t need. Your friend
knows you, these folks want to
know you and be your friend..
Yes, they actually will get to
know you.
So what can you do? Here’s a
few simple tips before you tweet:
• Add an icon - believe
it or not this a big one
but is the easiest thing to
fix. And to make it easier,
if you don’t have a pic
you’d like to use,
download this face. Just
choose the smallest one.
• Fill in your one line
bio - put something here
about yourself. Mention
what you do for a living,
or something that definesyou. Father, mother,
consultant, etc. The key
here is not to be yet
another “I’ll make you
rich” listing. We’ll figure
that out quick enough if
it’s true. So seriously, put
something fun or
interesting here. Your bioshould be who you are,
not what you do.
• Fill in your website
- no, we don’t want it to
link back to your Twitter
page. If you don’t have a
website, just leave it
blank. If you don’t
represent your employer,
don’t put that page here
either. Got naked picture
site? Maybe don’t put that
link here either. You’ll find
out soon enough if we’re
interested in that. Don’t
put your MySpace page
here either. Honestly,
folks won’t appreciate it.
• Check that person’s
profile and tweets -
you’ll be glad you did. If
you were to check mine
for instance you’d seethat I’ve posted over
52,000 public Twitter
messages. That works
out to some months
where I’ve posted
thousands. I’m not the
Before you tweet
8/6/2019 Sun Day Social Networking
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/sun-day-social-networking 14/14
only one. You may find me
too busy to have in your
stream. Also, if you’re
going to follow someone,
their profile and tweet
history will tell you if
what they are posting or
will post might be
offensive to you. You’ll
also get a sense of who
they talk to. Those folks
might scare you as well.
• Get a Twitter client - You can find a list of
Twitter clients that
Twitter recommends.
These programs set on
your desktop and let you
watch your Twitter
stream go by without
having to visit
Twitter.com. They’ll also
allow you to post
messages from your
desktop. Trust me; you’ll
be glad you did this. My
favorite client right now
is Tweetdeck .
Okay, now you’re ready to join
the big dogs. Those things above
will already take you out of the
newbie mode before you even
join the mainstream of Twitter.
Cheers to your joining us on
Twitter! I look forward to seeing
your smiling face and checking
out your website and your
tweets.
