Sun Newspapers WEDNESDAY, November 30, 2011. 23 CLASSIFIEDS AND SPORT Cook stars as Eagles swoop By JACKSON CLARK WANDERERS appear to be back on track after an astounding 38-point win against Waratahs in the early game of the triple-header at TIO Stadium on Saturday. The Eagles gained the early ascendancy but a high-scoring third term saw Waratahs boot 10 goals and go into the final change with a handy 19-point advantage. It appeared the Eagles had let another game slip but thanks to some last-quarter heroics from Williamstown forward Adam Cook, the side notched the 22.7 (139) to 16.5 (101) win. Cook was unstoppable up forward, kicking six goals in the last term and nine for the match. He received great delivery from Brad Vassal and Chris Dunne, who found plenty of the ball. Waratahs were best served by big man Guy Campbell, who was a colossus up forward. The win sent a strong message to rivals as the Eagles are set to be bolstered by more inclusions. St Marys recorded their third win on the trot, defeating Southern Districts in the second game, 15.20 (110) to 13.10 (88). Saints got the jump on Crocs early and if not for some wayward kicking in front of goal the end result could have turned ugly. However, Southern Districts refused to quit and turned a 48-point deficit into a four-point lead early in the last term. It was the poise and experience from St Marys that allowed them to regain the lead and kick a couple of goals to seal the win. Karl Lohde and Justin Wilson were worked around the stoppages and through the middle while Darryl White (five goals) and Peter Macfarlane (four) were dangerous. Relton Roberts almost emerged as a match-winner for the Crocs with his five goals and Henry Labastida was serviceable against his old side. In other games, Tiwi Bombers continued their winning ways with a 22.11 (143) to 11.12 (78) win against Palmerston Magpies in Saturday’s late game, while a depleted Nightcliff demolished Darwin 35.19 (229) to 8.5 (53) at Nightcliff Oval on Sunday. They overcame elite international competition to finish runners-up 34-12 to champions South Sea Drifters. But in the first match Mozzies were squashed by Fiji’s Daveta in a 36-0 loss. There was little time to straighten out before their next match with Papua New Guinea, succumbing 22-17 to a winning try from PNG. But the local boys recovered nicely by the third match, swarming over Warwick Bombers for a 17-0 win. The mighty Mozzies overcame Island Breeze 12-7 in the quarter-final and Queensland Country 17-14 in the semi-final to qualify for a finals appearance. Mozzies appeared leg-weary in the final — they fielded a shortened roster of 11 players in the tournament, and Hall suffered a shoulder injury on day one. In his first stint as captain, Wise Sekitoga provided exceptional on-field leadership throughout every minute of each game, supported very capably by vice captain Robbie Butcher. Former Fijian representative Simeli Koniferedi scored a try for the NT in all but one match and was the team’s MVP.
